Alta E. Larter
Age 82, passed away on Oct. 16, 2001 in Tacoma, WA at Pioneer Place Alzheimer’s Center. She was born icon daughter of John W. Phillipi and Nellie E. Garrett Phillipi. She grew up in Chehalis, WA. She married icon Thaniel G. Larter on Nov. 23, 1939 and lived in Tacoma, WA. She was a member of South Hill Christian Church and Puyallup Elks Emblem Club. She retired from Sears Roebuck Co. where she worked in the office for many years. She is survived by nieces Carol Hahn, Christel Phipps, Linda Means, Norma Crist and Rosalie Arnold; nephews Allan Phillipi and Stanley Phillipi; sisters-in-law Ollie Hanson and Laura Phillipi; many great nieces and nephews, and cousins. Alta was predeceased by her husband, Thaniel, of 38 years. Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 22, 2001 from Noon until 9 PM at Mt. View Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001 at 2 PM in the Mt. View Garden Chapel. Age 85, of Olympia, died peacefully Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at his son's home. He was born icon February 23, 1916 in Spokane, WA to Philip and Helen Werle. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hazel; brothers Wendell and Jerry; sisters Yvonne, Norma, Virginia and Helen; son Jim, daughter Phyllis, son Red; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Kenneth Colburn
April 18, 1952 - October 13, 2001 After graduating from Puyallup High School and Pacific Lutheran University, Ken worked as an independent commercial real estate agent. His passions were his family, his community and the outdoors. He was an avid cyclist, moun- taineer, skier, fisherman, golfer, runner, pilot and scuba diver. Ken was an active member of his community, serving as School Board Member for the Fife School District since November 1999, and on the city Parks and Recreation Advisory Board since November 1994. Ken was a dedicated and devot- ed family man who loved working with children. He coached his girls’ soccer team, and instilled in them a love for athletics and a desire for excellence. Ken inspired a love for the outdoors in his daughters and often took them camping, cycling, hiking and water skiing. Ken set an example to the girls to always do their best, to follow their dreams, and to throw themselves into a new task and to stick with it. Ken pursued his dreams and instilled the same philosophy in his girls. He touched many people’s lives with his outgoing and gregarious nature; he had an amazing way of getting to know people, a way of showing his true heart. He was always open to new people and experiences. Ken is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Karen, and daughters Alicia and Jessica; his mother Eileen and father Rueben; grandmother Martha Colburn (101 years young); brother Darrell (Marcie); mother-in-law Louise Query and father-in-law Bud Query; brothers- in-law Ron Query (Karen), Marv Query (Chris); sisters-in-law Janis Sterud (Bill), Kathy Benight; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends who loved him. Anna E. “Jean” Mercier (Martindale)
Born Dec. 18, 1913 in Dogden, ND; passed away at her home Oct. 17, 2001. Predeceased by her hus- band Nicholas Mercier in 1990, and granddaughter Jean Martindale in 1977. She is survived by her broth- er Charles Walker; son Ronald Martindale, daughter Shirlee Benner (Dale), daughter Donna Lutsey (Noel); her pride and joy, her oldest grandson Gary Martindale, and 10 more grandchildren; many great- and great-great-grandchildren. At her request, no services will be held. Any remembrances may be made to the American Lung Assn. or the Cancer Foundation.

LEO ST. JEAN
Born October 25, 1927. Went home to be with the Lord, October 11, 2001. Member of Life Center Church. World War II Veteran--US Navy. Worked for Douglas Aircraft, Boeing and Tacoma Law Enforcement as a Systems Programmer Analyst. He will be missed by many friends who knew him and loved him. TO MY DEAR FRIEND I think that God will never send A gift so precious as a friend. A friend who always understands And fills each need as it demands. Whose loyalty will stand the test When skies are bright or overcast. Who sees the faults that merit blame But keeps on loving just the same. Cornelia Ann (Nikki) Anderson
Cornelia Ann Anderson - known to her friends as Nikki - passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on Tuesday, October 16, 2001, after a long struggle with cancer. Nikki was born icon in Woodbury, CT, and was 56 at her passing. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Peterson, of Port Orchard, and her many loving nieces and nephews in New England, Washington and Colorado. Nikki was a writer with a broad scope of subjects from cooking and organic gardening to the chronicling of her healing journey over the course of two years. She also wrote short fiction and poetry and was involved with several writers’ groups. Nikki also had a passion for making and collecting pottery and was an accomplished artist, especially in painting on silk. An avid organic gardener, her other pursuits included reading, music, and the practice of Tai Chi Chuan. But her biggest passion and largest contribution was her loving heart and strength of spirit which has touched so many peo- ple. She has inspired everyone she has touched with the example of her strength and unwavering faith. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. Memorial services will be held at the Unity Center of Tacoma, where Nikki was a member, on Saturday, October 20 at 1:00 p.m. Remembrances may be made to the Unity Center of Tacoma.

CHESTER “CHET” BROWN
June 17, 1917 - October 5, 2001 Chet Brown lived in Forks, WA for most of his youth until he graduated from high school. After moving from the Olympic Peninsula to Tacoma, he worked for Howard Ladder Company in Kent, WA until his retirement. Chet was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gladys. He is survived by four children: his sons Jim, Paul and Robert, and his daughter Irene. Chet was also a father figure to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed spending summers with them camping on the coast at Kalaloch or salmon fishing at Westport. He was a humble and unselfish man and put the needs of his family before his own. Thank you, Grandpa, for always being there when we needed you the most. He was deeply loved and will be in our hearts and greatly missed by all who knew him. Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 20, 2001 at 1:30 pm at Mountain View Funeral Home, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, Tacoma, WA 98499.

Paul C. Thomas
Paul C. Thomas, 89, passed away Oct. 15, 2001. Born Dec. 3, 1912 in Fort Ward, WA. Paul was a WWII veteran, Purple Heart recipient of 82nd Airborne. His wife, Beulah Thomas, of 27 years, preceded him. Paul is survived by three brothers and one sister, Lohman, Lloyd, Stanton Thomas, Joyce Dwynell; and three granddaughters, Chris McMaster, Debra Thomas, Ronda Bustamante. Graveside services will be held October 20, 2001, 2:30pm, Mountain View Memorial Park, Tacoma.

Robert Eugene Whitehead
Robert Eugene Whitehead, loving father, husband, grandfather, educator, mentor and gentleman, known to all as Bob, passed away from coronary complications on October 17, 2001 in Everett. Born November 19, 1933 in Stan- wood, Washington, Bob attended Everett public schools and graduated from Everett High School in 1951. As a youth, he was involved in Everett YMCA and HI-Y. After attending Everett Junior College, Bob earned three diplomas from the University of Washington, in- cluding bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Bob was honored to have served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. For forty years, Bob committed his career to public education as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent in school districts in Washington, California and Minnesota. The school districts included Mercer Island, South Whidbey, Everett and Franklin Pierce, San Francisco and Carmel, CA and Minnetonka, MN. He served over four decades as a mentor to countless public school students, teachers and administrators, most recently serving as Di- rector and mentor in the Danforth principal preparation program at the University of Washington. Bob is survived by wife Carol Whitehead of Everett; sons Jay Whitehead of Ohio, Dane Whitehead of Texas, Russ Golden of California; daughter Jodi Whitehead of Tacoma; grandchildren Alexandra, Tristan, Gage and Margaux; daughters-in-law Anne-Sophie Whitehead, Kenna Whitehead and Tracey Golden; sister-in-law Marjorie Bissell of Everett; nieces Dawn Lawrence and Gay Kirkpatrick of Everett; former wife Demaris Fulcher of Whidbey Island; and many friends who he considered part of his extended family. Services are to be held Saturday, October 20 at 12 Noon at Reg Scodeller Gymnasium at Cascade High School, 801 East Casino Rd., Everett. Christina R. “Tina” Gordon
She was a gift, our Tina. She was a teacher by choice, but first of all by heart. Her life and love and spirit extended beyond the classroom to all of us who had treasure of Tina in our lives. Along with loving her children, connecting with people and working in her garden, her passion was to shine Jesus’ love, and she was one of the brightest! We are so grateful for her presence in our lives, and we would not have missed it for the world... but how we will miss her. She passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at the family home in Mount Vernon, following a year long battle with cancer. Tina was born icon in St. Louis, Missouri, March 21, 1958, the daughter of Douglas and Bernadine Engel Remington. After a childhood spent in several parts of the world, she settled with her parents in Tacoma, Washington in 1970, where she graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1976. She then entered Pacific Lutheran University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and later graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham with a Master’s Degree in secondary administration. She was united in marriage to Martin W. Gordon in Tacoma, April 21, 1983. The coup- le then settled in Mount Vernon where she had resided since. After coming to the Skagit Valley, she taught school in Arlington and at Jefferson Elementary in Mount Vernon for the 6th grades. She enjoyed her gardening and reading, and especially her dog Nellie. She attended Valley Friends Church. Survivors are husband Martin “Marty” W. Gordon, daughter Meagan E. Gordon, son Jeremy S. Gordon, all of the family home in Mount Vernon; mother Bernadine Engel Remington of Tacoma; 5 sisters, Sherry Remington, Vicki Remington, Kitty Peterson, all of Tacoma, Missy Battey and Marjie Cooley, both of Puyallup; 1 broth- er, Douglas Remington of Tacoma; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Her father preceded her in death. Public graveside services will be held at Mount Vernon Cemetery, Saturday, October 20, 2001 at 11 AM, with a public memorial service to follow at 12 Noon at First Christian Reformed Church, 701 W. Blackburn St., Mount Vernon, WA. Mrs. Gordon will lie in state for viewing at Kern Funeral Chapel, Mount Vernon, from 9am to 8pm, Friday, October 19, 2001. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Kern Funeral Home. Donald D. Duncan, Sr. (Dunk)
Was called home to the Lord on Oct. 17, 2001 after a battle with cancer. He was born icon Sept. 4, 1940 in Hayward, WI. Survived by wife of 40 years, Edie; sons Dale (Connie), Donald Jr., Dan; father D. Dale; sisters Terri, Toni (Rick); 9 grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends; special friends, hunting buddy Ron Learned, bowling buddy Paul Blakey. Preceded in death by his mother Judy, brother Melvin, sister Judy. Don retired from Pierce Transit after 29 years in 1996. A member of Tacoma Christian Center, American Legion, VFW and NRA. Hobbies included hunting, bowling, camping. Special thank you to all the nurs- es that helped with his care. Viewing will be at New Tacoma Funeral Home from 4pm-8pm Friday, Oct. 19, 2001. Ward L. Gooding
Born December 20, 1910 in Gooding, Idaho; passed away Octo- ber 15, 2001 in Tacoma, WA. Mr. Gooding graduated from the U of W with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. He was employed by the State of Washington Dept. of Highways for over 30 years. He is survived by sons Nelson of Henderson, NV, Eric (Joan) of Palm Des- ert, CA; and grandchildren Lisa, Katherine, Kevin and Christopher (Shannon) of Seattle, WA. In addition, he is survived by stepchildren Pauline (Howard) Lucas, Terry (Guy) Massetti, Frank (Nola) Whitney, Karen (Bob) Scheller, and their children and grandchildren. Milton H. Boehm
Formerly of Neenah, WI, passed away on Oct. 18, 2001 in Tacoma. He’s survived by his son, Ralph, 3 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Ruby G. Potter
Ruby G. Potter, 89, a Lakebay resident for 20 years, died October 18, 2001. Ruby was a member of the Longbranch Community Church. Family members include two sons, Dale Potter of Tacoma and Allan Potter of Houston, TX; four grand-daughters and three great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd. Lt. Col. Joseph T. Dougherty USAF
January 27, 1958 - October 17, 2001 Preceded in death by his father, Patrick Edward Dougherty. Survived by his mother, Jean King Dougherty; sisters Jean Kibbe and her husband Jack, Peggy and Patty Dougherty; brothers Michael and Jim Dougherty, and Jim’s wife Mary; and nephews Sean, Patrick and Ryan Kibbe. Joe is a graduate of St. Bene- dict’s Grade School in Seattle, Seattle Prep High School and Washington State University. Joe had two residences in Washington - Olympia and Stuart Island in the San Juan Islands. Lt.Col. Dougherty proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force. During a distinguished 17-year career, he served as a transportation officer in numerous assignments around the world, including Panama; Okinawa, Japan; and The Philippines. His numerous military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Achievement Medal, and was named the Air Force Bases Outstanding Field Grade Transportation Officer of The Year for 2000. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, October 24, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. at the Chapel on McChord Air Force Base.
