Bernard L. Carlon, 60
BAY CITY - Bernard L. "Bing" Carlon, age 60, of Red Wing died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.
He was born Jan. 21, 1938, in Red Wing to Clifford "Jack" and Avis (Sloper) Carlon, and graduated from high school in Red Wing.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years and was in the Minnesota Army National Guard, Company B, First Battalion, 135th Infantry, in Red Wing for 24 years. He worked at S.B. Foot Tanning Co. for 35 years. He married Karen Steffenhagen May 24, 1963, in Red Wing. A member of United Lutheran Church, he was a longtime member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post 54, active with the DFL, and belonged to the AFL-CIO Council, Pheasants Forever and was past president of Local 335 UFCW. He enjoyed fishing and golfing.
He is survived by: his wife; four daughters, Kandise (Dave) Zethren of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Pam (Brian) Johnson, Michelle (John) Hovey and Polly Carlon, all of Red Wing; one son, Timothy of Oakland, Calif.; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Marilyn Clarke of Hastings, Minn., Trudy (Richard) Sutherland of Red Wing, Helen (Steve) Vogt of Bay City and Cathy O'Brien of Nebraska; nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Saturday, Jan. 16, at United Lutheran Church with the Rev. Andrew Smith officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Gary Schwab, Dave Dodge, Charlie Chandler, Robert Borgschatz, Samuel Parker and Gene Watson. Memorials of the donor's choice are preferred.

Bonnie J. Krings, 79
Bonnie J. Krings, 79, of Durand, formerly of Elmwood, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at her home in Durand.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Elmwood, with Rev. Varkey Velickakathu officiating. Spring burial will be in the church cemetery at Farm Hill, rural Elmwood. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Rhiel Funeral Home, Elmwood, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.
Arrangements were handled by Rhiel Funeral home, Elmwood.

Bonnie J. Krings, 79
ELMWOOD - Bonnie J. Krings, age 79, of Durand, formerly of Elmwood, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at her home in Durand.
She was born July 6, 1919, the daughter of Peter and Mabel (Richardson) Poquette. She was born and raised in Arkansaw. She graduated from the Arkansaw High School. After high school, she lived with her aunt in Chicago for a few years.
She married Gale Krings Nov. 28, 1940, at St. John's Catholic Church in Plum City. After marriage, they lived in the Town of Union, rural Plum City. In 1945, they moved to Arkansaw, where her husband hauled milk. They moved to Elmwood in 1955. In 1988, they moved to Durand, where she remained the rest of her life.
She is survived by: her husband, Gale; two sons, Tim (Joanie) of Aurora, Ill., and Ty (Sue) of Baldwin; one daughter, Tess (Jim) Lechner of Durand; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; one son, Terry; and one great-grandson, Matthew.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 22, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Elmwood. Rev. Varkey Velickakathu officiated. Spring burial will be in the church cemetery at Farm Hill, rural Elmwood.

Adam M. Gergen, 75
PRESCOTT - Adam Milton Gergen, age 75, of Prescott died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at the St. Croix Care Center, Prescott.
He was born May 27, 1923, in Douglas Township, Dakota County, Minn., the son of Nicholas and Margaret (Weiler) Gergen. He was a 1941 graduate of Hastings (Minn.) High School. He served in the Navy Air Corps during WWII. He married Elaine Tronnier Sept. 6, 1943. He lived in Madison and Menomonie while he worked for the Wisconsin State Crop Improvement Department as seed inspector, until moving to Prescott. He was then employed by M.G.K. as a lab tech for many years.
He enjoyed working in his yard and growing flowers.
He is survived by: his wife, Elaine of Prescott; four children, Nancy (Tom) Suckow of Menomonie, Tom (Sandy) Gergen and John (Kathy) Gergen, all of Prescott, and Sue (Dan) Murphy of Ellsworth; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Majeski of Woodbury, Minn., and Bernadine Polglase of Hastings; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; a son, Gary; an infant son; three brothers and four sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, Jan. 22, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Prescott. Rev. Thomas Mannion officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Elaine D. Iverson, 76
SPRING VALLEY - Elaine D. Iverson, age 76, of Spring Valley died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at the Spring Valley Health Care Center.
The former Elaine Brunn was born Dec. 28, 1922, in the Town of Union, Eau Claire County, to Herman and Loretta (Backus) Brunn. She moved with her family to the Town of Menomonie, Dunn County, in 1925 and graduated from Menomonie High School in 1941.
She married Harlan Iverson Sept. 16, 1950, in California. She worked for the Dunn County Health Department for 46 years, retiring in December, 1987. She was a member of the Ludington Guard Band for 25 years and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Menomonie.
She is survived by: her husband, Harlan of Spring Valley; one brother, Myrl (Jan) Brunn of Elk Mound; two sisters, Marion Brunn and Gail Krause, both of Menomonie; two nephews, Donald Krause of Colfax and James Krause of Menomonie; one great-nephew, Dalton Krause of Menomonie.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew, Michael Brunn.
Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 21, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with Rev. Daniel Schmidt officiating. Spring burial will be in the Gilman Lutheran Cemetery in the Town of Gilman.

Darrel G. Bottolfson, 49
Darrel G. Bottolfson, age 49, of River Falls died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
He was born in Minneapolis on July 18, 1949, the son of Melvin and Elva (Schardin) Bottolfson. He graduated from River Falls High School in 1967. He was in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971, serving in Vietnam for 13 months. He was employed by U.F.E. at the River Falls plant for 27 years.
He was confirmed at Ezekiel Lutheran Church. He was a member of the River Falls American Legion Post #121 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2115 of Hudson.
He is survived by: his mother, Elva (Bottolfson) Hillebrant of River Falls; three brothers, Glen and Lonny Bottolfson of River Falls and Wayne Bottolfson of Riceville, Ia.; two sisters, Joyce McKahan of Beldenville and Marilyn (LaVerne) Klingensmith of Ellsworth; 16 nieces and nephews and 17 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral was Thursday, Jan. 21, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Kebschull officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Kevin Pechacek, Jim McKahan, Jim Solum, Melvin Manthey, Dan Dusek and Tom Solum.
Cashman Mortuary handled arrangements.

Nora Christenson, 86
RIVER FALLS - Nora Christenson, age 86, of River Falls died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999.
She was born April 21, 1912, in Waukesha County to Ida and Nickalos Tollefson. In 1942, she married Einard Storm, who died in 1944. On March 10, 1962, she married Edwin Christenson of River Falls. He also preceded her in death.
She is survived by: her stepsons, James (Karen) Christenson of Ann Arbor, Mich., and the Rev. Ray (Kay) Christenson of Las Vegas; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Ida and Nickalos; her first husband, Einard; her second husband, Edwin; one sister, Louise; two half-sisters, Henrietta Anderson and Sabrina Wold; and one half-brother, Peter.
Funeral was Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church. Burial was in Our Savior's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Beldenville.
Cashman Mortuary handled arrangements.

John 'Jack' Wittig, 67
John "Jack" Wittig, age 67, of Las Vegas died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at home, with Hospice, following a long illness of emphysema.
He was born on Feb. 4, 1931, in Milwaukee, the son of Florian and Stella (Asher) Wittig, living his childhood years in the Ellsworth area.
In July of 1951, he entered military service, stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas for four years.
In 1952, he married Carol Weber at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood. They had five children.
A resident of Las Vegas for 46 years, he was a retired taxi cab driver. He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by: three sons, Mike (Becky), Tony (Loretta) and Bill; two daughters, Patti (Mike) Roberts and Kathy (George) Glasper, all of Las Vegas; two sisters, Marilyn Mayers of Las Vegas and Bonnie (Dick) Scott of San Mateo, Calif; one brother, Chuck Wittig of Hawaii; and 13 grandchildren.
Services were at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Friday, Jan. 15, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Dan Weber, Delbert Weber, Dee DiIorio, Walt Roberts, Dick Scott and Tom McGahey.

Mavis L. Phillips, 82
ELMWOOD - Mavis L. Phillips, age 82, of Elmwood, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999 at her home.
She was born Jan. 27, 1916 in Downsville to Otto and Anna (House) Burck. She was raised in the Downsville area and helped at home on the farm, and also worked out as a housekeeper for several people. She married Jesse Phillips Aug. 29, 1940 in Decorah, Iowa. Her sister, Loretta and husband Telmer Steinmeyer were their attendants. After marriage they lived in rural Menomonie and Mavis helped on the farm as well as being a homemaker. She has lived in Elmwood since 1975.
She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, baking and cooking for her family, and also spending time with her children and grandchildren. The last few years she has enjoyed visiting with friends on her front porch. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Survivors include: two daughters and three sons, Irene (Edwin) Johnson of Spring Valley, Raymond Phillips of Elmwood, Allen Phillips of Menomonie, Russell (Mandy) Phillips of Menomonie, Audrey (Larry) Stabenow of Wheeler; two sisters and one brother, Loretta Steinmeyer of Menomonie, Shirley (Thor) Edgeberg of Menomonie, Dewayne (Janice) Burck of Freeport, Ill.; nine grandchildren; Ranie Kannel of Colfax, Lisa VanDusartz of Woodbury, Minn., Edwin Johnson, Jr. of Madison, Renae Stewart of Elmwood, Russell Phillips, Jr. of Menomonie, Rhonda Phillips of Spring Valley, Rocky Phillips of Menomonie, Marisa Ehrnreiter of Menomonie, Dwayne Stabenow of Ridgeland; eight great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Jesse; a special grandson, Kyle James Stabenow; two sisters, Millie and Irma; and three brothers, Kenneth, Leland and Otto, Jr.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 22 at New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville with Rev. Richard Klabunde officiating. Burial was in Grand View Cemetery in the Town of Dunn, Dunn County.

Georgia V. Austin, 88
HAGER CITY - Georgia V. (Russell) Austin, age 88, of Deerwood, Minn., formerly of Hager City, died on Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at her daughter's home in Deerwood.
She was born on April 10, 1910, in St. Paul to Gail and Catherine (Heinen) Russell. She married Almond G. Austin on Jan. 5, 1928. Following their marriage, they lived in Hager City until moving to St. Paul in 1972 and then to Deerwood in 1993, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law.
She was a warm, creative, caring person devoted to her family. She enjoyed reading, woodcarving, needlework, painting and travel. She was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood.
She is survived by: four daughters and sons-in-law, Jean (Robert) Boxrud of Hettinger, N.D., Gerre (D.J.) Papenbrook of San Diego, Calif., Hazel (John) Nelson of Ellsworth, and Kay (Robert) Cooper of Deerwood; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia Dartt of Suisan, Calif., Vivian Wilson and Gail Jackson, both of St. Paul.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Almond; three sisters; one brother and one granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood with Rev. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be at the Trenton Cemetery in Hager City. Friends were to call on Tuesday at the Koop Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. and on Wednesday for one hour before the services at the church. If so desired, memorials are preferred to the Georgia V. Austin Memorial Fund.

Robert E. Stone, 63
ELMWOOD - Robert E. Stone, age 63, of Elmwood died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home, Elmwood.
He was born March 1, 1935, the son of Richard and Helen (O'Keefe) Stone. He was born and raised in St. Paul. He graduated in 1954 from the Mechanics Arts High School in St. Paul, where he enjoyed basketball and baseball.
He married Jane Perry July 10, 1963. He spent most of his early years in St. Paul working as a construction worker and bartender. They moved to Elmwood in 1968, when he worked at the Arsenal in St. Paul. He later worked for Sweeney Bros. Construction Company and, since 1986, he had been bartending here and there. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include: his wife, Jane; three daughters, Tammy (Dave) Schutz of Maplewood, Minn., Cindy Weber of Elmwood, Helen Stone of Elmwood; two sons, William (Charlene) of Elmwood and Francis (Roxann) of Woodville; four grandchildren, Shantell Doree, Neil and Shawn Weber and Brennan Stone; one sister, Theresa (Floyd) Novack of Cloquet, Minn.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard.
