John O. Aslakson, 83
BAY CITY - John O. Aslakson, 83, Red Wing, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at Red Wing Health Center.
He was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Minneola Township (Minn.) to Samuel and Ellen (Underdahl) Aslakson and attended school in Minneola Township. He married Nora Anderson in 1937, and she died in 1940. He married Billye Jean Bradford in 1942, and she died in 1957.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Oct. 18, 1941, to Sept. 10, 1945, and received the Bronze star and Purple heart. He worked for Pittsburgh Plate Glass from 1945 until retiring in 1977.
He married Pearl Jacques Feb. 8, 1958, in Red Wing. They owned and operated Hy-Way Inn from 1961-71. A member of United Lutheran Church, he also belonged to Leo C. Peterson American Post, was a life member of Disabled American Veterans and a past member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
He is survived by: his wife, Pearl; three sons, John of Red Wing, James (Janel) of Apple Valley, Minn., and Larry (Shelly) of Bay City; two daughters, Lottie Aslakson of Woodbury, Minn., and Joyce Becker of Hastings, Minn.; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one sister, Lydia Martenson of Red Wing; nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were: one daughter, Beverly Durdahl; one granddaughter; four brothers, Joseph, Leonard, Reuben and Selmar; and three sisters, Annie Anderson, Mathilda Enerson and Myrtle Duden.
Funeral was Saturday at United Lutheran Church with the Rev. Andrew Smith officiating. Burial with military honors was in Burnside Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Billye Jean, Chris and Stephen Aslakson, Bob Blackaderr, Kathy Dietzman, Steve Dodd and Rick Heber. Honorary pallbearers were Jayce and Travis Aslakson.
Visitation was Friday, Feb. 12, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and for one hour before the service Saturday at the church. There was a Legion prayer service Friday at the funeral home.

Viola V. Vogt, 83
Viola V. Vogt, age 83, of Red Wing died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Fairview Seminary Home.
The daughter of Fredrick and Sara (Perrott) Lidgerding, she was born July 10, 1915, in Hay Creek Township, Minn. A 1935 graduate of Red Wing High School, she received a teaching certificate from Winona (Minn.) State College in 1935, then taught at Featherstone Township (Minn.) School District No. 96 and Goodhue (Minn.) School District No. 105. For six years, she was a housekeeper for the A.P. Anderson family.
She married Robert Vogt June 28, 1941, in Red Wing; he died Nov. 4, 1987.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Altar Society and women's organizations. In addition, she established the church library in 1949 and continued to volunteer in the library until her death.
Surviving are: one daughter, Verna (James) Fair of Red Wing; two grandsons; and one sister, Olive Fink of Ellsworth.
Preceding her in death were her husband; one brother, Leslie Lidgerding; and one sister, Ivy.
Funeral was Friday, Feb. 19, at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Halvorson officiating. Burial was to be in Red Wing's Burnside Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or the church.

John P. Heckel, 84
PRESCOTT - John P. Heckel, age 84, of Prescott died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Regina Medical Center in Hastings, Minn.
He was born March 19, 1914, in Prescott, the son of Charles and Lois (Meacham) Heckel. He was a 1932 graduate of Prescott High School. He married Alice Carlson Feb. 19, 1944, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Prescott. He farmed in Clifton Township until 1969 and then moved into Prescott. He then worked for the Hudson Corporation in Hastings until his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Prescott.
He is survived by: his wife, Alice of Prescott; one daughter, Barbara Wyatt of Prescott; one grandson, Chris (Beth) Wyatt of Apple Valley, Minn.; and one great-granddaughter, Tricia Wyatt of Apple Valley.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Antoinette Kohlman and Caroline Heckel.
Services were Saturday at the Prescott United Church of Christ with Rev. David Roberts officiating. Interment was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Prescott.

Frances A. Shannon, 93
HASTINGS, Minn. - Frances Ann Shannon, age 93, of Hastings, Minn., died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Augustana Home.
She was born Feb. 12, 1906, in Dakota County, Minn., to Jacob and Mary (Schaeffer) Reinardy.
She was widowed from William J. Shannon.
She was a retired registered nurse.
Survivors include: three daughters, Mary Ardis Ames of Amery, Joyce (Joe) Kettner of Menomonie and Peggy (Rudy) Anderson of California; three sons, Thomas (Margaret) Shannon of Hastings, Paul Shannon of St. Paul Park, Minn., and John (Barbara) Shannon of Menomonie; two sisters, Rosemary (Ben) Sieben of Hastings and Lorette Andrist of Pine Island, Minn.; three brothers, Frank Reinardy of Hastings, Herb Reinardy of Hastings and Harold Reinardy of Nevada; also 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Rose Reinardy.
She is preceded in death by: her parents, Jacob and Mary Reinardy; husband, William J. Shannon; a son, William Shannon; two sisters, Lillian Denn and Leona Holzmer; and a brother, Irvin Reinardy.
Funeral services were Thursday, Feb. 18, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery-New Trier in Hampton, Minn. Pallbearers were her grandchildren.

Bill Don Brathall, 52
Bill Don Brathall, age 52, of Red Wing died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.
He was born July 24, 1946, in River Falls, the son of Donald and Nina (Clark) Hanvelt, and attended school in Ellsworth. He then worked and traveled with the Tip-Top Fair for 20 years and also found time to mow many people's yards.
He married Lyna Erickson on June 20, 1987, and the couple recently moved to Red Wing and he currently was working at the St. James Hotel. He enjoyed hunting. He was a member of the Ellsworth Funsters and the Hiawatha Valley Church in Red Wing.
He is survived by: his wife Lyna; three brothers, Charles (Sharon) Brathall of Wheeler, Glen (Diana) Brathall of Ellsworth and Steve Hanvelt of Ellsworth; three sisters, Donna Hanvelt of Ellsworth, Carla (Merk) Hanvelt of Ellsworth and Lynda (Brad) Harder of Farmington, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, on Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. and on Thursday at one hour prior at the church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. at Hiawatha Valley Baptist with Rev. Chuck Friemel officiating. Burial will be in the Wacouta Cemetery in Wacouta Township, Minn. Pallbearers will be: John Brathall, Mike Phernetton, Mark Broostin, Dick Hart and Roger Hines. Honorary pallbearer will be Gary Babler.

John C. Borst, 42
ELMWOOD - John Charles Borst, age 42, of Elmwood died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at his home in Rock Elm Township after a battle with cancer.
He was born May 6, 1956, the son of Donald and Shirley (Maier) Borst. He grew up near Ellsworth and attended the Ellsworth schools. He loved farming. He farmed west of Ellsworth for about three years and near Hammond for about five years. He moved to Idaho to farm and lived there three years before returning to Wisconsin. While in Idaho, he met Charlene Hurd. They have farmed together near Elmwood for the past 11 years.
His love for farming, animals and the outdoors is what made him happiest.
Survivors include: his beloved friend Charlene Hurd of Elmwood; four children, Jerime Borst of Elmwood, Eric Borst of Rice Lake, Stephanie Borst of Arkansaw and Lacy Borst of Elmwood; his parents, Donald and Shirley Borst of Ellsworth; four brothers and five sisters, Dick Borst of Chicago, Michael "Mick" Borst of Prescott, Gary Borst of Cottage Grove, Minn., Tom (Sue) Borst of Elmwood, Darla (Richard) Fischer of Ellsworth, Marilyn (Douglas) Hines of Ellsworth, Jeanette Borst of Bay City, Susan (Ray) Nelson of Ellsworth and Vicki Borst of Hager City; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Borst.
Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 22, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth. Father Thomas Donaldson officiated the service. Burial was in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Ellsworth. Bearers were: Rick Williams, Doug Hines, Bob Webb, Dick Fischer, Bill Crownhart and Ray Nelson.

John Harris, 73
John "Dean" Harris, age 73, Red Wing, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at his home.
He was born March 25, 1925, in Ellsworth to Frank and Anna (Stoetzel) Harris and graduated from high school in 1944. He attended UW-Stout for one year. He served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 7, 1943, to Nov. 12, 1944.
He married Carmen Allyn Oct. 26, 1946. They lived in Red Wing. He worked at Town Squire Clothing Store and then was a traveling sales representative for various companies for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Red Wing BPOE Lodge and a member of Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post. He enjoyed golfing and fishing.
Survivors include: his wife; one sister, Lorraine Hovde of St. Paul; 12 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters.
Funeral was Thursday, Feb. 18, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Marian Eisenmann officiating. Memorials are preferred to the church, American Diabetes Association or donor's choice. Burial was in Burnside Cemetery.

James O. 'Ollie' Tri, 72
James O. "Ollie" Tri, age 72, Hager City, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Pine Island, Minn., to John and Sorena (O'Neil) Tri. He attended schools in Red Wing, then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Margo Hanson March 4, 1949. They lived in Red Wing until moving to Diamond Bluff, where they lived for 45 years. Owner and operator of Tri's Masonry, he enjoyed fishing and camping.
Survivors include: his wife; three sons, Michael (Theresa) and Kelly, both of Diamond Bluff, and Bryan (Ruth) Tri of Hager City; three daughters, Candy Huppert of Red Wing, Mary (Jack) O'Neil of Ellsworth and Shelly Tri of Maiden Rock; 22 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gwen Rigelman of Red Wing and Lillian "Babe" (Paul) Savage of California.
He was preceded in death by: two sons, Daniel James and Patrick Ray; and three brothers, Kenneth, Wilbur "Bud" and Wilfred "Billy Jack."
Funeral was Thursday, Feb. 18, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Thomas Donaldson officiating. Spring burial will be in Diamond Bluff Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Loren Bach, Robert Converse, Delbert and Kelly Johnson, Arnold Sarnstrom and Clair Whipple.

Marion T. Stern Dinger, 82
Marion T. Stern Dinger, age 82, of Ellsworth died on Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center. She had been a resident of the care center since September 1989.
She was born Nov. 24, 1916, in Oak Grove Township at Prescott, the daughter of Louis and Thekla (Lubinski) Stern. She moved with her parents to Ellsworth in 1922. She married T. Gerald Dinger on Oct. 11, 1944, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church at Clayfield.
They farmed in the Ellsworth area for a brief time after their marriage. They lived in Eau Claire from 1946 until 1951, when they moved to St. Paul. In 1978, they moved back to Ellsworth to enjoy their retirement years.
She is survived by: a sister, Dorothy Stern Yanisch (Herbert) and her brother-in-law, Herbert Yanisch of Prescott; one sister-in-law, Bernice Stern of Ellsworth; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Gerald Dinger in 1996. Also preceded by her parents, Louis and Thekla Stern, and a brother, Walter Stern.
Services were Tuesday, Feb. 16, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth. Father Thomas Donaldson officiated. Interment was In Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery.

Frances V. Ecklund, 94
Frances V. Ecklund, 94, Ellsworth, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center.
She was born Sept. 2, 1904, in St. Paul to Karl and Hilda (Anderson) Anderson, and attended school in Trenton Township. She was a graduate of Bethel Junior College.
She married Arthur G. Ecklund Oct. 19, 1926, in St. Paul. They farmed east of Ellsworth for 13 years until their barn burned down. They continued to live there until moving to a mobile home southwest of Ellsworth in 1969. They spent winters in Arizona for 19 years. She enjoyed knitting and writing, contributing to the Ellsworth News for many years. She was a lifelong member of Zion Covenant Church, Ellsworth, and C.W.A. She worked in ad promotions for the American Cancer Association in the Pierce County area.
She is survived by: two daughters, Dorothea Larson of St. Paul and Margaret Naccy of Motley, Minn.; two sons, Norwood (Norma) Ecklund of Turtle Lake and Eugene (Phyllis) Ecklund of Bloomington, Minn.; one sister, Evelyn Anderson Kudlacek, Seward, Neb.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: her husband in 1988, five brothers and sisters.
Services were Monday, March 1, at Zion Covenant Church with the Rev. David Eaton officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
