John R. Cannon, 83
John R. Cannon, age 83, of Ada, Minn., formerly of Campbell, Minn., died Monday, June 21, 1999, at Fargo, N.D.
He was born June 21, 1916, in Ellsworth to Clair and Annabell Mae (Barnett) Cannon. He grew up and attended high school in Ellsworth, graduating in 1934. He attended UW-River Falls and Marquette University, Milwaukee. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 28, 1942. He served with the 82nd Airborne Unit as a Medic. He was in the Sicilian Invasion, Normandy Invasion and received a Purple Heart. He was discharged Sept. 19, 1945.
On Oct. 11, 1945, he married Joyce Rolson in Ellsworth. They made their home in Meadowlands, Minn., where he began teaching. They also lived in Plum City. In 1953, they moved to Campbell, Minn., where he taught Social Studies. He also was involved in coaching at Campbell. He served as Athletic Director for 20 years. He refereed high school football for many years also. He retired from teaching in the fall of 1973. During his teaching career, he was a substitute mail clerk and, following his retirement from the school, served as postmaster in Campbell for 10 years. He retired in 1983.
He was active in St. Gall's Church and Campbell/Tintah Community affairs. He served as Campbell Mayor, was a volunteer fireman and charter member of Campbell Lions Club. He was a member of the American Legion and former member of Wahpeton Elks. In May 1997, they moved to Ada. They are currently members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ada.
Survivors include: his wife, Joyce of Ada; five children and 13 grandchildren, Susan (Jerry) Pederson of Hawley, Minn., and their children, Timothy, Melissa, Robert and Kristi, Bobbie Krenz of West Fargo, N.D. and daughter Amanda, Kathleen (Ollen) Church of Ada and children Heidi, Tyler and Kinsey, Mary Jo (Robin) Slavik of Fargo, N.D., and children Nicole and Jessica, Michael (Amber) Cannon of Hutchinson, Minn., and children Kiley, Kaitlin and Collin John; his sister, Muriel Johnson of Sacramento, Calif.; his sister-in-law, Evelyn Cannon of Ellsworth; sister-in-law and her husband, Audrey and Gerald Hope of Oceanside, Calif.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; his brother, Edward; his sister, Sally; his two sons-in-law, Marc Schuler and Joel Krenz; his grandson, Lucas Church.
Funeral was Friday, June 25, at St. Gall's Catholic Church, Tintah, Minn. Father Andrew Marthaler and Father David Baumgartner officiated. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Campbell.
Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home of Breckenridge, Minn., handled arrangements.

Allen 'Chris' C. Christopherson, 81
Allen "Chris" Clayton Christopherson, age 81, of Red Wing died Friday, June 25, 1999, at Fairview Seminary Home.
He was born July 2, 1917, in Beldenville, the son of Otto and Inga (Jensen) Christopherson.
He attended country school in El Paso and graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School. He was baptized and confirmed in South Rush River Lutheran Church in Beldenville. On May 31, 1947, he married Janet Schafer at St. John's Lutheran Church in Goodhue, Minn. He worked at Hi-Park Dairy in Red Wing for two years, then farmed near Kenyon, Minn., for two years. Following that, he returned to the Hi-Park Dairy, where he worked for another eight years. After employment at Hi-Park, he worked for the Midland Co-op in Red Wing where, after 25 years, he retired in 1982.
He was a member of United Lutheran Church, serving on the church council, and he was a volunteer for Friends of Seniors. He enjoyed flowers, gardening and nature, throwing horseshoe and hiking, and he was a loyal Red Wing Aces fan.
He is survived by: his wife, Janet; one son, Dave of Red Wing; four daughters, Bonnie (Chuck) Eckert of Kalispell, Mont., Lauriel (Dale) Nelson of St. Cloud, Minn., Nancy "Inga" Christopherson of Minneapolis and Karen (Brian) Johanson of Rochester, Minn.; seven grandchildren; one brother, Vernon, of Mendota Heights, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by: his parents; one son, Gerald, in 1982; two brothers, Canton and Randolph; and two sisters, Olga Palmquist and infant sister, Bertha.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 29, at United Lutheran Church with Rev. Andrew Smith officiating. Burial was in the Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing. Pallbearers were: Briana and Ross Nelson, Shane Christopherson, Brett and Leigh Eckert, and Kaitlyn and Tony Johanson.
Memorials preferred to the church or the American Heart Association.
Mahn Family Funeral Homes, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, handled arrangements.

Calvin L. Plunkett, 51
Calvin Lee "Red" Plunkett, age 51, of Big River died suddenly Thursday, June 24, 1999, on his farm.
He was born July 6, 1947, in Superior, the son of Richard and Jeanette (Peterson) Plunkett. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Maple. He settled in River Falls, where he attended the University of Wisconsin and later purchased a dairy farm. He has served 10 years on the Board of Directors for the Ellsworth Co-op Creamery.
On March 1, 1980, he married his wife Gloria (Paulsen) and went on to raise eight children. In addition to farming, he enjoyed bowling, diesel mechanics and the company of many beloved friends and neighbors. A member of United Methodist Church in River Falls, he was of strong body and spirit.
He is survived by: his wife, Gloria; parents, Richard and Jeanette; eight children, Jennifer, Joshua, Tami (James) Klimpke, Tera (Glenn) Wachtler, James Engstrom, Daniel Engstrom, Mark Engstrom, Jeff Engstrom; brothers, Brian and Keith (Jackie); sisters, Barb (Tom) Kolodziej, Janice (Rick) Oaksford, Mary (Ralph) Frostman; grandchildren, Matthew, Rachel, Sydney, Benjiman, Jack, Chelsea.
Funeral services were Monday, June 28, at United Methodist in River Falls. Burial was in The Greenwood Cemetery in River Falls.
Cashman Mortuary of River Falls handled arrangements.

Joseph A. Wittig, 76
PLUM CITY - Joseph A. Wittig, age 76, of rural Plum City died Monday, June 21, 1999, at home in rural Plum City.
He was born April 30, 1923, the son of Ignatz and Julia (Kainz) Wittig, and raised in the Town of Lima, Pepin County, rural Durand. He married Helen Brion Nov. 15, 1944, in Durand. After marriage, they farmed on the home farm in Lima for five years. They then moved to rural Plum City, where they farmed and he was a DeKalb Seed salesman for over 30 years. He retired in 1993. He was a charter member of the Pepin County Farm Management Club. He was a pioneer in soil and water conservation, and received county and state awards for his efforts. He loved his family, playing cards, fishing and farming and will be missed by all.
Survivors include: his wife, Helen; seven daughters, Janet (Duane) Ardolf of Maple Grove, Minn., Karen (Steve) Traynor of Apple Valley, Minn., Diane (Mark) Collett of Waukesha, Jean (Arnie) Maxwell of Afton, Minn., Gloria (Bill) Link of Elmwood, Rosemary (Rick) Jones of Woodbury, Minn., Doris (Kevin) Weinzirl of River Falls; three sons, Steven (Vicki), David (Debbie) and Jerome, all of Maiden Rock; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandson; six sisters, Helen Stilson of Oregon, Theresa Wittig of Augusta, Edna Fischer of Bayport, Minn., Gertrude Holmstad of Plum City, Sr. Mary Avila Wittig of La Crosse and Marie Hayden of Rock Falls; four brothers, James and Louis, both of Durand, Alfred and Tony, both of Eau Claire.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; one son, Roger; one grandson, Anthony Collett; one sister, Anna Wilson; and one brother, Edward.
Funeral services were Friday, June 25, at St. John's Catholic Church, Plum City. Rev. Ambrose Blenker officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Rhiel Funeral Home, Durand.

Francis F. 'Swede' Fassett, 72
Francis F. "Swede" Fassett, age 72, of Joseph, Utah, died Friday, June 4, 1999, in Ritchfield, Utah.

Ruth M. Nelson, 76
SPRING VALLEY - Ruth Marie Nelson, age 76, of Spring Valley, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at The Lutheran Home in River Falls.
She was born May 13, 1923, the daughter of Emil and Ingaborg (Hermanson) Pederson in Cady Township, St. Croix County. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Woodville, and has been a member of New Centerville United Methodist Church since 1950.
She attended school in Woodville and graduated from Woodville High School with the Class of 1942. After school, she attended River Falls State Teachers College for two years. During high school and college, she and her sister Mary sang with the KSTP Sunset Valley Barn Dance traveling radio show.
On Oct. 14, 1950, she married Velmo Nelson at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville. She taught school at several rural schools and in Glenwood City Elementary School. After marriage, she became a homemaker and farm wife, raising her three children, Roland, Duane and Valerie.
She loved music and her family, and enjoyed gardening and animals and song birds. She served on the Martell Township Election Board for many years.
Survivors include: her husband, Velmo of Spring Valley; her children, Rollie (Debbie) Nelson of Hammond, Valerie of River Falls and Duane of Spring Valley. She is also survived by: four grandchildren, Angela, Marie, Johnathan and Michael; one sister, Mary Leon of Wilson; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Leon of Wilson, Kari (Cyrus) Leon-Irani of St. Paul and David Leon of Wilson; other relatives and many friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents and an infant brother, Ronald Eugene Pederson.
Funeral services were Wednesday, June 23, at New Centerville United Methodist Church, rural Baldwin. Rev. Gary Swanson officiated the service, with music provided by organist Lenore Mercer and vocalists Elizabeth Leon and Kari Leon-Irani. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, New Centerville. Cyrus Irani was honorary bearer. Bearers were: Roland Nelson, Duane Nelson, David Leon, Robert Deiss, Terry Falde and Steve Nelson.

Ethel L. Anderson, 77
HAGER CITY - Ethel L. Anderson, age 77, of Lake City, Minn., died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Lake City Nursing Home.
She was born May 30, 1922, in Wabasha County (Minn.) to Edwin and Elsie (Palmer) Bade, and grew up in the Lake City and Welch, Minn., areas. She married Donald Anderson Aug. 20, 1939, in Lake City. They lived in Lake City. He died Aug. 11, 1997.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Lake City and its Ladies Aid.
She is survived by: two sons, Dennis (Sylvia) of Burnsville, Minn., and David (Pamela) of Memphis, Tenn.; one daughter, Diane (Fred) Lutz of Mankato, Minn.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Reick of Hager City and Mildred Brunkhorst of Lake City.
Preceding her in death were her husband, two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral was Friday, June 25, at First Lutheran Church, Lake City, with the Rev. Roger Buhr officiating. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery, Lake City. Pallbearers were: Chris, Mark, Jeff and Scott Anderson, Mike and Mitch Lutz.
Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel, in Lake City handled arrangements.

Malvanie F. Stein, 87
MAIDEN ROCK - Malvanie Florence Stein, age 87, of Pepin died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Pepin Manor.
She was born Oct. 27, 1911, in Stockholm Township, Pepin County, to Lewey and Ida (Smith) Rundquist, and attended West Bluff School. A graduate of Maiden Rock High School, she later attended nursing school in Minneapolis and then returned to the area to do home nursing. She married Victor Stein May 18, 1935, at her sister's home. They farmed in Pepin Township until 1961, when they moved into Pepin. He died April 3, 1982.
She was a former member of Sabylund Lutheran Church and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was active in ELCW and Bible study. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining.
Survivors include: one son, Douglas (Beverly) of Pepin; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; one brother, Morton (Ovedia) Rundquist of Pepin; and one sister, Dolores (Glenn) Halling of Pepin.
She was preceded in death by: her husband; one grandson; two brothers, Elvin and Waldemar Rundquist; and four sisters, Esther Erickson, Agnes Johnson, Evelyn Larson and Maria Rundquist, who died as a baby.
Funeral was Wednesday, June 30, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pepin, with the Rev. Maynard Larson officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin. Pallbearers were: Harry Klein, Richard and Shaughn Laehn, and Brian, David and James Rundquist.
Arrangements were by Goodrich Funeral Home of Durand.

Gertrude Boxrud, 71
BAY CITY - Gertrude B. Boxrud, age 71, Pine Springs, Minn., died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at her home.
She was born on May 8, 1928, in Sauk Rapids, Minn., to Ferdinand and Otillia Yaeger. She graduated from Sauk Rapids High School in 1946 and worked as a cook in the St. Paul area most of her life. She married John Boxrud on Dec. 31, 1946. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include: four daughters, Amy (Larry) Mroszak, Lake Elmo, Minn., Christine (Mike) Larson, Bay City, JoAnn (Robert) Hoertsch, Shoreview, Minn., and Susan (Rory Rogowski) Boxrud, Lake Elmo; one son, John, Pine Springs; one sister, Edith (Jack) Anderson, Miltona, Minn.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1977, and by two sisters.
Visitation was Monday at Sandberg Funeral Home, North St. Paul, Minn. Memorial service was to be Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Stillwater, Minn.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Susan M. Ahlborn, 34
SPRING VALLEY - Susan Marie Ahlborn, age 34, of Spring Valley died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at the Baldwin hospital, Baldwin. She had been taken to the hospital by ambulance that day.
She was born April 28, 1965, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Gerald and Nancy (Egeland) Polski. She grew up in Roseville, Minn., and attended Alexander Ramsey High School, graduating in 1983. She went on to attend college at St. Catherine's in St. Paul, receiving a degree in Occupational Medicine.
On March 2, 1991, she married Paul Ahlborn at Minocqua. They had two children, Caitlyn and Casey. They moved to Prescott in 1992 and, in 1997, moved to Olivet, south of Spring Valley.
She was an occupational therapist. She also became involved in administrative health care and helped implement a number of programs for companies such as Marine Health Care of Milwaukee, Prism of Boston and Reability of Tennessee. She was involved locally with a number of health care centers and medical clinics.
Her bubbly personality made it easy for her to make friends. However, her failing health was making things difficult for her. She worked many long hours and spent most of her free time with her daughters.
Survivors include: her husband, Paul of Spring Valley; her daughters, Caitlyn and Casey; her parents, Gerald and Nancy Polski of Shoreview, Minn.; two brothers, Michael Polski of West St. Paul, Minn., and Steven Polski and his wife Stephanie of Cottage Grove, Minn.; her grandmother, Ferne Riach of Sun City, Ariz.; aunt and uncle, Jean and Dave Egeland of Plymouth, Minn.; father and mother-in-law, Reuben and Teresa Ahlborn of Minocqua; brother-in-law, Patrick Ahlborn and his wife Peggy of Parkersburg, W. Va.; sister-in-law, Ann Ahlborn and friend Lou Garcia of Chicago; nieces, Sydney Polski and Courtney and Morgan Ahlborn; cousins, Ryan Egeland and Brent Egeland; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley. A memorial service was held following visitation. Rev. Keith Holste officiated the service. Cremation was at Eau Claire Memorial Crematory, Eau Claire.

Josephine E. Brimmer, 80
ELMWOOD - Josephine E. Brimmer, age 80, of Elmwood died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood.
She was born Dec. 6, 1918, in Elmwood, the daughter of Eli and Lavina (Starkey) Edmonds. She grew up in the Elmwood community and graduated from Elmwood High School. She married William Dwight Poquette in 1936 and resided in Elmwood. He died on Sept. 27, 1959.
She later married George Brimmer of Plum City on May 25, 1963. They lived in the Exile community of rural Plum City. He died in 1990. In 1991, she moved back to Elmwood, where she has remained the rest of her life.
She is survived by: two sons, William J. (Dee) Poquette of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Ellis E. (Judy) Poquette of Elmwood; two daughters, Suzanne (Bob) Radtke and Melanie Girard, both of Elmwood; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her parents, both husbands and two sons, Jeffrey and Edward, preceded her in death.
Private funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Elmwood with Rev. Varkey Velickakathu officiating. Public graveside services will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Plum City.
Rhiel's Funeral Service is serving the family.
