Alice Sundberg McCuskey
Alice Sundberg McCuskey, 92, died in Viewcrest Health Center in Duluth on Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999. Born in Cambridge, Minn., she was a member and officer of the former Holyoke (Minn.) Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Golden West Enders and West End Senior Center of Duluth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, in 1971; her sons, Wayne, Lauren, and Gerald, who died in 1950, 1958, and 1997, respectively; two sisters, Lillian and Frances and her brother, Wallace. Survivors are a sister, Evelyn (Dan) Gaffke of Superior; five grandsons, Michael (Sheri) McCuskey of Duluth, Patrick (Sandy) McCuskey of Poquoson, Va., James (Robin) McCuskey of Lakewood, Calif., David (Beth) McCuskey of Duluth, and Jay (Laurie) McCuskey of San Pedro, Calif.; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Saturday from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral in the Fred Olson Mortuary Chapel, Duluth. Spring interment will be in the Holyoke Cemetery.

Agnes H. Lynch
Agnes H. Lynch, 86, of Superior, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness. She was born in Scobey, Mont., and had been a former longtime Billings Park resident. She was employed by the Billings Park Bakery, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the former St. Patrick's Catholic Church and its choir, the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Fraternal Aid Society and the Superior Eagles Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, John G. in 1990; three brothers, Daniel, John and Harry Teske; and two sisters, Helen Teske and Mary Alice Lutchen. She is survived by a son, Edward (Patser) Lynch of Superior; a daughter, Patricia A. Lynch of Kansas City, Mo.; a stepson, John Lynch of California; a stepdaughter, Laura Hoffman of California; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Edward Teske of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Cecilia Grymala of the Pattison Park area; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Saturday in Cathedral of Christ the King. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Lynch, Mike Lynch, Ray Boggess, Robbie Lee, Dan Mortensen and Daniel Grymala. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert E. Lee and John McKenzie. Florence V. Aunet
Florence V. Aunet, 86, of 6014 Cumming Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born July 20, 1912, in Superior, and was a lifelong city resident. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. Surviving are six sons, Ronald Aunet, Waukegan, Ill., Gerald (Cathy) Aunet, Wilmington, Del., Daniel (Barbara) Aunet, Douglas (Linda) Aunet and Richard (Barbara) Aunet, all of Superior, and Bruce Aunet, Madison; one daughter, Janice (Gregory) Hogan, Milwaukee; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Shippar, Superior; and a brother, Eugene (Mardell) Hoff, Superior. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in 1990. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Peterson of Bethel Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hawthorne.

Rory D. “Toby” Horn
Rory D. “Toby” Horn, 41, of 1310 N. 5th St., died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at his residence of complications due to recurrent hepatitis. Born Nov. 9, 1957, in Superior, he was a lifelong city resident. He attended Cooper Elementary School and graduated from Superior Senior High School in 1976. Horn was employed as a section laborer by the Burlington Northern Railroad, starting in 1978. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees. Surviving are his mother, Beverly J. “Betty” Horn, Superior; five brothers, Rick (Desi) Horn and Ron Horn, both of Superior, Reed Horn of Hugo, Minn., Randie Horn, Richfield, Minn., and Regan (Dori) Horn, Bloomington, Minn.; one sister, Rhonda Horn, Hermantown; and a nephew, Aaron, Hermantown. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas, in 1992, paternal grandparents, Kurt and Fae Horn, and maternal grandparents, William and Leona Bennett. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Leonard Carlson of Bayside Baptist Church officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation in the funeral home will be Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Pallbearers will be Charles Day Sr., Charles Day Jr., Tom Peterson, Tim Ohman, Mike Stein and Ed Rolson.

John A. Fairchild
John A. Fairchild, 78, of Grand Avenue, Duluth, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born on Dec. 26, 1920, in Duluth, to Edwin and Mina Fairchild. He was a 1940 Cathedral High School graduate and went on to attend Duluth Junior College for two years. On June 6, 1942, he married Eileen Gatlin in Duluth. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II, and also served in the Army Signal Corps. From March of 1963 to January of 1968, Fairchild served in the Duluth Air National Guard. He was employed as an electrician with USX for approximately 30 years, and as an electrical repairman with Diamond Match of Cloquet for an additional 10 years. He coached with the Duluth Amateur Boxing Association for over 40 years. He was a life member of VFW Post No. 6320, American Legion Post No. 71, and the Nemadji Men’s Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eileen; two sons, Patrick (Christine) Fairchild of Duluth and Jocko (Kerri) Fairchild of Superior; three daughters, Susan (Dr. Frank) Munns of Duluth, Kate (Ron) Hamilton of Apple Valley, Minn., and Jyl (Dean) Verlennick of Duluth; a sister, Dorothy Welch of Gainesville, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at Bell Brothers Chapel in Duluth and from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Tuesday at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, 610 99th Ave. W., Duluth. Military honors will be accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in the Bruno Cemetery in the spring.

August “Gus” Seacotte
August “Gus” Seacotte, 77, of Superior, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on Dec. 7, 1921, in Superior, to August and Erma (Krall) Seacotte. He was a lifelong resident of Superior, a member of Cathedral of Christ the King and the VFW Henry S. Blomberg Post No. 847. He had served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had worked for the Superior School District as a painter and had been a self-employed painter for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, on May 30, 1995; his parents; brothers Norman and Newtie; and a granddaughter, Sheryl Marie Cummings. He is survived by a step-son, Walter “Jim” (Theresa) LaFlamme of Superior; a step-daughter, Shirley LaFlamme of Superior; a brother, Robert Seacotte of Superior; a special friend, Zoa Campshure of Superior; grandchildren Mary Pearson, Sheryl Anderson, Robert Missinne, James LaFlamme, Michele Ford, Annette Blais and Lisa LaFlamme; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Monday from 5-8 p.m. with 7:30 p.m. wake prayers at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.at Cathedral of Christ the King with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant. Interment icon will be in the Lake Nebagamon Cemetery at a later date. Military honors will be accorded by the VFW Henry S. Blomberg Post No. 847 Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Jim Ross, Raymond Peters, Merrill Hoven, Everett Geitner, Jack Gallagher and Robert Micken.

Kathryn Mae (Hillman) Welter
Kathryn Mae (Hillman) Welter, 76, of Shell Lake, died Jan. 11, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Hospital Hospice Care Unit in Marshfield. She was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Rice Lake, to John L. and Ina M. (Bowers) Hillman. She graduated from Spooner High School in 1938 and Superior State Teachers College in 1942, earning her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Following graduation she taught kindergarten in Fond du Lac, Wis. On June 18, 1946, she married Donald J. Welter in Spooner. They lived in Milwaukee until 1953, then in Shell Lake from 1953 to 1972 where Dr. Welter practiced medicine and surgery. They lived in Augusta, Ga., from 1972-76, and in Elm Grove, Wis., from 1976 to 1980. Following her husband’s death in 1980, she returned to Shell Lake in 1981. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Shell Lake. She enjoyed researching her family’s history and playing bridge with her friends. She is survived by her six children, Nancy Welter, Eau Claire, Mary Pat (John) Rogers, Birmingham, Ala., John W. (Kathy) Ryder-Welter, Eau Claire, Joseph D. (Elizabeth) Welter, Marshfield, Elizabeth (Kevin) Kelly, Chippewa Falls and Frederick (Tremayne) Welter, Rayne, La.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents. Visitation is set for 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Pockat Funeral Home, Shell Lake, with the funeral scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday at Salem Lutheran Church, Shell Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church or a scholarship fund at Shell Lake High School for students entering the health care profession.

John B. Jodell
John B. Jodell, 67, a Green Bay resident, formerly of Superior, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at his home. He was born Oct. 2, 1931, to the late Noble and Florence (Hoen) Jodell. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a resident of Superior until 1989 and was employed by Archer Daniel Midland. He attended Superior Technical Institute and received a degree as an arc welder. He was then employed by the University of Wisconsin-Superior at Wessman Arena as a maintenance 2 until his retirement in 1988. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Jodell; three sons, John (Nina) Jodell, Midway, Ga., Gary (Ellie) Jodell, St. Paul, and David Jodell, Minneapolis; two daughters, Barbara Erickson, Duluth, and Susan (Bill) Parenteau, Ashwaubenon, Wis.; 20 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; his brother, Charles (Tammy) Jodell, Superior; five sisters, Josephine Miller, Superior, Barbara Kujava, South Range, Phyllis (Meredith) Rock, White Pine, Mich., Mary Jo Jodell, Superior, and Judy Keup, Superior. He was preceded in death by sisters Nancy Paddock and Annaemae Willcox, father and mother-in-law, Fred and Lulu Christenson. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Superior Moose Lodge, 66 E. 5th St. Lunch follows there.

Maurice L. Olson
Maurice L. Olson, 58, of 1316 Baxter Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior. He was born July 26, 1940, in Iron Mountain, Mich., and resided in Superior for most of his life. He attended Oakland Town School and the former Superior East High School. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and had been employed by Georgia Pacific for 27 years as a kiln operator, retiring in 1993. Surviving are his wife, Karen; his mother, “Vi” Hetebrugge, Superior; two brothers, Ed (Denise) Olson, Superior, and Harold (Myrtle) Olson, Saukville, Wis.; and several nieces, nephews and aunts. His father Edward Olson and stepfather Charles Hetebrugge preceded him in death. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Downs Funeral Home with Lt. Robert Parker of The Salvation Army officiating. Visitation in the funeral home begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Bob Robbins, Robbie Robbins, Maurice and Jim Beckwell, Roy Willette and Dennis Russell. Honorary pallbearer will be Norman Hudson.

Thomas M. Thompson
Thomas M. Thompson, 72, 2202 Banks Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in his residence. He was born May 8, 1926, in Superior, and was lifelong city resident. He served in World War II and Korea in the Naval Air Force. Thompson retired in 1986 as an engineer with the Burlington Northern Railroad after 44 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 418, a life member of the United Transportation Union No. 832, a life member of the Good Sam Club, and was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Thomas (Sharon) Thompson, Farmington Hills, Mich., and James Thompson, Superior; a daughter, Kathy (Craig) Franklin, Nashville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Jack and Erin Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ida (Hendricks) Thompson. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Hanna, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church in Superior, officiating. Interment icon will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation in the funeral home will be Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

Loren E. “Bud” Severson
Loren E. “Bud” Severson, 74, of 308 E. 8th St., died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born June 22, 1924, in Superior, and was a lifelong city resident. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Superior Eagles Aerie No. 80, Superior Elks Lodge No. 403 and Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847. He was employed as a switchman by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, retiring in 1984 after 37 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Laverne “Dode”; a daughter, Peggie Ann (Forrest) Wilson, Superior; two sons, John (Rebecca) Severson and Tom Severson, both of Superior; and four grandchildren, Corey and Jonathan Velin and Angela and Luke Severson, all of Superior. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Esther Severson; a sister, Mildred Severson; and a brother, Howard Severson. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Downs Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Terrance Stratton officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Bernard DeFoe
Bernard DeFoe, 52, Superior, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. Born June 6, 1946, in Washburn, he had lived most of his life in Red Cliff, but resided in Superior for the past five years. He was employed as a laborer by the National Park Service. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969 during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his former wife, Kathy DeFoe, Superior; three sons, Kevin, Superior, Kurt, Red Cliff, and Erik, Minneapolis; four granddaughters, Brianna Butterfield, Jasmine Montano, Courtney DeFoe and Kaylee DeFoe; one grandson, Erik DeFoe; nine brothers, Eugene (Joyce) Defoe, Wayne (Cathy) DeFoe, Robert (Mary) DeFoe, Raymond (Grace) DeFoe Sr., Warren DeFoe, Richard DeFoe Sr., Gary (Beverly) DeFoe Sr. and David (Jean) DeFoe, all of Red Cliff, and James (Mary Kay) DeFoe, Washburn; two sisters, Audrey Gordon and Ruth Ann (William) Topping, both of Red Cliff; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Helen DeFoe. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel Dahlberg, pastor of Cathedral of Christ the King, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post #847. Pallbearers for the service will be James DeFoe Jr., Chad DeFoe, Gregory Maher, Dean Gordon, Richard DeFoe Jr. and Ray DeFoe Jr.

William H. Zeidel
William H. Zeidel, 78, Dallas, Texas, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in Dallas. He was born June 29, 1920, in Buhl, Minn., and graduated from the former Superior Central High School. He served in the Army Air Corps. Zeidel had worked for the Great Northern Railroad and Burlington Northern Railroad and retired as an executive with KATY Railroad, its subsidiary the GH & H Railroads and its successor the Union Pacific Railroad. He had been a volunteer at the Dallas Art Museum. While residing in Superior, he was a member of the former Hammond Avenue Presbyterian Church, now known as the United Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two sons, Tom (Betty) Zeidel, Mountain View, Calif., and Bob (Julie) Zeidel, Afton, Minn.; one granddaughter, Maggie Zeidel, also of Afton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 1991. A graveside service will be in Superior at 10 a.m. Thursday in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Henry Hanna of the United Presbyterian Church officiating. Downs Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Robert Adrian Trautt
Robert Adrian Trautt, 85, Route 1, Iron River, died at his home on Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999. He was born Aug. 6, 1913 in Akron, Iowa, the son of John James and Margaret Ann Cecelia (Arbes) Trautt. He was married on June 17, 1940 in Superior to Beatrice Ann MacLean. They moved to Iron River in 1950. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice, Iron River; four sons, Robert (Beverly) Trautt, Marion, Ohio, William (Shirley) Trautt, Hayward, Thomas (Laurie) Trautt, Chippewa Falls and Steven (Jennifer) Trautt, Phoenix, Ariz.; seven daughters, Norma (Gordon) Carlson, Duluth, Patricia Klein, Delavan, Wis., Carol (Joseph) Moravchik of Ino, Kathleen Schonter, Houston, Texas, Beverly Schneidmiller, Cheyenne, Wyo., Barbara (Howard) Lindgren, St. Charles, Ill., and Laura (James) Armstrong, Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; 34 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Edward Trautt, Davis, Calif., John Trautt, Superior and Joseph Trautt, Elk Grove, Calif.; two sisters, Margaret Gray and Catherine Holt, Alton, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Lyle, Norbert, Vincent, Cyril and Steven and two grandchildren. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Iron River. Arrangements for a memorial service are pending. Burial will be at the Iron River Cemetery.

Martin E. “Marty” Correll, 32, of 514 Weeks Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at his residence. He was born Sept. 28, 1966 in Superior and was a lifelong city resident. He worked for Inter City Oil the past six years and was a district manager. Surviving are his wife, Linda; four children, Keith, Terri, Julie and Tony; a granddaughter, Jennine; his parents, Arnold and Mary Correll of Wascott; three sisters, Tracey (Kenny) Hathaway, Superior, Kristy Anderson, Spooner, and Melody Clayton, Casper, Wyo.; a brother, Jeremy Correll, currently serving with the U.S. Air Force in Minot, N.D.; his paternal grandfather, Charles Correll, South Bend, Ind.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday in the Downs Funeral Home, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Germaine A. “Gerry” Wright
Germaine A. “Gerry” Wright, 68, a longtime resident of the Duluth-Superior area, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Superior following a brief battle with cancer. Born March 16, 1930 in Minneapolis, she was a graduate of the former Central High School in Minneapolis with its class of 1948. She had been a member of the first women’s semi-pro baseball team in Minneapolis and was a speedskater in Minneapolis. She was a longtime season ticket holder and fan of the Minnesota Twins and was also an avid Minnesota Vikings fan. She previously owned and operated the Rainbow Roller Rink in Proctor for many years with her husband, Bob. More recently, they owned the World of Wheels Roller Rink in Superior since 1975. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Henrietta “Etta” Freas. Surviving are her husband, Robert “Bob” of Superior; two sons, Rick (Theresa) Wright, Minneapolis, and Phil Wright, Superior; three daughters, Kathleen Wright, Hopkins, Minn., Terrie Wright, Phoenix, Ariz., and Robyn Rosenfield, St. Paul; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Monday in the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home where a Catholic vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Cathedral of Christ the King with Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
