Germaine A. “Gerry” Wright nee Freas, 68, a longtime resident of the Duluth-Superior area, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Superior following a courgeous battle with cancer; visitation begins at 5 p.m. Monday in the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home where a Catholic vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m.; the funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Cathedral of Christ the King.

Gerald John Zepczyk, 61, of Rt. 1, Box 56, Mason, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at the Grand View Hospital, Ironwood; the funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Frost Home for Funerals, Ashland; visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, with a 7:30 p.m. rosary service, at the funeral home.

Robin L. (Johnson) Collins
Robin L. (Johnson) Collins, 32, of Arbor Vitae, Wis., formerly of Superior, died on Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at her residence. She was born on Aug. 4, 1968, to George and Rose (Bauer) Johnson. She married Matthew Collins on June 7, 1986 in Webster. She graduated from Superior Senior High School in 1984, the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1989 with a bachelor of science degree in psychology and in 1991 with a master of education degree in school psychology. Subsequent graduate studies lead to certification in educational administration for director of pupil services from UWS. Collins practiced school psychology in the Hurley School District from 1992 to 1997 and for various schools in the Cooperative Education Service Agency #9 between 1992 and 1995. From July 1997 through September 1998, she served as director of pupil services in the Hurley School District and a dual role as director of special education and school psychologist in the Mercer School District. Among the many interests she had were tennis, mountain biking, power boating and camping. She is survived by her husband Matthew, of Arbor Vitae; two daughters, Brittany and Brooke Collins, both at home; her mother, Rose Johnson of Arbor Vitae; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orlin and Ardyss Collins of Superior; three brothers, Calvin (Sherrie) Johnson of St. Paul, George (Roxanne) Johnson of Greenville, S.C., and Eric Johnson of St. Paul; one sister, Joy (Dave) Preston of Superior; two sister-in-laws, Amanda (Tracy) Holcomb of Woodbury, Minn., and Corrina (Randy) Collins of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, George Johnson, on July 14, 1998. Visitation will be on Friday at Bolger Funeral Home Chapel of Minocqua from 4-7 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Woodruff at 2 p.m. with a visitation one hour prior the service. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robin Collins Scholarship Fund.

Orville C. Clark
Orville C. Clark, 58, of 201 S. Grove, Waupun, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, of complications from leukemia while vacationing in California. He was born on Dec. 26, 1940, in Ashland, the son of Carver and Alice (Rosen) Clark. He married Cheryl Bastian on April 14, 1973. He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1959 and then in 1960 entered the U.S. Navy as an Electrician's Mate Class “A” and served on board the USS Salmon #573 from 1960-64. In 1968 he received a bachelor's degree in upper elementary education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. In 1970 he earned a master’s degree in special education from UW-Oshkosh. From 1971-73 he studied administration courses and served a special education administrative internship at UW-Madison. By 1977 he had completed requirements for the district administrator, director of instruction, elementary-junior high school principal and level "A" director of special education certifications and licenses. In 1975 he moved to Waupun, where he become associate director of special education for CESA #6, then in 1997 due to health problems he retired and became director of Alternative Programs for the Emotionally Disturbed Children. Clark was active in many educational organizations to include Wisconsin Council of School Administrators Association, Wisconsin Council Administrators of Special Education, Phi Delta Kappa and the Council for Exceptional Children. Along with his interest in teaching, he published many papers and curricula, as well as presenting numerous workshops and teacher training seminars. He also was an adjunct professor for Cardinal Stritch College, Milwaukee. Survivors include his wife Cheryl of Waupun; one son, Jeffery (Therese) Clark of Germantown, Wis.; three daughters, Shani (Scott) Quinn of Hubertus, Wis., Jennifer Clark of Black River Falls, and Heather Clark of Oshkosh; three grandchildren, Brennan Quinn, Michaela Quinn and Rachel Clark; two brothers, James (Nancy) Clark of Sarasota, Fla., and Orvin Clark of Barrington, Ill.; and a sister, Carla (Charles) Williams of South Range. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. A memorial has been established in Clark’s name for scholarships in the field of special education. Memorials can be directed to: Orville C. Clark Educational Foundation, c/o Ken Donahue, Chester School, N 10460 County Hwy I, Burnett, WI 53922. A memorial service will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Waupun High School in Waupun, followed by a gathering in the cafeteria for family and friends.

Glenn E. “Nick” Nickerson
Glenn E. “Nick” Nickerson, 83, of 908 23rd Ave. E., died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at his residence. He was born March 30, 1915, in Superior, where he resided most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. Nickerson had been employed as a laborer by various construction firms and while working highway construction had worked on the building of Route 66. He was also a switchman for the former Great Northern Railroad and owned and operated an antiques store in St. Paul. He is survived by a daughter, Lynn (William) Brittan, Superior; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews; and eight grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Bernice Nickerson, and two sisters, Norma Greenseth and Eldora Latscher. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Presuhn of Christ Lutheran Church officiating. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Cathedral School Scholarship Fund.

Nina Osmundson
Nina Osmundson, 90, formerly of 5813 John Ave., died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, in St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born Nov. 5, 1908, in Superior, and was a lifelong city resident. She had been a longtime elementary teacher in the School District of Superior and had also taught in Germany and Okinawa. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and its Martha-Elizabeth Circle, the Superior Area Retired Educators Association, Wisconsin Retired Educators Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and the American Association of Retired Persons. Survivors include a sister, Esther Johnson, Longview, Wash. She was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Samson; four brothers, Clarence, Oscar, Sam and Arthur Osmundson; and her parents, Elef and Mary Osmundson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Peterson officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Corey and Andrew Mathiassen, Jeff Dahl and Roger Osmundson. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Thursday at Downs Funeral Home. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church.

Ann Scheldrup
Ann Scheldrup, 78, 2315 Banks Ave., died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior. She was born April 25, 1920, in Ashland, and resided in Superior for most of her life. She was a launderer for the former St. Mary’s Hospital in Superior and also worked for Holzberg’s and One Hour Martinizing. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King and had been a member of the former St. Louis Catholic Church. Surviving are her husband Trigve; two sons, Ron Scheldrup, Superior, and Eugene (Shirley) Scheldrup, Lake Minnesuing; a daughter, Diane (Ralph) Rolson, Superior; one grandson, Todd Scheldrup; a granddaughter, Angela (Chad) Anderson; a great-grandson, Eric Anderson; one sister, Emily Nelson, Duluth; and a brother, Jan Janowski, Chicago. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Maryanna (Ropiak) Janowski; two brothers, Ray and James Janowski; and six sisters, Pauline Janowski, Sophie Zepczyk, Sue Coleman, Maureen Simmerling, Valeria Sobotka and Rose Slaby. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg of Cathedral of Christ the King officiating. Visitation in the funeral home begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Interment icon will be in Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ron, Eugene and Todd Scheldrup, Ralph Rolson and Chad Anderson.

Arthur Louis Lagae
Arthur Louis Lagae, 75, a resident of Solon Springs since 1979 and formerly from Superior, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, Ore. He was born June 4, 1920, in Superior, to Rene and Mary (LaPerre) Lagae. On Nov. 28, 1946, he married Teddy Gervais in Superior. Lagae was an Army veteran, serving during World War II in the field artillery. He had been part owner of Allouez Lumber Company, a family-owned business since 1905, retiring in 1980. He was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church in Solon Springs, Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post #499 in Gordon, and the Belgian Club in Allouez. Survivors include his wife, Toddy, Solon Springs; a son, Jim (Cindy) Lagae, Superior; a daughter, Janet (Jeff) Hansen, Medford, Ore.; three grandsons, Thomas, David and Jerald Lagae; and a brother, Clovis Lagae, and a sister, Emma VanDriessche, both of Superior. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Marshall, and two sisters, Leah and Vivian. The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Gabe Baltes at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Pius Catholic Church in Solon Springs. A military honor guard will be provided by Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post #499. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs. Interment icon will be in the springtime at St. Pius Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Thomas, David, Roger and Paul Lagae, Floyd Pederson and Dennis Smet.

Kenneth Charles Holt
Kenneth Charles Holt, 1-year-old son of Jerry and Kim (Johnson) Holt, South Range, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in St. Luke’s Hospital. He was born on Nov. 11, 1998, in Duluth. He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Claudia Johnson, and an uncle, Kenneth Degenhardt. He is survived by his parents; a sister Amber; great-grandmother Bernice Brown in Superior; grandmother Nancy Holt in Superior; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. wake service at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Andrew Ricci of Cathedral of Christ the King officiating.

Bernice Emily McGrath
Bernice Emily McGrath, 88, of Superior, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at Middle River Health Care Facility. She was born on May 17, 1910, to William and Agnes (Ulvin) O'Brien in Iron River. She graduated from Central High School and from St. Mary's School of Nursing Class of 1929. She had also attended nursing school in Cook County, Chicago, Ill. She had worked as a special duty nurse in Duluth and Superior. She was active in the Superior Figure Skating Club and the Superior Garden Club. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, the National Catholic Society of Forestors and was well-known for her rosemaling. She is survived by son Patrick B. (Jerlyn) McGrath, Superior; a daughter, Maurine T. (Francis) Golden, Camarillo, Calif.; a brother, James J. O'Brien, Superior; a sister, Laurel (Donald ) Golden, Tujunga, Calif.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers William R. and Edward O'Brien; husband, Paul H. in November, 1988; and a son, Michael. Services are pending. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Joanne F. Laberdie
Joanne F. Laberdie, 76, 2015 Ogden Ave., died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 7, 1922, in Superior, and was a lifelong city resident. She had been employed by Douglas County Social Services in income maintenance. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Passero, Superior; two sons, Dennis Laberdie, Mountain Side, N.J., and Jerry (Laura) Laberdie, Superior; two grandchildren, Niki (Brad) Laakso, Superior, and Vincent Passero, Madison; one great-granddaughter, Grace Ann Laakso, Superior; and a brother, James Gradin, Tustin, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred, on Sept. 19, 1998. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew Ricci of Cathedral of Christ the King officiating. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Al Kurtz, Jarred Kenville, John Grimstad, Tim and Tom Laberdie and George Austreng. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Cathedral School Scholarship Fund. Visitation in the funeral home will be Wednesday from noon until the time of service.
