James Warren Caragan
James Warren Caragan, 62, Orlando, Fla., a former longtime resident of Patzau, died Friday, April 16, 1999, at Florida East Hospital in Orlando. Born Dec. 30, 1936, in Superior, he resided in Patzau until moving to Florida in 1987. He worked at the Challenge Center in Superior as a client for many years before relocating to Orlando, where he was a client of the Quest South Facility. He was a member of the Variety Club of America and the Berean Grace Fellowship Church. Surviving are a sister, Vivian (Edward) McCartney, Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Charles Caragan, Las Vegas, Nev.; many nieces and nephews; and one great-grandniece. He was preceded in death by parents Signa M. Caragan on Nov. 26, 1994, and his father, Gust D. Caragan, on Oct. 14, 1981. Visitation in the Dobbs Funeral Home, Orlando, will be Tuesday from 6 p.m. until the 7 p.m. service. Interment will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior. Reva A. (Farmer) Roatch
Reva A. (Farmer) Roatch, 87, of Wisconsin Avenue, Superior, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at her residence. She was born June 2, 1911, in Webster, to Myrtle and James Cairns. She resided in the Webster until moving to Duluth, residing there from 1948 until moving to Superior in 1969. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Superior and the Royal Neighbors fraternal organization. She had been employed by the former Ojibway Press in Duluth during the 1960s and was also a self-employed seamstress. Surviving are her husband, Irving W.; four daughters, Verla A. Farmer, Columbia Heights, Minn., Mary Jane Vitullo, Blaine, Minn., Della Follano, also of Blaine, and Irma Jean (Harold) Dallmann, Moose Lake, Minn.; two stepsons, Robert L. (Carolyn) Roatch, Franklin, Tenn., and Patrick W. (Kyong Cha) Roatch, of Middleton, R.I.; a stepdaughter, Jan (Russell H.) Hendrickson, Superior; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Erma Brown, Seattle, Wash.; two brothers, Lee (Lavonne) Cairns, Dakota, Minn., and William (Wanda) Cairns, La Crosse; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Owen Farmer, in 1969; a grandson, Jeffrey Vitullo, in 1993; a sister, Retta Clappsaddle; five brothers, Glen, Maurice, Allen, John and Neil Cairns; and a niece, Peggy Lammi. Visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Stoskopf officiating. Interment icon will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Webster. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, John Vitullo, David Follano, Glenn and Waino Dallmann, Mark Palmer and Russ Hendrickson. Harry Goldberg
Harry Goldberg, 85, of 2415 E. 5th St., died Monday, April 19, 1999, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 1, 1914, in Superior and was the owner of Goldberg's Meat Market at 603 Hughitt Ave. He and the former Blanche London were married May 28, 1939. He is survived by his wife, Blanche; a son, David (Melodie) Goldberg, Superior; one daughter, Diane 'Susie' (Tony) Peterson, Cottage Grove, Minn.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Sam Goldberg, Superior, Charles (Shirley) Goldberg of Arizona, and Donald (Esther) Goldberg, in Florida; and a sister, Gerry (Lester) Fergal, in Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Ida Goldberg; two sisters, Hilda Goldberg and Ann Stern and a brother, Edward Goldberg. The funeral will be held at noon Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home with Rabbi Grafstein of Adas Israel Congregation, Duluth, officiating. Interment icon will be in the Superior Hebrew Cemetery.

Sigrid L. Anderson
Sigrid L. Anderson, 83, a resident of 1809 John Ave., died on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, in St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born on June 19, 1915, in Brule to Emil and Hilda (Johnson) Hermanson, and had lived in the Superior area for most of her lifetime, except from 1944 to 1960, when she lived in the Twin Cities. Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker, a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior and enjoyed playing bingo and cards, dancing and helping others. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Alan T. Anderson who died in 1958. Survivors include a son, Gerald (Barbara) Johnson of St. Paul, Minn.; a daughter, Patricia, (Dan) Klarner of Superior; a brother, Roy Hermanson of Wentworth; a sister, Elma (Ernest) Erkkila of Poplar; a close friend, Walter Fagerlin; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday from noon until the 1:30 p.m. funeral in Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Rev. David Eckman will officiate with interment to follow on Monday in Hillside Cemetery, Minneapolis. Arrangements are by the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Helen E. Dahlgren
Helen E. Dahlgren, 82, died Friday, April 16, 1999, in St. Francis Home in the Park. Born Oct. 9, 1916, in Albia, Iowa, she had been a Superior resident since 1989. Mrs. Dahlgren was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior and a lifelong member of the Museum Auxiliary. She also enjoyed outdoor activities such as gardening and fishing. She was a housewife with several periods of part-time work in retail establishments. She is survived by two sisters, Marge (Lawrence) Drews, Brule and Dorothy (Bert) Villiard, Delano, Calif.; two brothers, Albert Vidas, Kenosha and Robert Vidas, Bristol, Wis.; a brother-in-law, Dean Dahlgren, Arden Hills, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death her husband, James, on Oct. 20, 1979, after 24 years of marriage and her parents, George and Elizabeth Vidas. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Israel H. Lavine
Dr. Israel H. Lavine, 1805 Hammond Ave., died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born to Sarah (Chucker) and Harry Lavine on May 1, 1906, in Superior, and was a city resident most of his life. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior and completed his medical degree at UW-Madison. He was in private practice in Melrose, Wis., for 20 years. In 1956, he returned to Superior to join his brother, Dr. Max M. Lavine, in private practice. Together, with a group of local doctors, they founded the Superior Clinic in 1965. He retired from medical practice in 1987. He was also one of the leaders in building the new Temple Beth El in Superior. Surviving are his children, Sharon (Daniel) Mosenkis, Fairlawn, N.J., Susan Lavine (John) Coleman, Cambridge, Mass., and Steven (Janet Sternburg Lavine) Lavine, Encino, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Rose (Irving) Eisenberg, San Francisco, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Harriet H. Rosen Lavine, on Sept. 15, 1975; two brothers, Dr. Max Lavine on Sept. 18, 1981, and Ben Lavine, Jan. 12, 1999; and a sister, Elsie Lavine. Rabbi Amy Bernstein of Temple Israel in Duluth will officiate at the 2:30 p.m. funeral Friday in Downs Funeral Home. Interment icon will be in the Superior Hebrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Book Purchased Fund, which will be established at the Superior Public Library in honor of Dr. I.H. Lavine and his friend, the late Barry Singer.

Henry M. Hammond
Henry M. Hammond, 74, of McGregor, Minn., died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Park Point Manor in Duluth. He was born June 8, 1924, in Foxboro, the son of George and Hilda (Smith) Hammond. He grew up and attended schools in Foxboro. He moved with his family to the McGregor area in 1939. He served in the U.S. National Guard in his early years. He logged in the McGregor area all of his life, retiring in 1989. He married Constance "Connie" Koerber on Oct. 5, 1947, at Chisholm, Minn. They made their home in the McGregor area. He was a member of the Big Sandy Christian Missionary Alliance Church. He is survived by four sisters, Annie Weld of Roseville, Minn., Kathleen VanGuiIder of Superior, Arlene Millis of Minneapolis, and Norma Garcia of Dallas, Ore.; two brothers, Phil Hammond of Anchorage, Alaska, and Norman Nelson of Bozeman, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Connie in 1997, five brothers and two sisters. A memorial service will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church near McGregor with the Rev. Steve DeMars officiating. Burial will be in Pine Needle Cemetery there. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to service on Friday. Arrangements are with McGregor Funeral Home in McGregor.

Lois F. DeShane
Lois F. DeShane, 85, of 1800 New York Ave., died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born Feb. 26, 1914, in Superior, and was a lifelong city resident. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church. She formerly operated Miss DeShane's Ice Cream Parlor in Billings Park for many years and was also employed many years by the Capitol Tea Rooms in Superior. She was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria DeShane, and her mother, Alma. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. Henry Hanna will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by Downs Funeral Home.

Henry F. "Hank" Logee Jr.
Henry F. "Hank" Logee Jr., 65, of Mukwonago, formerly of Superior, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. He was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Superior on Nov. 3, 1933, to Henry F. Sr. and Crystal (nee Stoecker) Logee. On Dec. 28, 1963, he married Patricia A. Prueher in Thorp, Wis. He received his bachelor of arts and master in music education degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He taught music publicly and privately to students of all ages for 40 plus years in Superior, Viola, Thorp, Wausau and Mukwonago. He enjoyed performing as well, and had remarked that "he never loved any activity as much as playing the accordion." He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Mukwonago, and a former member of the Laflin Lodge #247 F&AM, Mukwonago, and the Waukesha Musicians Union. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Patricia; four daughters, Jean (Wayne) Mengel of Letts, Iowa, Katherine Logee of San Francisco, Calif., Julie (Ted) QuigIey of Milwaukee and Renee (Todd) Logee-Hensersky, Greenfield, Wis.; one grandchild, Sara Mengel; four sisters, Fay Bratt of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Pat (Bob) Lahti of Backus, Minn., Delores (Jim) Guist of Stillwater, Minn., and Crystal (Carl) Cordts of Foxboro; his father-in-law, Herman Prueher of Chippewa Falls; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Phyllis Kimball, and two half-sisters. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at Schmidt & Bartelt-Van Valin Funeral Home, 315 Main St., Mukwonago, followed by a funeral Mass at 7 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Mukwonago. Margaret Elizabeth 'Bette' Hammerbeck
Margaret Elizabeth 'Bette' Hammerbeck, 84, formerly of 1001 Clough Ave., died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at the home of Robert and Alice Hammerbeck, 1828 E. 12th St. Born Dec. 15, 1914 in Superior, she was a lifelong city resident. Mrs. Hammerbeck had been employed as a bookkeeper by The Daily Telegram before her retirement. She was a member of Bayside Baptist Church, its Senior Fellowship and Esther Circle and was a former member of the XYZ Club. Surviving are a daughter, Claudia Brewer, Denver, Colo.; five sons, Robert (Alice) Hammerbeck, Superior, James (Betty) Hammerbeck, Colorado Springs, Colo., John (Janice) Hammerbeck, Henderson, Nev., David (Ruthann) Hammerbeck, of Houlton, Wis. and Mark (Mary) Hammerbeck, Los Angeles, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Norman Hanson, Spooner, and John (Julie) Hanson, Bloomfield Hills, Mich. She was preceded in death by her parents, Olaf and Julia (Johnson) Hanson, a son, Donald Hammerbeck, a brother, Harold Hanson and a sister, Olive Olson. Sally R. O'Cordan
Sally R. O'Cordan, 42, of 608 8th Ave. E., died Thursday, April 22, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center following a lengthy battle with cancer. Mrs. O'Cordan had been employed for many years as a legal assistant by the law firm of Ashley, Hannula and Halom and was also employed as a learning center coordinator by Computers Don't Byte. She was a member of Bayside Baptist Church in Superior. Surviving are her husband, Michael; two daughters, Nicole (Scott) Wolden-Nyberg and Carrie Wolden, both of Superior; a grandson, Devin M. Borstad, Superior; her mother, Ruth Williams, Palmetto, Fla.; a sister, Karen Marsh, Duluth; and a brother, Eugene (Tina) Johnson, Superior. She was preceded in death by her father, Malcolm Johnson and stepfather, Dean Williams. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bayside Baptist Church with Rev. Leonard Carlson officiating. Gertrude J. Olson
Gertrude J. Olson, 69, 2725 Hill Ave., Superior, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born Sept. 5, 1929, in Camden, N.J., to Gertrude Sarah (nee Britton) and Byard Ewing Dawson. She was a Superior resident for most of her life. Initially, she was assistant director of the Superior-Douglas County Senior Center from 1976 to 1980, and in 1980 until the present she served as its director. She was instrumental in development of the new Senior Center at North 16th Street and Tower Avenue. She was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church and its choir as well as the SDCSC. She was a charter member and past president of the Wisconsin Association of Senior Centers. She was a member of the board of directors of the Mental Health Association and a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Superior No. 1190. She was active in the leadership of the A.A. group for over 20 years. She was secretary of the Douglas County Commission of Aging. She served on the board of the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups and was secretary and treasurer of Local District Eight of the coalition. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. She is survived by a son, Robert, Sparks, Nev.; two daughters, Nancy (Bruce) Blahnik, Missoula, Mont., and Robin (Jim) Davis, Tupelo, Miss.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, J. Robert Dawson, Superior; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Eugene, and a special friend, Matt McConnell. The Mass of Christian burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Assumption Catholic Church, the Rev. Ronald Olson officiating, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Downs Funeral Home with a Rosary by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Superior No. 1190 at 6 p.m. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the A.A. or the Superior-Douglas County Senior Center. Eleanor Merino
Eleanor Merino, 85, 1316 N. 14th St., Superior, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born May 5, 1913, in Floodwood, Minn., to Catherine Barbara (nee Schneider) and John Francis Paquette. She had been a Superior resident since 1918. She was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King. She had been a manager for the Sears store in Superior from which she retired and was also employed at several women's apparel stores in Superior. She is survived by two sons, John 'Jack' Merino, Minneapolis, Minn., and James 'Jim' Merino, Superior; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Olive O'Connell, Princeville, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey Horace Merino, on Aug. 22, 1980; four brothers, Roy, Sidney, Francis and Donald Paquette; five sisters, Carmel Mulcare, Louise Hiland, Odessa Branley, Beatrice Hunt and Charlotte Montgomery; and a grandson, Scott Merino. The Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the Cathedral of Christ the King with the Rev. Fr. Daniel Dahlberg the celebrant. Interment icon will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Benjamin Charles Cosgrove
Benjamin Charles Cosgrove, 18, 1619 E. 4th St., Superior, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in a traffic accident on Tower Avenue. He was born Oct. 7, 1980, in St. Louis Park, Minn., and had resided in Superior since 1989. He was a senior at Superior Senior High School. He was employed at the Shack Smokehouse & Grille. He played in the men's city softball league and when he was younger he played Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He enjoyed playing boot hockey, fishing and hunting. He is survived by his father, James M. Cosgrove, Deephaven, Minn.; his mother, Lynne E. Cosgrove, Superior; a brother, Kelly (Sheri Anderson) Cosgrove, Superior; his grandmother, Joyce Peterson, Superior; his great-grandmother, Delma Conner, Superior; his godfather, Larry Sallee, Rochester, Minn.; a special friend, Shanna Trennepohl, Superior; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cori Lyn Cosgrove; his grandfather, Edward M. 'Mickey' Cosgrove; his grandparents, Charles and Marian Sallee; his great-grandparents, Harry and Nellie Cosgrove and Ralph and Edith Wiggins, and a great-grandfather, Clate Conner. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Laurence Goebel of the Superior United Methodist Parish officiating. Ruby K. Doris Olson
Ruby K. Doris Olson, 88, formerly of West Duluth and St. Ann's Residence, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior. She was born Feb. 26, 1911, to Samuel and Selma Doris and was raised in Parkville, Minn. She was a graduate of Mountain Iron High School and Virginia Junior College. She was employed at Ketola's Department Store in Virginia and later at U.S. government offices in Washington, D.C., and Minnesota. She was married to Donald Olson in Duluth in 1957. She was a member of the Salem Covenant Church, its Ladies Missionary Sewing Circle and Martha Circle and the Retired Federal Employees group. She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Virgil) Nelson, Poplar, and Cheryl Stephens, Duluth; a son, Lawrence (LaVerne) Olson, Fenton, Ill.; four grandchildren, a sister, Geraldine Brimsek, Virginia, Minn.; two nieces and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three sisters, Melba, Jane and Laurel; and two brothers, Samuel Jr. and John. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Covenant Church, Duluth, with interment at the Calvary Cemetery, Virginia. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Richard Zanuzoski
Richard Zanuzoski, 84, 1001 Clough Ave., Superior, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior. He was born June 26, 1915, in Superior, and was a lifelong Superior resident. He was the owner and operator of Zanuzoski's Liquor. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge and St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. He also was a sponsor for the Babe Ruth Baseball League. He is survived by his wife, Merriam 'June' Zanuzoski, Superior; a son, William, Orlando, Fla.; three daughters, Lori (Lee) Francisco, Superior; Diane Zanuzoski, Cancun, Mexico, and Debra (Gary) Schafter, San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren, David Banks, Mollee and Nikkee Francisco; one sister, Marion (Ray) Pendergast, Stevens Point; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, David, in 1966; a sister, Florence; and five brothers, Mike, Bill, Eddie, Harry and George. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Faith United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Henry Hanna officiating. Interment icon will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Esther C. (Peterson) Amys
Esther C. (Peterson) Amys, 88, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born Dec. 27, 1910, in Sandstone, Minn., and moved to Superior with her family at the age of five. She married Peter R. Amys Sr. on May 28, 1929. They resided in Allouez for many years before retiring in South Range. She attended the Ericsson Elementary School and was graduated from the former Central High School. She was employed as a seamstress with the former Ekstrom Clothing Store, Superior. She was a lifelong member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the former Mother's Chorus and the former Deborah Chapter of the Eastern Star. She is survived by eight daughters and two sons: Jacqueline (Robert) Rukavina, Duluth, Joyce (William) Thomas and Nancy Schofield, Kenosha, Esther (Richard) Nolan, Superior, Patricia (Wayne) Asbury, South Range, Dianna (Arthur) Marquart and Carolyn Amys, Superior, Andrea (Don) Midbon, Green Bay, Peter R. (Barbara) Amys Jr., Omaha, Neb., and Jeffrey (Delores) Amys, Aurora, Colo.; 29 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Kay F. Benlick
Kay F. Benlick, 66, 1611 E. 8th St., Superior, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born July 9, 1932, in Superior, and was a lifelong resident. She was a homebound teacher for the School District of Superior. She is survived by her husband, George 'Mike' Benlick; two daughters, Lisa (John) Becker, Hayward, and Britt (Steve) DeVinck, Superior; three grandchildren, Eric, Jessica and Sara DeVinck; and her mother, Marie T. Bashaw, Superior. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Dahlberg, a family friend, officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Richard Zanuzoski
Richard Zanuzoski, 84, 1001 Clough Ave., Superior, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior. He was born Jan. 26, 1915, in Superior, and was a lifelong Superior resident. He was the owner and operator of Zanuzoski's Liquor. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge and St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. He also was a sponsor for the Babe Ruth Baseball League. He is survived by his wife, Merriam 'June' Zanuzoski, Superior; a son, William, Orlando, Fla.; three daughters, Lori (Lee) Francisco, Superior, Diane Zanuzoski, Cancun, Mexico, and Debra (Gary) Schafter, San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren, David Banks, Mollee and Nikkee Francisco; one sister, Marion (Ray) Pendergast, Stevens Point; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, David, in 1966; a sister, Florence; and five brothers, Mike, Bill, Eddie, Harry and George. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at United Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Henry Hanna officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Lavalle G. 'Rosie' Fredrick
Lavalle G. 'Rosie' Fredrick, 87, 2415 E. 5th St., Superior, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in Duluth. She was born June 11, 1911, in Menomonie, and had resided in Superior most of her life. She was employed as a bookbinder by the Mast Printing Co. until it closed and then at the Midland Co-op Printing Plant until she retired. She was a member of the Sew and Sew's Club and Martha's Circle at the Zion Lutheran Church. She is survived by a son, Raymond (Emily) Fredrick, Superior; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin, on June 6, 1987; her parents; and one brother. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. Terrance Stratton of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is 9:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. George R. Nelson
George R. Nelson, 72, Oroville, Calif., died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in the Oroville Hospital. He was born Aug. 15, 1926, in Superior. He was a veteran, serving with the U.S. Army/Air Force in 1945-46. He was married to Della Lind in Foxboro on May 3, 1947. They resided there until until 1952. As a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local No. 228, he and his wife traveled extensively. He worked on construction. They eventually settled in Oroville in 1959 to begin working on the Oroville Dam. His occupation was construction superintendent and he retired from Kiewit Construction after 35 years of service. After retiring in 1988, he pursued interests in woodworking, gardening, car restoration and travel. He is survived by his wife, Della Nelson, Oroville; a son, Michael Nelson, Vallejo, Calif.; two daughters, Susan McElroy, Vacaville, Calif., and Robyn Gallego, Woodland, Calif.; two grandchildren, Krista Enos and Shawn Gomez, Paradise, Calif.; four brothers, Warren Nelson, Superior, David Nelson, Green Bay, Harvey Nelson, Reno, Nev., and Jim Nelson, Oroville; and a sister, Carol Gordon, Roseville, Calif. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Scheer Memorial Chapel in Oroville with Nolan Stanton officiating. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Oroville Rescue Mission or the Salvation Army.

Mary (Post) Theriault
Mary (Post) Theriault, 58, St. Paul, Minn., died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. She was born on Oct. 13, 1940, in Superior. She was married to Ron Theriault on Oct. 1, 1969, and they recently celebrated 29 years of marriage. She was employed as a high school teacher in the St. Paul and Minneapolis area. She was a member of the Nativity Catholic Church in St. Paul. She enjoyed gardening and trips to the North Shore. She is survived by her husband Ron Theriault; a son, Andrew Theriault, St. Paul; a daughter, Elizabeth Theriault, St. Paul; a brother, John Post, Bayfield; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Elizabeth Post; a brother, Ferdinand Post; and two aunts, Mary and Martha Lederman. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. James Tobolski, pastor, as celebrant. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Jean Evelyn (Miner) Burr
Jean Evelyn (Miner) Burr, 65, Eau Claire, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at her home. She was born on Sept. 21, 1933, in Superior, to Jacque and Evelyn (Larson) Miner. She was married to Eugene Burr on March 17, 1955, in Bloomer. She resided in Eau Claire for the duration of her life. She was employed at Uniroyal-Goodrich for 10 years, resigning upon the onset of ill health. She grew up in resorts in northern Wisconsin that her father owned and became an avid sportswoman, enjoying hunting and fishing. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and spent time at her cabin, showing them how to fish. She is survived by her husband, Eugene; a son, Howard (Shirley) Burr; two daughters, Sandra Burr-Ming and Susan Burr; her grandchildren, Nicole and Natasha Ming, Justin and Rachel Burr and Sabrina Burr-Lindeen; four brothers, Richard (Jeanette) Miner, Webster, Jack (Mary) Miner, Gordon, Warren Miner, Superior, and Charles Miner, Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Jack and Terry; a daughter, Debra; a brother, Norman Miner; and by a sister, Joyce Ronning.

Dennis E. Johnson
Dennis E. Johnson, 62, 1415 N. 26th St., Superior, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at his lake home in Barnes. He was born Jan. 19, 1937, in Ashland, and was raised in Port Wing. He moved to Superior in 1964. He was a teacher at Blaine Elementary School for 25 years, retiring in 1995. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 80 and a member of the Superior Federation of Teachers and a golf league in Barnes. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and being at his lake home. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He married Marlene Blomgren on Feb. 20, 1965, in Port Wing, and they recently celebrated 34 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, Marlene, he is survived by a son, Thomas Miller, Spooner; two daughters, Tracee (Tom) Garrick and Kimberly (Jay) McIntyre, both of Duluth; four grandchildren, Erin and Amanda Miller and Nicole and Scott Garrick; his mother, Hulda Johnson, Port Wing; four brothers, David (Joyce Miller) Johnson, Brule, Darryl (Kaye) Johnson, Ironwood, Mich., Donald (Pat) Johnson, Iron River, and Dwight (Louise) Johnson, Port Wing; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Evald Johnson. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. James Kasperson, pastor of First Lutheran Church, Port Wing, officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Port Wing. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Antonette Moretto
Antonette Moretto, 71, formerly of the town of Superior, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Southdale Health Care. She was born in Dewey on June 22, 1927, and had been an area resident all of her life. She is survived by five brothers, Teto (Theresa) Moretto and Julio (Lena) Moretto, both of Oliver, Oliver (Irene) Moretto and Joe Moretto, both of the town of Superior, and Victor (Shirley) Moretto, Wrenshall, Minn.; a sister, Marie (James) Angelo, Superior, who was treated as a special sister by Antonette; and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alphonso and Jerry Moretto, and by three brothers, Tony, Ido and Sarafino. The Mass of Christian burial will be at Holy Assumption Catholic Church on Friday at 1:30 p.m. with visitation at the church beginning at 12:30 p.m. The Rev. Ronald Olson will officiate and interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jason Stuart Bergren
Jason Stuart Bergren, 21, of 7930 S. Dowling Lake Road, died on Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. Jason was born in Superior on April 25, 1978, to Tim S. and Jodi "Jo" (Thorssen) Bergren and had lived in the Superior area for all of his lifetime. He was currently a student at Superior Senior High School and would have graduated this June. Jason had been active with the Special Olympics in bowling. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Stuart Bergren, in 1981. Jason is survived by his parents, a brother Tim J. "TJ" Bergren in Spring Park, Minn.; his maternal grandparents, Willard and Ardice Thorssen, Bennett; his paternal grandmother, Crystal Bergren of Hawthorne, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m., Friday, at the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. The Rev. Darrell Nelson of the Mission Covenant Church, Poplar, will officiate. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

Raymond J. Patrick
Raymond J. Patrick, 68, Minong, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at his home. He was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Weyerhaeuser, the son of the late Mike and Anna (Buykoski) Patrick. He is survived by a son, Kirk Patrick, Chicago, Ill.; a grandson, Raymond John Patrick; a brother, Ted Patrick, Trego; and two sisters, Helen Wilk, Green Lake, and Tekle Kubit, California. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home in Minong, the Rev. Jim Powers officiating, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Minong. Richard R. Mace
Richard R. Mace, 80, 1123 N. 22nd St., Superior, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior following a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Browerville, Minn., and had resided in Superior since 1945. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He retired in 1981 as a conductor on the Burlington Northern Railroad after 33 years of service. He was a member of the United Transportation Union Local No. 832, the Henry S. Blomberg Post No. 847, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Elks Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife Doris; four daughters, Sharon Carignan, Susan (Richard) Clark, Connie (John Trapp) Austin and Terri (Patrick) Van Ert, all of Superior; a son, Richard (Cindy) Mace, Duluth; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Beattie Cline, Clarissa, Minn.; and a brother, Archie Mace, Browerville, Minn. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Lee, Shorty, Harry, Wilbur and Fay. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Thor Sorenson of Hermantown Community Church officiating. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and continue until the time of the service. Pallbearers will be Richard Clark, Ryan Clark, Patrick Van Ert, John Trapp, Chris Carignan, Shane 'Buck' Carignan and Rico Mace.

Mildred F. Gelhaar
Mildred F. Gelhaar, 83, Barnes, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. She was born April 15, 1916, in Jackson, Tenn. She was married to Ralph Gelhaar in Chicago, Ill. She was employed at a large sewing machine company and was a waitress at the Plaza Hotel in Chicago for many years. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Post No. 8329, Barnes. She and her husband traveled the country to wherever they could golf. She enjoyed gardening, fishing and grouse-hunting. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ralph; a son, Howard Blough, Flowwood, Miss., and by a sister, Lee Knockaert, Milan, Tenn. No services are being held at this time. Arrangements are by the Crawford Funeral Service, Duluth.

John Carl (Hap) Gylland
John Carl (Hap) Gylland, 64, 11824 Point Creek Road, Newton, Wis., died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 22, 1999. at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was born May 14, 1934, in Superior, the son of the late Carl and Edna Flaten Gylland. He was a 1952 graduate of Superior East High School and also obtained an associate degree in tool engineering. On Oct. 16, 1953, he was married to Barbara Gamble. He worked as a railroad telegrapher in Superior after his marriage. From 1955 to 1958, he served with the U.S. Army Signal Corp. including a tour in Greenland. In 1996 he retired from the Foster Needle Co., Manitowoc, where he worked for 39 years. During his retirement years, he enjoyed golfing and genealogy. He was a past master of the Manitowoc Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; one son, Jeffrey (Patti) Gylland, Cedarburg; four daughters, Susan (Jerome) Klann, Franklin; Andrea (Stanley) Smith, Eagan, Minn.; Julie (Steven) Walber, Kiel, and Paula Gylland, Franklin, and nine grandchildren. A memorial service was held Sunday at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, Kiel, with the Rev. Erick Adams, pastor of Kiel Alliance Church, officiating. Cremation has taken place. A memorial has been established for the American Red Cross International Response Fund ' Kosovo, 1816 Washington St., Manitowoc, WI 54220.

Raymond Edgar Clark
Raymond Edgar Clark, 76, Washburn, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at the Memorial Medical Center, Ashland. He was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Milltown, Mont., the son of Eustace and Ida (Fields) Clark. He moved to Iron River, Wis., with his family at the age of 10, where they resided for eight years. In 1940 he moved to Chippewa Falls where he resided for 36 years. In his later years he resided in Hurley for eight years before moving to Washburn in 1991. Raymond had a lifelong love of trains. He enjoyed taking train trips around the area and reading about other people's travels. He is survived by two sisters, Bernice Dashner, Ashland, and Dorothy Denny, Brule; a brother, Robert (Frances) Clark, Mukwonago, Wis., and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Eustace, in 1959; his mother, Ida, in 1982; and two brothers, Maynard and Gerald. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, at the Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn with Rev. Jon Arneson officiating. Interment icon will be in the Iron River City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
