Jane Lee McPherson
Jane Lee McPherson, 43, Superior, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Superior. She was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a bachelor of science degree in social work. At the time of her death she was employed in the Rehabilitation Unit of Miller-Dwan Medical Center in Duluth. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Eibon; her mother, Esther McPherson; one granddaughter, Aili Rose; two sisters, Ann Borich and Mary Yashimoto; and two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her father, William McPherson. Services are pending with Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence F. 'Larry' Williams
Lawrence F. 'Larry' Williams, 56, Superior, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born Aug. 13, 1942, in Charlottesville, Va., to Frank and Judith (Sprouse) Williams. He had resided in Superior most of his life. He was graduated from Central High School and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1966. He was a former member of the Holy Assumption Parish and was the owner of Larry's Appliance and Refrigeration. He is survived by his wife, Anita; a son, John (Kim), Superior; a daughter, Lynn (Richard) Grimsrud, Superior; four brothers, Robert, Beaver Dam, Dale, Pembroke Pines, Fla., David, Cameron, and Paul, Barron; three sisters, Judith Miller-Robinson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Vikki Davis, Dallas, Wis., and Audrey Alho, New Ulm, Minn.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son. A service of remembrance is planned for 5 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home with interment in Graceland Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Catherine G. Kitkowski
Catherine G. Kitkowski, 71, of Marinette, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, in Marinette. The former Catherine Owens was born in Superior on Jan. 2, 1928. She was married to Leo B. Kitkowski on May 11, 1946. He died in September 1995. She is survived by four sons, Mike, Waukesha, and Gregg, Dan and Don of Marinette; two daughters, Margie Veriha, Porterfield, and Sue Weisman, Milwaukee; a sister, Irene Johnson, Huntington Beach, Calif.; and13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The funeral service will be held at Thielen Funeral Home in Marinette at 6 p.m. Wednesday with entombment in Forest Home Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-6 p.m. Wednesday.

Max Allen Kellenburger
Max Allen Kellenburger, 75, Superior, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Aug. 17,1923, in Gary, Ind., to Sam and Mildred (Boynton) Kellenburger. He served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. On Jan. 20, 1964, he was married to Mary Jane Sauve in Sisseton, S.D. He was employed as a cook on the Great Lakes from 1963 until his retirement in 1987. He moved to Superior from Duluth in August 1969. He was a charter member of Bathes Memorial VFW Post No. 8329 and was a member of the Barnes AARP, the Richard I. Bong Post No. 435 in Superior and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge No. 2596. He was past president of the Superior Eagles. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane, Superior; a daughter, Shar Benoit; two grandchildren, Stacey and Shaan Gibson, and two great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Lance Gibson, all of Duluth; and his mother, Mildred Kellenburger, Superior. He was preceded in death by a son, Francis Benoit, in 1967, and by his father. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at the Barnes VFW Hall with the Rev. Joseph Brygger, pastor of Barnes Community Church, officiating. Interment icon will be at a later date in Nemadji Cemetery. Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs is handling the arrangements.

Walter Leonard Drinkwine Jr.
Walter Leonard Drinkwine Jr. of Barnes died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital. He was born May 16, 1922, in Superior, to Walter Sr. and Fedilis (Rehl) Drinkwine. He worked as a machinist in Superior and Ashland for the Great Northern and Soo Line railroads, retiring in 1983. He had been a summer resident of Barnes since 1946 and became a resident there in 1960. He served with the Army in Africa and Europe during World War II. He received three Bronze Stars, two Overseas Service Stripes and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Banes Lions Club, the Eau Claire Lakes Conservation Club and a lifetime member of the Barnes Memorial VFW Post No. 8329. Survivors include his wife, Doris (Dodd) Drinkwine, Barnes; two sons, Jack (Susan) Drinkwine, Crandon, and Daniel Drinkwine, Superior; three grandchildren, Kate, Adam and Angela; two brothers, Andre Drinkwine, Superior, and Tom Drinkwine, Barnes; and two sisters, Mary Jane Hawkinson, Grand Rapids, Minn., and Audrey Flagstad, Superior. He was preceded in death by his parents. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Barnes Memorial Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by Barnes Memorial VFW Post No. 8329. Jane Lee McPherson, 43, Superior, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at her residence. Jane was a lifelong resident of Superior. She was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a bachelor of science degree in social work. At the time of her death she was employed in the Rehabilitation Unit of the Miller-Dwan Medical Center in Duluth as a licensed practical nurse. Jane is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Eibon; her mother, Esther McPherson; one granddaughter, Aili Rose; two sisters, Ann (Thomas) Borich of Superior and Mary (Alan) Yoshimoto of Waipahu, Haw.; two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her father, William McPherson, in 1982. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home with the Rev. Laurence Goebel officiating. Private inurnment will take place at the Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will occur from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Should friends desire, the family prefers memorials to the Jane McPherson Memorial Scholarship for nursing students in care of Ann and Tom Borich.

Marian Belonga
Marian Belonga, 90, formerly of 1100 Weeks Ave., Superior, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at the St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born Jan. 30, 1909, in Superior and was a lifelong resident. She had worked as a clerk for the former Grant's Cake Shop, the former Berthiaume's Store and Northwest Outlet. She was a member of the former Hammond Avenue Presbyterian Church and was a deacon there. She also was a volunteer at the Superior Memorial Hospital and she was a member of the Lady Elks. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; a sister, Ella Hawley, and six brothers, Clarence, Abner, Robert, Noble, Willard and Frankie Baker. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at the United Presbyterian Church with the pastor, Rev. Henry Hanna, officiating. Interment icon will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, at the church. Pallbearers will be Daniel VanPuymbrouck Sr., David, Douglas, Dennis and Daniel VanPuymbrouck and Jay Becker. Elvie F. Lehtimaki
Elvie F. Lehtimaki, 85, Maple, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hawthorne. She was born April 2, 1914, in Maple and was a lifelong Maple area resident. She and her husband Eino "Buster" previously owned and operated Buster's Cafe. She was also employed at the Maple Co-op Store. She was a former longtime member of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Maple. She is survived by one daughter, Joyce (Richard) Luedke, Wausau; one son, Ronald (Cheryl) Maki, Billings, Mont.; five grandchildren, Tara (Justine) Howland, Maple; Natalie (Kim) Lechner and Aaron Maki, Billings; Mary Luedke, Madison, and Ernest (Michelle) Luedke, Green Bay, and one great-granddaughter, Autumn Howland, Maple. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eino "Buster" Lehtimaki; one son, Russell 'Rusty' Lehtimaki, and her parents, Konsta and Mary Makela. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Holmes, pastor of the Darrow Road Wesleyan Church, officiating. Eleanor K. Olson
Eleanor K. Olson, 83, Duluth, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at the Benedictine Health Care Center, Duluth. She was born March 18, 1916, in Peoria, Ill., and was previously a longtime Poplar and Iron River resident. She retired from Merrill Lynch in Duluth after many years of service. She was a member of the Benedictine Auxiliary and was a volunteer at its health care center while residing there. She is survived by a brother, Richard (Avenelle) Klepfer, Sugarland, Texas; four grandchildren, Dianne (Michael) Saur, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Donna (Jeff) Liebaert and Daniel (Donna) Olson, both of Superior, and Debbie (Randy) Sharbonno, Prior Lake, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie, in 1980. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the Benedictine Health Care Center, 935 Kenwood Ave., Duluth. The celebrant will be Fr. Bernard Brennan. A graveside service in planned for 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Poplar Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 to 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the health care center. Lena Ida Wonser
Lena Ida Wonser, 96, Eau Claire, a former longtime resident of the Patzau area, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born Feb. 10, 1903, in Hoskins, Neb., to Elizabeth (Pheil) and George Erb. She entered the work force at a young age and her last position prior to retirement was as a cook at the Patzau School. She was married in October of 1921 to Herbert C. Wonser at Baudette, Minn. She was very active at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Superior. She had resided at Eau Claire since October, 1993. She is survived by a sister, Ida Pearson, Eau Claire, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herbert, on June 13, 1982, and by three brothers and five sisters. The funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Downs Funeral Home with Rev. Richard A. Peterson officiating. Interment icon will be in the Summit Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Henry Penney, Merwin and Larry Pearson, Herbert Day, Ronald Nindorf and Chester Petzold. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Carole (Collins) Mikloczak
Carole (Collins) Mikloczak, 61, Superior, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in Superior. She was born Aug. 6, 1937, in Superior and was a longtime Superior resident. She was previously employed at the former Kitch's Restaurant. She is survived by two sons, Mike (Biz) Magdzas and Dan Magdzas, both of Lake Nebagamon; one daughter, Renee DeMoure, South Range; three brothers, Patrick (Donna) Collins, Minneapolis, Minn., and James (Dorothy) Collins and Dennis (Caroline) Collins, both of Kenosha; five sisters, Janice (Jim) Rink, Kathe (Ken) Reed and Sherry (Joe) Mackiewicz, all of Superior; Sandy (Doug) Burnham, Minneapolis, and Patricia Collins, Texas; eight grandchildren, Rebecca, Ryan, Bradley, Jason and Cassie Magdzas, all of Lake Nebagamon; Amy Webster, Mississippi, and Kevin and Nichole DeMoure, Hawthorne, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Mikloczak, and her parents, Edward and Rose Collins. A memorial service is planned for 12 noon on Monday at the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home with the Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci of the Cathedral of Christ the King officiating. Steven Rodney Green
Steven Rodney Green, 37, of Esko, Minn., died suddenly Friday, May 21, 1999. He was born Aug. 25, 1961, in Duluth, the son of Rodney and Jeanette (Hammitt) Green. He went to high school in Hopkins and Cloquet. Steve joined the Marines in 1979 and was stationed on Parris Island, S.C., until he was discharged in 1982. After leaving the Marines, he worked as a chef at numerous restaurants in Minneapolis such as Winfield Potter's, Pronto's, Coco Lezzone and Sherman's Bakery. He later worked for various abatement companies in Minnesota, Iowa and Nevada. He most recently worked at Chemstar in Carlton. Steve loved the outdoors and was a hunter, fisherman and avid motorcyclist. He rebuilt his Harley Davidson motorcycle and enjoyed riding it everywhere. He also had a talent for working with glass and created many beautiful and intricate pieces of glass art. He was an excellent chef and enjoyed cooking for his friends and family whenever he had the opportunity. He is survived by his father, Rodney, Esko; his mother, Jeanette Green, Minneapolis; a sister, Valerie Green, St. Paul; his grandmother, Hilma Hammitt, Wrenshall; his special friend Stacy Ross, Superior, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Harold F. 'Harry' Peck
Harold F. 'Harry' Peck, 74, 1312 N. 23rd St., Superior, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at his home. He was born Oct. 16, 1924, in New York, N.Y., and was graduated from high school there. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had resided in the Superior area for the past 50 years. He was a longtime employee of the Superior Police Dept., retiring as an inspector in 1985. He was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Nemadji Men's Golf Club, a former member of the Superior Men's Bowling Association, a retired member of the Wisconsin Professional Policemen's Association and he was an avid outdoorsman. He is survived by two daughters, Margaret 'Margo' (Thomas) Waletzko, Superior, and Kathleen (Eric) Erickson, Lake Nebagamon; a sister, Anne Peterson, Hilton Head, S.C.; a brother, Alexander Peck, Miami, Fla.; five grandchildren, Dennis and Chris Orr, Andrew Waletzko and Sara Waletzko, all of Superior, and Anne Marie Waletzko, Maple; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Orr, Superior, and Kelsey Burnham, Maple, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou, in 1990; his parents, Sidney and Elizabeth Peck; a brother, Joseph, and by a sister, Mary. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the Cathedral of Christ the King with Fr. Dan Dahlberg the celebrant. Warren Hildebrandt
Warren Hildebrandt, 74, of 7918 So. County Trunk A, Superior, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Warren was born in Superior on Nov. 21, 1924, to Charles and Edith (Hempstead) Hildebrandt. He had served with the Merchant Marines during World War II and had worked for a number of years for the Northern Pacific Railroad. Warren was self-employed for many years and had owned and operated Hilde's Landscaping. He had resided in the Amnicon Lake area since the early 1960's. Warren is survived by his special friend, Myra Leadstrom; a sister, Ruth Olson; a niece, Donna McClellan and nephews Dennis, Gerrold and Jay OIson, all of Superior. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles, in 1976, and by his mother, Edith, in 1978. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1.30 p.m. in the Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home with the Rev. Waldo S. Johnson officiating. Interment icon will be in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from noon until the 1:30 p.m. service. Mary Jo White
Mary Jo White, 62, Barnes, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth, following a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born April 21, 1937, in Superior and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Barnes and the Wisconsin Bowlers Association and enjoyed various sports and cooking. She is survived by her husband, Jack; a daughter, Julie Lukas, Hudson; two stepsons, Kenneth White, Anoka, Minn., and James White, Superior; a stepdaughter, Laurie (Paul) Tousignant, Superior; six step-grandchildren, a brother, George Anderson, Maple; a sister, Madeline Bruhn, Superior, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Graves, in 1997, and by a sister, Sharon Romashko. The funeral service will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci of Cathedral of Christ the King officiating. Interment icon will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Russell E. Mittlestadt
Russell E. Mittlestadt, 60, Superior, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born June 1, 1938, in Knapp, Wis., and was a longtime Superior resident. He was a member of the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind and was employed as a custodian at the Royalton Manor for many years before his retirement in 1989. He is survived by one sister, Ethel E. Cich, Superior; two brothers, Robert E. Mittlestadt, Cloquet, Minn., and Wilfred C. Mittlestadt, Dyersburg, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Olive Mittlestadt. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Friday, at the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. H. Duane Aslyn, pastor of the Itasca Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment icon will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. E. Verna Sands
E. Verna Sands, 102, formerly of Superior, died Friday, May 14, 1999, at the Heritage Nursing Home in Broken Bow, Neb. Verna was born near Broken Bow and moved to Dedham with her family when she was 15. She resided in the area for 10 years. She lived and worked in Amery, Pine City and Minneapolis, Minn.; Oakland, Calif., and Meridian, Idaho, and then moved back to Broken Bow. She is survived by one brother, Gerald Sands, Denver, Colo.; nieces Gem Peltzer of Superior, Donna Sims of Pueblo, Colo., and Joyce Donegan of Florida, nephews Clyde Southwick of South Range, Eugene Sands of Pueblo and Charles Southwick of Superior, and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben Butler and Eva Sands; two brothers, Charles and Frank; one sister, Belle Southwick, and three nephews, Lloyd and Guy Southwick and Ronny Sands. Funeral services were held May 18 at the Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with Dr. Charles Gregory officiating. Interment icon was in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Carl D. Larson
Carl D. Larson, 92, 1122 N. 21st St., Superior, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center of complications following a stroke. He was born May 11, 1907, in Superior and was a lifelong area resident. He was descended from a family of early Swedish settlers which arrived in Superior in 1854. Carl enjoyed golfing, having coffee with friends, gardening and carpentry. He was a member of the East End Senior Citizens smear group. He retired from the Superior Water, Light and Power Co. in 1972 with over 30 years of service. He was a member of the 25-Year Club at SWLP, the Acacia Lodge No. 329 F&AM and the Order of the Eastern Star. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Signe; two daughters, Marie Larson, Iron River, and Carol Reasbeck, Superior; two grandsons, Joe and Jeff Reasbeck, both of Huntington Beach, Calif.; sister-in-laws Ruth Haagensen of Corcoran, Minn., and Loretta Larson, Superior; a brother-in-law, Warren Raaflaub, Superior; two nephews, Peter Raaflaub, Superior, and Vernon Larson, Las Vegas, Nev.; five nieces, Barbara Stecher, Davidsonville, Md.; Susan Johnson, Las Vegas; Marcia Erickson, Duluth; Arlene Stecher, Corcoran, and Nancy Horyza, Stacy, Minn.; and a special 'daughter,' Carol Evens, Superior. He was preceded in death by his parents, Augusta and Charles Larson; a son, Carl D. Larson Jr.; a daughter, Bonita Diane Larson; a brother, George; a sister, Hazel, and a grandson. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, at the Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Joan Goebel officiating. Interment icon will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Wesley Edward 'Wes' Neu
Wesley Edward 'Wes' Neu, 86, Maple Grove, Minn., formerly of Stone Lake, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Anoka, Minn. Wes was born July 31, 1912, at Phillips, the son of William and Emilie (Schoenborn) Neu. He grew up and attended school in Phillips. He was married to Carol LaFramboise on April 12, 1941, in Cornell. They resided in Milwaukee until purchasing the Mountain Cheese Factory in Mountain, Wis., which they operated until 1950. They moved to Stone Lake where they owned and operated the Stone Lake Dairy until retiring in 1968. They continued to be very active in the community. For the past seven years he had lived in Maple Grove with his daughter Karen. Wes was instrumental in the formation of the Stone Lake Fire Dept. and was fire chief for several years. He was a charter and life member of the Stone Lake Lions Club and was an avid hunter, fisherman and bowler. He is survived by two daughters, Ginny (Ed) Simons, Hayward, and Karen (Rod) Coddington, Maple Grove; three grandchildren; two brothers, William and Daniel (Rose) Neu, both of Phillips; six sisters, Elsie (Arnold) Klitz, Crystal Lake, Ill.; Dorothy Oesterreich, Milwaukee, and Emily Stone, Florence Teeters, Mabel (Charles) Dernbach and Ethel Teeters, all of Phillips, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Alfred, Clarence and Lester, and one sister, Mildred Beaumont. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home in Hayward. Rev. David Perkins will officiate. Interment icon will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Stone Lake. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Kathleene C. Meyer
Kathleene C. Meyer, 49, Jackpine Drive, Cloverland, formerly of Richmond, Ill., died Thursday, May 27, 1999, in her home. She was born June 12, 1949, in Woodstock, Ill. She was married to her husband, Ray, on Aug. 24, 1968, in Richmond and they recently celebrated 30 years of marriage. She was a homemaker and owned and operated American Marine in Superior with her husband and their family. In addition to her husband, Ray, she is survived by two sons, Joe Meyer, Burlington, Wis., and John Meyer, Cloverland; her parents, Francis and Elizabeth Regnier, Twin Lakes, Wis.; four brothers, Don (Sue) Regnier, Spring Grove, Ill.; Ric (Julie) Regnier, Wilmont, Wis.; Bill (Lisa) Regnier, Genoa City, Wis., and Rob (Karen) Regnier, Elkhorn, Wis., and three sisters, Barb (Joe) Freemont, Zenda, Wis.; Marianne (Al) Peterson, Augusta, Wis., and JoAnn (Randy) Coleman, Genoa City. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Anne Kathleene Meyer. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Keller, pastor of the Cloverland Covenant Church, officiating. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Maurice R. Gray
Maurice R. Gray, 77, New York Avenue, Superior, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at the St. Francis Home in the Park. He was born March 3, 1922, in Superior and was graduated from the Christian Brothers High School in Duluth. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Superior and he was the coordinator of the Rehabilitation Medicine Service at the Veterans Administration West Side Medical Center, Chicago, Ill., before retiring. He had resided in Riverside, Ill., since 1953 until returning to Superior in 1998. While residing in Riverside he attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside. In Superior, he was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Gray, Superior; a sister, Mary Gray, Superior; an uncle, an aunt and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mollie Gray. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the St. Francis Church with Fr. Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant. Interment icon will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m., Friday, at the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home where Fr. Irving Meyett will officiate at a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Pallbearers will be Denis, Corey and Fred Hennessy, Fran Stodola, Cyril Gray and Jim Gray. Patricia I. Morrin
Patricia I. Morrin, 87, of 8 S. 7th St., Bayfield, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, her birthday, at the Northern Lights Manor in Washburn. She was born on May 26, 1912, in Currie, Minn., the daughter of James and Hazel (Ferrand) Gorman. The family moved to the Town of Russell in 1923. Pat was a 1930 graduate of Bayfield High School and subsequently attended the Ashland County Normal School at Ashland. She was a county school teacher in the Sanborn and Town of Russell areas. She was subsequently employed at Meyer Drug Store as a bookkeeper for many years. She was very active in the Holy Family Church/School community throughout her entire life. She was acknowledged for this effort by being recommended for the Pax Christie Medal which is awarded annually by the Diocese of Superior. She was actively involved and maintained a close association with members of the Sunnyside Club. On July 31, 1937, she was married to Henry 'Scottie' Morrin at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Bayfield. She is survived by a son, James (Patricia) Morrin, Washburn; two daughters, Patricia (Martin) Peterson, Bayfield, and Kathleen (Eugene L.) Pastoret, South Range; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Scottie, on Nov. 1, 1985, and by two brothers, Rev. William Gorman and Richard Gorman. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Bayfield with Fr. Glenn Phillips as celebrant. Interment icon will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Bayfield. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, at the Schafer-Mountain Funeral Home, Bayfield Chapel, where there will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Holy Family Catholic Church Restoration Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Sylvia Wiitala
Sylvia Wiitala, 92, Hawthorne, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dec. 3, 1906, in Brule, and was a lifelong area resident. She had previously owned and operated a farm in Brule with her husband, Jacob, but more recently she was employed as a housekeeper and cook for Caroline and Julia Marshall in Duluth. She was a former member of the Waino Pioneer Chapel. She is survived by two daughters, Ruth (Leonard) Lindelof, Minneapolis, Minn., and Arlene Makela, Maple; two sisters, Jennie Johnson, Hawthorne, and Edna Abrahamson, Duluth; six grandchildren, Susan Linman, Jackye Armstrong, Amy Rantala, Judy Ryder, Lauren Leith and Curtis Lindelof; 14 great-grandchildren, Brett Lindelof, Karmyn and Nicole Tuma, Scott and Michael Rantala, Andrew and Stefanie Armstrong, Jessica, Kelsey and Clayton Leith, Christopher, Sarah and Amanda Ryder and Samantha and Allison Linman, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob; her parents, Oscar and Mary Maki; a granddaughter, Carol Lindelof; a great-grandson, Danny Rantala; three sisters, Lillian Johnson, Mary Johnson and Esther Johnson; and two brothers, John and Woodrow Maki. The funeral service will be at noon on Tuesday at the Hope Lutheran Church in Oulu with the Rev. Gloria Friedrich, pastor, officiating. Interment icon will be in the Waino Ever Rest Cemetery. Ralph M. Hendrickson
Ralph M. Hendrickson, 75, of Lake Nebagamon, died Saturday, May 29, 1999 in his residence. He was born on May 9, 1924, to Henry and Ruth Hendrickson in Wentworth. He had graduated from Superior Central High School. He farmed for many years in Wentworth before going to work for Twin Ports Creamery, where he had worked until his retirement. He resided in South Range before moving to Lake Nebagamon 12 years ago. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Nebagamon. He married Irene Schold on March 5, 1957, in Superior. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl, and two grandsons, Sean and Devin. He is survived by his wife, Irene; sons Scott (Robin) of Superior and Ronald (Sue) of South Range; a step-daughter, Jo Dell (Alan) Carlson of Lake Nebagamon; a brother, Les Hendrickson of Nekoosa, Wis.; a sister, Fran Brooks of Portland, Ore; and several grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday at Poplar Cemetery. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. Peter John Pease Sr., Peter John Pease Sr., 65, of Barnes, died Friday, May 28, 1999 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born March 29, 1934 at Barnes, the son of Lucius and Elizabeth (Peterson) DeWitt. He was reared in Barnes, graduated from high school in Drummond and served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964. He was united in marriage to Deb Dybvik on May 18, 1985, in Barnes. He was a Bayfield County Deputy Sheriff for 11 years, and was past town chairman and constable for the town of Barnes. He was also employed with Jim Bucheger Logging until his retirement in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Deb; two sons, Peter Jr., Fort Bragg, N.C., and Paul, Buckley Air Base, Colo.; his daughter, Peggy (Mac) McCaughn, Des Plaines, Ill.; his stepson, Greg Pappas, Dallas, Texas; step-daughter Cynthia (Jack) Mulek, Duluth, MN; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step-great grandson; three brothers, David (Carol) and Walter (Patricia), both of Barnes, and Herbert (Arlene), Newport, Wash.; and nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Barnes Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Brygger will officiate. Fred Hjalmar Knuuttila
Fred Hjalmar Knuuttila, 89, Hawthorne, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, in the Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long fight against melanoma cancer. Born Aug. 14, 1909, in Oulu, he had resided in the area most of his life. He loved the outdoors and nature and did woodworking for a living for many years before his retirement in 1975. Following his retirement, he moved to the Columbia Manor Senior Citizen Apartments in Iron River. He is survived by one brother, William, Duluth; one sister, Agnes Lindelof, Iron River; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hilda KnuuttiIa; two sisters, Helen and Alice Burkhart; two brothers, Elmer and Edward; and an infant brother and sister. Visitation begins at noon Thursday and continues until the 1 p.m. funeral at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Brygger, officiating. Interment icon will be in the Pine Glade Cemetery, Oulu. Pallbearers will be Curt and Luke Knuuttila, Terry, Randy and Russell Burkhart and Roger Lindelof.

Edward A. Weston
Edward A. Weston, 89, Superior, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, in the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hawthorne. Born Oct. 23, 1909 in Superior, he was a lifelong city resident. He was employed by the Burlington Northern and former Great Northern Railroads. He had also been employed by the King Midas Flour Mill and the Fraser Shipyards. He was a member of the Maintenance and Railway Engineers and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman, loved baseball and enjoyed gardening. He married Regina Mankoski on May 14, 1938, at the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Superior and they recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Regina; one daughter, Barbara (Richard) Keup, Superior; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Clarke, Superior, Lou Jorgenson, St. Paul, and Marie Hayes, Solon Springs; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Miner, and his parents, Martha and Joseph Weston. Visitation begins at noon on Wednesday and continues until the 1 p.m. Mass of Christian burial in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. James Tobolski, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Todd Sampson, Tom and Jimmy Milchesky, Lawrence Nordlund, Bradley Keup and Sean Noland. Joseph C. Semborski
Joseph C. Semborski, 76, of 2332 Maryland Ave., died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born Nov. 13, 1922, in Superior, and was a lifelong city resident. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He retired in 1983 from Murphy Oil, where he had worked for over 30 years. He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King and a former member of its Parish Council. He was also a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers and was an avid sportsman. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy 'Dottie'; two sons, Steven and William, both of Superior; two daughters, Patricia (Paul) Stariha, Superior, and Joan Semborski, Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Michael, Adam and Annie Stariha; and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Mary Semborski; four brothers, John, Edward, Charles and Anthony; and two sisters, Wlady and Gertrude. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cathedral of Christ the King with the Rev. Dan Dahlberg as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home with wake prayers at 7:30 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Mike, Jim and Stanley Semborski, Jim Anderson, Tom Brost and Ken Carlson. Honorary pallbearers will be Patrick Conway, Steffanie Murray, Jim Murray, Helen Semborski and Ingrid Semborski.

William E. 'Bill' Asbury
William E. 'Bill' Asbury, 86, of 5453 E. Wilkinson Road, town of Oakland, died Friday, May 28, 1999 in Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Oct. 10, 1912 in Bruno, Minn., he was a longtime East End Superior and town of Oakland resident. He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. He started employment with the city of Superior as a master mechanic on Nov. 12, 1941, and retired as superintendent of equipment on July 10, 1968. He is survived by his wife, Marjory; a daughter, Patricia (Leonard) Peterson, of Gordon; one son, Wayne (Patricia) Asbury, town of Oakland; a brother, Daniel (Betty) Asbury, Superior; one sister, Anna (Melvin 'Pete') Plaisted, Superior; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Emma, a brother, John, a great-grandchild, Nicholas Ball. The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. David Eckman of Pilgrim Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Interment icon will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hawthorne. Pallbearers will be Bill Asbury, James Asbury, Steven Peterson, James Clark, Brad Carlson and Ronald Gunderson.

Avis G. During
Avis G. During, 86, of Superior, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born in Mayville, N.D., on May 27, 1913, to Arthur and Gina Orner. She lived in the Superior area most of her life, graduating from East High School. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and was active in quilting, XYZ Club, the Burlington Northern Veterans Club and with the former Douglas County Homemakers. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her brother, Ray Orner. Survivors include sons Richard, in Seattle, Wash., and William "Bill" (Diane Rent) of Superior; a daughter, Linda Anderson of Superior; sisters Myrtle Dopp and Florence Kinnear, both of Superior; one grandson; and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be David During, Sidney Palm, Frank Pavelec, Bruce Herstad, Joseph Hudacek and Allen Kent. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, where the funeral will be on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Scott Ludford will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
