Avis G. During
Avis G. During, 86, of Superior, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born in Mayville, N.D., on May 27, 1913, to Arthur and Gina Orner. She lived in the Superior area most of her life, graduating from East High School. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and was active in quilting, XYZ Club, the Burlington Northern Veterans Club and with the former Douglas County Homemakers. She was preceded in death by her husband John, and her brother, Ray Orner. Survivors include sons Richard, in Seattle, Wash., and William "Bill" (Diane Kent) of Superior; a daughter, Linda Anderson of Superior; sisters Myrtle Dopp and Florence Kinnear, both of Superior; one grandson; and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be David During, Sidney Palm, Frank Pavelec, Bruce Herstad, Joseph Hudacek and Allen Kent. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, where the funeral will be on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Scott Ludford will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Alice Buran Trice
Alice Buran Trice, 79, Ithaca, N.Y., formerly of Superior, died Saturday, May 20, 1999, in Ithaca. Born and raised in Superior, she graduated from the former Superior Central High School and received her teaching degree after a four-year course at Superior State Teachers College. She met and married professor Harrison Trice in Black River Falls, where her first teaching assignment was located. Prof. Trice, who preceded Alice in death, was an author and a professor for 20 years at Cornell University. Alice taught many years in Ithaca public schools and lived there for 45 years. She was a member of Imaculate Conception Catholic Church and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Anne and Martin Buran, and a sister, Dorothy Schnell. She is survived by a daughter, Catherine Ann Trice; a son, Richard Trice; a grandson, Aron Gabriel Kuehnemann; a sister, Helen Kernan, Duluth; and a host of cousins in Wisconsin. A Mass and memorial service will be held Thursday.

Bill Bach and Mary Bach
A joint memorial service for Bill and Mary Bach will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Solon Springs. The Revs. J. Powers and D. Bergeson will officiate, with inurnment following at Evergreen Cemetery, Solon Springs. Russell H. Cragin, Russell H. Cragin, 77 of 2990 S. Grand Ave., Superior (Oliver), died Monday, May 31, 1999, at Lakehaven Manor Nursing Home, Duluth. He was born Sept. 11, 1921, in Montello, Wis., and was a Superior resident for most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Okinawa. He retired as a detective with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department after over 24 years of service. He was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church and the Moose Lodge of West Duluth; and helped formed the 4-H Club in Oliver. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Cecelia; 10 daughters, Jeanne (Lawrence) Atkinson, Superior, Sharyn (Albin) Hansen, Superior, Jacky (Clarence) Callen, Toivola, Minn., Pam (Daniel) Rude of Oliver, Vicki (Dennis) Merrill, Menasha, Wis., Betty (Kerry) Moceri, Rapid City, S.D., Linda LaJoie, Madison, Shelly (Gary) Erickson, Green Bay, Colleen (Gary) Carr, Oliver, and Jill Bachman, Superior; three sons, Russell (Laura) Cragin, Menomonie, Michael (Renee) Cragin, Carlton, Minn., and Patrick Cragin of Oliver; 37 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Amanda Cragin; two brothers, Kenneth and Bernard; a sister, Beatrice; grandchildren Traci and Greg Hansen and Bob Dalton; and a son-in-law, Larry LaJoie. A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Olson as celebrant. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847. Downs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dennis Dean Olson
Dennis Dean Olson, 50, of 2620 W. 5th St., Duluth, died last week at his residence. Born Nov. 9, 1948, in Superior, he was a lifelong Twin Ports resident. He was a graduate of Superior Senior High School and was self-employed in realty properties and remodeling. He was a Vietnam Army veteran, a member of the 101st Airborne Division and had received a Bronze Star. Survivors include his mother, Cathryn Olson, Superior; three brothers, Kenneth (Margaret) Olson, Chisago City, Minn., Robert (Helen) Olson, Port Charlotte, Fla., and Edwin (Brenda) Olson Jr., Chippewa Falls; a sister, Shirley Nelson, Minneapolis; five nieces; 13 nephews; 18 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Olson, Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Olson Sr.; four brothers, Jack, Bill, Dale and Harry Olson; a nephew, Russell Olson; a great-nephew, Brandon Esberg; and one great-niece, Brenda Esberg. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home in Superior, where visitation will be that day from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Lt. Robert Parker of the Superior Salvation Army will officiate, with interment to be in Veterans Memorial Park at Greenwood Cemetery.

Nola M. Halberg
Nola M. Halberg, 82, Exeland, died on Thursday, May 27, 1999 at her home. She was born Jan. 6, 1917, in Warren, Wis., to Franklin and Elizabeth Bingham. She married AIbert Halberg on May 12, 1934, and they lived on a farm west of Exeland where they raised five children. She worked as a bookkeeper/teller at the Dairyland State Bank in Bruce for 14 years after her children were reared. She loved to crochet and make quilts for her family. Survivors include her five children, Lois (Max) Thompson of Exeland, Linda (Jim) Briggs of Superior, Eric (Pat) Halberg of Warren, Ore., Sonja (David) Starnes of Tracy, Minn., and John (Bonnie) Halberg of New Auburn. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin and Elizabeth Bingham; brothers Frank and LeRoy Bingham; and her husband Albert, who died Nov. 4, 1994. Services were held at United Methodist Church in Exeland on Tuesday with the Rev. Cathy Hamblin officiating. Nash/Jackan Funeral Home in Ladysmith handled arrangements and the Monday visitation. Interment icon was in Windfall Cemetery in Exeland.

Henry 'Hank' Skudstad
Henry 'Hank' Skudstad, 90, 1800 New York Ave., formerly of 25 N. 21st St., died Thursday, June 3, 1999 at St. Francis Home in the Park. He was born in Superior and had been a city resident most of his life. He was a graduate of the former Central High School in Superior and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1929 to 1933 and the Wisconsin State Guard from 1943 to 1946. He owned and operated the former Broadway Market in Superior; was a purchasing agent for the former Great Northern Railroad; was a materials handler for the former Marine Iron & Shipbuilding Co.; was a job manager for the McLean-Astleford Company; was Deputy City Clerk; and owned and operated the Superior Agency. A Realtor since 1950, he received the "Realtor of the Year" award in 1970. Mr. Skudstad served three terms on the Superior City Council from 1949 to 1954; was the city representative to the Board of Education from 1951 to 1954; and served an interim appointment to the Douglas County Board of Supervisors in the early 1960's. He was a member of the Douglas County Republican Party, the Superior/Douglas County Chamber of Commerce and the Superior-Douglas County Development Association, receiving the third annual "Tool Kit Award" in 1980. A lifelong member of Concordia Lutheran Church, he was also a member of the AAD Temple Shrine of Duluth; the Sons of Norway; the Superior Curling Club; the Superior Fraternal Order of Eagles #80; the Superior Masonic Lodge #236; the Superior Moose Lodge #606, the Superior/Douglas County YMCA; and the United Commercial Travelers #333. He was a member of the Superior Elks Lodge #403 for over 50 years, receiving his 50-year pin in 1994 and honored as 'Elk of the Year' in 1996. He was a member of the Superior Shrine Club and was honored as 'Shiner of the Year' in 1994. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva, in November of 1980. He is survived by one son, Donald (Donna) Skudstad, Klamath Falls, Oregon; a brother, Harold (Lillian) Skudstad, Grants Pass, Oregon; a special friend, Helen Ellison, Superior; two grandchildren, John Skudstad, Klamath Falls, and Bonnie (Mark) Holmquist, Twin Falls, Idaho; one great-grandchild, Daniel of Twin Falls; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4-8:30 p.m. Sunday in the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues at 10 a.m. Monday until the 11 a.m. funeral in the Concordia Lutheran Church with the Rev. Scott Ludford, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gary Banker, Bill Benson, Roger and Clarence Erickson, Walter Moe and John O'Neill. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Concordia Lutheran Church or the Riverside Cemetery Association.

Dr. Clarence Malcolm "Scotty" Scott
Dr. Clarence Malcolm "Scotty" Scott, 91, Superior, died Thursday, June 3, 1999, in Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 9, 1908 in Sand Creek, Wis., and graduated from St. Olaf College and the Kirksville College of Osteopathy in Kirksville, Mo. Prior to attending Kirksville College of Osteopathy, he taught science for four years at Bloomer (Wis.) High School. He practiced medicine for many years in Chetek, Bloomer, and Eau Claire. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Toastmasters Club and Grace Lutheran Church while in Eau Claire. While living in Superior, he was an active member of Central Assembly of God. Dr. Scott will be remembered for his Senior Citizen Exercise Videotape frequently shown on Public Access Channel 7. He is survived by his wife, Edna; four sons, C. Malcolm (Eloise), Richard (Rosanne), and Ronald (Julie), all of Superior, and Lance of Eau Claire; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Joanne (Stanley) Johnson, Duluth and James Call of Lexington, Ky.; two step- grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Melvin, Elmer and Carl and a grandson, Mark. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the William-Downs LeSage Funeral Home and Saturday from 9:30-10 a.m. at the church. Rev. Paul Anderson will officiate. Visitation will again be at 2:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Dovre Lutheran Church where another service will be held at 3:30 p.m. with burial in the Dovre Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Cindy and Brad McDonnell, Kristin and John McMurtry, Erik and Paula Scott, Lisa and Paul Buenger, Andrea Scott and Sonia Valdivia. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Duluth Clinic Foundation (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation).

Richard A. 'Rick' Thoreson
Richard A. 'Rick' Thoreson, 53, a resident of the Twin Cities, formerly of Superior, died Friday, June 4, 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents, Timmy and Evelyn, and a daughter, Indrani. Surviving are a son, Scott; a friend, Georgia; three brothers, four sisters, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, 1965 E. County Road E, White Bear Lake, Minn. Interment icon will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Mahtomedi, Minn. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Wulff Family Services, Crestwood Park Mortuary, 1485 White Bear Ave., St. Paul, and on Tuesday in the church for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family.

Dorothy Irene Waseen
Dorothy Irene Waseen, 88, of North 21st Street, Superior, died Friday, June 4, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. She was born June 5, 1910 to George and Bertha (Weniger) Sheskern in St. Paul, Minn. Dorothy resided in Superior most of her lifetime, having attended Cooper School and graduating from Cathedral High School in 1928. She was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church, a Foster Grandparent for the Head Start Program and former violinist for the Post Office Symphony in St. Paul. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Bernice in 1983 and her husband Wallace in 1984. She is survived by her sons, Dan (Pat Thomas) of Winona, Minn., and Robert (Kathy) of Bethany, Ill.; a daughter, Elizabeth (Jose) Mila of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mary (Howard) Havlish of St. Paul; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. Ronald Olson as celebrant. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery Superior. Arrangements are being handled by Downs Funeral Home.

Marvin K. Pede
Marvin K. Pede, 73, of 5019 S. State Highway 35, Superior, died Saturday, June 5, 1999 at his residence. He was born Dec. 26, 1925 in Pembina, N.D., and resided in the Superior area since 1954. Mr. Pede served in the Army during World War II in Africa. He was owner and operator of Town Cab. Prior to that he worked many years as an over-the-road truck driver. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 10490 and American Legion Post No. 418. Surviving are his wife, Lea; three sons, Marvin Tallee of Washington State, Duane (Beverly) Pede, Amherst Junction, Wis., and Steven (Glenda) Pede, Superior; five daughters, Betty Rose Tallee, Washington State, Carol (Art) Moreau, Bloomington, Minn., Janet (Ronald) Geitner, Pueblo West, Colo., Rhonda (Kenneth) Mack, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Lori (Thomas) Dalbec, Superior; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Russell (Betty) Pede, Blaine, Minn., and Francis (Gail) Pede, St. Vincent, Minn. He was preceded in death by parents, Rudolph and Edith (McIntyre) Pede, a son, Ricky Pede, a sister, Darlene Pohl, and two brothers, Charles and Donald Pede. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Downs Funeral Home, where visitation begins at 9 a.m. that day. Rev. Bessie Brown Inscho
Bessie Brown Inscho, 81, of 1800 New York Ave., a longtime resident of Superior, Douglas County, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999. Born in Superior Aug. 17, 1917, to William John and Bessie Brown McGrath, she was second of three daughters and the mother of five children. She worked all of her life as a professional cook of 40 years and a caregiver and friend to all she knew. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; a sister, Clara Jean Androsky; and her husband, Raymond Cyrus Inscho. Surviving are a sister, Arlene McGrath, Superior; her children, Raymond 'Butchie' Inscho and Bonnie Jean Inscho, Superior, Ronald William Inscho, Modesto, Calif., Patrick Allen and Patty Inscho, Santee, Calif., and David Joseph and Karen Inscho, Nashville, Tenn.; nephews Charles Androsky and Bradley Severson of Superior; a niece, Dawn Severson, in Colorado; grandchildren Gillian Inscho, Modesto, Calif., Beth (Inscho) Leggett, Ramsey, Minn., Patrick Inscho Jr., in Kansas, Stephen Inscho, Sparta, Wis., Rachel Inscho, Santee, Calif., and Melissa Inscho, Santee, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren; four great-nephews; and six great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces. Services will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Christ Lutheran Church, 320 N. 28th St., E., Superior. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mrs. Inscho's favorite charity, the Solid Rock Mission in Superior. Bernice Ellen McGrath
Bernice Ellen McGrath, 88, of Superior, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on March 17, 1910, to William and Agnes (Ulvin) O'Brien in Iron River, graduated from Superior Central High School and from St. Mary's School of Nursing Class of 1929. She had also attended Nursing School in Cook County, Chicago, Ill. She had worked as a special duty nurse in Duluth and Superior. She was active in the Superior Figure Skating Club and the Superior Garden Club. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, and was well-known for her rosemaling. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers William R. and Edward O'Brien; husband Paul H., in November 1988; and son, Michael. She is survived by a son, Patrick B. (Penny) of Superior; a daughter, Maureen T. (Francis) Golden from Camarillo, Calif.; a brother, James J. O'Brien of Superior; a sister, Laurel (Donald) Colder from Tujunga, Calif.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a special friend, the Rev. Father Gerald Wilger. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial Mass in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Tabolski officiating. Burial of cremains will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Martha Brown
Martha Brown, 75, a lifelong Poplar area resident, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in her home. Born Aug. 8, 1923, in Oulu, she graduated from the former Waino High School and married Paul Brown on Sept. 8, 1945, in Oulu. She was previously employed by the former Brule Cooperative and the former Workers Mutual Savings Bank. Also a homemaker, she was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Poplar. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Paul of Poplar; a son, Dan (Karmyn) Brown, Superior; one granddaughter, Kristine Brown Strysik, Huntley, Ill.; a grandson, Todd Brown, Superior; and two brothers, Harvey Salo of Middle River and Everet (Mary) Salo, Winona, Minn. She was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Gronseth, and three brothers, Arthur, Harold and Herbert Salo. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Friday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Visitation resumes Saturday in Peace Lutheran Church, Poplar, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral. The Rev. Lawrence Day will officiate. Carol Eleanor (Leaf) Pfeffer, 72, of Proco Court, Duluth, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999 in Duluth. She was born and raised in New Duluth. She was a member of House of Hope Church and was a current member of the Fond du Lac Community Church. Mrs. Pfeffer was preceded in death by her parents, Manny and Eleanor Leaf, a brother, Vernon Leaf, husband, William, and a grandson Aric. She is survived by her brother, Ronald (Karla) Leaf of Minneapolis; her children, Darrel (Susan), Doug, Karyn (Tim), Jerry (Annie), Rodney (Wendy), Dean (April), Cindy (Murray) of Grand Forks, Scott (Janelle), Tammy (Dave), Todd (Dawn), Denise (John), numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and special friend, Nancy Scanlon. Visitation will be from noon until the 1 p.m. services Saturday in Fond du Lac Community Church, Rev Jim Woldhuis officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Forest Hill Cemetery, Duluth. Ethel S. Cadotte, 79, Superior, died Thursday, June 10, 1999 in Superior. Born Oct. 21, 1919 in Superior, she was a lifelong resident. She was a graduate of the former East High School. She is survived by one son, Michael (Janet) Cadotte, Aurora, Ill.; two sisters, Betty (Steve) Gondik, Superior, and Virginia (Raymond) Doucette, Superior; three grandchildren, Troy Cadotte, Mishawaka, Ind., Dayna Cadotte, Superior and Lisa Cadotte, Chicago, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Kayli Cadotte, Mishawaka, and Aaron and Anthony Sardilli, both of Chicago. Mrs. Cadotte was preceded in death by her husband, Duane H. Cadotte in 1985 and a brother, Bud Card. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home and continues Monday from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral in the funeral home with the Rev. H. Sandra Lee Leland
Sandra Lee Leland, 63, of 610 E. 2nd St., died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at her home in Superior. Born June 17, 1935, in Superior, she grew up in Gordon and graduated from Northwood High School in Minong. She attended St. Olaf College and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a degree in elementary education. She had been employed as a Head Start teacher in the Superior School District. She also previously owned and operated her own business. She was an active member of Concordia Lutheran Church, serving on its Altar Guild and Church Council. She was also actively involved in Chapter E of the PEO Sisterhood, serving on local and state levels PEO. She enjoyed crafting stained glass pieces, reading, cooking and spending time at her cabin. She and Ken Leland were married on May 27, 1954, and recently celebrated 45 years of marriage. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Susan (Ron) Seningen, Eau Claire; a son, Kenneth "Chip" (Bonnie) Leland, Superior; a daughter, Sandra "Bunny" (Neal) O'Shaughnessy, Superior; a brother, David (Karin) Benson of Gordon; eight grandchildren, Justin and Cassandra Seningen, Eric, Jonathan and Hannah Leland, and Abigail, Matthew and Aaron O'Shaughnessy; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Ruby Benson. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Visitation continues Tuesday in Concordia Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service with the Rev. Scott Ludford officiating. There will be a family burial at the Gordon Cemetery. Lena Nordswen
Lena Nordswen, 88, of 3712 Tower Ave., died Friday, June 11, 1999, at Southdale Health Care Services Inc. She was born Dec. 12, 1910, in Ashtabula, Ohio, and resided in Superior for most of her life. She was employed as a waitress by the former Arrow Cafe and also worked at Jeno's for many years. She enjoyed music, playing the piano and walking outdoors. Surviving are three daughters, Carol Nordswen, Superior, Vicki (Glenn) Tridgell, Duluth, and Nancy (Ray) Hossalla, Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many brothers and sisters in Ashtabula. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, in 1996. A private service will take place at a later date. Downs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Hiltunen
Helen Hiltunen, 86, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at the hospice unit of St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth following a brief illness. She had been a resident of Royalton Manor in Superior. Her parents immigrated to Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Canada, an area then populated largely by Indians and the newly arriving Finns. Helen's birth on March 11, 1913, was the first of a white child to be born in the area. After attending school, she and her family moved to the United States when she was 14, living in New York City until moving to Superior in March of 1953. She married Victor Hiltunen while living in New York City on July 14, 1934. She enjoyed fishing and berry picking and was well-known for her blueberry-raspberry jam from the berries she picked herself. She worked at the Saratoga Cafe for many years. Shortly after it closed she went to work for Jeno's in Duluth until her retirement in 1978. She was an active member of the Finnish-American Society, the Douglas County Democratic Party and Mesaba Range Co-op Park Association. Until recently she was also active in the Superior Senior Center. Her husband of 56 years, Victor, preceded her in death, as did two brothers, Leo and Ted Narvenen, and a sister, Lina Moan, all of Canada. She is survived by two daughters, Elaine (David) Stentz of Little Rock, Ark., and Audrey (Philip) Hayward of Superior; a half sister, Sirkka Nissinen of Finland; five grandchildren, Christine (Mark) Prieve, Indianapolis, Ind., James Minobe, Chicago, Ill., Randy (Unkeong) Minobe, Dahlonga, Ga., Carolyn (Mark) Turkowski, Superior, and Bradley Berg, Minneapolis; six great-grandchildren, KeIly, Sarah, Jacob, Victor, Kyle and Daniel; and many nieces and nephews. No funeral will be held. Interment icon will be at a later date at the Vermillion Lake Township Cemetery in Minnesota. Memorials may be sent to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are being handled by William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home.

Lawrence Witten Phinney
Lawrence Witten Phinney, 84, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at his daughter's home in the town of Solon Springs. He was born April 4, 1915, in Superior, to Bernard and Franc (Lawrence) Phinney. He had worked as an electrical engineer in the manufacture of transformers. He had been a summer resident on Long Lake in Solon Springs since 1991, and had been a full-time resident since 1997. Survivors include a son, Lewis (Bonnie) Phinney, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Karen (Robert "Skip") Larson, Solon Springs; four grandchildren, Erin and Sandi Phinney, Heather Thompson and Nathan Larson; and a brother, Bernard Phinney, Los Angeles, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile, in 1971, and by a sister, Susan Phinney, in 1988. A memorial service will he held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Northwoods Community Church in Solon Springs, with the Rev. Milton Holmquist officiating. Interment icon will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Royalton, Minn. Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs is handling arrangements.

Lloyd E. Williams
Lloyd E. Williams, 57, Superior, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, following a lengthy illness. Born May 17, 1942, in Green Ridge, Mo., he was a longtime Superior resident. He was employed as a maintenance mechanic by the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #80. He served his country in the United States Air Force and attained the rank of sergeant. He is survived by his former wife of 29 years, Karen Williams, with whom he had three sons, Terry Williams and Ryan (Heather) Williams, both of Superior, and Quinn Williams, Duluth; his parents, Gordon and Hazel Williams, Windsor, Mo.; two grandchiIdren, Alisa and Nolan Williams, both of Superior; one sister, Mary (Kenneth) Brown, Odessa, Mo.; one niece, one nephew and a special friend, Shar Troost, Superior. Visitation will be from Saturday from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. memorial service in Pilgrim Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Eckman, officiating. Inurnment will take place in Knob Noster, Mo. Arrangements are by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

Mary Bergson
Mary Bergson, 95, of 627 Fisher Ave., Superior, died Saturday, June 19, 1999, at her residence. She was born Nov. 11, 1903, at Duluth. She had been a long time Duluth resident, moving to Superior in 1995. She retired as a housekeeper for the Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth after many years of service. She is survived by one son, Ronald Bergson of Superior; three granddaughters, Rhonda (Bergson) Willis, (Greg), Superior, Mary (Patty) Conn, Wichita, Kan., and Nyla Lewis, Wichita; great grandchildren Christina Lane, Jason Lane, Justin Lane, Patricia Conn, Tasha Lewis and Tiffany Lewis; one great-great grandchild, Quevel Aiken, Superior; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Downs Funeral Home after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Private graveside services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the family lot at Forest Hill Cemetery, Duluth.

Edna Bien
Edna Bien, 83, a resident of 1800 New York Ave., died on Wednesday, June 16, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. She was born in Lake Nebagamon on March 9, 1916, and was a graduate of Lake Nebagamon High School. She had been a longtime resident of Superior, where she was a member of the Central Assemby of God Church and a foster grandparent at the Cooper School in later years, Survivors include daughters JoAnne (Jack) Sullivan of Magalia, Calif., and Jana Janssen of Barnes, Wis.; sons Frank (Brenda) Bien in Las Vegas, Nev., and Curtis (Tracy) Bien of Huntington Beach, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Central Assembly of God Church. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Bruce Kunsman
Bruce Kunsman, 84, of Fairfield Bay, Ark., died Monday, May 27, 1999. He was born on May 23, 1915, in Kelly Lake, Minn. He attended schools and began his railroad career in Superior. He married Roberta Rood in 1935. He had four children. A 26-year resident of Fairfield Bay, Bruce retired from the Burlington Northern Railway in 1969, after serving the railroad in several capacities. His most lasting accomplishment before retirement was the setting up of the first school for the training of locomotion firemen and engineers. This school was established in St. Paul, Minn., and continues to this day. After retirement, Bruce and his wife moved to Fairfield Bay. They were charter members of the First Presbyterian Church, where they were active. Bruce was also active in the Fairfield Bay Shrine Club. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at the Bay in 1995. Four years ago Bruce and Roberta, moved to Conway, Ark., due to health reasons and the access to a dialysis facility. He is survived by his wife, Roberta, of Fairfield Bay; four children, Dr. Roberta Chapman-Wallace, Mark H. Kunsman, Bruce D. Kunsman and Claudia Reed and nine grandchildren. Roberta and Mark will be accompanying their mother to the Superior area where Bruce's ashes will be scattered over the railroad tracks he so loved.\

Marie Elizabeth Nogle
Marie Elizabeth Nogle, a resident of Solon Springs, died Monday, June 21, 1999, at her home. She was born in Abbotsford, Wis., to Robert and Barbara (Metz) Heida. She graduated from high school in Mondovi and from beauty school in Eau Claire. For many years she operated a beauty salon in Mondovi. In 1972 she retired and moved with her husband to Solon Springs. Survivors include her husband, George; a son, Lane (Chris) Nogle, Solon Springs; a sister, Audrey (Robert) Burdekin, Fairfield, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Jane Bauer. A memorial visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday at Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs.
