The Rev. James A. Dluge
The Rev. James A. Dluge, 55, of Superior, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born to John and Clara (Tomaszewski) Dluge on March 24, 1944, in Milwaukee. He attended St. Matthew Elementary School, De Sales Preparatory Seminary, St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein. The Rev. Dluge was ordained in the Chapel of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein, on May 13, 1970, by His Eminence John Cardinal Cody. He served the parishes of St. Louis and Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior, St. Francis Xavier and St. Robert Bellarmine, Merrill, St. Mary, Tomahawk, St. Dominic in Frederic, and Immaculate Conception, Grantsburg. Father also served as chaplain of the Serra Club, Superior, chaplain of Holy Cross Convent, Merrill, and director of the Apostolate of the Sea. Because of complications due to diabetes and kidney failure, it was necessary for him to resign from active ministry on Jan. 28, 1997. He retired in Superior and was able to celebrate Mass with area parishes as needed. In August 1998, Father was admitted to the hospital for a number of health complications. His health condition appeared to stabilize. He was able to celebrate Mass at St. Anthony Parish, Lake Nebagamon, the weekend prior to his death. He celebrated the 25th anniversary of his priesthood at St. Dominic Church, Frederic, on April 30, 1995, where he had been pastor for 13 years. His biggest challenge as a priest came to him in 1990 when he was faced with a severely deformed foot due to diabetes. He was told that the leg would have to be amputated below the knee. He was convinced that it was due to prayer from his fellow priests and parishioners that this did not need to occur. He praised his housekeeper, Rita LaVenture, who had been assisting him since 1975, for her untiring assistance at home and for driving him to the hospital for treatments. He is survived by his mother, Clara, a brother, John Jr., both from Milwaukee; two nieces, Kari (Steven) Plahuta, West Allis, and Tammy (Carl) Stika, Oak Creek; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, John Sr., and sister-in-law, Mary Dluge. Visitation will be at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior, on Friday from 5-8 p.m. with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Saturday for an hour prior to the Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Bishop Raphael M. Fliss will preside. Interment will follow in the Priests' Circle of Calvary Cemetery, Superior. Pallbearers will be the Revs. Dean Buttrick, Daniel Dahlberg, John Drummy, Ron Olson, Andrew Ricci and Jim Tobolski. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Jarchow, Tom LaVenture, Doug and Mary Jo Edge, Millie Nelson, Wally Koel and Dan and Jean Judd. The family is being assisted by Downs Funeral Home.
