Orville A. Loughren
Orville A. Loughren, 71, Superior, died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Almena, and he was a longtime Superior resident. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and fought in the Battle of Okinawa. He was married to Donna Patterson on March 22, 1975, in Superior, and they recently celebrated 24 years of marriage. He was employed as a machinist for the DM&IR, Great Northern and DWP railroads. He was a former member of Christ Lutheran Church. He was a member of Henry S. Blomberg Post No. 847, Veterans of Foreign Wars; the United Brotherhood of Railway Machinists and Aerospace Workers Lodge No. 672. In addition to his wife Donna, he is survived by one son, John (Nancy) Loughren, Chicago, Ill.; three daughters, Sandy (Joe) Walsh, Duluth, Susan (Randy) Ellkington, Aurora, Minn., and Cindy (Dennis) Gokey, Superior; one stepson, William (Julie) Patterson, Superior; three stepdaughters, Mary (Mark) Peterson, Lake Nebagamon, and Sharon (Scott) Johnstead and Joan Johnson, Superior; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene (Nel) Loughren, Superior; one sister, Alana (John) Benjamin, Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Elvina Loughren; his first wife, Janet, in 1969; and his second wife, Erma, in 1974. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Presuhn, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, officiating. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and continue there from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by VFW Post No. 847. Pallbearers for the service will be David and Paul Loughren, Bill Patterson and Scott Johnstead.

Jeanne Florence Cronin
Jeanne Florence Cronin, 80, of 35 N. 28th St., Superior, a former longtime resident of 1622 Wyoming Ave., Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Aug. 2 , 1918, in Superior, to Verna (Christmas) and Edgar Brownlee and she was a lifelong resident. She was a member Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She was employed in the shoe department of Roth Brothers Department Store and later as manager of the card department prior to the store's closing. She retired from Winslow's Hallmark Shop in Duluth. She is survived by three sons, William E. (Marion) Cronin and Timothy J. (Lisa Bouchard) Cronin, Superior, and John T. Cronin, Escondido, Calif.; a daughter, Cheryl (Al) Henigar, Encinitas, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margie, Tacoma, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband, William 'John' Cronin, on May 13, 1982. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Stoskopf officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Downs Funeral Home and 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Pallbearers will be Billy Jo, Michael, Wendy and Patrick Cronin; Melissa Mandelin, Linda Davern, Stacey Frankovich and Cindy Kunert. Honorary pallbearers will be Melissa Isabella and Lyle and Joseph Kunert.

Donald L. Garin
Donald L. Garin, 58, of rural Albany, Ore., died at his home on Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, of cancer. He was born Nov. 21, 1940, in Superior, to James H. and Hazel Garin. He moved to Oregon in 1950. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three daughters, Teresa, Ann and Kelly; four brothers, James J., Lake Nebagamon, Larry (LaVonne), Superior, John (Marg), Elida, Ore., and William (Carolyn), Scio, Ore.; a sister, Stella (Tim) Garin Hubel, Otis, Ore.; and a half-sister, Sandra Rydz Olsen, Bend, Ore. A memorial and burial service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 10, in Albany.

Loretta M. Shoemaker
Loretta M. Shoemaker, 85, of 2650 E. County Road C, Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, in the Hospice Unit of St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. Loretta was born on Dec. 16, 1913, in Hastings, Minn., to William and Anna (Serres) Kieffer and had been employed for many years as a bookkeeper for Fleet Line Trucking. She had lived in Arizona for many years and had lived in the Superior area for the last year. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Del, in March of 1966. Survivors include a brother, Pete Kieffer of Northville, Minn., and several nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Holy Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Olson as celebrant. Interment icon will take place at a later date in the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Meadsville, Minn. Funeral arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Eugene 'Geno' Rich
Eugene 'Geno' Rich, 68, Heber Springs, Ark., formerly of Superior, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at his home. He was born May 16, 1931, in Spooner, to Clarence and Valora (Belford) Rich. He was a carpenter and a member of the Carpenters Union No. 361. He was also employed at Lakehead Constructors in Superior and retired as a general supervisor. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Navy, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a Pony League football coach and was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He worked with the Department of Natural Resources as a special game warden. He was a member of the Lions Club and an active member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Superior, and of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Heber Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson. He is survived by his wife, Carol J. (Baker) Rich, Heber Springs; four daughters, Audrey Rich, Dallas, Texas, and Toni Dobson, Judy Myer and Suzanne Amundson, all of Superior; two sons, Randey Rich, Chincoteague, Va., and Thomas Rich, Poplar; two stepsons, Michael Anderson, San Bruno, Calif., and Douglas Anderson, Coon Rapids, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Katrina Milinkovich, Milwaukee; two brothers; five sisters; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Christ Lutheran Church in Superior. Cremains will be interred in the church's memorial garden. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at the church. The Olmstead Funeral Home, Heber Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Dagny H. Hanson
Dagny H. Hanson, 101, Superior, a longtime East End resident, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, in her home. She was born Dec. 26, 1897, in Ashland, and was a graduate of Ashland High School. She had been a Superior resident since 1947. She was graduated from Superior Normal School with a teaching degree and taught for three years at Riverside School in Parkland. She was married to Henry Hanson on Oct. 15, 1921, after he returned from serving in World War I. They lived in Willmar, Minn., and Grand Forks, N.D., before moving to Superior. She was a member of the former First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as a deacon for six years, and its Circle II group. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans auxiliaries and was also active in the Rockmont Garden Club. She is survived by one son, Keith (Jean Bottcher) Hanson, Monmouth, Ore; a daughter-in-law, Marcella Hanson, Rehoboth Beach, Del.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, on April 3, 1968; one son, Roy Hanson, in 1988; her parents, Hans and Christine Thone; two sisters, Alma Gordon and Hannah Frank; and two brothers, Harold and Norman Thone. The funeral service is set for 2 p.m. Friday at North Bay Community Church (former First Presbyterian Church) with the Rev. Henry Hanna, pastor of United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nancy L. Berthiaume
Nancy L. Berthiaume, 50, Superior, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born May 6, 1949, in Superior, and was a lifelong resident. She was graduated from the former Cathedral High School in 1968 and was also graduated from University of Wisconsin-Superior with a degree in library science and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College with a degree in computer science. She was employed with the Douglas County Register of Deeds office for many years. She was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church. She is survived by her mother, Eloise, Superior; two sisters, Jeanne Lindfors and Shirley DeSchane, both of Superior; and several nieces and nephews. Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Berthiaume; a brother, Leonard "Lenny" Berthiaume; and her maternal grandmother, Mary Kilgore. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg, pastor, as celebrant. Interment icon will be in the St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with a vigil service scheduled for 7 p.m. that evening. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Cathedral School or the American Diabetes Association.

Anton Marsik
Anton Marsik, 87, Lake Nebagamon, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at the Middle River Health Facility. He was born Oct. 1, 1911, in Hawthorne, to Anton Sr. and Katherina (Steflik) Marsik. He owned Tony's Ponies Riding Stable for many years until he retired in 1993. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bill and Joseph. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs with the Rev. Milton Holmquist officiating. Interment icon will be in the Lake Nebagamon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Julia Golden
Julia Golden, 86, Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. She was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Wili, Conn., and had been a Superior resident since the age of 16. She was graduated from the former Central High School in 1931. She was employed as a bookkeeper and cashier for the Roth's and Stack's department stores as well as Ekstrom's Clothing. She was a member of the Seaway Seeder Garden Club, the Retired Railroad Retirees Association and the American Association of Retired Persons. She is survived by one son, Francis (Maureen) Golden, Camarillo, Calf.; one daughter, Susan (Ervin) Juvette, San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Adeline (James) Lucas, Florida; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Krajewski of Cathedral of Christ the King officiating. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service will be Ervin and Kenneth Juvette, Wallace Lee, Deo Larson, Eric Bonds and Rex Gordon. Christine Marie Keller
Christine Marie Keller, 62, Duluth, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at her home after a long struggle with cancer. She was born Nov. 12, 1936, in Duluth, to Vivian and Norman Ericksen. She attended Emerson Elementary, Washington Junior High and Central High schools. She also received a degree in occupational therapy from Lake Superior College. She was preceded in death by her father, Norman, in 1972. She is survived by her husband, Stanley; her mother, Vivian (Perry) Kennedy; sons Richard (Cindy) Johnson, John (Wendy) Pleus and Damien Pleus, all of Duluth, and Tony (Raquel) Johnson, Illinois; daughters Kim Johnson, Texas, and Stacy (Jim) Heffernan, Duluth; brothers Stanley (Diane) Ericksen, Duluth, Eugene Higgins, Las Vegas, Nev., and Raymond Higgins, Illinois; her sister, Debbie (Gilbert) Carmona, Arizona; family members in Mississippi, Norma (Gerald) Whitfield, Tony, Marcus, Marjorie, Wanda (Bill) and Ora; a brother-in-law, Leonard, and sisters-in-law Jane (Frank) Cross and Rosmarie Keller, all of Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friends Jan Montgomery and Fern Peterson as well as many other friends. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Duluth with interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Johnson Mortuary Chapel with rosary prayers at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Adelynne Alethe Wenger Kochsiek
Adelynne Alethe Wenger Kochsiek, 86, Superior, formerly of Aitkin, Minn., died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. She was born Dec. 15, 1912, in Montana. She was married to Sidney Albert Kochsiek on Sept. 5, 1936. She is survived by her husband, Sidney, Superior; a son, Kenneth (Julia) Kochsiek, Superior; two granddaughters, Susan E. Kochsiek (Tracy) Shovein, Superior, and Kathryn A. (Glenn) Hall, Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and a great-granddaughter, Caroline A. Hall, Jacksonville Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Alethe Marie. A memorial service will be held in early November in Aitkin. Arrangements are by the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

Jeanette (Kozey) Mitchell
Jeanette (Kozey) Mitchell, 71, formerly of Superior, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, in Houston, Texas. She was born July 28, 1927, in Superior and was graduated from the former Superior Central High School. After graduation she moved to Washington, D.C. where she was employed during the war. She was married there to Billy Mitchell. They later moved to Houston. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Bishop, Houston; two grandsons, three sisters, Frances Adolphson, Superior, and Leana Johnson and Dorothy Blix, both of Duluth, and several nieces and nephews locally. She was preceded in death by her husband. A graveside service was held on July 8 at the Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.

Jeannette A. Grube
Jeannette A. Grube, 74, Sun Prairie, died at a Madison hospital on Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999. She was born Feb. 17, 1925 in Superior and was a Sun Prairie resident for the past 20 years. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Adele Hoium of Sun Prairie; two grandsons, Joshua and Justin Hoium of Sun Prairie and one sister, Winfred Nichols of Superior. She was preceded in death by her husband Leslie in 1985 and two sons, Jeffery Hoium in 1971 and George Hoium in 1999. There will be no funeral service or visitation in Sun Prairie. Burial will be in Superior.

William 'Bill' Lundgren
William 'Bill' Lundgren, 69, 1726 Pine St., died unexpectedly at his home Saturday, July 31, 1999. Mr. Lundgren was born March, 3, 1930 in Superior, a son of the late Murrel and Olive (Simon) Lundgren. He graduated from Superior East High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1947. He served as a jet engine mechanic and was discharged as a staff sergeant in 1951. He then moved to Indianapolis where he taught jet engine repair. In 1952 he attended Superior State College, graduating in 1956. He then came to work for Sentry Insurance in Stevens Point as a claims adjuster. He retired in 1989 as an information systems controller. He was married to Joan Moriarity on Dec. 27, 1951 at Cathedral Catholic Church, Superior. Mr. Lundgren was on the Board of Directors of Catholic Residential Services of La Crosse and served as a lay minister at St. Stephen Catholic Church. He and his wife were past president couple of the PTA at Maria High School. He was a member of the Stevens Point Area School Board and the St. Vincent de Paul Board of Directors. Mr. Lundgren was a coach and manager for Little League for many years. He served on the Little League Board of Directors for 20 yeas and was president for six years. He enjoyed working with stained glass and doing wood -working. The joy of his life was his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Debbie (Steve) Beuchel, Wausau, Lori (Jerry) Kitowski, Black River, Patti Zachow, Oregon, Wis., and Susan Plowman, Wisconsin Rapids; two sons, Bill (Carol) Wolf-Lundgren, Staton Island, N.Y., and Tom (Jacci) Lundgren, Stevens Point; 11 grandchildren, Casey, Matt and Joe Beuchel, Katie, Nick and Beth Kitowski, Alyson Zachow, Sarah and Michelle Williams, and Hannah and Max Lundgren; two sisters, Phyllis Banks, Superior, and Karen (Roy) Thomas, Monroe; and two brothers, Ken (Bev) Lundgren, Superior, and Larry (Dorothy) Lundgren, Barron. Services were held Tuesday at St. Stephen Catholic Church with the Rev. Dan Kozlowski officiating. Burial was at the parish cemetery. The Elks Lodge No. 641, of which he was a member, held a ritual for him and the Knights of Columbus, of which he was also a member, combined with the general rosary held last Monday.

Joseph S. Turoski Jr.
Joseph S. Turoski Jr., 77, of Banks Avenue, died Thursday, August 5, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. He was born October 5, 1921 in Superior the son of Gladys and Joseph Turoski, and was a lifelong resident of Superior. He served in the United States Army in World War II and received a Bronze Medal. He was employed by the City of Superior as a truck driver for 28 years. He was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church, Superior, a member of V.F.W. Henry S. Blomberg Post 847 in Superior and the Superior Area Men's Bowling Association. He was also actively involved in Superior Area Sports. Surviving family members include his step-son, Kenneth (Faye) Wasco, Kansas City, Mo., two step-daughters, Joan (Al) Carlson, Fla., and Nancy (Tim) Leland, Duluth; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Semborski, Superior, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret in 1998. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Ronald Olson as celebrant. Visitation will be held Sunday after 5 p.m. in the William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home with a Vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded at the Cemetery by the V.F.W. Henry S. Blomberg Post 847. Pallbearers will be Tim Leland, Joe Leland, Tim J. Leland, Robert Semborski, David Semborski, Richard Semborski and Anthony Semborski. William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home is in charge of Arrangements.

Carl Eric Nelson
Carl Eric Nelson, 74, of Superior, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999 at home as a result of heart failure. He was born May 29, 1925, in Karlshamn, Sweden, to John and Agnes Nelson. He immigrated to Superior in 1934 and attended the former Carpenter and Ericsson schools, and graduated from the former Central High School. He was a World War II veteran, serving in a field artillery battalion in the U.S. Army in Europe from 1943-1946. He served a four-year electrical apprenticeship with Benson Electric from 1947-1951 and continued working for them until the fall of 1953 when he went to work for Lakehead Pipe Line Co. in Superior. In 1957, he transferred to Michigan as Lakehead was expanding its pumping capacities. In 1962, he transferred to Bay City, Mich., and became the district's electrical foreman. In 1969, he transferred back to the Superior office as chief electrician, a position he held until retirement in 1987, after 34 years of service. He was united in marriage to Rita Sawicki on Sept. 19, 1987, in Superior. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanice (Peterson), in 1984; his father, John, in 1974; one grandson, Jason Schweikert, in 1983; and a son-in-law, Gene Kulig in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Rita; five children, Richard (Janette) of Superior, Linda (Richard) Berg of Superior, Robert (Lori) of Cloquet, Charlie of Superior, and Cathy (Scott) Schweikert of Superior; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; his mother, Agnes Erickson of Superior; one sister, Marilyn (James) Peterson of Superior; and nieces and a nephew. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home in Superior, with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Superior by the Rev. Ronald Olson. Interment icon will be at St. Francis Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.

Donald Rodney Smith
Donald Rodney Smith, 64, of 9428 S. County Road A, Solon Springs, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at his residence. He was born July 13, 1935, in Superior, the son of Mary and Morley Smith Sr. He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1953. In 1958 he moved to Chatsworth, Calif., and returned to Solon Springs in 1997. He was the owner-operator of the D. Rodney Smith Insurance Agency, retiring in 1986. He is survived by his wife, Gloria, Solon Springs; three sons, Richard (Theresa) Smith, Coronado, Calif., Randolph (Angela) Smith, Baton Rouge, La., and Rodney Smith, Ravenswood, W. Va.; six grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Smith, Madison; and one sister, Elizabeth Fredrick, Superior. Visitation will be Saturday at 10 a.m. with the funeral following at 11 a.m. at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home in Superior. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Duluth.

James Paul Schaefer
James Paul Schaefer, 70, a resident of Gordon, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at his home. He was born Feb. 8, 1929, in Chicago, to James and Theresa (Martin) Schaefer and came to Gordon with his family when he was 8 years old. He graduated from Gordon High School in 1948 and then farmed for one year. In 1949 he started working in the Great Lakes shipping industry. His first job was as a coal passer. On June 8, 1951, he married Jean Helen Deady in Superior. In 1960 he attended the Maritime College of Engineering, receiving his chief engineering license. In 1978 he retired as a chief engineer. He was a member of District 2 of the M.E.B.A. since 1959. He was a member of the Gordon Volunteer Fire Department for many years, served as secretary for the Men's Bowling League in Gordon for 10 years, and has been an avid bowler for many years. Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Gordon; a son, Bud Schaefer, Minong; two daughters, Bonnie (Jerry) Van Domelen of Gordon and Roberta Schaefer, Burnsville, Minn.; four grandchildren, Rebecka Foix, Amanda Little, Annie Little and Patrick Little Jr.; one great-granddaughter, Kaytlynn Foix; and a sister, Joan Tyler, Tucson, Ariz. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Johnson, in 1988; a son, John, in 1990; his parents; and a brother, Nicholas. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs, with Roger Elm officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Interment icon will be in the Gordon Memorial Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Roger Postl, George Graven, George Booth, Tom Chandler, Ron Cook and Mert Warner.

James William Meteraud
James William Meteraud, born May 16, 1943, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, after a brief battle with cancer. He was employed for more than 15 years at Baldwin Supply Co. An avid Green Bay Packer fan, he still enjoyed helping with Baldwin's pre-game Viking cookouts. He spent many years coaching kids' hockey teams. A lifelong outdoorsman, he also loved gardening and weekends at the lake. He was a 1961 graduate of Superior Central High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and a past president of the Billings Park Civic Association in Superior. Surviving are four sisters, Patricia Rep, Superior, Julieanna (Fred) Grimsrud, Phoenix, Ariz., Mary Daphne (Merrill) Busch, Minneapolis, and Donna (Chuck) Erickson, Minneapolis; one brother, Thomas R. Meteraud, Charleston, S.C.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and numerous friends, including his many friends among co-workers and customers of Baldwin Supply Co. Esther L. Pasternak
Esther L. Pasternak, 85, formerly a longtime Bennett and Superior resident, currently residing at 1800 New York Ave., died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, in St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born May 18, 1914, in Kettle River, Minn., to Mary Josephine (Perala) and John E. Hendrickson. She had worked during World War II in the Butler Shipyards. Following the war, she was employed by the Androy Hotel. In 1976, she retired from Middle River Sanitarium after many years of service. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara M. (Richard T.) Karlon, Superior, and Marie J. (Elbert A.) Zaun, Superior; two sisters, Ethel M. Korpi and Lillian Nordlund, both of Kettle River; a brother, Alfred Hendrickson, Kettle River; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Gerald, in 1936; her husband, Rudolph Felix Pasternak, on Jan. 20, 1994; and eight brothers and sisters, Ellen Miles, Marie Schafer, Elina Johnson, Violet Kemppainen, and Olga, Mayme, Ailie and Harold Hendrickson. Visitation begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Downs Funeral Home and continues there until the funeral at noon. The Rev. Ron Olson of Holy Assumption Catholic Church will officiate, with interment to be in the Lake Nebagamon Cemetery.

Joan P. Bradshaw
Joan P. Bradshaw, 68, of 15326 Redinger Road, Gordon, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, in Duluth. She was born Nov. 18, 1930, in Superior, and resided in the area all of her life, including in Duluth for many years before moving to Gordon in 1986. She had been employed as a bookkeeper by Upper Lakes Foods. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gordon and its Altar Society. She was a former member of Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior. In addition, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, had been active in PTA and a member of the Wood Tones. Surviving are two sons, Jim (Becky) and Tim (Lori), both of Duluth; one daughter, Kim (Tom) Buchanan, Superior; her mother, Esther 'G.G.' Toutloff, Duluth; eight grandchildren, Erin, Kara, John, Tim, Steven, Emily and Ian Bradshaw and Nathan Finstad. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin 'Corky' Bradshaw, who died in 1996, and by her father, John Toutloff. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior with the Rev. James Powers of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gordon officiating. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior. Ellen H. Ranta
Ellen H. Ranta, 86, a resident of Fall Creek Nursing Home, Fall Creek, Wis., died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999. She was born on March 24, 1913, in Lakeside, Wis., to Frank and Marija Wiitanen. She had lived for 40 years in the town of Cloverland, Wis., and was a homemaker. Survivors include a daughter, Elmie Henning of Eau Claire; children Donald Ranta of South Range, Ronald Ranta of Maple, Gerald (Virginia) Ranta of Elk Mound, Rosie Ward of Minnesota, and Charlie Ranta and Tommie Ranta, both of Superior; daughters-in-law Joy, Donna and Pat; one nephew, Duane Wiitanen; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arvid in 1983; son Arnold; daughter Edna; brother Eino Wiitanen; and three sisters. Pallbearers include Dan, Wayne, Jim and Matt Henning and David and Steve Ranta. Visitation will be Saturday at Lakeside Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral. The Rev. Charles O. Heidemann Jr.
Charles O. Heidemann Jr., 70, Superior, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. Born July 28, 1929, in Superior, he was a longtime area resident. He was previously employed at the American Can Co. until 1971 when he started the Country Corner Restaurant in Hawthorne until 1981 when he retired. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Itasca Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Lucille; one son, Charles Heidemann III, Duluth; two daughters, Deborah Hughes, Marengo, Ohio, and Lorie Murphy, Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Gene Heidemann, Woodruff, Wis., and Rex Heidemann, Calhoun, Ga.; three sisters, Ginger Pearson, Poplar, Sally Rampier, Solon Springs, and Mona Larson, Leonard, Minn.; his mother, Nellie Heidemann, Superior; two step-daughters, Laurie Bolas, South Range, and Terri Boyer, New York Mills, Minn.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Michael in 1974; his father Charles Heidemann Sr. in 1989; and a brother, Jerry Heidemann, in 1955. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home and will continue at 10 a.m. Friday until the 11 a.m. memorial service with the Rev. H. Duane Aslyn, pastor, officiating. John H. Pooler
John H. Pooler, 75, of Lake Nebagamon, died on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at St Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born to Harvey and Ruth Pooler in Cornell, Wis., on July 4, 1920, and had been a longtime area resident living at Lake Nebagamon for 40 years. He was employed as a carman by the Soo Line Railroad retiring in 1986 after many years of service. When he was younger he had worked on a farm in Cornell, had been a well driller, worked as a welder at Fraser Shipyards, was a logger in the Lake Nebagamon area and also had worked at the iron ore mines in Hibbing driving trucks. He loved to hunt and fish and spend time with his family. Survivors include his wife, the former Helen Carothers, whom he married in Durand, Wis., on Dec. 14, 1945; five sons, Jack (Arola), of Sheldon, Wis., Dean (Lucy) and David (Yvonne), both of Lake Nebagamon, Edward (Terry), Mosinee, and Richard (Linda), Hawthorne; a daughter, Joanne (Kevin) O'Hara, South Range; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and several half-brothers and half-sisters. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Alice Breeze, Violet Jones, Lottie Stohl, Hazel Carothers and Inez Bachler, a brother, Edwin Pooler, and his parents, Harvey and Ruth Pooler. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. on Friday at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home where the funeral will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Rev Scott Ludford will officiate and burial will be at Lake Nebagamon Cemetery.

Ivan Thorvald Nielsen
Ivan Thorvald Nielsen, 75, of 8001 S. Dowling Lake Road, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999 at his residence following a lengthy battle with cancer. Born March 3, 1924 in Superior, he was a lifelong resident. He was a first sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Force in Europe during World War II. Mr. Nielsen was employed from 1946-82 by H.W. Brace Co., where he was vice president, secretary and general manager. From 1982-89, he was employed by McLean Construction Company. During the construction of the Twin Ports Veterans Clinic in Superior, he was employed by Superior Memorial Hospital and McLean Construction as construction supervisor. He was a 1942 graduate of the former Superior Central High School. He was a member of the Tri-Lakes Civic Club and a commissioner of the Amnicon and Dowling Lake Management District. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy 'Dody'; a son, Ivan Scott (Lucy) Nielsen, Superior; a daughter, Christie (Thomas) Seubert, Hendersonville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Will, Liz and Joe Seubert; and two brothers, Marvin (Eleanor) Nielsen, Rice Lake, and Bernard (Maxine) Nielsen, Castro Valley, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thor and Alma (Borgman) Nielsen and an infant son, Hans E. Nielsen. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Riverside Cemetery. Carol Pearl Smith
Carol Pearl Smith, 90, Wascott, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999 at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 16, 1909 in Minong to John and Alzina (Salisbury) Goodwin. On April 28, 1929 she married Hugh Mitchell Smith in Cloquet, and they lived in Scanlon, Minn., from 1934-1967. Mrs. Smith had been employed as a bookkeeper by the Public Market grocery store in Cloquet. After moving back to Wascott, she was very active in the Wascott Community Club and the Wascott Community Church. Survivors include a nephew, Clinton "Bud" (Vera) Goodwin, Wascott; several nieces and other nephews; and special friends, Mike and Bonnie Schmidt, Carlsbad, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugh, on Oct. 5, 1971; three brothers, Percy, Jack and Clinton Goodwin; and one sister, Emma Smith. At her request, there will be no services. Interment icon will be in the Wascott Cemetery. The Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs is handling the arrangements.

Maurice Be Beau
Maurice Be Beau, 60, of 2866 Humboldt Court, Las Vegas, Nevada, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999 at his residence. He was born in Edmonton, Canada on Aug. 21, 1938 and resided in Las Vegas the past 10 years. He was a plumber by trade and a member of the Plumbers Local Union. Surviving are his wife, Irene S., Las Vegas; a son, Robert De Rosier, Las Vegas; two daughters, Denise Clark, Superior, and Lynette, State of Washington; a sister, Gail Diekhoff, Chershire, Oregon; two brothers, Vern Bi Boux, also of Chershire, and Gene Bi Boux, Monroe, Oregon; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. At Mr. Be Beau's request, no services were held. Arrangements were handled by the Affordable Cremation and Burial Service in Las Vegas.

Viola M. Delaware
Viola M. Delaware, 96, Superior, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at Southdale Health Care. She was born on August 8, 1903 in Lake Nebagamon, to Michael and Matilda Ofstead. She married Lawrence J. Delaware on April 15, 1929 in Superior. Survivors include her daughter, Judith (Judy) Wilson, Solon Springs; four grandchildren, Barbara King and Kathy Jodell, Superior, Lisa (Matt) Otto, Hillsdale, Wis., Michael (Elizabeth) Wilson, Colorado; six great-grandchildren, Erik King, Skye Cochran, Ryan Jodell, Shannon Jodell, Geri Wilson, and Kristy Wilson. One great-great-grandchiId, Alex McGill. One sister, Mildred Ofstead, Superior. She was preceded in death by her husband in June 1963, her parents, her sister Elfreeda Holt, and her brother Walter. Dale H. Kronlund
Dale H. Kronlund, 72, 1606 Ohio Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999 in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice Unit after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 8, 1927 in Superior and was a lifelong resident. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired in 1987 after 41 years of service with the Burlington Northern Railroad. He was a charter member of the Fishing Hall of Fame and a member of VFW Post 15051 of Madison and the American Association of Retired Persons. He was an avid deer hunter, fisherman and gardener. He and his wife, the former Norma Acker, were married Aug. 13, 1949 and would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary yesterday. He is survived by his wife, Norma; a daughter, Irene (Larry) Conklin, Superior; five granddaughters, Tammy (Brian) Anderson, Sheila and Kimberly St. John, Rhonda Wright and Tracy Yepma; six great-grandchildren, Brandon Wright, Nicole and Nathan Anderson, Kaela Carlson, Zachary and Shawna Yepma; a sister, Marilyn (Milton) Burm, Superior; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda St. John, his parents, Albert and Clara (Bartels) Kronlund, a twin brother, Daryl Kronlund and a sister, Joyce Laberdie. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Downs Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Stoskopf of Our Savior's Lutheran Church officiating. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Active pallbearers will be Irene Conklin, Larry Conklin, Brian Anderson, Jeremy Carlson, Warren Nelson and Timothy Laberdie. The Rev. Austin B. Corrigan
The Rev. Austin B. Corrigan, 85, died on Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999. He was in the 56th year of his priesthood. He was born in Mondovi, Wis., on Dec. 25, 1913, the son of John and Rosalia (Rynes) Corrigan. He attended St. Thomas College, St. Paul, and completed his seminary education at St. John University, Collegeville, Minn. He was ordained a priest on June 6, 1943, by the Most Reverend Peter W. Bartholome at St. John Abbey, Collegeville The Rev. Corrigan's first appointment was as associate pastor of St. Mary Parish, Hurley. After one year, he was appointed associate, and then administrator of St. Patrick Parish, Minocqua. In December 1945, he was appointed associate pastor of St. Anne Parish, Somerset, and three months later named administrator of Immaculate Conception Parish, Hammond. In June 1946, he was named administrator of St. Albert the Great Parish, Land O'Lakes, where he served for eight years, and was then appointed pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Superior. On June 13, 1957, he was appointed pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, New Richmond. During his 13 years as pastor there he was responsible for building the new church. In August 1970, the Rev. Corrigan was named pastor of St. Ann Parish, Turtle Lake, a position he retained until his retirement on June 30, 1982. In February 1961, he was named diocesan consultor to the bishop, a position he continued to hold even after his retirement, until 1985. In April 1963, he was appointed vicar general of the Diocese, a position he also held until 1985. After his retirement in 1982 at St. Peter Rectory, Cameron, the Rev. Corrigan continued to celebrate the Eucharist and visit the sick. On June 1, 1993, St. Ann Parish, Turtle Lake, invited Father's family, close friends and fellow priests to join him in celebrating the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Because of his failing health, he moved to Royalton Manor, Superior, in 1988. He continued to help his fellow priests in times of emergency. He was featured in a Vocation Section of the Nov. 9, 1989, issue of the Superior Catholic Herald. Surviving him are a brother, Charles Corrigan, McAllen, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Wiess, Seattle, Wash.; many nieces and nephews, including John Corrigan of Rochester, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, George and Robert, and two sisters, Grace and Eileen. Visitation will be Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. in Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the Mass. The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Bishop Raphael Fliss at noon on Wednesday at Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior. Burial will follow in the Priests' Circle at Calvary Cemetery, Superior. Pallbearers will be the Revs. Ron Olson, Jim Tobolski, Dean Buttrick, Phil Heslin, Daniel Dahlberg, Rob Krajewski, Irving Meyette and George Votruba. Anthony R. "Tony" Depta
Anthony R. "Tony" Depta, 52, of Superior, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born Nov. 15, 1946, in Superior to Anthony and Helen (Krynski) Depta. He graduated from Superior Cathedral High School in 1964 and from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1968, where he was a member of FEX Fraternity. He was a Vietnam veteran and served in Korea. He taught junior high English and history in Hayward from 1971-1983. He taught The Dale Carnegie course in Human Relations and Public Speaking for several years. He was employed as a sales representative by Larson Chevrolet-Olds-Aurora Inc. in Superior for the past 10 years. He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and was a gifted storyteller. He was preceded in death by his father Anthony in 1976. He is survived by his wife Becky; his mother, Helen Depta, of Superior; two sons, Joseph of New Mexico and Steven of Superior; a daughter, Danielle Richardson, of Superior; one grandson, Jacob; four sisters, Diane Depta of Superior, Maureen (Daniel) Nussberger of St. Joseph, Minn., Susan (Dennis) Martineau of Superior and Janette (Dick) Nelson of Superior; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Steve Glonchak. Loren Arthur Swanberg
Loren Arthur Swanberg, 82, of Superior and Solon Springs, died Saturday morning, Aug. 14, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. He was born on June 7, 1917, in Grantsburg, the son of Frances (Anderson) and Arthur Swanberg. He grew up and attended school in Gordon. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in the European Theater. On April 18, 1943, he was united in marriage to Mildred Helland in Superior, and they recently celebrated 56 years of marriage. He worked as an electrician for the Electrical Workers Union, retiring in 1982. He was a lifelong resident of the Superior area. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 499 of Gordon, the Itasca Masonic Lodge and the Electrical Workers Union Local 242. He is survived by his wife Mildred, Superior; a son, Ronald (Shirley) Swanberg of Beaver Dam; a daughter, Julie (Wellington) Haight of Albuquerque, N.M.; two grandsons, Garrett and Neil Haight of Albuquerque; one granddaughter, Kimberly (Daniel) Helmer of Beaver Dam; one brother, Duane (Beth) Swanberg of Florida; four sisters, Lulu Micheli and Beatrice McGrath, both of California, Lorna (Fran) Bedard of South Carolina, and Marlyce (Richard) Peterson of Arkansas; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, Kevin Swanberg and Adam Haight, and one brother, Allen. Edythe Mae Dahlberg
Edythe Mae Dahlberg, 83, formerly of Poplar, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999 in the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 1, 1916 in Kelsey, Minn., she had resided in Poplar most of her life. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and its Dorcas Circle and the Poplar Study Club. She is survived by six sons, Theodore (Mary Ann) Dahlberg, Solon Springs, A. Dale (Shirley) Dahlberg of Gordon, Lloyd (Cathy) Dahlberg, Misawa, Japan, Richard Dahlberg, Duluth, Raymond (Georgia) Dahlberg, Fond du Lac, and Stanley (Claudia) Dahlberg, Town of Lakeside; two daughters, Nancy (Fred) Renman, South Range, and Kay Riggio, Superior; two sisters, Evelyn Olson and Opal Watsula, both of Meadowlands, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Dahlberg was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore A. Dahlberg Sr., a son, Dennis Dahlberg and her parents, Charles M. and Sarah (Yoakum) Stevens. Jack Logan
Jack Logan, 76, 1201 N. 16th St., died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999 in St. Mary's Medical Center following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 17, 1923 in Eagle Grove, Iowa and resided in Superior since 1983. He was an Army veteran. Mr. Logan received a bachelor of arts degree in political science and economics and master of arts degree in school administration. He was employed as a teacher by Maranatha Academy in Superior for several years. He was a member of First Covenant Church and its Sunday School, the American Legion, Christian Association of Prime Timers and Maranatha Academy. Survivors include two sons, Nicholas (Joanne) Logan, Fenton, Mich., and Maclennan 'Mac' Logan, Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Laurie (husband Randy Braley) Logan of Malden, Mass.; two granddaughters, Molly and Emily Braley; a brother, Michael (Sarah) Logan, Iowa City, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and children by adoption, Christine, Guy and Luke Logan. The funeral will be held at First Covenant Church at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to First Covenant Church. She was born Oct. 10, 1946 in Marinette, Wis., the daughter of Joseph and Helen Leszcynski, and had resided in Superior for over 30 years. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior and had been employed by the Yale (Michigan) School District as an elementary school teacher. Survivors include one sister, Jo Jean Emerick, in England; eight aunts, Helene Leszcynski, Superior, Marge Naslund, Duluth, Joyce Goth, Beltsville, Md., Evelyn Erickson, Spokane, Wash., Mary Jane Koeppl, El Toro, Calif., Fern, Irene and Margaret Leszcynski; one uncle, Casimir (Arlene) Leszcynski, Lincoln, Neb.; and three nephews. Fred L. Williams
Fred L. Williams, 66, formerly of Superior, died at home in Lakehurst, N.J., on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999. A resident of Renaissance Country Club in Lakehurst, formerly of Normandy Beach and Murray Hill, N.J., he was born in Superior and graduated from the former Superior Central High School. Mr. Williams began his 43-year career with the Kinney Shoe Corporation in Superior, managing stores in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and California before being promoted to District Manager in 1963. In 1964 he was transferred to the New York office and was promoted to Senior Vice President and appointed a member of the Kinney Board of Directors August, 1986. He was a member of The Arc of Union, Ocean and Monmouth Counties, and active with The Arc of New Jersey. A member of the Watchung Council, he was Scoutmaster of Troop 363 in New Providence, N.J., from 1971-1976. He was a member of the Council of Faith Lutheran Church in Lavallette and previously Faith Lutheran Church in Murray Hill, and belonged to the American Legion. Mr. Williams, president of Fred L. Williams Associates, was a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, a Colonel of the ICSC Rat Pack and on the editorial board of Shopping Center Business. His wife Phyllis, daughters Dee Dee, Asbury Park and Nancy, Normandy Beach, sons Paul, Hagerstown, Md., Randall, Cranford, grandsons, Jonathan Frederick and Joshua N. Mayes, survives him. His parents, Austin M. and Nina C. (Witzig) Williams predeceased him. A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Murray Hill, N.J.

Gerald T. Donahue, 83, Rice Lake, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999 at the Rice Lake Convalescent Center; a graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Nora Cemetery, Rice Lake; Appleyard's Home for Funerals, Rice Lake, handled the arrangements.

Thomas Dale Wilcox
Thomas Dale Wilcox, 63, Minneapolis, formerly of the Town of Chicog, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, in Minneapolis; a memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Brown Funeral Home, Minong.

Raymond John Egnash
Raymond John Egnash, 72, of 1624 N. 58th St., died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999 in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Jan. 1, 1927 in Superior and was a lifelong resident. He retired in 1987 from the Burlington Northern Railroad after over 40 years of service, retiring as an engineer. Mr. Egnash was a U.S. Navy of World War II. He was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church and the United Transportation Union. He and his wife, Bonnie, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Feb. 16, 2000. In addition to his wife, Bonnie, survivors include two sons, Dan Egnash, Superior, and Mike (LaChelle) Egnash, Oak Grove, Minn.; a granddaughter, Denise (Mike) Freeman, of Superior; four grandsons, Jeremy Egnash, Superior, and Mike, Dan and Tim Egnash, all of Oak Grove; a great-grandson, Griffin Freeman, Superior; three sisters, Pauline Mueller, Superior, Lorraine Oraskovich, Tigard, Oregon, and Jean Marcowka, Superior.; and a niece and nephew, Holly and Jerry O'Toole. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Sophie (Fronski) Egnash, two brothers and two sisters. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Downs Funeral Home with Fr. Ronald Olson of Holy Assumption Catholic Church officiating. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery.
