Gloria J. Hizinski
Gloria J. Hizinski, 67, of 518 N. 21st St., died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. Born April 14, 1932, in Superior, she was a lifelong city resident. She had been employed as a laboratory technician by Mariner Medical Clinic. She was an active member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Surviving are her husband, Robert; a daughter, Deborah (Roger) Stalvig, Superior; two sons, Kevin Melander, Milwaukee, and Milo Starcevich, Superior; a sister, Delores White, Superior; a brother, Roger (Louise) Garrison, Seneca, S.C.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Mabel Garrison; a brother, Ernest Garrison; a sister, Edith (Elwood) Denno; an infant son, David; and an infant sister, Evelyn. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christian and Missionary Alliance Church with the Rev. Roger Barden officiating. Interment icon will be in Graceland Cemetery. James 'Jim" Vincent Scully
James 'Jim" Vincent Scully, of 626 N. 22nd St., died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior. He was born Aug. 1, 1913, in Elmhirst, Long Island, New York, the son of James Vincent and Catherine Scully. He graduated from high school in New York and then went on to get his degree in agriculture at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific where he was awarded the Silver Star and promoted to the rank of captain. He had been employed for over 35 years as regional supervisor with Met Life for the Farm & Ranch Mortgage Division. He Iived in Superior for the last 25 years. On March 21, 1991, he married his wife, Beverly (Tefft) in Superior. He was a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Surviving family members include his wife, Beverly (Tefft), Superior; one son, Douglas (Brenda) Tefft, Superior; one daughter, Brenda Lee Tefft, Rochester, Minn.; one brother, William Scully, Cleveland, Ohio; two nephews, Brian (Cathleen) Scully, Colchester, Vt., and William (Kathleen) Scully, Cleveland, Ohio; two granddaughters, Marge (Tom) Waletzko, Superior, and Cathleen (Eric) Ericson, Superior; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchiIdren. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeff Tefft, daughter, Mary Lou Peck, his parents, Jim and Catherine Scully, one brother, Joseph, one sister, Catherine, and first wife, Margaret Scully. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. James Tobolski officiating. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Friday at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be James Tracy, James Dulemba, Nick Dulemba, Melvin Maki, William Downs Jr., and Dr. Robert Sellers. Bernice F. Tharge
Bernice F. Tharge, 84, of 905 N. 21st St., died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. Born Sept. 4, 1915, in Superior, she was a lifelong city resident. Surviving are a son, Lawrence Jr., Superior; four daughters, Caroline Oliphant, Superior, Shirley Bacon, Minneapolis, Beverly (Russell) Quinn, Superior, and Dorothy (Bob) Davis, in North Dakota; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Timmons, Spring Grove, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, in 1989, and a daughter, Bertha, in 1995. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Greenwood Cemetery. Downs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Ruthgeerts
Joseph Ruthgeerts, 64, Hibbing, Minn., formerly of Ladysmith and Superior, was struck and killed in a pedestrian-vehicle accident Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999 while crossing Highway 169 in Hibbing. He was born in Superior on Oct. 15, 1934, the second child of Emil and Rose (Van Landschoot) Ruthgeerts. He served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Ruthgeerts retired as a developmental studies instructor in May of 1999 from Mount Senario College, Ladysmith, after a lifetime in education. He had taught at both high school and college levels. He taught high school in Gilman, Wis., and at the college level at Michigan Technological University at Houghton, the University of Minnesota-Duluth and for the last 14 years at Mount Senario College in Ladysmith. He also had teaching assistanceships at Northeastern University, Boston, Mass., and the University of Ontario, Kitchener-Waterbo, Ontario. He received his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the former WSSU-Superior, at Northeastern, the University of Ontario and at UMD. Though his field of study was English/Humanities, he was knowledgeable in the sciences and enjoyed the arts. He is survived by sisters, Elaine (Terrance) DeVinck, Superior, and Marie Ruthgeerts, Hibbing, Minn.; a nephew, Brian DeVinck, Atlanta, Ga.; five nieces, Nancy (Pat) Pickett, Mt. Iron, Minn., Sandra Hill, Janesville, Debra (Mike) McGahey, Prior Lake, Minn., Linda (Dave) Borgen, and Beth (Jeff) Nuendorf, Lino Lakes, Minn.; three grandnieces; three grandnephews; aunts, Clara DeBock, Erma Gaynor and Thelma Van Landschoot, all of Superior; and many cousins. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Monday and continues until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Superior. Fr. Dean Buttrick will be celebrant, with interment to be in St. Francis Cemetery, Superior. The Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Gudren "Goodie" Laska
Gudren "Goodie" Laska, 83, of Hayward, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999 in the Hayward Nursing Home. She was born April 16, 1916 in Superior, the daughter of Wilhelm and Christine (Larson) Johnson. She grew up and attended school in Superior and Duluth, and graduated from Duluth State Teachers College in 1936. She taught in the rural schools of Wachanabo and Finlayson in Minnesota. On June 28, 1941 she was united in marriage to Stanley L. Laska in Finlayson. They moved to Hayward in 1948 where they owned and operated Laska's Greenhouse and Nursery until 1979. She was a life member of the Hayward VFW Musky Capitol Post #7233 Auxiliary, and a charter member of the Hayward Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Stanley; five daughters, Christine (Robert) Somerville, Flagstaff, Ariz., Carol Morgan (Roger Knudson), Sandra (Donald) Sheehan and Lynn (Matthew) Fitch, all of Hayward, and Lori (Ric) Suchanek, Madison; her son, James Laska, Hayward; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Margaret Yernberg, Duluth; and nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters Mabel Edwardson and Jennie Artemenko. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Hayward. Pastor Tim Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hayward. Visitation will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home. Dennis W. Franklin
Dennis W. Franklin, 51, of Weeks Avenue, Superior, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999 at his residence. He was born on March 15, 1948, the son of Delaus and Faye Franklin. He was a member of the Superior Knights of Columbus. Mr. Franklin is survived by his sister, Sandy (Duane) Halonen, Foxboro; two nephews, James Halonen, Superior and Mike (Emily) Halonen of Superior; and a special friend, Kathy Vergardos. No public services are being held. William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon Alton Johnson
Vernon Alton Johnson, 80, a former Duluth businessman and resident, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, in the Grantsburg Hospital. Vernon was born Aug. 17, 1919, in Grantsburg to John C. and Anna O. (Lockert) Johnson. He grew up in the Grantsburg area and was drafted into the Army in April of 1941. He became part of Co. A, 192nd Tank Battalion, Fort Knox, Ky. After completing boot camp he was sent to Clark Field in the Philippine Islands and was there when the Japanese bombed the field on Dec. 8, 1941. When all their food and supplies were depleted the troops were forced to surrender to the Japanese on April 9, 1942. He survived what is known as the Bataan Death March and 3 1/2 years as a POW in Japanese prison camps. He was discharged from the Army as a staff sergeant on June 28, 1946, after a long hospitalization to recover from his years as a prisoner of war. He received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the POW Medal among other distinguished awards. Vernon was married to Helen Grace Wicklund on Feb. 2, 1949, and they moved to the Twin Ports area. After working for many years selling and repairing boats and motors, he and a partner opened Twin Ports Welding and Marine in West Duluth. He retired in 1978 and he and Helen moved back to their hometown of Grantsburg where he worked part time for Hwy. 70 Sports. He enjoyed playing the guitar, violin and banjo and entertained at family gatherings and community events. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the DAV, the Defenders of Bataan and Corregador, the Purple Heart and the American Ex-Prisoners of War. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Chester, Freeman, Earl and Dewayne, and a sister, Mabel Swenson. He is survived by Helen, his wife of 51 years; two sons, Richard (Bonnie) Johnson, Grantsburg, and Dennis (Darla) Johnson, Superior; a daughter, Nancy (Ron) Peterson, Mora, Minn.; five grandchildren, Richard and Natalie Johnson and Jennifer, Aaron and Jacob Peterson; two step-granddaughters, Quincey and Kristi; two great-grandchildren, Emma-Leigh and Kolton; a sister, Gladys Caroon, and by a brother, Marlly. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the Edling-Taylor Funeral Home in Grantsburg. Visitation was Friday evening.

Gordon W, Paton
Gordon W, Paton, Gordon W, Paton, 89, of Englewood, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999. He was bom Dec, 1, 1909 in Superior and moved to Englewood 30 years ago from Superior. A podiatrist, he had a practice in Superior before retiring. He served in World War II in the Navy attached to the First Marine Division in the South Pacific in the medical battalion. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 236 in Superior and a charter member of the Lake Nebagamon Gun Club in Lake Nebagamon. Survivors include two cousins, Merilyn Thelander of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Sid Ross of Sarasota, Fla. There will be no services. The National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte (Fla.) Chapter is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home, Dousman, WI 53118.

June Burnham
June Burnham, 76, of 1800 New York Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, in St. Francis Home in the Park. Born Aug. 30, 1923, in Superior, she was a Superior resident for most of her life. She was a retired nurse's aide, having worked for Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She had also worked several years in the restaurant business. She was a Foster Grandparent Program volunteer and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Myers, Algar, Ohio, and Judy Archambault, Superior; two sons, Kenneth Burnham, Collegedale, Tenn., and Greg (Elaine) Burnham, Kenosha; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a special friend, Doris Thompson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wendy Johnson, and four sisters and three brothers. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday.

June L. Casper
June L. Casper, 76, 1800 New York Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. Born June 18, 1923, in Superior, she was a lifelong resident. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King and was a 1941 graduate of Superior Central High School. During the 1950s, she helped developed women's softball leagues in Superior. Surviving are two sons, Mark (Cathy) Casper and Jack (Kathy) Casper, both of Superior; five grandchildren; a sister, Luella Golden, Portland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Sr., in 1973, three brothers, Herbert, Orville and Archie Cochrane, and a sister, Leona Franzen. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Dahlberg of Cathedral of Christ the King. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Zetha 'Zee' Randall
Zetha 'Zee' Randall, 89, of Peoria, Ariz., died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, in Sun Health Hospice Care, Peoria. She was born in Duluth. She moved to Arizona in 1985 from Idaho. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Pollock, Idaho. She is survived by a brother, Richard R. Ullan, and a sister, Dorothea Stearns, both of Superior; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Randall, parents Victor and Minnie Ullan, and brothers Lloyd and John. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Forest Hill Cemetery, 2516 Woodland Ave., Duluth. Steven L. Sorensen
Steven L. Sorensen, a well-known Spooner businessman, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at his home following a Iengthy battle with cancer. He was born Nov. 24, 1945, to Bruce and Carole (Skinner) Sorensen at Menomonie and was raised at Spooner. He was a 1963 graduate of Spooner High School. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1969. He returned to Spooner as a manager at the Red Cross Pharmacy. On Oct. 9, 1971, he was united in marriage to Susan Zeug at Eau Claire. They resided in Spooner and he was actively involved in the family owned pharmacy up until the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Susan; two sons, Eric (Keri) Sorensen, Charlotte, N.C., and Gregory Sorensen, Minneapolis; one daughter, Julie Sorensen, River Falls; two grandchildren Kyle and Kaela; his mother, Carole Sorensen, Spooner; paternal grandmother, Ruby Sorensen, Shell Lake; two sisters Kris (William) Busch of Spooner and Kim Sorensen of Culver City, Calif.; one brother Monte (Sandra) Sorensen of Schofield; a nephew Chad, niece Andrea and a great-nephew, Tyler. He was preceded in death by his father Bruce and grandparents Augie Sorensen and Milt and Nora Skinner. A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Spooner, with the Rev. Donald J. Gribble officiating. The family will greet friends from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service. Private interment will follow in the Spooner Cemetery. Mildred C. West
Mildred C. West, 84, a longtime resident of Superior's East End, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, in St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born Nov. 20, 1914, in Superior, graduated from the former East High School here and had been a longtime member of the former First United Methodist Church in Superior. She was a longtime employee of the Food Service Department of the School District of Superior. She was also employed as a circulation clerk by the Duluth News-Tribune and as an office clerk by the former City Market in Superior for many years. She enjoyed collecting antiques, having operated a number of antique businesses in the Superior area throughout her life. Surviving are three sons, James (Jean) West, Poplar, Thomas (Patricia) West, Solon Springs, and Charles (Judith) West, Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Evelyn Swap, Superior; seven grandchildren, James West Jr. and Cindy West, both of St. Paul, John and Michael West, both of Superior, Ryan West, Chippewa Falls, and Stacy and Bradley West, Marietta, Ga.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover, two sisters, Betty Jane Nilsen and Ruth Mikelson, three brothers, Walter Nilsen Sr., Robert Nilsen and Arnie Nilsen, and her parents, Harold and Ingebard Nilsen. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday and continues Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral Wednesday at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Interment icon will be in the Nemadji Cemetery. Barbara A. (Jacovetti) Boswell
Barbara A. (Jacovetti) Boswell, 66, St. Peters, Mo., formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, in Elizabeth House-Four Seasons Hospital. She was born March 29, 1933, in Superior, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in South St. Charles, Mo., for over 20 years. Surviving are her daughters, Kathy (Robert) Gates, Mechanicsburg, Pa., Kimberly Boswell, Hendersonville, N.C., and Karen Barnett, Fairbanks, Alaska; a son, Kyle (Maria) Boswell, St. Peters; and six grandchildren, Lindsay and Lauren Gates, both of Mechanicsburg, Jacob and Danielle Barnett, both of Fairbanks, and Kayla and James Boswell, both of St. Peters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin W. Boswell, her parents, Albert and Eva Jacovetti, and a brother, James Jacovetti. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hope Lutheran Church, 1975 Old Highway 94, South St. Charles, Mo., where visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Mary Ann Johnson
Mary Ann Johnson, of S. Basswood Ave., Duluth, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home. She was born in Maxwell, Iowa, to William and Emma Oakley Woodcock and had been a Duluth resident since 1943. She was formerly employed by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. and also by Western Electric. She is survived by sons, Richard (Maria), San Diego, Calif., and John (Sue), Duluth; daughters, Carol (Kirk) Gomon, Duluth, and Hope (Don) Walberg, Superior; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard, in 1992; two brothers, Walter Woodcock and John Woodcock; and a sister, Joanne Johnson. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, with interment to be in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Clem R. Lull
Clem R. Lull, 95, formerly of Holyoke, Minn., died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Mercy Hospital and Health Care Center in Moose Lake, Minn. He was born June 2, 1904, in Winterset, Iowa, to Convers and Lillian (Martin) Lull. The family moved to the Holyoke area in 1906. He was raised in Holyoke and married Leona Werth on May 2, 1926. He owned and operated the Holyoke Store in the 1940s and 50s. He worked as a logger, musician and at a variety of businesses. He was a Boy Scout leader, a state of Minnesota fire foreman; a charter member of the Carlton County Sportsman Club; and an avid hunter and sportsman. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leona; one son, Gene; and a daughter, Eris Dobak. He is survived by a son, Larry (Fern) Lull of South Range; a daughter, Jackie (Jim) Arney of Foster City, Calif.; a sister, Mattie Oltman of Fairfax, Va.; 10 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, where the funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment icon services will be at Holyoke Cemetery.

Harold Leland Pearson
Harold Leland Pearson, 78, of Maple, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, in his residence in the town of Cloverland after a battle with cancer. Born in Wahoo, Neb., on March 5, 1921, to LeRoy and Ida (Milton) Pearson, he married Helga Anderson on Oct. 18, 1940, and they moved to Maple on Nov. 3, 1940. He farmed in the town of Cloverland for 33 years and worked at Berwind Coal Docks for four years. He worked in Lake Nebagamon for the Boys Camp for 12 years. He loved to work in his garden and yard. He served as town assessor, town supervisor and then as the town chairman for 25 years in Cloverland. He coached Little League baseball for Cloverland. He was on the committee to get Memorial Hospital in Superior, the Blood Bank committee and served on that board for many years. He also served many years as chairman of the Maple Co-op Store Board. He worked on the Community Food Shelf. He was on the Douglas County Board for 25 years and on the Zoning Board of Adjustment as chairman. He was the Cloverland Covenant Church chairman for 20 years and remained a faithful member. Surviving are his wife, Helga; five children, Lorene (Donald) Anderson of Maple, Larry (Marilyn) Pearson of Lake Nebagamon, Linda (Gerald) Soyring of Maple, Teresa (Daniel) Green of Isanti, Minn., and Timothy Pearson of Maple; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Dean (Betty), and Earl (Virginia), both of Poplar; a sister, Delores (David) Erickson of Superior; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Kenneth, Glen, Dale and Lyle, and one infant granddaughter, Mary Royer. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday in Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. The funeral will be at the Mission Covenant Church in Poplar on Thursday at 11 a.m. the Rev. Harold Keller and the Rev. Richard Lundgren will officiate. Interment icon will be at the Cloverland Covenant Cemetery in Cloverland. Pallbearers will be all of his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be all his friends and neighbors.

Rosemary M. Kelley
Rosemary M. Kelley, 70, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 13, 1929, in Minneapolis, she married Peter Kelley on Oct. 1, 1949, and moved to Superior, where she had resided since. She was employed as a secretary by the Catholic Diocese of Superior in its Chancery Office. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Superior 1190 and Eagles Auxiliary #80. She was a recipient of the Bishop Hammes Award. Surviving are four daughters, Peggy Kelley, Las Vegas, Nev., Laurie (Dave) Larson, Superior, Barb Kelley, Duluth, and Molly Wicklund, Superior; a son, Roger Kelley, Duluth; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, on May 2, 1988, a son, John W. Kelley, on Sept. 25, 1996, and a brother, Jack Young. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Cathedral of Christ the King. The Rev. Daniel Dahlberg and the Rev. Edward Meulemans will concelebrate the Mass. Lucy Patricia Gorud
Lucy Patricia Gorud, 90, a resident of Minong since 1917, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Hayward Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 28, 1909, in Columbus, Neb., to Charles and Emma (Kersenbrock) Cockson. She attended high school in Superior and Duluth and attended Superior Teachers College and received her one-year teaching certificate. She taught Washburn County schools at Frog Creek, Chittamo and Beaver Brook. She and her husband, Andrew, owned the Minong Texaco Station and Andy's Standard for 30 years. Survivors include two sons, Jim (Carmen) Gorud, Minong and Richard Gorud, Cloquet; one daughter, Barbara (Allen) Ikeda, Honolulu, Hawaii; seven grandchildren, Jason, Eric, James and Jessica Gorud, Karin Piper and Allison and Sally Ann Ikeda; two great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren; and a sister, Elberna Hustvet, Town of Chicog. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew, in 1969, her parents and a brother, Charles Cockson. A memorial Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. James Powers at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Minong. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home in Minong, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment icon will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Minong.

Martha E. Johnson
Martha E. Johnson, 82, of 3712 Tower Ave., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Southdale Health Care Services. She was born July 17, 1917, in Oulu, and resided in the Superior area for most of her life. She is survived by a daughter, Jean L. (Jerome) Fender, Wrenshall, Minn.; two sons, James (Darlene) Johnson of Duluth and Jeffrey R. (Mary Ann) Johnson of Superior; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Martin (Lempi) Jarvis, Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, in 1989, and by several brothers and sisters. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Downs Funeral Home, where visitation begins at 10 a.m. that day. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Rose I. Lundholm (nee Balcsik)
Rose I. Lundholm (nee Balcsik), widow of the late Harry Lundholm, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at Rockford, Ill. Born June 28, 1915, in Duluth, to Matt and Mary Balcsik of Gordon, Wis., she lived most of her life in Rockford, where she and her husband owned and operated Lundholm Manufacturing Inc. She was an active member of St. Rita's Catholic Church, St. Rita's Widows Club and The Center for Sight and Hearing Impaired. Survivors include sisters Anne Balcsik and Marge Teigen of Duluth, Frances (the late Paul) Steffan of Loves Park, Ill., and Betty (the late Carl) Reinertson of Vero Beach, Fla.; brothers George Balcsik of Duluth, Steve (late Nona) Balcsik of Gordon, Mike (Betty) Balcsik of Chicago; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters Marie (late Irving) Bessner and Barbara (late Joe) Bucsko, and brother Andrew Balcsik. The funeral Mass was held Sept. 25 at St. Rita's Church, Rockford, with burial following in Scandinavian Cemetery there.

Cathryn M. Olson-Willoughby
Cathryn M. Olson-Willoughby, 78, of Hughitt Avenue, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born on Aug. 19, 1921, and had been employed as a bakery worker by the former Piggly Wiggly Store. She was a member of United Presbyterian Church, the Salvation Army and TOPS Club of Superior. Survivors include three sons, Kenneth (Margaret) Olson, Chisago, Minn., Robert (Helen) Olson, Port Charlotte, Fla., and Edwin (Brenda) Olson, Chippewa Falls; one daughter, Shirley Nelson, Minneapolis; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Olson, Minneapolis; one step-son, Jerry (Carol) Willoughby, Duluth; two step-daughters, Kathleen (Dennis) Ebmer, Orlando, Fla., and Cheryl (Jay) Gentry, Circle Pines, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Marion Dahlstrom, Mason City, Iowa; 19 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edwin C. Olson; her second husband, Charles Willoughby; five sons, Jack A. Olson, Bill Olson, Dale Olson, Harry Olson and Dennis Olson; one grandson, Russell Olson; one great-grandson, Brandon Esberg; and one great-granddaughter, Brenda Esberg. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home and continues on Saturday from noon until the funeral at 1 p.m. with Lt. Robert Parker officiating. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Carl Olson, John Olson, Mark Olson, Tim Olson, Harry Olson, Jack Olson, Chris Olson and Shawn Olson. Honorary pallbearers will be James Olson, David Olson, Michael Olson and Bill Olson Jr.

Myrtle Russ
Myrtle Russ, 84, of 2706 N. 17th St., died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. She was born Feb. 19, 1915, in New London, Wis., the daughter of Charles A. and Frances M. Rogers. She graduated from high school in New London and married Arnold Russ on Oct. 3, 1936, in Appleton. They moved to Superior after their marriage. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church, the National Catholic Society of Foresters and volunteered as a bingo caller at St. Francis Nursing Home in the Park. She loved knitting and gardening. Surviving family members include two sons, Charles (Diana) Russ, Old Town, Maine, and Christopher (Susan) Russ, St. Peters, Mo.; two daughters, Charlene (Jack) Milroy, Superior, and Christi Russ, Duluth; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Kay Lewis, Waupaca, and Bette (Rudd) Meiklejohn, White Bear Lake, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold 'Ding' Russ, on Feb. 19, 1986, and her parents, Charles and Frances Rogers. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. on Friday at William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home with the funeral to begin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren Michael C. Russ, Michael A. Russ, Stephen Russ, Scott Milroy, Nick Milroy and Russ Milroy. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior. If friends so desire, memorials may be made to the Cathedral School Scholarship Fund in her name.

Delores Crowley
Delores Crowley, a former Superior resident, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999 in Mesa, Arizona. Born March 27, 1922 in Superior, she was a 1939 graduate of Superior Central High School. She then went to Duluth Business College and worked for many years at Westlund Hardware, which was owned by her father. Mrs. Crowley was then employed for 20 years by the School District of Superior as a secretary at the Pattison and Ericsson schools. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Marvin Crowley. She is survived by one son, Tim (Lynn) Crowley, of Pewaukee, Wis.; and three grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for November in Arizona.

Evelyn R. Fruehauf
Evelyn R. Fruehauf, 78, of 1006 E. 2nd St., died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. Born June 29, 1921, in Gordon, Wis., she was a longtime Superior resident. An alumnae of St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Ashland, she had first worked at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. She was then employed by St. Mary's Hospital in Superior and also helped part time at the former Giesen Clinic in Superior with her husband, Dr. Richard Fruehauf. She retired in 1975. She volunteered with the American Red Cross as a home nursing educator. She was an avid golfer, loved being a homemaker and enjoyed reading and quilting. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church; Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Superior #1190; a past president of the Superior Figure Skating Club and the Nemadji Women's Golf League; a member of the Douglas County Medical Auxiliary and a Ladies Elks Club member. Surviving are four daughters, Patricia Ann (Peter) Dalum, Marshfield, Mary Louise Fruehauf, Pewaukee, Jean Marie (John) Patrenets, Wisconsin Dells, and Catherine Ann (Al) Pokorny, Prior Lake, Minn.; one son, Richard Paul (Mary) Fruehauf Jr., Superior; seven grandchildren, Kevin and Kate Dalum, Mark, Beth and Steven Fruehauf, and Michael and Daniel Pokorny; two sisters, Mary Platteter of Gordon and Marge Irino, Duluth; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Richard Paul, in 1994, a son, Michael Fruehauf, in 1965, and two infant children, Timothy and Kathleen. A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. James Tobolski as celebrant. Visitation in the church will be held for one hour prior to the service. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Al Pokorny, Mark Fruehauf, John Patrenets, Peter and Kevin Dalum and Dick Holcomb. Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James P. Leffel
James P. Leffel, 59, of King, Wis., died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home in King after a battle with cancer. He was born in Superior on Oct. 27, 1939, to Gladyce and Charles Leffel of Wentworth. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Maple in 1957 and soon after left the area to pursue a career in the military. After 21 years in the Air Force as an aerial photographer, he retired as a master sergeant. He eventually settled in central Wisconsin. He received a degree in architectural drafting while stationed in Texas and a data processing degree at the former Superior Technical College. He was a talented photographer and artist who excelled in technical drawing and landscape design. He was also an avid gardener and Packers fan. He married Kristine Strauman in 1986. Together they had two daughters, Kimberly and Jennifer of Clintonville. He is also survived by his parents, Charles and Gladyce Leffel, and one sister, Anne Bridge, all of Winston, Ore.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Superior on Monday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Waldo Johnson will officiate. In case of rain, the services will be held at the same time at Pilgrim Lutheran Church-Holy Trinity in Superior. Arrangements are being handled by A.J. Holly & Sons, Ltd., Waupaca.

Arlene Sylvia Rossi
Arlene Sylvia Rossi, 61, of John Avenue, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999 in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. She was born June 29, 1938 to Earl and Sylvia (Dalman) Graves in Duluth and married Barton A. Rossi on Aug. 25, 1962. She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Duluth. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Clarence in 1979 and Kenneth in 1997. She is survived by her husband, Barton; a sister, Carol (Walter) Swanstrom of Gnesen Township; brothers, Richard (Jean) of Proctor and Gene (Candy) of Duluth; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday in the Downs Funeral Home, where the funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Hagen officiating.

Myrtle E. LaBarge
Myrtle E. LaBarge, 88, of 1800 New York Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999 in St. Francis Home in the Park. She was born Feb. 25, 1911 in Superior and had been a lifelong city resident. Mrs. LaBarge operated the concession stand in the former Post Office building on Tower Avenue for 28 years. She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior Foundation for the Blind and was a graduate of Janesville School for the Blind. Surviving are a sister, Dolores M. LaBarge, Superior; a niece, Joann Theis, of Crystal, Minn.; a nephew, Ronald Fleagle, Minneapolis; and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Cora (Brunette) LaBarge and two sisters, Goldie Fleagle and Lillian Irish. The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Cathedral of Christ the King with Fr. Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation begins Monday in the church at 10 a.m. Downs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

David T. Charbonneau
David T. Charbonneau, 52, of Superior, died Thursday September 30, in his residence. He was born in Superior, on July 28, 1947, to Melvin and Helen (Fagerlie) Charbonneau. David lived most of his life in Superior. He was graduated from the Wisconsin School for the Deaf in Delavan, Wis. He had worked for Douglas County in Maintenance for the past 32 years. He was preceded in death by a brother Nathan in 1968, his father Melvin in 1988, and his mother Helen in 1992. He is survived by brothers John (Judy) of South Range, Charles (Carol) of Red Wing, Minn.; sisters Joy (Jim) Glynn of Madison, Mary Charbonneau of Superior, Gloria (Pete) Jablonski of Superior, and Pam (Charles) Piatt of Mt. Orab, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Christ Lutheran Church. A private burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. the Rev. Gerald Presuhn will officiate. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

Wilfred Stannard
Wilfred Stannard, 70, Clough Avenue, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 at his residence. He was born July 10, 1929 in Superior. He was a lifelong Superior resident. He was employed by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department as a maintenance worker for 23 years, retiring in 1991. He was an avid Packers' fan and wrestling fan. He is survived by three sisters, Sally Giesert of Mission, S.D., Mary Bolts of Superior, Maggie (Don) Androsky of Superior; three brothers, Steve Stannard of Sarasota, Fla. and Dane Stannard and Jim Stannard, both of Superior; many nieces and nephews and special friend, Larry Quam. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Betty Stannard and two brothers, Buck and Joey. The funeral will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home with the Rev. David Dahlberg of Cathedral of Christ the King officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5-8 p.m. in the funeral home and from 1 p.m. until the service on Monday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
