Clara E. Reynolds, 85, formerly of Broadway Street in Superior, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at St. Francis Home South. She was born Sept. 23, 1913, in Freeport, Ill., and lived in Milwaukee for many years before moving to Superior in 1953. Mrs. Reynolds was owner/operator of a restaurant until retiring in 1976. She was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior. Surviving are a daughter, Rosemary (Leonard) Kadlec, Superior; two sons, William (Najeya) of Overland Park, Kan., and Herb (Sherry) of Bryantown, Md.; three grandchildren, Patty Smith, Lorie (Jim) Crawford, both of Superior, and Debbie (Mark) Graves, Tomeka, Wash.; six great-grandchildren, Alyssa and David Smith, Brian and Scott Crawford and Patti and Billy Wallace; two sisters, Ann Siegel, Beaver Dam, and Dorothy Meyer, Cudahy, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1976, her parents, William and Theresa (Shopf) Nampel, and 11 brothers and sisters. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Cathedral of Christ the King with Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant. Interment icon will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home, with wake prayers at 6 p.m. Pallbearers will be James Crawford, James Weber and Ron Miller.

Jeffrey Allen Tout, 43, Esko, Minn., died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, in Thomson Township, Minn., as a result of injuries sustained in a construction accident. He was born in Superior on Jan. 25, 1955, the son of Norman and Marion (Mackey) Tout, and was a 1973 graduate of Esko High School. He married Irene Larrivy on May 10, 1980 in Cloquet and had been the owner/operator of Jeff Tout Excavating since 1988. His love of flying lead him to obtain his private pilot’s license and he recently earned his seaplane rating. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and built his own experimental airplane. He previously built and raced his own stock cars. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Lempi Mackey. Survivors include his wife, Irene; his children, Jeffrey Jr. and Kelly, both at home; his parents, Norman and Marion Tout of Esko; a brother, Scott of Esko; a sister, Becky (Steve) Kneeland, Duluth; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Aileen and Dale Larrivy, Duluth; nieces, nephews and many other family members. Visitation was Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. memorial service in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Cloquet. Arrangements were by the Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.

Clement H. Martineau, 78, 1215 Harrison St., died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at his residence. Born Sept. 25, 1920, in Cloquet, Minn., he had been a Superior resident since 1978. Mr. Martineau was employed as a plumber in Grand Rapids, Mich., before moving to Superior. He was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King here. He is survived by two sons, William Evans, Superior, and Rick (Carol) Martineau, Minneapolis; one daughter, Stella Johnson, Duluth; two brothers, Paul (Pat) Martineau, Superior, and Wallace (Marion) Martineau, Grand Rapids, Mich.; one sister, Gloria Quam, Superior; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Myrna Evans, Grand Rapids, Mich. Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, with the funeral following there at 10 a.m. Fr. Dan Dahlberg of Cathedral of Christ the King will officiate. Pallbearers will be John Quam, Floyd Cowans, Roman Jankowski, Dennis Russell, Bill Evans and Rick Martineau. Interment icon will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Superior.

Clara (Clarabelle) Spiering, 69, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior. She is survived by her husband Gerald Spiering, sons James Spiering and family and John Spiering and family, and daughter, Nancy Spiering, all in the Superior area. In accordance with her wishes, cremation will take place. No services are being held at this time.

Alice M. Warring, 87, 1623 Pennsylvania Ave., formerly of Foxboro, died on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Superior. She was born Feb. 5, 1911, in Superior and had been a lifelong area resident. She is survived by three sons, Ronald (Marlene) Warring, Tempe, Ariz., Richard (Peggy) Warring, Superior, and Robert (Lori) Warring, Grand Forks, N.D.; two daughters, Laurian (Vern) Falk, Milwaukee, and Cheryl (Tom) Wiberg, Superior; 23 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, her twin, Christina Kriede, of Illinois, and Sally Thiele, Superior. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Stoskopf officiating. Interment icon will be in the Summit Cemetery. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Thursday in Downs Funeral Home. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Hospice. Martin Albin Stark, 99, Braham, Minn., died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at the Cambridge (Minn.) Health Care Center. He was born Sept. 18, 1899 in Kanabec County, Brunswick Township, Minn., and was raised in Coin, Minn. He was united in marriage to Agnes Kleven on Oct. 1, 1927. They made their home in the Braham area for most of their lives, where they were active members of the Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was church custodian for many years. He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Stark of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Sheryl (Jim) Jerde of Blaine, Minn., Wendy (Curtis) Bengtson of Braham, Debbie (Thomas) McGinnis of Superior, Rosalind (Ron) Lund of Spring Lake Park, Kathy (James) Haworth of Superior, Anthony Stark and Matthew Stark, both of Spring Lake Park; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Agnes, sons, Roger and Elrene "Sonny, " a grandson, Danny, many brothers and one sister. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church, where visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Rev. Richard Chronis will officiate. Pallbearers will be Tony Stark, Matthew Stark, Curt Bengtson, Ron Lund, Jim Haworth and Tom McGinnis. Interment icon will be in the Rice Lake Cemetery near Braham, Minn. Gerald R. "Jerry" McNeil, 43, of Gordon, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Gordon. He was born in Duluth and had lived in the Duluth area for most of his life. He moved to Crystal Lake in Gordon in 1996. He had been an employee of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad since 1973 and at the time of his death was general foreman of its mechanical department. He was a 1973 graduate of Moundsview High School where he had been involved in hockey, soccer and track. All of his adult life he was a talented musician, as a drummer, and played in several bands. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman and had coached youth soccer and hockey. Survivors include daughters, Lisa and Laura McNeil of Superior; son, Ryan McNeil of Gordon; his former wife, Linda; parents, Gerald and Louise McNeil of Gordon; brother, Craig McNeil of Duluth; paternal grandparents, Norman and Alice McNeil of Duluth; maternal grandfather, Arthur Dincau of Virginia, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Lori Bolander of Duluth; and special friend, Renee. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. vigil service on Thursday in Bell Brothers Chapel, Duluth. The funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Duluth, with Fr. Thomas Foster officiating. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Thelma Noruk, 87, a resident of Gordon, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. She was born April 2, 1911, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to William and Ada (Burwell) Morden, and had worked in Chicago in currency exchanges until retiring in 1971. She moved to Gordon following her retirement. She enjoyed sewing dolls and quilts and giving her crafts to friends and acquaintances. Survivors include her nephew, Bill Nutter, South Range, and special friends, Ron and Bev Kofal, Gordon. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ruth Nutter and Ferne Noruk. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Gordon Memorial Cemetery, with Rev. Duane Aslyn of Gordon Presbyterian Church officiating. Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs is handling the arrangements.

Dawn “Dovie” Amelia Villebrun, 73, Superior, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth, after a battle with cancer. She was born Aug. 17, 1925, in Mehnomen, Minn., to Romaine and Lenora (Saice) Perrault. On Dec. 9, 1942, she married Lawrence Villebrun in Mehnomen. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Duluth. She is survived by her husband Lawrence; her children, James (Georgia Atkinson) Villebrun, Victorville, Calif., Phyllis (John) Caruth, Duluth, Jean Johnson, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Lorna (Cliff Vieau) of Superior; six sisters, Glennie King and Joyce Gould, both of Eveleth, Darlene Shambow, Mehnomen, Lorraine Schoenborn, Duluth, Delores Oswaldson, Coon Rapids, and Sharon Perrault, Superior; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lawrence Villebrun; a brother, Wayne Perrault; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Antion Villebrun; and her grandparents, Frank and Mary Saice. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Fred Olson Mortuary, Duluth, and continues Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Duluth, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial. Walter H. Schmid, 83, 1426 Lee Ave., Albert Lea, Minn., formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, in Naeve Hospital, Albert Lea. He was born Jan. 6, 1915, in Ansley, Neb., the son of Jacob and Martha (Meier) Schmid. He graduated from high school in Superior and attended the former Superior State College for three years. On Feb. 11, 1950, he was united in marriage to June McGibbon in Superior. He worked for the Forestry Service for a short time before entering the military service. After his discharge from the service, he started a heating and air-conditioning business in Albert Lea, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Free Masons in Albert Lea, the VFW, the NRA and the Albert Lea Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an outdoorsman. Surviving in addition to his wife June of Albert Lea are two sons, Ronald (fiancee Terri Thompson) of Hudson, and Rick (Jan) of Hibbing; three brothers, Alfred (Dorothy) of Fairmont, Minn., Ernie (Vicky) of Hibbing and Jim (Lorraine) of Superior; sisters-in-law Lila Proffit of Superior and Leola Brownlee of Fairmont, Minn.; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Francis and William. The funeral was at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel, Albert Lea, with the Rev. Dwight Netzer officiating. Interment icon was in Hillcrest Cemetery there with military honors accorded by the Freeborn County Area Servicemen.

Adam Mizinski Jr., 92, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at St. Francis Home in the Park. He was born Nov. 22, 1905, in Superior, and had been a lifelong resident. He had worked for the Great Northern Railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1967 as the general car foreman. He and his late wife, Helen, were also co-owners of Adam's Greenhouse on Superior's East End. He had been a member of the former St. Adalbert's Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen in 1993, three brothers and one sister. Survivors include two sons, Adam III of Sacramento, Calif., and John (Carol) of Little Rock, Ark.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Andrew Ricci officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to mass. Burial will be in the family lot at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

James W. Pleski, 70, of Amery, died at the Amery Regional Medical Center in Amery on Monday, Oct. 5, 1998. He was born in South Range on May 26, 1928, the son of Leonard and Anna Pleski. He graduated from high school and spent much of the rest of his life as a construction worker. On April 30, 1971, he was united in marriage to Rita Juhnke. They had made their home in rural Amery these past several years. Surviving are his wife Rita of Amery; his sons, James, Jeff, and Jon; his daughters Jody, Jeannine, Michelle and Deborah; a brother. Robert; sisters Irene and June; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends. His parents and his brother, Charles, preceded him in death. The funeral will be at the Williamson Funeral Home in Amery on Friday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jerry Schultz officiating. Acting as casketbearers will be Doug Paulus, Myron and Romaine Elfers, Terry Gust and Todd, Ryan and Jason Pleski. Arrangements are by Williamson Funeral Home in Amery.

Dorothy "Joyce" Langston, 70, of Minnesota Avenue, Duluth, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospice. She was born in Wauwatosa to Oscar and Elna Anderson, graduated from Superior Central High School and St. Luke’s School of Nursing. She had been employed as a registered nurse for over 40 years in Minnesota, Wisconsin, California and Hawaii. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Duluth. Surviving are two sons, Michael (Janice) McNaughton of Illinois and Dana Langston, Duluth; a daughter, Dawn Kucker, Superior; a sister, Bernadine Deroo of Nixa, Mo.; five grandsons; a granddaughter; a great-grandchild; and her mother, Eva Barnes of Hammond, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Alan, in 1980; and a stepson, Timothy, in 1988. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Forest Hill Cemetery, Duluth. Astrid (Longberg) Zachau, a former Superior resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Bellevue, Wash. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bellevue First Congregational Church. Born in Sweden on Jan. 13, 1914, to Charles and Ina Longberg, she came to Superior at the age of three years. She attended Bryant School in South Superior and Superior Central High School. She married Arthur E. Zachau, grandson of Superior pioneer August Zachau, in Carlton, Minn., in 1938. In 1946, the couple moved to Bellevue. She is survived by a brother, Emmett Newman; a son, Chuck Zachau of Bellevue; two daughters, Kathie Hendricks, San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Jan Dodd, Bellingham, Wash.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, on July 21, 1998, an infant son, Richard, and a brother, Harry Longberg.

Helen (Klarstrom) Caulkett, 80, Detroit, Mich., formerly of Superior, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at a Merrillville (Ind.) nursing home. She was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Superior, to Nels and Mathilda Klarstrom. She graduated from high school in 1936 and St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1939. She continued in her nursing career after moving to Detroit. She and Harland Caulkett were married in October 1942 in Detroit. Surviving are a son, James of Springhill, Fla.; two daughters, Beth, Munster, Ind., and Mary, Farmington, Mich.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Doris (Richard) Wick, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Deloris (Howard) Matheson, Bernice (Arthur) Hanson and Florence (Kenneth) Olson, all of Superior. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. A memorial service took place Thursday in Detroit.

John Duffy, 97, of Fox Lake, Wis., a former Superior resident, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, at the Continental Manor Nursing Home in Randolph, Wis. The funeral was Tuesday in Fox Lake. Mr. Duffy was born April 12, 1901, in Menomonie, Wis. He was married to Rachel White on Aug. 20, 1934, in Indiana. While residing in Superior, he was employed as a machinist by Northern Engineering. He moved to Fox Lake in 1977. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Rachel; a niece, two nephews and cousins, including William Duffy of Superior.

Charles "Dave" D. Wilson, 78, of Dairyland, died accidentally in a fire in his home on Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998. He and his wife, Elva, were married on April 12, 1947, in Superior. They moved to Grantsburg in 1968 and lived there for 20 years, then moved to Dairyland. He is survived by his wife Elva L. Wilson of Dairyland; sons, Rodney (friend Kathy Stoll) Wilson of Dairyland, Harry (Terry) Wilson of Rice, Minn., and Thomas (Sherri) Wilson of Vernon, Fla.; a daughter, Lorraine (Jeff) Peer of Prior Lake, Minn.; sisters Mae Lillehaugen of Shoreview, Minn., and Babe (Walter) Daviduski, Lexington, Ky.; 13 grandchildren; and other family and friends. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Webster, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Charles “Bud” W. Orville, 65, 2316 Ogden Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, in St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior following a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 14, 1933, in Duluth, and was a lifelong Superior area resident. Orville graduated from the former Superior Central High School and attended the former Wisconsin State University in Superior. He and the former Patricia Stanton were married on Sept. 20, 1958, in Superior. He had been employed by Great Lakes Towing Company as a tugboat operator, retiring as captain after 35 years of service in 1992. He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and the King’s Men affiliated with Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Pat of Superior; one son, Chuck (Diane) Orville, Madison; three daughters, Marcie (Dan) Orville-Romans, Superior, Edie Harty, Superior, and Kelly (Tim) Bresina, Wausau; his mother Marion Orville, Superior; a sister, Myrna (Wils) Bergstrom, Lake Nebagamon; one granddaughter, Riley Jo Bresina, Wausau; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father Wayne Orville, a brother, Richard Orville, and a son-in-law, Patrick J. Harty. Edwin G. Richardson, 78, of Borea, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. He was born Oct. 17, 1919, and was a lifelong resident of Borea. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post No. 847. He was a retired farmer and Great Lakes seaman He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Mary (Olsen) Richardson and two brothers, Martin and Louis Richardson. Survivors include a sister, Lena Cook, Superior; a special friend, Flossie Sime, Pine City, Minn.; and nephews, Edwin Cook, Poplar, George Cook, Pattison Park area, and Ron Cook, Superior. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home where visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Pastor Waldo Johnson of Pilgrim Lutheran Church will officiate, with interment to be in Veterans Memorial Park, Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wilbert Tuomi, Maynard Wallin, Raymond Kiminski, Kelly Roy Cook, Donald Cook and Kenneth Cook.

Capt. Charles “Bud” W. Orville, 65, 2316 Ogden Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, in St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior following a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 14, 1933, in Duluth and was a lifelong Superior area resident. He graduated from the former Superior Central High School and attended the former Wisconsin State University in Superior. He and the former Patricia Stanton were married on Sept. 20, 1958, in Superior. He had been employed by Great Lakes Towing Company as a tugboat operator, retiring as captain after 35 years of service in 1992. He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and the King’s Men, affiliated with Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Pat of Superior; one son, Chuck (Diane) Orville, Madison; three daughters, Marcie (Dan) Orville-Romans, Superior, Edie Harty, Superior, and Kelly (Tim) Bresina, Wausau; his mother, Marian Orville, Superior; a sister, Myrna (Wils) Bergstrom, Lake Nebagamon; one granddaughter, Riley Jo Bresina, Wausau; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Orville, a brother, Richard Orville, and a son-in-law, Patrick J. Harty. Harry C. Sandahl, 94 of Superior, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, at St. Francis Home in the Park, Superior. He was preceded in death by four sisters, one brother, a son, Harry, and his first wife, Hilma Sandahl. He is survived by his wife, Elma of Superior; a son, Ronald (Beverly) Sandahl, Viola, Ill.; two daughters, Dorothy (Raleigh) McLean of Minneapolis and Carol (Tom) Crase of Zion, Ill.; and grandchildren, Harry L. (Peggy) Sandahl, Superior, Michael, Larry, Kathy, Roger, Randy, Frank, Suzanne and Rhonda. Visitation was Monday from 6-8 p.m., with services Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Webster. Interment icon was in the Dairyland Township Cemetery, Douglas County.

Charles "Dave" D. Wilson, 78, of Dairyland, died accidentally in a fire in his home on Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998. He and his wife, Elva, were married on April 12, 1947, in Superior. They moved to Grantsburg in 1968, living there for 20 years, then moved to Dairyland. He is survived by his wife, Elva L. Wilson of Dairyland; three sons, Rodney (friend Cathy Stoll) Wilson of Dairyland, Harry (Terry) Wilson of Rice, Minn., and Thomas (Sherri) Wilson of Vernon, Fla.; a daughter, Lorraine (Jeff) Peer of Prior Lake, Minn.; two sisters, Mae Lillehaugen of Shoreview, Minn., and Babe (Walter) Daviduski, Lexington, Ky.; 13 grandchildren, and other family and friends. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Webster, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Interment icon will be at River Hill Cemetery in the Town of Dairyland, Douglas County.
