Born on June 24, 1907, to Roy and Sophia (Hanifl)Pendleton, she was the oldest of nine children. She married William D. Niles on Oct. 3, 1931, and through that marriage they had five children. Margaret was a lifetime "North Sider" and devoted much of her life to her family and community. She attended Logan High School through the 11th grade and graduated from La Crosse (Central) High School in 1925. At that time Logan did not have a graduating class, and all North Side seniors had to commute to Central. Margaret spent most of her life as a homemaker, and after the death of her husband in 1958, with five children at home, she worked in the wedding and party catering business for many years. Margaret remained an avid Logan booster long after the graduation of her children and was proud that some of her grandchildren would years later also graduate from Logan. Margaret worked with many civic projects in La Crosse, including being active in Oktoberfest since its inception. Her last involvement was in 2001 when she was able to attend the Festmasters Ball with family members. She was the first woman Oktoberfest Torchlight Parade Marshal in 1972. She was honored with the Greater La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce "Good Citizen Award" in 1983, and received the YWCA Tribute to Outstanding Women Volunteer Services Award in 1984. She received a Parent Volunteer Award from the Blue Stars Drum Corps for her many years of service to them, she was Oktoberfest button chairman for the Blue Stars Booster Club and was second cook for the Oktoberfest Food tents. She helped raise money for cancer and mental health. She was chairman of the North Side Red Cross drive for 20 years. She campaigned for 17 years for United Fund and Wisconsin Heart Association campaign drives, city- and county-wide for five years. She volunteered for years as a Sunday evening cook in the Newman Center soup kitchen sponsored by the Cooperative Campus Ministry. She was known to make a pot of soup for $2 and feed a crowd. She made hundreds of apple pies for fund-raisers at the Roncalli Newman Center. She worked as a board member of the Emergency Food Store, an interchurch project supplying free food to the destitute. Her ability to swing into action and fill the larders was legendary. She also was past North Side chairman of the Community Chest "Special Gifts," and served on the Bicentennial Commission, State Humanities Commission, South Side Seniors and the Retired Senior Volunteers Program Board of Directors for four years. She was an original committee member for the annual Thanksgiving dinners, on which she was active until she was in her 90s and is now enjoyed by thousands annually. In 1972, she was general chairman of the 50th anniversary of the La Crosse Girl Reserves, which she had joined while in high school. Margaret was an avid bingo player, and played all over the country while visiting family members.
