May 14 2005 Norman D. Wilson, 82, of Clay, WV, passed away peacefully, May 13, 2005, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the youngest son of Loring and Della Ward Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, James (Jim P), and two sisters, Lucy Wilson and Roxie Knapp. Surviving is one sister, Sarah Bergman of Lewisville, North Carolina. He was born at Strange Creek, West Virginia, graduated from Clay County High School, and was a WWII Army Veteran, having served as a Staff Sergeant with the 45th Infantry Division, the 180th Regiment. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star for bravery at Anzio Beachhead. Upon his return home, he was employed by the B C & G Railroad, was a self employed building contractor, and owned and operated The Clay Lumber Company, retiring in 1979. He established and operated the Locust Mobile Manor. He served two terms as the Mayor of Clay. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8366 at Gauley Bridge. He was instrumental in the institution and organization of VFW Post 4419 in Clay, and served several terms as Post Commander and other various post positions. He served as the 9th District Commander, achieving ?All State Team Post Commander for 1974-1975?. He was very proud of obtaining the distinguished award of Outstanding District Commander 1978-1979?. He was married to Alice Wilson for over 51 years. Preceded in death by his wife, he leaves behind to mourn his passing, two daughters, Susie Metheney (Jerry) of Akron, OH, and Lori Burford (Lee) of Clay, WV. He also leaves two grandchildren, Sherry L. Swisher (Scott) of Akron and Michael Knopp Jr. (Sandra) of Clay. The joy of his life was his great-grandchildren, Steven Thomas Swisher of Akron, and Micah Dawn and Mariah Lee Knopp of Clay, and of course, his little dog and faithful companion, Brownie. We want to express our deepest thanks to his nephew, Dr. James Bergman, and to his attending physicians, Dr. Su, Dr. Hossino, Dr. Khalid, and especially to Kanawha Valley Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to our dad. Calling hours for friends and family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carl Wilson Funeral Home in Clay on Monday, May 16, 2005. The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at the funeral home with Minister Herbert Vance officiating, followed by burial at the Walnut Grove Cemetery.

DALZELL, SC -- David Charles Wilson, 63, husband of Sandra L. Wilson, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter, SC. Mr. Wilson formerly was a resident of Widen,WV and graduated from Widen High School in Clay County. Mr. Wilson was born in Charleston, W.Va., the son of Reva T. Wilson and the late Charles A. Wilson. He retired from the United States Air Force after 26 years of service and later served as the general manager of the Genesis Center. He was also a longtime member of the Masonic Organization, serving at Lodge No. 364. In addition to his wife and mother, Mr. Wilson is survived by one son, Leslie C. Wilson and his wife, Dana, of Ft. Hauchucha, Ariz.; two daughters, Kimberly Wilson and Donna M. Moseley and her husband, Clint, of Camden; five grandchildren, Andrew Wilson, Charlotte Wilson, Christiana Wilson, Lindsey Moseley and Warren Moseley; two brothers, Roscoe Wilson and his wife, Billie, of Rosmon, N.C., and Jack Wilson of Gassaway, W.Va. Memorial services with full military honors were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Knight officiating. Friends were received following the service and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

May 10 2005 Ronald "Ramp" Gene Samples of Hartland, WV entered into rest at his home on Friday, May 6, 2005. He was preceded in death by his father James Lee Samples . Grandson Matthew Nance, Nephew Richard Huguenot and John Samples. He is survived by his wife Carol Sue Samples of Hartland. Mother Chessie Edna Samples Brown of Hartland. Sons Mike Samples of Golden Meadow LA, and Step Son John Nance of Gallipolis OH. Daughters Patty Jenkins of Hanging Rock, OH, and Rhonda Stevens of Kits Hill, OH. Brothers Glenn Samples of Ladysmith VA, and Richard Samples of Rising Sun MD. Sister Sandra Raymond of Waynesburg OH. 6 Grandchildren Carrie Jenkins, J.D. Stevens, Lee Samples, Robbie Nance, Mark Nance and Kimberly Swain. 3 Great- Grandchildren. Special friend BB Dawson. Graveside Services will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at Clay Memorial Gardens with the minister Herb Vance officiating. Friends may call at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, Monday, May 9 from 6 to 8 pm.

May 4 2005 Terry Mitchell "Nig" Phillips, 46, of Bickmore, died May 3, 2005, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Terry is survived by his loving mother, Helen Hubbard of Bickmore; son, Joshua Seth Phillips of Bickmore; grandson, Hunter Phillips of Clay; companion, Michelle Lane Moore of Bickmore; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bobbie Kay and Denny Scott of Bickmore; Alice Miller of Bickmore; Vickie and Terry Cottrell of Canton, OH; Kathy Phillips Taylor of Bickmore and Tayma and Allen Legg of Maysel; brothers, Roger Phillips of Bickmore and Frankie Phillips of Huttonsville; three nieces and four nephews and their spouses. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by all. Funeral service will be 2 pm Friday, May 6, 2005, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister John Osborne officiating. will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Bickmore. May 3 2005 Donald David Belt, 75, of Dog Run, passed away April 30, 2005 at Laurel Nursing Home. He was born October 21, 1929, to the late Silas and Dessie Belt. He was a retired Electrician from Alum Creek Coal Company, Attended Pleasant Dale church.
Donald is survived by his wife Mildred Belt of Dog Run, sons David A Belt of Dog Run, Mike Belt of Ashland, OH, Keith Belt, of Dog Run, WV, daughters Judy Workman, of Burbank, OH, Kathy Williams of Dog Run, Karen Thomas of Maysel, Kim Mullins of Dog Run, and Stacy Dorsey of Maysel . May 1 2005 Cheryl Jean Stone Neal, 54, of Indore, entered into rest on April 29, 2005, at her home. She was born on January 1, 1951, in Lizemores to Grace Reedy Stone and the late Carl Jackson Stone. In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Ann Moore, and her brother, Hugh Stone. She was a self-employed beautician, of the Christian faith attending the Middle Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Orval Neal of Indore; sons, Steven Neal of Fayetteville and Carl Mark Neal of Indore; daughter, Rebecca Boggs of Indore; mother, Grace Stone of Quaker City, OH; brothers, Tyrus ?Jr.? Stone and Jack Stone, both of Indore; sisters, Josephine Theriault of St. Petersburg, FL, Janet Stickley of Quaker City, OH, and Doris Neal of Indore; grandchildren, Garin Osburn, Madison Neal, Savannah Boggs, Wayne Johnson, Matthew Boggs, Serena Neal, and Paige Neal.
Her greatest earthly joy came from her family and especially her grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11 am Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at Middle Creek Baptist Church, Bickmore, with Minister John Osborne officiating. will follow in the Neal Cemetery, Indore.

Donald John McLaughlin, 78, of Procious, died Thursday, April 28, 2005 at home after a long illness. He was the son of the late Ralph Newton and Stella Maud Cutlip McLaughlin. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Stewart and Wilber McLaughlin.
Don was a World War II and Korean Conflict Marine veteran. He was also a former employee of Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, employee of Marathon Industries Bridgeport and a former employee of Union Carbide. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Evelyne Eagle McLaughlin; sons Donald Bradley McLaughlin of Clay and Rodney Allen McLaughlin of Procious; daughter Ellyn Dawne McLaughlin of Annapolis, Maryland; brother James McLaughlin of St. Mary’s, WV; sisters Shonette Shearer of Phoenix, Arizona and Nell Foreman of Charleston, WV; grandchildren Miranda Rae and Caleb Ian McLaughlin. Funeral service was Saturday, April 30, 2005 at Matics Funeral Home with the Reverend Dennis Legg officiating. was in the A.J. Samples Cemetery, Procious, WV.

April 28 2005 Sarah Jane Gibson Salisbury, 79, of Clay, entered into rest on April 26, 2005, at CAMC-General Division after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Harlen and Laura Krantz Gibson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Harley Salisbury; brothers, James and Bill Gibson, and sisters, Ida Hamrick and Tessie Fitzgerald. She was a born-again believer, attended Lick Fork Baptist Church, and was a volunteer at the Christian Clothing Center, Clay. Survivors include one son, Denver Salisbury and his wife, Connie, of Newton Falls, OH; three daughters, Carolyn and husband, Alva Blankenship, of Canvas, WV; Sharon Ramsey of Bomont, Charlotte and husband, Lloyd Davis, of Maysel; sisters, Marie Irvin of Lake Placid, FL, Genneive Eagle of Ashtabula OH, and Delphia Meadows of Richwood; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 1 pm Friday, April 29, 2005, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister Alva Blankenship officiating. will follow in the Salisbury Cemetery, Enoch. April 25 2005 Joyce Cunningham 55, of Ivydale WV, entered into rest Saturday, April 23, 2005 at Hubbard Hospice House after a extended illness. Joyce was born on Sept. 16, 1949 to Arley and Rosalee Gray of Ivydale, WV. Joyce was a Member of the Ivydale United Methodist Church, she was a former Postmaster at the Ivydale Post Office. She is survived by her husband Jerry Cunningham, of Ivydale, WV. Son Brian Allen Cunningham of Charleston, WV and Daughter Sara Cunningham Chamseddin of Lodi, NJ. Sister Sharon Gray Kelley of Elkview, WV. And Brother James Arley Gray of Charleston. Funeral service will be Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at 11:00 AM at the Carl Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Minister Wilma Dobbins officiating. will follow in the Douglas Cemetery Ivydale, WV. Friends may call from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Monday, April 25, 2005 at the Carl Wilson Funeral home Chapel. April 23 2005 John D. Butler, 95, of Nebo, WV, passed away Friday, April 22, 2005 at CAMC-Memorial Division. He was born on Feb. 23, 1910, in Wallback to the late James W. Butler and Minnie Barnes Butler. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Ada Nicholas Butler; infant son and daughter, Jackie Lee and Karen Sue Butler; second wife, Halsie Dawson Tanner Butler; brothers, Verily ?Boone? Butler and Lemon Butler; and sisters, Lula Nichols and Lena Osborne. He was a self-employed automobile collision repair technician, attended Nebo Baptist Church, and was a World War II Navy Veteran. He is survived by his sister, Maggie Butler of Helena, OH; step-sons, Charles Tanner and Harold Tanner, both of Nebo, and Ronald Tanner of Big Otter; several step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. April 21 2005 Sara N. Coon, 89 of Clay, WV, died Monday, April 18, 2005 at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center, Pomeroy, Ohio. She was born on December 27, 1915 in Villanova, WV, to the late William and Belle Nottingham of Glenville, WV. She was also preceded in death by her infant son, Johnny, husband, Hoyt Lakin Coon Jr., and two brothers, Herbert and Ray Nottingham. Sara was a retired school teacher from Clay County Schools, where she had taught 37 years. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Temple in Two Run, where she also taught Sunday School and Bible School for several years. She was a member of the Clay County Retired Teachers Assoc. and a member of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Charlotte Coon of New Haven, WV, granddaughter and her husband, Stacy and Royce Bissell of New Haven; grandson, Craig Coon of Mason, WV, granddaughter-in-law, Tracy Coon of New Haven; great-granddaughters, Lakin, Logan, and Lauren Bissell and Ashley Coon, all of New Haven; sisters, Lucille Gillespie of Procious, WV, and Jean Eakle of Ft. Washington, MD; several nieces and nephews. April 20 2005 ( Belated) William Haskell Campbell, 78, of Union passed away Wednesday morning april 20 2005 at the Greenbrier VAlley Medical Center following ashort illness. He was born in Union WV May 13 1926 a son of the late William Clarence and Ella McNeil Campbell. He spent his entire life at Hillcrest, the home his father and grandfather built. He was preceeded in death by a sister, Genevieve Sarrell and three brothers, Edward, John, and James. Surviving is his wife of 58 years, June Wallace Campbell, a brother, Emerson, and sister in law of Elda Campbell , several neices including Janis Eyre Campbell Derby of Clay WV.

April 15 2005 Dora A. Tanner, 83, of Clay, entered into rest on Thursday, April 14, 2005, at CAMC-Memorial Divison. She was born on December 22, 1921, in Nitro, WV, to the late Henry and Martha Hughes. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Tanner. She was a homemaker for Mary Ward and Helen Reed. Survivors include her sons, Bobby Keener of Buffalo, Ronnie Moore of Summersville, and Bill Tanner of Hartland; daughter, Charlotte Montana of Carol Stream, IL; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 2 pm Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister Lawson Whipkey officiating. will follow in the Reed Cemetery, Clay. April 12 2005 James Cameron "J.C." Carnes, 32, of Elkview entered into rest on Saturday, April 9, 2005, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Poca Fork Rd., Elkview. He was born on June 20, 1972, in Montgomery, WV, to Karen Sue Pedro Carnes and the late Romie Dale Carnes. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jonathan Dale Carnes, and his grandfathers, Virgil Pedro and Romie Henry Carnes. He was a belt splicer for National Belt Service. Survivors include his wife; Michele Jeanette Mitchell Carnes of Clendenin; mother, Karen Sue Carnes of Elkview; children, Nicolas, Brittany, Andren, Brendan, Dale, Kassy, and Michael; sisters, Carmela Peters of Parkersburg and Tonya Carnes of Elkview; brother, John ?Bub? Carnes of Elkview; grandmothers, Edith Pedro of Montgomery and Ruth Carnes of Elkview; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 11 am Tuesday April 12, 2005 at Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview, WV. will be in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney. April 8 2005 Russell Brooks Legg, Sr., 92, of Indore entered into rest on April 6, 2005, at CAMC-Memorial Division. He was born on September 1, 1912, to Bernard Breckenridge Legg and Lilly Cline Legg. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Monica Marie Moore Legg; daughter, Carolyn Cruikshank; infant son, Frederick Wayne Legg, five brothers and four sisters.
For many years, he was owner/operator of Brooks Legg General Merchandise Store at Indore. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a deacon in the Indore Baptist Church, a master turkey hunter, and had hunted big game in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. He had also served on the Clay County Board of Education for 14 years. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-laws, Dr. R. Brooks Legg, Jr. and Diann of Lizemores and Kenneth Duane Legg, Sr. and Kathy of Indore; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and James Blaney, son-in-law, Telford Cruikshank of Big Otter; grandchildren, T. G. Cruikshank and his wife, Angie, Duane Legg, Jeanne Carson and her husband, Eric, Jonathan Legg, Sally Ann Cruikshank, Lydia Legg and James Brooks Legg; great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Paige, Sierra, and Tyler; brother, William Legg of Burford, GA; and sister, Pauline Pratt of Montgomery. Graveside service will be 1 pm Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the Cline Cemetery, Indore, with Minister Paul Stepp officiating, followed by military rites conducted by Clay VFW Post 4419. There will be no visitation. The funeral procession will leave the Indore Baptist Church at 12:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Share the Harvest, Hunters Helping the Hungry, HHH, Mountaineer Food Bank, 180 Enterprise Drive, Gassaway, WV 26624.
