George Edward Hamrick
Grassy Meadows-George Edward Hamrick, 83, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Beckley following a long illness. Born Mar. 12, 1919, at Blue Sulphur Springs, he was the son of the late Isaac Cornelius "Neil" and Effie Maye Allen Hamrick. Mr. Hamrick was a construction lineman and farmer. He was a graduate of Alderson High School and was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II in the Army Air Corps. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Cecil Cornelius, Okey Virgil, Frank Nathan, John Isaac, and James Other "Jimmy" Hamrick; and two sisters, Geneva Isabell Baker and Ina Ruby Rogers. Survivors include: sisters, Rosetta "Maye" Rohrbough of Buckhannon and Ada Catherine LaFon of Pasadena, MD; 30 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews and many great-great-nieces and nephews. Services were held July 24, at Lobban Funeral Chapel in Alderson where the Rev. Frank Jones officiated. Burial followed in the McElhenny Church Cemetery at Grassy Meadows. Nephews and great-nephews served as pallbearers.

Leonard D. Mines
Caldwell-Leonard D. Mines, 67, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2002, in the Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, after a long illness. Born Aug. 16, 1934, in Allegheny County, VA, he was the son of the late John W. and Vadar Rodgers Mines. Mr. Mines was a member of the Rhema Christian Center of Fairlea and had been a security guard at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs for 30 years. He was preceded in death by: sisters, Mary Reed, Gladys Richmond and Betty Nester; brothers, Mason, Ivan, Ed and Ernest; and one grandchild. Survivors include: his wife, Rachel B. Mines of Caldwell; three daughters, Leta Morgan and husband, Greg of White Sulphur Springs, Reta Crane and husband, Timothy of New Castle, VA and Teresa Mines of Caldwell; sisters, Dessie Lavender of Covington, VA and Hillary Bright of Roanoke, VA; brothers, Arthur Mines of Covington and Ross Mines of White Sulphur Springs; and five grandchildren. Services were held July 25, at the Rhema Christian Center on Davis Stuart Road in Fairlea where Pastor Steward Farley and Lewis Moyer officiated. Burial followed in the Adwell Cemetery, Ronceverte. Men of the church were the pallbearers. Longanacre Funeral Home in Fairlea was in charge of the arrangements.

Jarred Morton
Lewisburg-Jarred "Jerry" Morton, 66, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at the Veterans Hospital in Beckley. Born Oct. 22, 1935 at Richwood, he was the son of the late William G. and Delsie Heater Morton. Mr. Morton was a graduate of California State University. He was an Army veteran stationed in Germany. While in Germany he worked for Bendix-Philco Corporation and retired from G.T.E. Contel. Survivors include: daughters, Belinda Morton and Debbie Morton, both of Apple Valley, CA; sons, Schey and Schell Morton, both of Apple Valley, CA and Bill Morton of Greer, SC; sister, Joann Yates of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Joshua Stephens, and Jarred, Eli, Amanda and Sarah Morton. Graveside services will be held Monday, July 29, at 11 a.m. at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewis-burg with Rev. Sally Woodard officiating. There will be no visitation. Donations of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Mabel Gwinn Pittenger
Alderson-Mabel Gwinn Pittenger, 96, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness. Born Feb. 12, 1906 at Wolf Creek, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Minnie Hughes Gwinn. Mrs. Pittenger was a lifelong resident of Alderson and Wolf Creek. She was a homemaker, a former member of the Trinity Methodist Church at Wolf Creek, and a current member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Alfred D. Pittenger in 1980; two brothers, Robert H. Gwinn and Addison Gwinn; and two sisters, Pauline Gwinn Poster and Shirley Gwinn Morgan. Survivors include: daughter, Linda Pittenger Loudermilk and husband, Roy of Alderson; granddaughter, Sara Louder-milk of Follansbee; sister, Kathleen Gwinn Morgan of Covington, VA; two sisters-in-law, Jean Gwinn of Alderson and Vera Pittenger Koontz of Sun City, AZ; special friends, Mary Lee Clay and Mary Catherine Hopkins, both of Alderson; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held July 21, at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Alderson where the Rev. Dan Stemple officiated. Burial was in Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery, Alderson. Serving as pallbearers were: Bill Simmons, Echols Houchins, Lewis Merritt, Bob Holliday, Tom Housby, and Ron H. "Buzzy" Kincaid, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were: Charles L. Lobban III, Robert Lobban and Jason Lobban. Lobban Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Oliver Earl Bennett
Alderson-Oliver Earl Bennett, 72, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a short illness. Born Jan. 22, 1930 at Charleston, he was the son of the late Emma Bennett Parker. Mr. Bennett retired from White Sulphur Springs Nursery, White Sulphur Springs, after 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include: his wife of 50 years minus three months, Mary P. Cooper Bennett of Alderson; sons, James E. Bennett and wife, Aleasa of Talcott and Charles Ray Bennett and wife, Sue of Alderson; daughter, Barbara E. Bennett of Arlington, VA; grandchildren, Lori B. and Aaron C. Bennett, both of Alderson; brothers, James Campbell Bennett of Fairlea and Raymond W. Parker and wife, Grace of Dawson; sister, Margaret Hambrick and husband, Verl of Springdale; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held July 20, at the Griffith Creek Baptist Church, Alderson, where Pastor Ron Cole and Pastor Eddie Harris officiated. Burial was in the Maude Chapel Cemetery, Dawson. Pallbearers were: Carson Turner, Bill Lightner, Melvin Ryan, Robert Dalton, Perry Utterback and Aaron Bennett. Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, was in charge of the arrangements.

Linda Carol Steele
Charleston-Linda Carol Steele, 51, passed away Friday, July 19. 2002 at her home following a short illness. Born Nov. 21, 1950, at Alderson, she was the daughter of the late Dreama Boyd Phillips and Wilbur Phillips of St. Albans. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Phillips. Survivors, in addition to her father, include: sister, Becky Meadows of Chesapeake; and brothers, Danny Phillips of Charleston and Steve Phillips of St. Albans. Dr. John Fleshman Montgomery
Lewisburg-Dr. John Fleshman Montgomery, 96, passed away Friday, July 12, 2002, at Greystone. Born Oct. 19, 1905, at Grassy Meadow, he was the son of the late John Thomas Montgomery and Fannie Eliza Fleshman Montgomery. Dr. Montgomery was a well-known educator and historian. He was a member of the Old Stone Presbyterian Church where he served as ruling elder for 35 years, as well as teaching Sunday school and serving as superintendent of Sunday school. He had several writings and publications to his credit. He was the recipient of Lewis-burg’s "Outstanding Citizen of the Year" and served as president of the Lewisburg Rotary Club. He received his early education in a two-room school in Grassy Meadows, known as the Lewis School, and attended Greenbrier Military School, earning the position of Commissioned Officer. In 1924, he taught at the Lewis School before enrolling in and graduating from Hampden Sydney. He received his MA degree from the University of Southern California. He returned to Greenbrier County in 1932 and served as Principal of Williamsburg High and Elementary Schools. He received his Ph.D. from Duke University and served as principal of Lewisburg High School and Elementary School and then as Superintendent of Greenbrier County Schools. From 1954 until 1972, he served as President of Greenbrier College for Women. He married Edith Mary Rothwell in 1931, who preceded him in death in 1973. They purchased the James Withrow home, an antebellum house which was considered the grandfather of all brick homes in Lewisburg, built in 1818. He was also preceded in death by a son, John Rothwell Montgomery; four brothers, James T., A. Gray, Jenos, and Fredrick M. Montgomery; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marjorie Ford and Bess Aubel. Survivors include: his wife, Margaret Gilmer Montgomery; three daughters, Edith Montgomery Arbaugh and husband, Jim of Charlottesville, VA, Joan Montgomery of Weyers Cave, VA, Dr. Mary Montgomery Lindquist and husband, Paul of Lewisburg; son, Herbert Stanley Montgomery and wife, Katy of Lewisburg; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Montgomery of Ronce-verte; two stepdaughters, Anne Merson of Philadelphia, PA and Ellen Gilmer of New York City; a sister, Claytie Lewis Cox of Summersville; 14 grandchildren, Michael Montgomery Arbaugh, Dr. Linda Arbaugh Kinnahan, Dr. Edith Frances Arbaugh, James E. Arbaugh II, John Steven Montgomery, Bradley N. Montgomery, Douglas J. Montgomery, Mary Elizabeth Montgomery, Rebecca Montgomery Knight, Herbert Stanley Montgomery II, James Gray Montgomery, John Harper Montgomery, John Stuart Arbuckle, and Edith Montgomery Wine; three step-grandchildren, Kristen Lindquist Branan, Roald Lind-quist and Tyler Merson; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services were July 15, at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg. Burial followed at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg. Kathleen Tincher Reed Sutton
White Sulphur Springs-Kathleen "Kathie" Tincher Reed Sutton, 62, formerly of Alder-son, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2002 at her home in White Sulphur Springs. Born Mar. 10, 1940, at Eagle Branch, she was the daughter of the late Ethel Tincher. Ms. Sutton was a retired certified nursing assistant, a graduate of Alderson High School and was a member of the Griffith Creek Baptist Church, Alderson. She was preceded in death by son, Gary Wayne Coleman; and daughter, Rita Faye Coleman. Survivors include: her aunt, who raised her, Lucy Wenger of Alderson; daughters, Joye Wilson and companion, Kemble Legg, and Valerie Davis and husband, Dennis, all of White Sulphur Springs; sister, Rosie Alderson and husband, James of Alderson; four grandchildren, James Wilson of Alderson, and Ashley Wilson, Christopher Coleman and Taylor Lowe, all of White Sulphur Springs: three great-grandchildren, Devin, Katlyn and Destiny Wilson; and several nieces and nephews. Services were Thursday. July 18, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson where the Rev. Frank Jones officiated. Burial was in the Alderson Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: Dennis Davis, Fred Wilson, Jr., James Wilson, Christopher Coleman, Darrell Alderson and Robert Holcomb.

Mayme R. Green
Lewisburg-Mayme R. Green, 90, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2002 at the Brier Nursing Home. Born Feb. 27, 1912 at Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Augustus and Mattie Lee Cousins. Mrs. Green was a resident of Ronceverte for most of her life, was retired from the Sam Snead Shop at The Greenbrier and was a foster grandparent for the State of West Virginia. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ronceverte where she also served as deaconess. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry S. Green, and grandson, L. Michael Cousins. Survivors include: daughters, Marguerite Gardette of Lewis-burg and Edna Allen of Dayton, OH; brother, Stephen Cousins of Detroit, MI; six grandchildren, Valerie Banks of Miami, FL, and Gary, Dwain, Crystal, Gregory, and Pamela Allen, all of Dayton, OH; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and special friends. Services will be held Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Ronceverte with Rev. Philemon Hill officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery at Ronceverte. Visitation will be Saturday, July 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg.

Michael Adam Mauzy
Lancaster, PA-Michael Adam Mauzy, 94, passed away June 29, 2002 at Colonial Nursing Home in Lancaster, PA. Born in Pocahontas County, he was the son of Charles Walter and Lucy Hevener Mauzy. The family moved to Greenbrier County and he graduated from Williamsburg High School where he took an active part in basketball. Mr. Mauzy served one term with the CCC camps in Chico, CA and returned to Williamsburg. Later he moved to Lititz, PA, where he was employed by the Wilbur Suchard Chocolate Company until his retirement to Lancaster. He is survived by: his wife, Evelyn Geane Sutter; son, James Michael and wife, Barbara; granddaughters, Bronwynn, Brook and Elizabeth; grandson, Herb; great-granddaughters, Kendyl and Jordan; sister, Georgia Mauzy Hurd and Herman; sister-in-law, Zella Mauzy; four nephews, William T., Charles N. and Frank Mauzy, and Gregory Hurd; niece, Patty White; and a host of cousins, friends and former neighbors in Williamsburg and Lancaster. He is loved and missed by all.

Helen Shamblin Watts
Lewisburg-Helen Shamblin Watts, 91, passed away Monday. July 1, 2002 at Mountain View Nursing Home, Madison County, VA. Born Feb. 27, 1911, at Gauley Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Roy Lee Shamblin and Flora Rozella Shamblin. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jo Black-burn Watts, Jr.; and two brothers, Robert B. and Roy Everette Shamblin. Survivors include: two nieces, Bobbie Lee Shamblin Casey of Second Creek and Helen Jo Shamblin of Mt. Dora, FL; and nephew, Robert Shamblin of Pemrooke Pines, FL and his children; sister-in-law, Alice Watts Hewitt of Leawood, KS, and her children, David Payne, Bethany Roderick and John L. Hewitt and their children; brother-in-law, M. Williamson Watts and his children, Laura Watts Williamson, Caroline Watts, Jo Blackburn Watts, III, John W. Watts and Evelyn Watts Way and their children, all of Rockingham and Madison counties, VA. Graveside memorial services will be held at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg on Saturday, July 13, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Barksdale officiating. Sharon Ann Kirby McGuire
Lewisburg-Sharon Ann Kirby McGuire, 65, passed away Monday, July 8, 2002 in the Brier Nursing Home, Ronceverte, following a long illness of cancer. Born July 16, 1936 in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Ethel Eggleston Kirby. Mrs. McGuire was a lifelong resident of Lewisburg, a member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church, a Registered Nurse and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by: her parents; a sister, Mary Alice Kirby; and three brothers, Doug, Elmo and Bill Kirby. Survivors include: her husband, Perry McGuire of Lewisburg; son, William "Bill" McGuire and wife, Twylia of White Sulphur Springs; and brother, Erman Kirby of Weaverville, NC. Graveside services were held July 11, at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg, where Rev. Julian Sulgit officiated. James Robert Shaver
Lewisburg-James Robert Shaver, 54, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the home of his father and mother-in-law. Born Dec. 9, 1947 at Union, he was the son of Ada Sue Meadows Shaver of Lewisburg and the late Robert Richard Shaver. Mr. Shaver was a lifelong resident of West Virginia. He was a graduate of Union High School, the Electronics School in Montgomery, a station agent for U.S. Airways, and a 17-year veteran of the Lewisburg Fire Department. He was an avid hunter. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Richard Shaver and a brother, Gary Lane Shaver. Survivors include: his wife, Deane Bennett Shaver; his mother, Ada Sue Meadows Shaver of Lewisburg; daughter, Leah Dawn Bates of Crows, VA; sons, James Robert Shaver, Jr. of Lewisburg and Jeffrey Wayne Shaver of Salem, VA; stepson, Brian C. Zicafoose of Charlotte, NC; four brothers, Richard Wayne Shaver of Disputanta, VA, Roger Date Shaver of Rupert, Jerry Kevin Shaver of Hubbard, IA, and Grover Lewis Shaver of White Sulphur Springs; and grandchildren, Tia Danielle Scott and Nicole Renee Zicafoose. Services were held July 10, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg where Rev. Gene Sizemore and Rev. Conald Fogus officiated. Burial was in Mapledale Cemetery at White Sulphur Springs.

Patricia Ann Leech
Clintonville-Patricia Ann Leech, 43, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea after a long illness. Born January 16, 1959, at Cornstalk, she was the daughter of Harry D. and Joyce Mullins Crookshanks of Clintonville. Ms. Leech was a member of the James Chapel United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women of James Chapel. She was a retired correctional officer at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp. She was a member of the National Honor Society at Greenbrier East High School where she graduated in 1977. She was preceded in death by: a sister, Carolyn Crookshanks; paternal grandparents, Alex and Mary Crookshanks; and maternal grandparents, Roy and Fay Mullins. Survivors include: her parents, Harry D. and Joyce Mullins Crookshanks; daughter, Staci Leech at home; son, Michael Leech at home; sister, Pam Anderson and husband, Gene of Lewisburg; brothers, Dale Crook-shanks and wife, Shelbie of White Sulphur Springs and Scott Crookshanks and wife, Anita of Rainelle; and three nieces and two nephews. Services were held July 11, at the James Chapel United Methodist Church at Clinton-ville where the Rev. Vonn Sadler officiated. Burial was in Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clinton-ville. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg was in charge of the arrangements.

William Howard Shelton
Alderson-William Howard Shelton, 93, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2002 at the home of his daughter at Roseville, CA, following a long illness. Born May 29, 1919 in Alderson, he was the son of the late William G. and Margaret Mitchell Shelton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: son, William David Shelton; sister, Thelma Epperly; and three brothers, Ralph, Fred and Forrest Shelton. Mr. Shelton was a mechanic, having retired from the Ford Motor Corporation at Sacramento, CA, with 48 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include: his wife, Jean W. Shelton of Alderson; daughter, Becky Baker and husband, Allen of Roseville, CA; sister, Ruth Spruill of Springfield, VA; brother, Melvin Shelton and wife, Lola of Alderson; four grandchildren, Leigh Baker and Angela Wudell, both of Roseville, CA, Blake Baker of Citrus Heights, CA, and Stacy O’Daniel of Oklahoma City, OK; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Following cremation at his request, a memorial service was held Sunday, July 7, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, where the Rev. Sam Groves and Rev. Alvie Edwards officiated. Burial will be at a later date at the Shelton Family Cemetery, Shelton Mountain, Alderson.

Lawrence Edward Stout, Sr.
White Sulphur Springs-Lawrence Edward Stout, Sr., 68, passed away Sunday, July, 7, 2002 in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, after a short illness. Born July 25, 1933 in Marlton, NJ, he was the son of the late Harry and Thelma Perry Stout. Mr. Stout was a resident of White Sulphur Springs for 13 years and was formerly of Hainesport, NJ. He was a member of the New Covenant Sanctuary Church in Fairlea, a Korean War veteran and was a retired engineer from Dow Chemical Co. Survivors include: his wife, Jacquelyn D. Stout of White Sulphur Springs; daughter, Deana Stout of Hainesport, NJ; three sons, Lawrence E. Stout, Jr. of Hainesport, NJ, Ross Stout of Macon, GA, and Byron Stout of New Gretna, NJ; sisters, Mary Lee Mayhew of Deptford, NJ and Ella Mae Mellas of Rosman, NC; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Stout was cremated and his memorial service will be Sunday, July 14, at 11 a.m. during the morning worship service at the New Covenant Sanctuary Church on Goheen Street in Fairlea, with Pastor Susan Erskine officiating. Dolly Hester Rookstool Meads
Dover, DE-Dolly Hester Rookstool Meads, 91, formerly of Alderson and Scott Depot, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2002 at the home of her daughter in Dover, DE, where she had lived for the past seven years. Born Jan. 28, 1911 at the family home place in Palestine, she was the daughter of the late John Hunter and Minnie Hall Rookstool. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Leonard Meads in 1984; grandson, John Allen Meads in 1995; four brothers, an infant, Oakey, Lawrence, and Charles Rookstool; and four sisters; Blanche Bostic, Edna Wyand, Edythe Johnson, and Josie McCulloch. Mrs. Meads enjoyed life as a homemaker and as a caregiver, helping with the care of family, friends, and neighbors. She always said laughter was the best medicine. During World War II, she worked in the rayon plant at Covington, VA. She was a member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, and a member of the Women of the Moose at St. Albans. She loved people and telling a good joke. She also loved gardening, working in her yard, country music, dancing, and nature, especially birds and squirrels. Survivors include: son, Billy Joe Meads and wife, Edna of New Haven; daughters, Rebecca Jane Boltz and husband, Jippy of Richmond, VA, and Peggy J. Boulter and husband, Lloyd of Dover, DE; seven grandchildren, Janet Lee McNickle and Donna Jo Plants both of Laurinburg, NC, Cheryl Boltz of Richmond, VA, Tony Boltz of King William, VA, Lloyd Boulter, Jr. of Odessa, DE, Lisa Domfort of Hartly, DE, and Lori Boulter of Dover, DE; seven great-grandchildren, Justin and Byron McNickle, Jessica and David Kirwin, Chloe Fulcher, James Domfort and Zachary Boulter. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 6, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, where the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiated. Burial was in the Talcott Cemetery, Talcott. Doc W. Waugh, Jr.
Ronceverte-Doc W. Waugh, Jr., 68, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2002 in the Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston, after a long illness. Born Nov. 2, 1933 in Sebert, he was the son of the late Doc W. and Mary Thomas Waugh, Sr. Mr. Waugh was a lifelong resident of Ronceverte, a member of the Ronceverte Baptist Church and was a self-employed flooring installer. He was preceded in death by: his parents; two sisters, C. Sue Wiseman and Virginia Goodall; and a brother, Alfred "Bud" Waugh. Survivors include: his wife, Betty R. White Sulphur Springs-Helen Mae Knapp, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2002, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea after an extended illness. Born Oct. 14, 1925, at War she was the daughter of the late Henry Elliot and Larmie Harris Spence. Mrs. Knapp was a retired maid at The Greenbrier and a member of the Greenbrier Valley Baptist Church on Rt. 92 near White Sulphur Springs. She was preceded in death by: her first husband, James Hamp Hoke; a sister, Lucille Hoke; and two brothers, Dwight and James Spence. Survivors include: her husband, Harrison A. Knapp at home; four daughters, Melva Ramsey and husband, Darrell, Violet Ramsey and husband, Stoney, and Lisa Hoke, all of White Sulphur Springs, and Lydia Hoke of Hot Springs, VA; son, Larry Hoke and wife, Linda, of White Sulphur Springs; stepson, Harrison A. Knapp, Jr. of Dayton, OH; sister, Violet D. Kirk of Covington, VA; brothers, Donald Spence of Lindside and Danny Spence of Greenville; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Arthur Gerald Sturgell
Fredericksburg, VA-Arthur Gerald Sturgell, 72, formerly of Frankford, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. Born Jan. 31, 1930 in Pocahontas County, he was the son of the late Bennie and Ethel Blankenship Sturgell. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Savanna Anderson and sister, Donna Belle Walker. Mr. Sturgell was a retired plumber and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include: his companion of 25 years, Barbara Davis of Fredericksburg; daughter, Tina of New York; sons, Nathan of Maryland and Benny and Sidney of Frankford; sisters, Irene Dotson of Lebanon, TN, Lucille Blankenship of Cherryville, NC, Marie Hilde-brand and Betty Boyd of Richmond, VA; brothers, Cecil of Woodstock, VA, Darrell of Cen-terville, VA, Curtis of Tampa, FL, Herman of Ronceverte, and Carlton of Frankford; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held July 5, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg where Rev. Lula Collins officiated. Burial followed in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg.

Marvis Nutter Wilkerson Pirro
Lewisburg-Marvis Nutter Wilkerson Pirro passed away in her home at Greystone Landing June 29, 2002 after a long illness. She was born in White Sulphur Springs in 1921. Mrs. Pirro moved to Lewis-burg after marrying James M. Wilkerson, owner of Liberty Electric Company. After World War II, she went to work for the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company (now Verizon Communications) where she had a successful career and retired as a management employee in 1981. In 1967, she married Vincent Pirro, music director for The Greenbrier, who preceded her in death. She loved music and also enjoyed reading, gardening, and, in her retirement years, volunteer work. She has been a member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church since 1941. She was an active member while still in good health, serving at different times as Methodist Youth Fellowship Leader, Chairman and Program Director of the Guild, Circle Chairman, and board member. She was a member of the Greenbrier Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary and served as its President for two years, a member of the Greenbrier County Historical Society, and an active member of the Greenbrier County Democratic Women’s Club. She also served as a Red Cross volunteer at the State Fair of West Virginia. She is survived by: daughter, Linda W. Turner and son-in-law, T. M. Turner of Sedona, AZ; and grandson, John P. McKune, Jr. and wife, Margaret of Golden, CO. Entombment services will be Saturday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at Rosewood Cemetery with the Rev. Ross Evans officiating. Henry M. Connell
Ronceverte-Henry M. Connell, 82, passed away in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea Tuesday, July 2, 2002 following a short illness. Born at Ronceverte Mar. 27, 1920, he was the son of the late Heber and Annie Sites Connell. Mr. Connell was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church at Sinks Grove where he served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent and served on various committees. A prominent Greenbrier County farmer, he held membership in the Greenbrier County Farm Bureau, West Virginia Cattlemen’s Association, and The National Cattlemen’s Association. He is survived by: his wife Ella McCraw Connell of Ronceverte; stepdaughter Pat Dore and husband, Michael and stepson Jim VanDyke and wife, Pat, all of Sinks Grove; six grandchildren, Debbie Gentry and husband, Tommy of Craig Springs, VA, Harvey Christy and wife, Cristy of Spring Field, Michael Christy and wife, Jenne of Lewisburg, Eugene Christy and wife, Elizabeth of Front Royal, VA, Chris VanDyke and wife, Lisa of Lewisburg, and Dietra Ashman and husband, Derek of Oak Grove, KY; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held July 5 at the Memorial Chapel of McCraw Funeral Home where Rev. Deana Armstrong officiated. Burial followed in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewis-burg. Mary A. Buesinger
Lewisburg-Mary A. Buesinger, 90, passed away at Greystone Landing, Lewisburg, Wednesday, July 3, 2002 following a long illness. Born Oct. 26, 1911, at Lewis-burg, she was the daughter of the late Houston and Lula McLaughlin Arbuckle. Mrs. Buesinger was a member of the Clifton Presbyterian Church. She attended Concord College, was an avid golfer and held membership in the Elks Women’s Golf Club. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Floyd Buesinger in 1990; brother, Rev. J.D. Arbuckle; and two sisters, Anna Arbuckle and Julia Legg. She is survived by a son, Robert L. Buesinger of Troutville, VA. Funeral services were held July 5, at Clifton Presbyterian Church where Rev. Nettie Schumaker Martin
Covington, VA-Nettie Schumaker Martin, 84, formerly of Sweet Chalybeate, VA, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2002, at Alleghany Regional Hospital. Born Sept. 29, 1917 at Sweet Springs, she was the daughter of the late Henry Tom and Lettie Mahan Schumaker. Mrs. Martin was a resident of this area all of her life, attended Shiloh Methodist Church during her early years, attended Dunlap Christian Church for many years and currently attended First Christian Church. She was employed by the Alleghany County school system as a cafeteria worker in Callaghan Elementary School and the former Hunter School. She was very fond of gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest M. Martin, in 1982; two brothers, Cody Schumaker and Hunter Schumaker; and two sisters, Clarice S. Shaffer and Virginia S. Daugherty. Survivors include: son, Bob Martin of White Sulphur Springs; daughters, Sally Martin Mann of Clifton Forge, VA, and Sue Martin Burns of Covington, VA; three brothers, Ben Schumaker and James Schumaker, both of Sweet Springs, and Lewis Schumaker of Covington, VA; sister, Pauline Baker of Sweet Springs; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services were held June 24, at the chapel of Loving Funeral Home, Covington, VA, where the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiated. Interment followed at Sweet Chalybeate Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ernie Palmer, David Palmer, David Wickline, David Schumaker, Tommy Schumaker, D.J. Dowdy, Neil Honaker and Bob Carter. Alternate pallbearers were Andy Carter. Lottie Edith Stacy Christian
Renick-Lottie Edith Stacy Christian, 98, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2002, at her home in Renick following an extended illness. Born Mar. 25, 1904 at Renick, she was the daughter of the late Franklin King and Levina Clutter Stacy. Mrs. Christian was a lifelong resident of Renick, was a member of the Rock Camp Community Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Christian, in 1956. Survivors include: daughters, Madeline McMillion of Renick, Jewell Dolan of Lewisburg, Kathleen Snell and Irlene Stegner, both of York, PA, and Christine Ann Christian of Renick; son, Frank G. Christian of Lewisburg; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Services were held June 25, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg, where the Rev. Lloyd Arbogast, the Rev. Robert Hefner and the Rev. Dexter Taylor officiated. Burial was at Morningside Cemetery, Renick.

Macie Glenna Morgan
Ronceverte-Macie Glenna Morgan, 95, passed away on Monday morning June 24, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. Born Sept. 19, 1906, at Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Martha Kessinger Morgan. Mrs. Morgan was a lifelong resident of Ronceverte, a homemaker, and a member of the Greenbrier Regular Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Ote Morgan; a son, Charles "Buddy" Morgan; one sister; and seven brothers. Survivors include: three daughters, Glenna Matthews and husband, Frank, of Dandridge, TN, Relda Surgeon and husband, Paul, of Eustis, FL, and Jeannie Nickell and husband, Jim, of Pickaway; five sons, Eddie Morgan and wife, Arbutus, of Salem, VA, Bob Morgan and wife, Susie, Clarence Morgan and wife, Drema, Mark Morgan and wife, Betty, all of Ronceverte, and William Morgan and wife, Angie, of Danville, VA; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild. Services were held June 26, at the Greenbrier Regular Baptist Church, where Pastor Tim Dillon and Pastor Sterling Morgan officiated. Burial was at Morgan Cemetery. Caldwell-Gertrude Lee Martin, 92, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2002, in Knox Community Hospital, Mt. Vernon, OH, after a short illness. Born Sept. 3, 1909, in Red Sulphur Springs, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Lucinda Long Helvey. Mrs. Martin had been a resident of Organ Cave for 25 years and was formerly of Gauley Bridge. She was a member of the Lewisburg Seventh Day Adventist Church, a retired nurse at the Gauley Bridge Clinic and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by: her stepmother, Elizabeth Helvey; husbands, Gary Wine-brimmer in 1927, Tom Henry Erskine in 1955, and Robert L. Martin in 1964; daughters, Norma Jean Erskine and Marjorie Reed and husband, Lawrence; four sisters, Maggie Glove, Gladys Bland, Ruby Nickell and Ruth McClung; three brothers, Frank, Leonard, and Woodrow Helvey; and three grandchildren. Survivors include: daughters, Drusilla Morgan and husband, Jack, of Florence, SC, and Brenda Hypes and husband. Glen of Newark, OH; sons, Shuler Erskine and wife, Joanne of Mt. Donald E. Wease
Harrisonburg, VA-Donald E. Wease, 52, passed away Monday, June 17, 2002 at Staun-ton, VA. Born Apr. 30, 1950 at Ronce-verte, he was the son of Robert E. and Betty C. Wease. Mr. Wease was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include: his father; two daughters, Lori and Kristi Wease; and a sister, Polly W. Faircloth, all of Staunton, VA. Lawrence Creigh Nickell
Fairlea-Lawrence Creigh Nickell, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at The Brier Nursing Home in Ronceverte. Born Sept. 20, 1916 at Gauley Bridge, he was the son of the late Homer H. and Nina Woodson Nickell. Mr. Nickell was a graduate of Greenbrier High School in Ron-ceverte and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL. He was the founder of Appalachian Electronic Instruments, Inc., a member and elder of the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church, and a past member and president of the Greenbrier County Board of Education. He was an inventor and holder of several patents. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Sizemore and Thelma Sizemore, and a nephew, Dennis Sizemore. Survivors include: his wife, Marie G. Nickell; daughters, Carolyn Warren and husband, Joe of Lewisburg and Connie Bossen and husband, Elliot of Durham, NC; son, Larry Nickell and wife, Donna of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Scott Nickell of Mount Joy, PA, Sara Nickell of Littleton, CO, Quinn Moore and wife, Viji of Ann Arbor, MI, Kevin Moore of Columbia, SC, Nikki Warren and Leslie Warren, both of Durham, NC, and John D. Warren of Lewisburg; step-grandchildren, Marisa, Erica and Alana Bossen, all of Warren, NJ; great-grandchild, Claire Nickell of Charlottesville, VA; four nieces; and nine nephews. Charles Edward Dickson, Jr.
Vista, CA-Charles Edward Dickson, Jr., 76, of Vista and Baldwin Park, suburbs of Los Angeles, CA, formerly of White Sulphur Springs (in his younger years), passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at his home in Vista. Born Dec. 8, 1925 in West Palm Beach, FL, he was the son of the late Louise Eary and Charles Edward Dickson, Sr. Mr. Dickson was a resident of California for 50 years. He was a retired teacher, counselor and administrator with the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District with 38 years service. He served in the Navy during World War II, was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Vista, and a member of North County Parkinson's Support Group, California Retired Teachers Association and the Whittier College Alumni Association. He was preceded in death in 2000 by a sister, Helen Louise Anderson, who lived in West Covina, also a suburb of Los Angeles. Survivors are: his wife of 56 years, Patricia M. Dickson at home; son, Howard Craig Dickson of San Diego, CA; and daughter, Celeste J. Avalon of Boulder, CO; grandchildren, Kim Kristina Davis and Scott David Woodyard; and two great-grandchildren. Garnette H. Watson
White Sulphur Springs-Garnette H. Watson, 93, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2002 at White Sulphur Springs Family Care Center after an extended illness. She was born Apr. 5, 1909 at Mammoth. Mrs. Watson was a member of the Church of God on Willow Street in White Sulphur Springs. She was a retired Practical Nurse and Midwife. Her husband, Earl Watson, preceded her in death in 1960. She was the last survivor in her family, having four brothers and eight sisters who preceded her in death. Survivors include: son, Jack Hudnall and wife, Suzie of Crows, VA; four grandchildren, Jack Hudnall and wife, Bobby, Cindy Wickline and husband, Randy, and Harry Hudnall, all of White Sulphur Springs, and Mark Hudnall and wife, Karin of Chesterfield, MI; five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Fairlea-Caroline V. Carlisle, 94, passed away Monday, June 17, 2002, in the Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home, Fairlea, after a long illness. Born Apr. 13, 1908 in Fort Spring, she was the daughter of the late William P. and Virginia A. Micheline Diem. Mrs. Carlisle was a resident of Fairlea for 52 years and was formerly of Fort Spring, a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Fort Spring, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, nursing aide at the Greenbrier Valley Hospital, Ronceverte and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Dwight Merle Carlisle; son, Clarence M. Carlisle; sisters, Minnie Diem, Mamie Kirby and Alice Johnson; brothers, William, Fredrick, Frank and Alfred Diem; and grandson, Robert M. Carlisle, Jr. Survivors include: son, Robert M. Carlisle, Sr., and wife, Inez of Nellysford, VA; grandsons, Dwight Carlisle of Richmond, VA and Steward Carlisle of Farmsville, VA; great-grandchildren, Patricia and Cole Carlisle; and several nieces and nephews. Berlin B. Judy
Williamsburg-Berlin B. Judy, 89, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Springfield Care Center, Lindside. Born Dec. 6, 1912 at Cornstalk, he was the son of the late Elmer H. and Leafy W. Hinkle Judy. Mr. Judy was a lifelong resident of Cornstalk and Williamsburg, a carpenter for the Greenbrier County Board of Education for 31 years, a member of the Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, an honorary member of the Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department, and was a charter member of Williamsburg Ruritan Club. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Ruth Allyne Scott Judy, on Feb. 24, 2001; and four brothers, Lansing, Pearl, Sheldon and Arden Judy. Survivors include: three sons, Marshall Judy and wife, Loretta of Lindside, Darrell "Lefty" Judy and wife, Nora of Williamsburg, and Jerry Judy and wife, Nadine of Covington; sister, Nell Young of Bolivia, NC; grandchildren, Aaron Judy and wife, Debbie, Debra Sizemore and husband, Tucker, and John Judy and wife, Lorena; great-grandchildren, Channing Judy, Christopher Sizemore, Devin Judy, Tyler Judy, Ikey Judy and Eli Judy; and step-great-grandchildren, Joey Adkins and Justin Adkins. Robie Robert Kast
Lewisburg-Robie Robert "Red" Kast, 68, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center after a long illness, Born June 16, 1933 at Hinton, he was the son of the late John Lloyd and Martha Ellen Gill Kast. Mr. Kast had been a resident of Lewisburg for two years and was formerly of Hinton where he was a member of First Baptist Church in Hinton. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was a retired machinist. Survivors include: six daughters, Robin Hatfield of Maryland, Sharon Kast, Stephanie Royster-Bennet, Rebecca lnfante, Cynthia Payne and Deloris Fenne, all of Richmond, VA; son, Butch Kast of Mechanicsville, VA; two sisters, Georgie Bowman of Lenoir, NC, and Margie Kast of Spotsylvania, VA; brother, Jesse Franklin Kast, Sr. of Fairlea; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A memorial service was held June 9 at the Longanacre Funeral Home, Fort Spring, where the Rev. Bob Ratliff officiated. The body has been cremated.

Monongahela, PA-Rosa "Brownie" Hatton, 86, formerly of Neola, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2002 after an extended illness. Born Sept. 23, 1915 at Trainer, she was a daughter of the late William Opha and Rosa Jeffries Trainer. Mrs. Hatton was a homemaker and a member of the May Chapel United Methodist Church at Neola. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Denny Hatton in 1973; son, Thomas Hatton; three sisters, Anna Harmon, Etta Cole and Elizabeth Martin; and three brothers, Ray, Ralph and Robert Trainer. Survivors include: son, Denny M. Born Sept. 28, 1931 at Alderson, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Glenna Lawhorn Brooks. Mrs. Terry had been a resident of White Sulphur Springs for three years and was formerly of Fayetteville. She was a member of the Church of God and a homemaker.
