NETTIE -- The Rev. Dured Sheldon Smith, 64, of Nettie died Monday, May 11, 1998, in Autumn Way Personal Care Home, Rupert, after a long illness. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of Nettie Baptist Church, a graduate of Rupert High School and the University of Charleston, attended Glenville State College and West Virginia State College, did graduate work at West Virginia University, was a retired Greenbrier County schoolteacher, a former Methodist minister and a former employee of FMC Corp. and Blackwater Falls State Park. Surviving: wife, Hilda O'Dell Smith; daughter, Alma Collins of Nettie; son, David Allen Smith of Nettie; father, Jennings Smith of Summersville; sisters, Neysa Breedlove of Summersville, June Williams of Manassas Park, Va.; two grandsons. ALDERSON -- Retired Lt. Col. Karl Kenneth Taylor, 69, of Alderson died Sunday, May 10, 1998, in Columbia Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a long illness. He was a retired Army Signal Corps lieutenant colonel with 22 years of service, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars, and was a recipient of the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, Korean Service medal, Armed Forces reserve medal, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a retired Civil Service employee serving on the special task force group for HICOM, USARPAC, a graduate of Alderson High School, attended the University of Maryland and was a member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, Elks Lodge 1758, Lewisburg and Tri-County Memorial VFW Post 6723, Alderson. Surviving: wife, Dorothy Craft Taylor; son, Greg of Alderson; daughters, Carol Brown of Alderson, Trish Vallandingham of Organ Cave; brothers, Emmett Lewis Taylor of Groveton, Ga., Alvin Keith Taylor of New Ellenton, S.C.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. VanKirk of Port St. Lucie, after a long illness. He was a self-employed salesman, a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and a Christian. Also surviving: daughter, Valerie West of Salem, Ore.; sons, William H. "Chip" VanKirk Jr. of St. James, Fla., Donald VanKirk of Wichita Falls, Texas; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
