He was a native of Logan, W.Va., a graduate of Logan High School and was a former cashier and vice president at the National Bank of Logan with 19 years' service. He was retired from Smith Transfer Company, a member of the Teamsters Local 175, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 202, Charleston, a Baptist and a Marine veteran of World War II. He was a 35 year resident of Browns Creek.
