Hollie E. Gillispie, 85, of Alum Creek died Sunday, May 17, 1998, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was a retired insulator from Union Carbide with 30 years of service, a lifelong resident of Kanawha County and an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving: wife, Adylene Gillispie; daughters, Vondena Renner of Alum Creek, Sally Battista of Fort Lauderdale, Fla; sisters, Lillian Smith of Charleston, Virginia Asbury of Ripley, Nina McKenzie of Princeton; brother, Rondal Gillispie of Madison; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Russell Pete Ashworth officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Richwood, a retired teacher and attended Davis-Elkins and West Virginia Wesleyan colleges. Surviving: son, John Ernest Rader of Richwood. Alexander G. Rice Jr.
WESLACO, Texas -- Alexander Gibbs Rice Jr., 81, of Weslaco died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, in Texas. He was a native of Randolph County, Va., a graduate of Dunbar (W.Va.) High School, received his bachelor's degree from the College of Engineering and Commerce, University of Cincinnati, and was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as the engineering officer on the USS Knox. He was president of the public accounting firm of Rice-Rice Inc., Dunbar, with 30 years of service, was former president of the West Virginia Accounting Association, a retired lieutenant commander from the Naval Reserve with 27 years of service, a Boy Scout leader and Council Explorer Advisor, and a member and former treasurer of Highlawn Presbyterian Church, St. Albans, W.Va. Surviving: wife, Mary Ellen Rice; son, James K. Rice of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter, Sally Lawrence of San Clemente, Calif; four grandchildren. Memorial service will be 6 p.m. Saturday at Highlawn Presbyterian Church. Friends may call one hour prior to service at the church.

HAMLIN -- Kermit Searls, 88, of Hamlin died Sunday, May 17, 1998, in Heritage Manor, Huntington. He retired from West Virginia-American Water Co. Surviving: wife, Ada Beheler Searls; daughter, Charlotte Bays of Flint, Mich.; son, Donald Searls of Hamlin; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. She was of the Byzantine Catholic faith and was a former employee of Morgan Shirt Factory. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Carol A. Swartz Smith, 40, of Washington, formerly of Charleston, W.Va., was found dead Monday, May 11, 1998, at home, said a spokesman for the Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Police Department. Swartz died of multiple stab wounds. She was a graduate of Charleston High School and West Virginia State College, received her master's degree from George Washington University, was a special education teacher at Kenilworth School, Washington, and was a Sunday School teacher at the Church of Our Savior, Washington. Surviving: daughters, Elizabeth and Victoria Smith of Washington; mother, Barbara Knight of Charleston; brother, Robert Swartz of Charleston. Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Charleston, with the Rev. Karl Ruttan officiating. Friends may call after the service at the church.
