He was a veteran of World War II, on active duty with the Selective Service System, acting Chief of Benefits for the West Virginia Department of Employment Security, Supervisor of Armories for the West Virginia State Armory Board, former president of the Army-Navy Club, Post Commander of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, member of the West Virginia National Guard Association, former president of the Charleston Federal Credit Union, member of the Exchange Club of Charleston. He attended Potomac State College, Morris Harvey College and graduated from West Virginia University. Surviving: son, John B. Martin Jr of Miami, Fla. Service date will be announced. INDIANAPOLIS -- Lt. Col. Frederic L. Merchant Jr., 64, of Indianapolis died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997. He was a retired Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a Bronze Star recipient, graduated cum laude from West Virginia State College, received his master's degree in business administration from Indiana University, South Bend, was retired director of internal auditing from Wishard Memorial Hospital, Indianapolis, and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and the American Legion. Surviving: wife, Juanita Griggs Merchant; sons, Frederic L.
