He was a native of South Charleston, W.Va., a superintendent with Barnwell School District 19, former principal and coach at Blackville-Hilda High School, a graduate of Anderson College and Tennessee State University, received his master's degree from South Carolina State University, was former president of the South Carolina High School League, president of the Blackville Jaycees, served on the board of the Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce, was a member of Barnwell First Baptist Church and was a veteran of the South Carolina National Guard.
