E. James "Jimmy" Gillespie
WEBSTER SPRINGS - E. James "Jimmy" Gillespie, 75, of Webster Springs died June 3, 2002, at his residence after an extended illness. Born Feb. 15, 1927, in Webster Springs, he was the son of the late Clarence W. and Bertha Baughman Gillespie. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Paul Felix Gillespie; and a sister, Louise Varney. A retired local businessman, Mr. Gillespie was owner of Jimmy's Exxon and E. James Gillespie Fuel Oil Distributors, Cherry Falls, for 33 years. He was a former member of the Webster Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the board of directors of Webster County National Bank and a former city councilman. He was a lifetime member of the WVU Alumni Association and VFW Post 3738. He was a former employee of J.C. Baker & Sons and McCourt Motor Company. A Navy veteran of World War II serving on the USS Tennessee, he was in the battle of Iwo Jima on March 16-19, 1945, and the battle of Okinawa on March 26, 1945. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Webster Springs. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Nancy Cool Gillespie of Webster Springs; brothers and a sister-in-law, E. Bernard and Aretta Gillespie of Cincinnatti, Ohio, Dr. David Gillespie of Frostburg, Md.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Dean Hufford of Pulaski, Va., Lucille McCoy of Elyria, Ohio, Sammie and Bob Allman of Buckhannon, Caroline and Melvin Cochran of Webster Springs; sister-in-law, Betty McGinty of Clearwater, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Rosemary and Jeff Bean and Debbie Blake; caregivers, Flecia Brake, Brenda Collins, Lana Cutright and Jamie McIe. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 7, at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, with the Rev. Nelson Harris and the Rev. Rich Demastus officiating. Jack Alsop will serve as eulogist. Robert Dewayne "R.D." Grooms
Robert Dewayne "R.D." Grooms, 47, of Rand died peacefully June 1, 2002, at his home after a short illness. He was born Dec. 2, 1954, in Handley, a son of Gertrude E. Grooms Dabbs of Charleston. Also surviving is his stepfather, Ernest Beasley of Charleston. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard and Cora Grooms; sister-in-law, Suzanne Thurman; and brother-in-law, Rex C. Holdren. He wa a senior operations technician for Union Carbide/Dow Chemical for 28 years and was of the Christian faith. In addition to his mother and stepfather, he is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Colleen Holdren Grooms of Rand; one daughter, Rinda Grooms of Morgantown; one son, Richard "R.D." Grooms of Rand; four sisters, Gwen Martin and Cencille Green, both of St. Albans, Brenda Byrd of Oxford, Ohio, Judy Dabbs of Charleston; and a host of many relatives, friends and special co-workers at Dow Chemical. Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at Pryor Funeral Home, East Bank, with the Rev. Tony Saunders and the Rev. William Kinney officiating. SCOTT DEPOT - H. W. "Herb" Hanes, 85, of Scott Depot died June 3, 2002, in Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville. He was retired from the Greenbank National Observatory, a former employee of the Rubber Plant and spent 36 months in the Panama Canal. He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Charleston. Surviving are his wife, Margaret L. Ervin Hanes; stepson, W. Frank Fuller of St. Albans; stepdaughter and husband, Shirley and Dr. Charles White of Williamstown; sister, Hilda Summerfield of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, Felicia Garretson, Michelle Smith, Regina Minchello and Brandon White; nephews, Stanley, Doug, Ronald and Donald Summerfield. Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Pastor Harold Wightman officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Celesta Virginia "Ginny" Heasley
Celesta Virginia "Ginny" Heasley, 80, of Charleston passed away June 2, 2002, at the home of her daughter following a year-long battle with cancer. A longtime waitress at family-owned Schrader's Restaurant at Five Corners on Charleston's West Side, Ginny was very active in Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church, of which she was a 55-year member. She served as a Sunday school teacher and as a participant in the Women of Bream. Born and raised in Beaver, Ohio, Ginny graduated from Beaver High School in 1939 and attended Ohio University. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob," in 1979. Ginny is survived by her daughter and husband, Krista and Billy Kerns of Charleston; her son and wife, Gill and Marg Heasley of South Charleston; her grandchildren, Lori and Kelly Kerns; her stepgrandchildren, Kari Ann Kerns, Michael Herald and wife, Alicia, ReBecca Sizemore and husband, Chris; her great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Paige Bequette; her stepgreat-grandchildren, Samuel Herald and Trentan Sizemore; a multitude of loving friends and acquaintances. A memorial service and celebration of Genny's life will be 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church, Charleston. Interment will be in Mount Olive Cemetery, Parkersburg, at a later date. A reception will follow immediately after the service at the church. FORT MILL, S.C. - Quinn Morton Hudson, 87, of Fort Mill, S.C., died June 4, 2002, at his residence. A former resident of Hernshaw, W.Va., Mr. Hudson was a son of the late Anderson and Alice Jarrell Hudson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Melvin Hudson. He was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Carolinas Cornerstone Church. Surviving are one son, William Hudson of Hernshaw, W.Va.; one daughter, Kay Arden of Fort Mill, S.C.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Emogene Dolin Jones
MILTON - Emogene Dolin Jones, 88, of Milton went home to be with the Lord June 3, 2002. She was born May 23, 1914, in Ardel, a daughter of the late Bernie Hazelett and Gertie Hazelett Newman. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Clifton Dolin; her second husband, Chalmer Jones; two daughters, Mrs. Jane Davis and Mrs. Lois Hagan; one son, David Dolin; and one grandson, Steve Ward. She was former owner and operator of Jones' Restaurant and an active member of the Milton community. She was a long-time employee of Morris Memorial Crippled Children's Hospital and a member of Milton Baptist Church. She was an avid herb gardener. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Doug Ward of St. Albans, June and John Bradbury of Culloden; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Lois Dolin of Huntington; one sister, Mrs. Glenna Adkins of Huntington; 12 grandchildren, Melinda Wills, Lisa Anness, Paul Davis, Chris Davis, Joy Kamakowiwoole, Jana Hagan, Tina Ellison, Tricia Knapp, Carrie Dolin, Danielle Bane, Monica Adkins and Jimmy Bradbury; nine great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Tom Young officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Memorial Park. ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Bonnie C. Levy, 82, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., died June 3, 2002. Born in Clarksburg, W.Va., she moved to Altamonte Springs in 1970. She was of the Jewish faith. She was a former member of Temple Israel and B'Nai Jacob Synagogue in Charleston, W.Va., the Hadassah and the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a legal administrator and had served as a first leiutenant in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She is survived by one son, Michael S. Levy of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Sara Ellin and Deborah A. Levy, both of Winter Park, Fla.; sister, Elinore Silverberg of Charleston, W.Va.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild. She graduated from Dunbar High School and was a member of the Nitro Woman's Club. She was the widow of the late John W. Merical II. BERKELEY SPRINGS - Estella Caroline Morris, 89, of Berkeley Springs, formerly of Summersville, died June 4, 2002, at her home. Born Aug. 29, 1912, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Elizabeth McCracken Rogers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George William Morris, in 1998; and her brother, the Rev. Charles A. Rogers, in 1997. She was a retired restaurant employee and a member of Faith Baptist Church, Berkeley Springs. CHESAPEAKE, Ohio - Clarence Walter Parker, 62, of Chesapeake, Ohio, died June 2, 2002, in Cabell-Huntington Hospital. He was a retired graphic design teacher from Putnam County (W.Va.) schools. He was a member of 26th Street Baptist Church where he was a youth counselor. He was a member of Kanawha Valley Lodge 36 AF&AM, Buffalo, W.Va., and a Little League Baseball Coach for League 8 and for youth basketball, Beverly Hills. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Edward Parker; and his brother, George Parker. Johnnie F. Rader
GASSAWAY - Johnnie F. Rader, 75, of Gassaway passed on June 3, 2002, in the Louis B. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg, after a short illness. Johnnie served in the Army during World War II, receiving the Medal of Victory. He was a fireman on the B&O Railroad prior to becoming owner of John Rader Buick Company, founded in 1953. Johnny was active in the community and was a lifelong supporter of numerous civic activities. He served as past president, vice president and board of directors member of the West Virginia Horsemen's Association, and was a member of Beni Kedem Shrine, Charleston, Gassaway Lions Club and Braxton County Rotary Club, as well as the Gassaway Masonic Lodge. Johnnie belonged to the Gassaway United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Lanta and Maysel McLaughlin Rader of Gassaway. Johnnie is survived by his wife, Lou Carol Rader; his sons, Jack Rader of Sutton, Woody Rader of Flatwoods; one daughter, Johnna Lou Stalnaker of Gassaway; five grandchldren, Cordel Rader, Mersadie Rader, Mack Rader, Courtney Stalnaker and Brittany Stalnaker. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at Gassaway United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen J. White officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Richard M.
