ROANOKE, Va. - Mary McKinney Roush, 79, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Winfield, W.Va., and Orlando, Fla., died Nov. 12, 2002, in Richfield Recovery and Care Center, Salem, Va. She was a member of Winfield Baptist Church and was retired from the Putnam County Board of Education with 20 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence A. Roush in 1981. She is survived by her daughter, Dixie Lee Roush Chittum of Roanoke; sons, Clarence Anthony Roush of Salem, Va., Thomas Frederick Roush of Rocky Mount, Va.; grandchildren, Anna Marie Deering of Waynesboro, Va., Shane Anthony Roush of Salem, Va., Cheyenne Turner of Salem; great-granddaughter, Gabriela Marie Deering of Waynesboro. Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Ken Toler officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Jessie B. Ryan, 100, of Hurricane, formerly of Alkol, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday Nov. 12, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital, Hurricane, after a long illness. She was a homemaker and member of Sycamore Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Izola Meadows this past Saturday. She is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Louise Griffith of Alkol, Judy and Rudy Priestley of Hurricane; son and daughter-in-law, Robert D. Jr. and Sue Ryan of Scott Depot; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with the Rev. Dorothy Rose Sheaves
RAVENSWOOD - Dorothy Rose Sheaves, 84, of Ravenswood died Nov. 12, 2002, in Ravenswood Village Center. She was born April 23, 1918 in Bozoo, daughter of the late Patrick Harry Rose and Virginia Arbell Ballard Rose. She was a homemaker. Dorothy became a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Ravenswood in April, 1968. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Women's Missionary Society and Mission Circle throughout the years of her good health. She served as Children's Representative on the Christian Education Board in 1985 and served on the Nominating Committee in 1986. She assisted with Adopt-A-Family and assisted in VBS for several years. Dorothy served on the Church Service Committee and attended Sunday School faithfully for several years. She is survived by four children, JoAnn Huffman and her husband, Eric, of Salisbury, Md., Larry Sheaves and his wife, Sheila, of Stuarts Draft, Va., James Sheaves and his wife, Cecil, of Grottoes, Va., and Debbie Smith and her husband, Ronnie, of Sandyville; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chester; one brother; two sisters; one grandchild. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, with the Rev. GASSAWAY - William Martin Slaughter, 89, of Gassaway died Nov. 11, 2002, at home. He was a construction worker, farmer, Baptist and during WWII he was an Army 1st Sgt. with the 151st Infantry Co. E. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dollie Butcher Slaughter; sons, William M. Slaughter Jr. of Miramar, Fla., Walter Stephen Slaughter of Jessup, Md., Freddie Slaughter of Gassaway; daughter, Louise Mollohan of Gassaway; sister, Sylvia Fowler of Glendale, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. William Avery Tyler
GROVE CITY, Pa. - William Avery Tyler, 90, of Grove City, formerly of Oak Hill, W.Va., died Nov. 8, 2002, in Woodland Place, Mercer. He was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Seda Wolly, Wash. He was a baker for 45 years and was retired from Riverside Market, Grove City, Pa. He was a member of Baptist Church of Oak Hill, and was a former member of VFW Post, Fairmont, W.Va. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a baker First Class. He is survived by his children, William F. Tyler and wife, Carolyn Sue, of Aiken, S.C., Robert E. Tyler of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Irene Cooper, parents, William Tyler and Minnie Frances Thomas, and sister, Ruth Oxendale. Service with full military honors by VFW Post 3110 Oak Hill was noon Tuesday, Nov. 12, at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Cunningham Funeral Home, Grove City, Pa., was in charge of arrangements.

Debra Ann Williams, 47, of Cross Lanes went to be with the Lord Nov. 11, 2002. She passed away in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Debra was a teacher and librarian for Kanawha County Schools for over 24 years, having last taught at Nitro Elementary School. She received her undergraduate degree from Morehead University and her Masters degree at WV College of Graduate Studies. Debra was a member of the West Virginia Education Association, National Education Association and the First Church United Methodist, Dunbar. She had been a Cross Lanes resident for 20 years. She is survived by her parents, Charles K. Williams of South Charleston and Frances Poling Geary of Lady Lake, Fla.; brother, Chuck Williams of Dunbar; sister, Ava Shawkins of Arlington, Va. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Pastor John A. Mason officiating. Burial will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens. Mrs. Nellie C. Asseff, 83, of Charleston died Nov. 13, 2002, at her residence after an extended illness. She was a member of the St. George Orthodox Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Guild and the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Klel Asseff; mother, Lillie Ahwash; brother Kamal Ahwash; and sister, Linda Ahwash. Her son, Abraham and daughter-in-law, Patty Asseff of Hollywood, Fla.; son, David and daughter-in-law, Lynn of Sunrise, Fla.; daughter, JoAnn Habib of Montreal, Canada; brothers, Mike Costinteen and sister-in-law, Rose of Charleston and Eddie Ahwash and sister-in-law, Pat of Charleston; grandchildren, Shawndra, Michael, and Andrea Asseff, Danny, Nick, and Chris Asseff and Carol, Corinne, Michael, and David Habib; one great-granddaughter, Arian D'Martini of Reno, Nev.; and a niece, Sandra Thomas, her husband, Bill, and their children, Kelly and Eddie. The family wishes to extend their thanks to Pinky, her caregiver, and to Dr. Stephen Lewis, her cardiologist. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. James Cebert Hemmings
DIAMOND - James Cebert Hemmings, 79, of Diamond died Nov. 13, 2002, at home. Mr. Hemmings was a devoted husband and loving father. He was an electrician and retired from CAMC's Charleston General Hospital. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the Pacific, a member of Diamond Baptist Church and resided in Diamond most of his life. Surviving are his wife, Willie Frances White Hemmings; son, John William Hemmings of Diamond; daughters, Margaret Davis of Teays Valley and Mary Leadmon of Raleigh, N.C.; sister, Naomi Andersen of Charleston; grandchildren, Anita Lloyd and Crystal Thomas; great-grandchild, Logan Thomas. Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at Fidler & Frame Funeral Home, Belle with the Rev. Lloyd Daubenspeck officiating. Burial will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park, London, with military graveside rites performed by VFW Post No. 8366 of Gauley Bridge. Mr. Henry Wade Hensley Sr.
PRINCETON - Mr. Henry Wade Hensley Sr., 82, of 224 10th St., Princeton, formerly of Boone County, died early Friday morning, Nov. 15, 2002, in the Princeton Community Hospital. Born March 10, 1920, at Chapmanville,he was the son of the late Levi and Ella Ray Scaggs Hensley. Mr. Hensley was raised on Harts Creek in Logan County and had spent the majority of his life in Boone County. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Walk. Mr. Hensley was a retired C&O Railroad employee, having worked for more than 40 years, he had served as a brakeman, yard master and conductor, retiring from the Danville Yard. He was a very active member of the First Baptist Church at Danville, where he was a former deacon, taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of the Pioneer Sunday School Class. Mr. Hensley was a life member of the VFW Chapter 5578 at Madison. He had received his 50-year pin from the O'Dell Lodge, Odd Fellows, Madison, and was a member of the AF & AM Lodge at Madison and the Brotherhood of Railway Workers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, Grady Maxwell, Drucy Jane, Vivian, Chester, Enoch, Eva, Thomas and French. Left to cherish his memory are his loving and caring wife of 55 years, Lillian Miller Hensley of Princeton; two children, Eva Beth Faulkner and her husband, Bill of Princeton, Henry Wade Hensley Jr. of Jacksonville, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Matthew Henry Hensley, Benjamin Levi Hensley, Lindsey Diane Hensley, Adam Frazier Faulkner, Joshua Wade Faulkner, Emma Elizabeth Faulkner, Sarah-Ann Hensley Faulkner; brothers, Wilkie Lemuel Hensley of Culloden, Delbert Ray Hensley of Danville. A home-going celebration will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at First Baptist Church in Danville with the Rev. John Allen Barker officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton. Cryptside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, from the Chapel of the Wildwood Mausoleum, Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Courthouse Road in Princeton.
