Virginia "Grandma" Banks
HURRICANE - Virginia "Grandma" Banks, 85, of Hurricane died Feb. 9, 2003, in St. Mary's Hospital. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Louise Lawson; and sons, Edward and Wayne Lawson. Surviving are a son and his wife, John and Sue Lawson of Hurricane; daughters-in-law, Vio Lafferty of Hurricane, Clarice Lawson of North Olmstead, Ohio; sister, Elnora Moses of Carrollton, Ga.; grandchildren, Carol Blevins, Cynthia Surma, David Lawson, Vivian Wood, Joe Lawson, Rebecca Harless, Wesley Lawson, Lisa Lawson and Carl Lee Lawson; 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Friends may call two hours prior to service at the funeral home.

Thomas Bennett "Tom" Bell
SUMMERSVILLE - Thomas Bennett "Tom" Bell, 48, of Summersville, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in Summersville Memorial Hospital. Tom was born in Richwood on July 29, 1954, and was the son of the late Bennett Bell, Jr. and Carol Bell, who survives. He was a graduate of Nicholas County High School and he attended West Virginia University. Tom enjoyed socializing with his many friends and he was an avid sports fan. He especially loved the WVU Mountaineers. Other survivors include two brothers, Mick Bell of Huntington and Jim Bell of Charleston; and one sister, Tammy Koerner of Cincinnati. There will be no visitation or funeral. Per Tom's wishes, his body was donated to the WVU School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Larry T. Brown Sr.
VIDOR, Texas - Larry T. Brown Sr., 61, of Vidor, Texas, formerly of Charleston, W.Va., passed away Feb. 8, 2003, following an extended illness. Before moving to Texas, he attended Valley Grove Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ethel Brown; stepfather, J.L. Reynolds; and a brother, John Brown. He is survived by his wife, Pat Adams Brown; daughters, Kelly, Vicki and Robin, all of Vidor; sons, Larry Jr. and Scott, both of Vidor; sisters, maxine Brown of Charleston, Betty Brown of New Mexico; brothers and their wives, W.R. "Bill" and Shelda Brown of Elkview, W.Va., Clarence "Pete" and Kathy Brown of Connecticut; nine grandchildren. Graveside service was Sunday, Feb. 9, in Restlawn Cemetery, Vidor. Eugene W. Clendenin Jr.
ORLANDO, Fla. - Eugene W. "Rusty" Clendenin Jr., 50, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Charleston, died Feb. 7, 2003, in Florida Hospital, Kissimmee. He was a 1971 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School, received a bachelor's degree in management from West Virginia State College in 1982 and attended Morris Harvey College. He was a retired manager from AT&T, Orlando, with 26 years of service, and was a former employee of C&P Telephone Company of West Virginia. He was a member of the Telephone Company Pioneers of America, the American Numismatists Association Coin Club and Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was an avid coin collector, golfer, fisherman, boater and reader. He enjoyed most of all his family and friends. Rusty was preceded in death by his father, Eugene W. Clendenin Sr.; grandparents, Simon and Garnet Walker, James and Leslie Clendenin; and a brother-in-law, Kelly Woodall. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Shafer Clendenin of Orlando; daughter, Callie Marie Clendenin of Orlando; mother, Ruby Walker Clendenin of Charleston; sister, Beth Woodall Lipscomb of Charleston; niece, Alexis Lipscomb of Charleston; nephew, Billy Woodall of Charleston; several aunts, uncles and cousins. CRAIGSVILLE - Freda Lois Dobson, 94, of Craigsville passed away Feb. 7, 2003, in Richwood Area Community Hospital, Richwood, after a long illness. She attended Hinkle Chapel Church, Craigsville. She received her teaching certificate from Glenville State College and taught school on Cranberry Ridge and a the Woodall School, Beaver, Nicholas County. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Sharon and John Whitley of Craigsville; three brothers, Stewart Woodall of California, Charlie Woodall of Florida, Robert Woodall of Oklahoma; one sister, Phala Shannon of Ashland, Ky.; three grandchildren, Teresa Schoutem of Sedalia, Mo., Shona Adkins of Glade Creek, Steven Whitley of Frisco, Texas; and seven great-grandchildren. Ricky Thomas Elkins
OAK HILL - Ricky Thomas Elkins, 42, of Oak Hill died Feb. 7, 2003, at home following a short illness. Born Feb. 7, 1961, in Holden, he was the son of Max A. and Mary P. Elkins of Oak Hill. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Halbert and Hazel Elkins of Lyburn, Leo and Barbara Wolf of Michigan. Mr. Elkins attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School and Oak Hill High School. He served in the U.S. Army for three years. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters and a brother-in-law, Jane and Jay of Grand Junction, Colo., Sandy of Fayetteville, Carla of Grand Junction; a brother and his wife, Dean and Sheryl of Oak Hill; his children, Rick Sr. and wife, Stacy, of Fayetteville, Tommy, Shirley Sue and Benjamin, all of Oak Hill, Christopher Burns of Fayetteville; grandson, Rick Jr.; close friends, Tammy Burns and daughter, Amanda; nephews, Brandon, Levi and Taylor, all of Grand Junction, Keith of Oak Hill; nieces, Alisha of Fayetteville, Jill of Grand Junction; great-niece, Adina of Grand Junction. Kenneth E. Fitzwater Sr., 80, of St. Albans passed away Feb. 8, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital. Mr. Fitzwater was retired from Uninon Carbide, South Charleston, with over 40 years of service, a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, St. Albans, and a Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margie Fitzwater of St. Albans; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth E. Jr. and Charlotte Fitzwater; three grandchildren, Kenneth E. Leona P. Ganoe
BELLEVIEW, Fla. - Leona P. Ganoe, 89, of Belleview, Fla., formerly of Summersville, Nicholas County, W.Va., died Feb. 6, 2003, in Surry Place, Ocala, Fla. Born April 12, 1913, at Tipton, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Rupert and Loretta Harrah Hypes. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Berman Ganoe Sr.; and by one son, Berman Ganoe Jr. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Belleview. Survivors include three sons, Jack Ganoe of Ravenna, Ohio, Jim Ganoe of Summersville, Dwight Ganoe of Belleview; four daughters, Pauline Proctor of Summersville, Lula Summers of Northeast, Md., Dottie Brumm of Summerfield, Fla., Mary Gray of Belleview; 22 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. WEBSTER SPRINGS - Barbara Jean Gillespie, 60, of Webster Springs died Feb. 7, 2003, in Webster Memorial Hospital, Webster Springs. Born Aug. 14, 1942, in Cowen, she was a daughter of the late Donald D. and Eurlacce Gillespie. She was a homemaker, resided most of her life in Webster County and formerly attended the Holiness Church. Survivors include her daughters, Cecilia Bowman of Mount Airy, N.C., Marie Bowman of Webster Springs, Vickie Bowman of Ararat, Va., Lena Trent of Stuart, Va.; brothers, Larry Gillespie of Cowen, Don Junior Gillespie of Point Pleasant, Sherman Gillespie of Chicago, Ill., Sunny Gillespie of Ohio, Bob Houchins of Tennessee, Jack Houchins of Ohio; sisters, Mary Ledsom of Cowen, Joyce Riffle of Ohio, Drema Hines and Terri Carpenter, both of Webster Springs, Deanna Facemire of Charleston; and three grandchildren. Lowell Judson Gillespie
Lowell Judson Gillespie, 88, of Belle died Feb. 9, 2003, in Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a long illness. Mr. Gillespie was a retired electrician from E.I. DuPont Chemical Plant, Belle. He was a 57-year member of Judson Baptist Church, Belle, where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher and served on many boards. He was a member of Chelyan Lodge 58 AF&AM, Scottish Rite bodies and AARP. He was loved by and much loved his family and saw God's creation in nature. He was an Army Signal Corps veteran of World War II. He enjoyed the family farm and planted thousands of trees. He was the fourth of 12 children and was saved at Sewell Baptist Church in 1923. Mr. Gillespie is survived by his wife, Millie Mangus Gillespie; sons, Mark Gillespie of Louisville, Ohio, Gene Gillespie of Richmond, Va., Neil Gillespie of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Lynn Morrison of Charleston; a brother, C.H. Gillespie of Berea, Ky.; sisters, Ruby Devrick of Point Pleasant, Vergie Spiker of Kennett Square, Pa., Rachel Lee of Germantown, Ohio; grandchildren, Scott, Melissa, David and Seth Gillespie and J.D. HURRICANE - Clifford Woodrow Hall, 89, of Hurricane died Feb. 8, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital after an extended illness. He was born Sept. 19, 1913, in Yawkey, Lincoln County, the son of the late Charles J. and Effie Mitchell Hall. He was a 1932 graduate of East Bank High School and attended West Virginia Institute of Technology, West Virginia State College and Morris Harvey College. He was a retired production supervisor in fine chemicals from Union Carbide Corporation, South Charleston, with 42 years of service. Upon his retirement, he spent much of this time enjoying his favorite hobby, gardening. He was a 33-year resident of Hurricane and a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church. He is survived his wife of 67 years, Virginia F. Hall, who spent the last 10 years taking care of Cliff during his illness; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith W. and Bette Hall of St. Albans, Larry D. Hall of Sugarland, Texas, Paul W. and Carolyn Hall of Scott Depot; grandchildren, David Hall of New Orleans, La., Susan Treen of Alum Creek, Marilyn Hall of St. Albans, Dean Kinder of St. Albans, Stephanie Hensley of Nitro, Chris Hall of Houston, Texas, Kim McCord of Houston, Texas, Tracie Hall of Cross Lanes, Steven Hall of Scott Depot; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Brittany Treen of Alum Creek, Marissa and Sean Kinder of St. Albans, Autumn and Ashley Hensley of Nitro; a sister-in-law, and her husband, Fern and Harold Swisher of South Charleston; and several nieces and nephews. Ray Corbin Hamon
Ray Corbin Hamon, 75, of St. Albans died Feb. 7, 2003, at home after a long illness. Ray was a member and active on various committees of Lakeview United Methodist Church, St. Albans. He was a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop No. 126, was on the executive board of the Buckskin Council, and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was two time past president and two time past chairman of District 3 Republican Club. He was recognized as a Distinguished West Virginian in 1975 by the governor of West Virginia for service to humanity. He was retired from Union Carbide, South Charleston with 33 years of service. He was a United States Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ova M. and Lucy Burdette Hamon; two sisters, Maxine Hamon and Norrine Freeman Benson; surviving are daughters, Carol Davis of Tornado, Linda Martin of St. Albans; sons, David Hamon of Lynn Haven, Fla., John Hamon of Roanoke, Va.; sisters, Betty Parton of Charleston, Beulah Sigman and Sandra Gunther, both of Ripley, Ethel Jones of Ripley; brother, Avas Hamon of St. Albans; seven grandchildren; the mother of his children and his friend, Dorothy Hamon of St. Albans. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Moore, in 1988; son, Robert Moore at Willow Island in 1978; brothers, Byrn, Othie and Hoy Hamric; sister, Hallie Gay Rollyson. Surviving are granddaughters, Shannon Dean of Flatwoods, Brandi White of Gassaway, Amber Loyd of Sutton; grandsons, Jamie and John Moore, both of Duck; daughter-in-law and her husband, Patty and Jim Moore of Duck; great-grandchildren, Megan and Tyler Dean of Flatwoods, Traven Loyd of Sutton; and several nieces and nephews.
