Lydia L. Silman, 97, of Nitro died May 31, 2003 at Marmet Health Care. Mrs. Silman is a native of Raymond City, a lifelong resident of Poca and Nitro, and member of the 15th Street Church of God in Nitro. She is preceded in death by her husband, Foy Silman. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Betty Weaver and Mrs. Kay Webb, both of Nitro; four grandchildren, Greg Weaver, Sandra Pauley, Arianne Blankenship, and Marianne Webb; five great grandchildren, Kelly Brewer, Sarah Weaver, Danielle Blankenship, Amanda Blankenship, and Ashley Shreves-Webb. Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Rob Vanfossen officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park. Katherine Robinson Walker
Katherine Robinson Walker, 80, of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord, May 30, 2003, at home, after a long illness. She was in the first group of school crossing guards that worked for the city of Charleston. She was a member of the Charleston Mountain Mission, and a lifelong resident of Kanawha County. Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Everette A. Walker. Surviving are daughters, Marilyn Walker of Charleston, and Betty A. Fisher of Dunbar; brother, Arlie Robinson of Charleston; sister, Ruth Moore of Sissonville; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A special thank you to Dr. William L. Harris and his staff. Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, Charleston, with the Rev. Fairley McCormick officiating. Charles C. Young
CLENDENIN - Charles C. Young, 92, of Clendenin died June 1, 2003 after a short illness. He was born Sept. 18, 1910 at Queen Shaols to the late H. Scott and Bertha Mullins Young. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sally Young; brothers, Henry F., William Clark, Byron "Tater", Rev. Frank, Harold "Shady" and H. Scott Young, Jr. He grew up attending Brawley Chapel and later became a member of the Clendenin United Methodist Church. He was also a 57-year member of the Clendenin Lions Club, a retired sales manager at Bob Peden Chevrolet and a graduate of Clendenin High School. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy C. White and her husband, Larry of Pinch, and Rose Marie Workman of Clendenin; grandchildren, A.J. White, Craig White, Luke Workman and Brandon Workman. Service will be noon Tuesday, June 3, at Clendenin United Methodist Church, Clendenin with the Dr. E. Wendall Eskew officiating. Burial will be at the Koontz Cemetery, Clendenin. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2003, at Clendenin United Methodist Church. Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin is in charge of the arrangements. Quentin Arthur Curry
WEST HAMLIN - Quentin Arthur Curry, 84, of Route 1, West Hamlin, passed away June 3, 2003, at the home of his son after a long illness. Born July 21, 1918, he was the son of the late Chester Arthur and Myrtie May Moore Curry. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathryn Marie Jarvis Curry; and two brothers, Wilmont and Ceybert Curry. Quentin was a veteran of World War II in submarine service and retired from E.I. DuPont Chemicals, Belle. He was a loving husband and father and loved his country and community. He also loved the family farm on lower Mud River where he lived his entire life and raised his family. He was a Christian and a member of Portersville Missionary Baptist Church on lower Mud River. He is survived by two sisters, Pauline Hall of Salt Rock, Birtha Marie Hayes of Sun City, Ariz.; one daughter, Sue McCallister of West Hamlin; a son, Larry Curry of West Hamlin; daughter-in-law, Patricia Sue Curry; son-in-law, James F. McCallister; five grandchildren, Tracy Vickers of Salt Rock, Jamie Keaton, Amy McCallister, Jim McCallister and Shelly Adkins, all of West Hamlin; five great-grandchildren, Clint and Cody Vickers of Salt Rock, Drew and Dana Keaton and Dylan Adkins, all of West Hamlin. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 6, at Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin, with Pastor Kim Stone of Freedom Baptist Church, Milton, and Pastor David Vickers of Portersville Baptist Church, Portersville, officiating. SCOTT DEPOT - Mary Elizabeth Dent, 86, of Scott Depot went to be with her Lord June 3, 2003, at home. She was born May 15, 1917, in Southside, Mason County, a daughter of the late James W. and Mimmie Surbaugh Lanier. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dawson Dent; sisters, Ruth Racer and Virginia Lanier; grandsons, Brian and Troy Dent; her grandfather, John David Surbaugh; a son-in-law, Acie Call; and an infant son at birth. Her family includes 15 sets of five generations. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church, Cross Lanes, and was a five-year member of KOPS. Surviving are daughters and their husbands, Nancy Call of Fraziers Bottom, Linda and Lonnie Pauley of Winfield, Rebecca and John Snyder of Scott Depot; sons and their wives, Sidney and Jean Dent, John and Shelia Dent and Donald Wayne Dent, all of Scott Depot, William "Ted" and Susie Dent of Millington, Tenn., Larry Dent of Poca; brother, John Lanier of South Charleston; 29 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Peggy Smith of Nitro. PINE KNOB - Lillian Jo Dickens, 65, of Pine Knob, Raleigh County, died June 1, 2003, in Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C., after a long illness. Born March 26, 1938, at Centralia, Braxton County, she was a daughter of the late Lensey and Gaye Williams Hosey. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Clutter and Myrtle Thorpe. Mrs. Dickens was a cook for RCCA for many years with Headstart at Pine Knob and Stover. She is survived by her husband, Pete Dickens; two daughters and their husbands, Vicky and Joe Runion of Seth, Patricia "Sis" and Teddy Cole of Naoma; two sons, Ricky Dickens and Danny Dickens and his companion, Rosie Lively, all of Naoma; sister, Betty Davis of White Sands, N.M., two grandchildren, Scottie Cole of Naoma, Brandy Voiers of Bradley; six great-grandchildren, Autumn Cole, Trisha "Tinsey" Cole, Summer Cole, Joey Voiers II, Madison Cole and Morgan Cole; and six stepgrandchildren. Dolores Jean Jividen
ELEANOR - Dolores Jean King Jividen, 64, of Eleanor passed away June 2, 2003, of injuries sustained in a car accident on Route 34 near Winfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arlie V. and Pansy V. Kessell. Jean was an employee of Elder-Beerman, Kanawha City, and attended Emma Chapel, Liberty. She will be greatly missed by all her family, especially as a loving wife, mother and mother-in-law, and by her many friends as well as her beloved dog, Mollie. Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Rex; daughter and son-in-law, Carrie L. and Rick Harris of Scott Depot; and stepgrandson, Andrew Harris of Eleanor. Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at Emma Chapel, Liberty, with the Rev. Hubert Groves officiating. Burial will be in the Emma Chapel Cemetery. Lewis George Johnson, 83, of Rand passed away May 31, 2003, at Hubbard Hospice House following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellestene Johnson; father and mother, Frank and Georgia Johnson; a sister, Angus King; and brothers, Frank Johnson Jr. and Dunbar Dixon. He was a veteran of World War II and was employed by the Exxon bulk plant with 34 years of service. Left to cherish his memory are son, Dale Lewis Johnson; daughter-in-law, Teresa J. Johnson; grandson, Dale "D.J." Johnson of Rand; sisters, Roberta Mack Evelyn Martin and her husband, William Sr., of Covington, Va., Fluncy Flood of Cleveland, Ohio, brother, Merdith Dixon of Cleveland; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Hazel and William "Billy" Barbour of Lewisburg; foster sons, William Morton and Denver Wilson; special caregiver, Sharon "Karen" Erby of Rand; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Kelley G. "Sam" Reed, 82, of South Charleston passed away May 31, 2003, in Hubbard Hospice House after a short illness. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Union Carbide Institute plant. He was a graduate of Western Reserve University and a 32nd degree Mason with the Panama Shagras Lodge. Mr. Reed is survived by his wife, Virginia Smith Reed; daughter, Nola Ann Gillenwater of Dunbar; stepson, Harry H. Smith, and family, of St. Albans; and two grandchildren. Melvin L. "Bud" Atkins Jr., 59, of Charleston died July 30, 2003, after a short illness. He was a member and trustee of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Bud was a veteran of the Air Force and served in Vietnam. Mr. Atkins worked for Walker Machinery for 32 years. He was a member of Operating Engineers Union Local 132 C. Surviving are his wife of 32 years Alice F. Atkins; daughter, Vickie Atkins of Columbus, Ohio; brother, Gary Atkins of Melbourne, Fla.; sister, Judith Murray of Sumpter, S.C., Karen Sorden of Winfield, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Buckalew; and 12 brothers and sisters preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Joyce Ann Buckalew of Charleston; grandson, Donald "J.R." Weekley of Charleston; and great-grandson, Damon Abshire of Dunbar.
