Irene Eugena Hoge, 87, of Jackson, Ky., died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, Ky., after a long illness. She was a member of Guerrant Memorial Presbyterian Church and Order of the Eastern Star. She was a graduate of the University of Kentucky. She was employed as bursar of South Western University, Washington D.C., a teacher in Breathitt County, Ky., and was a retired manager of agricultural and soil conservation with 32 years of service.
Surviving: sister, Virginia Hoge Cooper of Bedford, Ky.; several nieces and nephews Service will be 1 p.m. at Winfield Cemetery, Winfield. Burial will follow. SCARBRO -- Joseph Bernard "Rudy" Humphrey, 77, of Scarbro died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley, after a short illness. He was owner/operator of River Rat Inn, Scarbro, an Army veteran and a Baptist.
Surviving: daughters, Barbara Pack of Scarbro, Sue Kelly of North Carolina; sons, Johnny of Oak Hill, Delby, Ronnie and Joe of Scarbro, Denny of Gatewood; brother, Armon Humphrey of Oak Hill; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. GREENVILLE -- John C. "Smiley" Johnson, 77, of Greenville died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in a Summers County care center. He was a farmer, an Army veteran of World War II, a retired employee of Celanese Corp., served on the Silver-Haired Legislature and the Council on Aging, was a member of Greenville Ruritans and the Wayside Saddle Club and a carrier for the Sunday Beckley newspaper for more than 20 years.
Surviving: sons, Wayne and Maury of Greenville, David of Union; daughter, R. Darlene Johnson of Greenville; brothers, Paul E. and Larry of Greenville, Richard of Union, Marion of Niles, Ohio; sister, Iris Smith of Maryland; seven grandchildren. Frank J. Krebs
SEBRING, Ohio -- Frank J. Krebs, 92, of Sebring, Ohio, formerly of Charleston, died Friday Jan. 30, 1998 in Sebring after a long illness. He was born in the village of Szakadath, Hungary, and immigrated to America with his mother, brother and sister. He attended Mount Union College, Alliance, Ohio, where he received his B.A. degree. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He was a high school teacher and administrator in Carroll and Harrison counties in Ohio. He was superintendent of schools, Southern District, from 1944 to 1949, and employed by the U.S. Office of Education. He was a retired professor from the University of Charleston with 23 years service. He was a member of Dellroy Ohio United Methodist Church, St. Marks United Methodist Church, Charleston, and York and Scottish Rites in Masonry.
Surviving: sister, Rose Folk of Akron, Ohio; several nieces and nephews. Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at J.E. Johnson Funeral Home, Charleston. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Charleston. SUMERCO -- Boyce C. McCormick, 58, of Sumerco died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, from injuries received in a four-wheeler accident on Laurel Fork, near his home, according to a State Police spokeswoman. He was a pipefitter, a member of Pipefitters Union Local 521, Huntington, and Moose Lodge, Nitro, and was a Marine Corps veteran.
