WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS -- Tyres "Ham" Ayres, 75, of White Sulphur Springs died Friday, March 27, 1998, at home after a long illness. He was a member of Alvon United Methodist Church, VFW Post 4482 and the White Sulphur Springs Lions Club, was retired from Peoples Life Insurance Co. with 21 years of service, was a veteran of World War II, attended Greenbrier Military School and was a graduate of White Sulphur Springs High School.
Surviving: wife, Grey Wyatt Ayres; daughters, Elaine White, Susan Ayres and Shirley Lynch of White Sulphur Springs, Karen Lee of Lynchburg, Va.; sister, Ila Mae McLean of Houston; seven grandchildren. He was a graduate of Meadow Bridge (W.Va.) High School, received his bachelor's degree from Concord College, his master's degree from Marshall University and his doctorate from the University of Maryland, was a retired Maryland schoolteacher, a former Meadow Bridge schoolteacher and a member of Rainelle United Methodist Church.

He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, an Army veteran of the Korean War, received his business degree from Beckley College, was former co-owner/operator of the Rainbow Grill, a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Beckley, and of the church's Parrish Board and was retired from Raleigh General Hospital with 18 years of service.

She was a homemaker and the first women to be elected sheriff of Webster County. She was a member of the Point Mountain Church, near Webster Springs.

She was a 51 year member of the St. Andrew United Methodist Church, St. Albans, the United Bible Class, the Wesleyan Fellowship and the Order of the Eastern Star 79.

She was a 40 year resident of Cleveland, a member of the Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Charleston, Presbyterian Women, Tiskelwah Chapter 45, Order of the Eastern Star, a graduate of Charleston High School, A graduate of Morris Harvey College and a graduate of the court reporting class of the Charleston School of Commerce.
