BECKLEY -- The Rev. Elmer H. Day Sr., 85, of Beckley died Thursday, April 23, 1998, in Raleigh General Hospital after a long illness. He was a retired miner, a member of St. John Baptist Church, Raleigh, former pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church, Skelton, Hico Baptist Church and New Salem Baptist Church, Tams, and was pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church, Eccles, and First Baptist Church, Lester. Surviving: sons, Robert, Raymond H. and Elmer Day Jr. of Beckley; daughters, Martha Staples of Fort Washington, Md., Velma Chase of Detroit, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Winding Gulf Baptist Music Center, Glen White, with the Rev. Winston Woods, the Rev. Thomas V. Moore and the Rev. Nelson Staples officiating. She was a homemaker, a native of Charleston and a lifelong resident of Kanawha County. He was former owner of Matthews Block Plant, Charleston, W.Va., held managerial positions in several chemical companies, was involved in the preservation of historic buildings, was president of Middletown Civic Club, a former Middletown city commissioner, was on the board of the Historic Middletown Museum and was a member of Historic Middletown Inc. Surviving: son, Charles R. Matthews II of Turnersville, N.J.; daughters, Sheridan M. Owen of Crestwood, Ky., Charlotte M. Yeager of Summersville and Charleston, W.Va.; brother, Russell Matthews of Easton, Pa.; sisters, Frances Baylor of Englewood, Fla., Marian Primrose of Tampa, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
