GRANTSVILLE -- Elva V. Vaughan, 79, of Grantsville died Thursday, May 8, 1997, at the home of her daughter in Dunbar. She was born in Calhoun County, attended Glenville State College and was an active civic leader in Grantsville. She was instrumental in the development of Bramblewood Seniors Village near Grantsville and Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, Grantsville. She was a charter member of Calhoun General Hospital Auxiliary, a member of Grantsville Civic Club and a former officer in Grantsville chapter of the American Red Cross. She contributed to the recruitment of many physicians into the Grantsville community and she and her late husband, Lloyd Vaughan, were honored by having Vaughan Road named after them. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Grantsville. Surviving: son, J. Michael Vaughan of Williamstown; daughters, Caroline Charonko of Charleston, Susan Vaughan of Dunbar, Jeannie Tanner of Vienna; sisters, Leota Yoak of Titusville, Fla., Norita Ballato of Follansbee; brother, Loyd T. Wright of Fleming, Ohio; half brothers, John Wright of Lynnhurst, Ohio, David Wright of East Lake, Ohio; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. She was a retired employee of Huntington District Engineers, Manhattan District Engineers, Oak Ridge, Tenn, and the Navy and General Services Administration, Point Pleasant. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Point Pleasant, Col. Charles Lewis Chapter, Nations Society of the DAR and the Garden Club. Pearl Maxwell Bland, 82, of St. Albans died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, in CAMC, Memorial Division, after a short illness. She was a retired teacher with 35 years of service in Gilmer, Clay and Kanawha counties, and for 26 years was co-owner/operator of the Bland Motel, St. Albans. She was a 52-year resident of St. Albans, a graduate of Glenville State Teachers College, member of First Baptist Church, St. Albans, where she was a devotion leader for the Fidelis Class, and was a member of Job's Temple Association, a Gilmer County landmark which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. She was a member of the West Virginia Education Association, Retired Teachers Association of Kanawha County, West Virginia Retired Teachers Association and St. Albans branch of American Association of University Women. She was a Cub Scout den mother, a Brownies and Girl Scouts leader, a Kanawha County 4-H Club leader for 30 years and was an active member of Hansford Senior Center, St. Albans. She was a West Virginia published author and poet, her most recent work describing her life growing up in rural West Virginia, entitled, "`Memberig," which was published in 1994. Surviving: son, Robert of Charleston; daughter, Betti Volkers of Charleston; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Casdorph-Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating.
