Frank Ray Coombs Sr.
Frank Ray "Bill" Coombs Sr., 77, of River Road, Morgantown, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at home. He was born July 10, 1923, in Morgantown, son of the late Hershel Vance and Effie Alice Summer Coombs. He served in the Marine Corps Third Division during World War II. He worked as a plumbing and heating contractor and as a custodian for the Monongalia County Board of Education. He was a member of Morgantown Union Lodge 4, a 32-degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was Protestant. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Doris Almeda Murphy Coombs; two daughters, Dotty Hunt, of Lost Creek, and Pam Spadafore, of Morgantown; a niece raised as a daughter, Chyrl Drummond, of Jane Lew; a son, Frank Ray Coombs Jr., of Morgantown; a brother, Jesse Dale Coombs, of Morgantown; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Coombs. Friends may call at McCulla Funeral Home from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday. Service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, with the Rev. Stacy L. Groscup officiating. Burial will be in Beverly Hills Cemetery. Westover VFW Post 9916 will conduct military graveside rites, and Morgantown Union Lodge 4 will provide Masonic graveside services.

Kathryn D. Hardin
Kathryn D. Hardin, 82, of Sylvan Drive, Morgantown, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. Dering's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles H. Austin
Charles H. "Pete" Austin, 82, of Independence, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 20, 1917, in Monongalia County, son of the late Charles and Etta Costello Austin. He was retired from Romish Manufacturing as a welder. He was a farmer and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was Methodist. He is survived by two brothers, Kenneth Austin, of Grafton Road, and Raymond Austin, of Independence; six sisters, Fern Austin, Geneva McCrobie, Betty Turner and Mary Pitch, all of Independence, Delores Howell, of Morgantown, and Jean Sanders, of Grafton Road; and a brother-in-law, Virgil Grimm, of Grafton Road. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Strang, Frances Grimm and Dorothy Austin; and two brothers, James E. "Boots" Austin and Claude Austin. Josephine Virginia Herd
Josephine Virginia Herd, 91, formerly of Euclid Avenue, Morgantown, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at Sundale Nursing Home. She was born March 2, 1909, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Charles T. and Grace Arnett Herd. She was a lifelong resident of Morgantown, and had been an associate with the First National Bank of Morgantown for more than 40 years. She is survived by a niece, Connie Herd Nagy; two grandnieces, Brenda K. Herd and Laura L. Hager; and a great-grandnephew, Dane T. Hager, all of Hurricane. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles T. Herd Jr., and a nephew, Donald A. Herd. Ethel Mae Kimbrel
Ethel Mae Kimbrel, 76, of Arnettsville, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born Aug. 27, 1923, in Elkins, daughter of the late William Rockford and Stella Barker Elza. She was a homemaker, and Methodist. She is survived by her husband, John Cleveland Kimbrel; two daughters, Barbara Jean Kimbrel Carter, of Morgantown, and Linda Sue Kimbrel Hardison, of Sheperdsville, Ky.; a son, William Monroe Kimbrel, of Bruceton Mills; a brother, Anthony Charnow, of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Ann Charnow Woodward, of Fairmont; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Margy Ellen Kimbrel Lancaster; two brothers, Samuel Elza and Fred Charnow; a sister, Sylvia Elza Comp; and a grandchild. Friends may call at Fred L. James P. Sloan
James P. Sloan Jr., 83, of Lake Lynn, Pa., recently of Uniontown, Pa., died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at the Mount Macrina Manor, after a long illness. He was born Sept. 6, 1916, in Hopwood, Pa., son of the late James P. and Rosa Sloan. He was a World War II Army veteran with Co. B, 442nd Signal Construction Battalion. In civilian life, he was employed as a construction inspector with Penn DOT, District 12-1, retiring with 26 years of service. He was a life member and Past Commander of Post 449 American Legion, Point Marion; life member D.A.V.; member of F.O.E. No. 1932 Point Marion, Pa.; and a 26-year member of the former Gallatin Grange No. 1580. He is survived by a stepson and spouse, Larry and Teena Rogerson, of Dilliner, Pa.; a daughter, Joyce, and her children, Jimmie, Janie and Jodi; stepgrandchildren, Kandra Sankovich and Joy Newman; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Dustin Newman and Travis Sankovich. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Francis Rogerson Sloan, on Jan. 8, 2000; and two brothers, Charles and Robert Sloan. Friends may call at the Richard R. Madeline Hornyak
Madeline Perkins Hornyak, 82, of Reedsville, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Preston Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 27, 1918, in Braxton County, daughter of the late Martin Luther and Dessie Hinkle Perkins. She was a member of St. Zita's Catholic Church in Masontown and retired from Pittsburgh Valve. She is survived by a son and spouse, Joe and Helen Jo Hornyak, of Bretz; a daughter, Joyce Gilmore, of Morgantown; a sister, Elsie Taylor, of Ohio; five grandchildren, Mark, Candace, Melody, Kristal and Stacy; and five great-grandchildren, Megan, Abigail, Vanessa, Victoria and Lindsay. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Mike Hornyak, in March 1996; three sisters and five brothers. Friends may call at the Waldeck Funeral Home in Masontown from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, with a Christian Wake Service at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at St. Zita's Catholic Church in Masontown with the Rev. Argyle Ray Bonnette
Argyle Ray Bonnette, 89, of Shriver, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Sundale Nursing Home. He was born July 30, 1911, in Gilmer County, son of the late Robert and Iva Dell Workman Bonnette. He retired from Consolidated Coal Co. in 1978. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps stationed at Keith. He also retired from the Morgantown Police Reserves as a lieutenant and was specifically recognized for his service with the reserves upon his retirement. He served with the group from 1945 until 1989. He is survived by his companion, Betty Morris, and her children; a son, Kennyth R. Bonnette, of Morgantown; a daughter and spouse, Sandra and Robert Lake, of Kingwood; two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Betty Jo) Atkins, of Morgantown, and Helen Bonnette, of Geneva, Ohio; two brothers, Claude Bonnette, of Arthurdale, and Harold Bonnette, of Geneva, Ohio; four grandchildren and a spouse, Kevin and Tracy Bonnette, of Morgantown, Keith Bonnette and Robin Lazzelle, both of Morgantown, and Susan Lazzelle, of Kingwood; and a great-grandson, Preston Ray Bonnette. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leola Bonnette; his second wife, Rebecca Jean Williams Bonnette; five brothers and two sisters. Friends may call at the Fred L. Barry F. Celey
Barry F. Celey, 65, of Morgantown, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at home after a long illness. He was born June 22, 1935, in Hobbs, N.M., son of the late Thomas and Launa Dinman Celey Boyer. He served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, as part of the White House staff from 1963 to 1968 under the Kennedy and Johnson administration. He retired from Monongalia General Hospital Facilities Management Department in 1993. He was a member and past Exalted Ruler of Morgantown Elks Lodge No. 411. He is survived by his wife, Gladys "Freddie" Celey; two sons and spouses, Steve and Angel Celey, of Morgantown, and Joel and Wendy Celey, of Heyworth, Ill.; a daughter, Deborah Celey, of Maysville; three granddaughters, Nicole, Ann Marie and Tayler Beth Celey; and a grandson, Barry V. Bruce Edward Rembold
Bruce Edward Rembold, 48, of Eglon, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in Eglon. He was born April 17, 1952, in Oakland, Md., son of Eileen P. Henline Rembold and the late John Robert Rembold. He was employed as a saw technician. He was a deacon at the Maple Spring Church of the Brethren in Eglon. He is also survived by his wife, Mary Roth Rembold; two sons, Shaun and Craig Rembold, both of Eglon; and a sister, Sandra Mincer, of Ona. Michael Lynn Cale
Michael Lynn Cale, 37, of Sugar Valley community, Albright, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at home. He was born Oct. 6, 1962, in Kingwood, son of Gary H. Cale, of Albright, and Eleanor Hiley Stewart, of Fairmont. He was an electrician. He was a member of Sugar Valley United Methodist Church and was a Cub Scout volunteer. He was a graduate of Bruceton High School. He is also survived by his wife, Jerlyn Shannon Cale; a son and daughter, Devin Allen Cale, and Merissa Nicole Cale; and his grandparents who raised him, Harland and Dorothy Cale, of Albright; and grandmother, Mildred Hiley of Pennsboro. Dr. John J. Halki
Dr. John J. "Jack" Halki, Brigadier General (Ret.) died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at U.S. Air Force Medical Center Wright-Patterson, after a short illness. He was born July 28, 1926, in Fairchance, Pa., son of the late John and Ann Halki. He was also preceded in death by a son, Truman Halki.

Doris H. Wagner
Doris H. Wagner, 80, of Grove Street in Morgantown, formerly of Grant Town, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born July 3, 1920, in Youngstown, Ohio, daughter of the late Albert and Lula Rockhold Jones. She was a member of the Suncrest United Methodist Church, Drummond Chapel Campus. She was a graduate of the Sinai Nursing School in Baltimore. She was a retired registered nurse, a member of the Sinai Nurses' Alumni Association and a volunteer for the Marion County Hospice. She is survived by her husband, Leroy S. Wagner; two sons and spouse, Leroy S. II and Margo Wagner, of Baltimore, and Lance B. Wagner, of Morgantown; a daughter and spouse, Vanessa and Gary Murdock, of Morgantown; a sister, Margaret Bierdeman, of San Carlos, Calif.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Hastings Funeral Home provided cremation services. A memorial service will be held at Suncrest United Methodist Church, Drummond Chapel Campus, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, with the Rev. Ronald McCauley officiating. James F. Klingensmith
James F. Klingensmith, 95, of Goodwin Hill Road, Morgantown, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at home. He was born Nov. 18, 1904, in Monessen, Pa., son of the late Breeden E. and Emma Blanch Rush Klingensmith. He was an electrician for West Virginia University, and a Jehovah's Witness. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He is survived by three daughters and spouses, Alice and Paul McIe, of Springfield, Tenn., and Virginia Cordwell and Wanda and Richard McCormick, all of Morgantown; two sons and spouses, James F. Jr. and Jane Klingensmith of Lake Placid, Fla., and Robert Clyde and Sue Klingensmith, of Morgantown; a brother, Everett Klingensmith, of Fairmont; two sisters, Inez Fawley, of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Irene Garlett, of Portage, Ind.; and 29 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, N. Louise Klingensmith; four daughters, Betty Kencell, Inez Machurick, Mary Klingensmith and Margaret Klingensmith; a son, Charles Raymond Klingensmith; a brother, George Klingensmith; and a sister, Mary Myers. Betty Spencer
Betty Spencer, 53, of Tunnelton, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in Morgantown. She was born March 7, 1942, in Sussex County, Del., daughter of the late Woodrow Pase Sr. and Thelma Helmick Pase. She was Pentecostal. She was an avid bingo player. She is survived by her husband of 14 years, Harold Spencer; four sons, Anthony Scott Sines, of Terra Alta, John Simpson, of Youngstown, Ohio, Bobby Plum Jr., of Tunnelton, and Harold D. Spencer, of Rowlesburg; three brothers, George Pase, Charles Pase and Woodrow "Junior" Pase Jr., all of Tunnelton; two sisters, Sylvia Bolyard and Kristel Plum, both of Tunnelton; and 12 grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Linton and Goldie Helmick; three brothers; a sister; and a grandson, Cory Scott Sines. Harold Veon Long
Harold Veon Long, 55, of Little Birch, died Aug. 12, 2000, at Canaan Valley, Davis, as a result of injuries received in a plane crash. He was born Aug. 11, 1945, in Little Birch, son of Gladys Jackson Long, of Little Birch, and the late Selby V. Long. He was founder and president of Product Distributors Inc., in Little Birch. A graduate of Glenville State College, he was a former teacher at Braxton County High School. He was also a former member of the W.Va. House of Delegates from 1975-78. He was a former member and chairman of the Braxton County Democratic Executive Committee and served on the design and construction phase of the Braxton County Memorial Hospital. He was an active member of the Central WV Car Club and attended the Christ United Meth odist Church in Sutton. He is also survived by his wife of 25 years, Carolyn Clark Long; a son, Derek Veon Long, of Little Birch; a brother, Darrell Long, of Little Birch; and six sisters, Linda Gillespie, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Janet Harvey, of Danville, Ind., Jean Ward, of Roanoke, Va., Peggy Benton, of Summersville, Becky Cogar, of Gassaway, and Julie Bartlett, of Morgantown. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Pandora Long Wood. Walter Jesse 'Bill' Hauser
Walter Jesse "Bill" Hauser, 87, of Aurora, died Aug. 13, 2000, at home. He was born Jan. 29, 1913, in Stemple Ridge, son of the late Raymond George and Martha Harsh Hauser. He was a lifelong member of the Stemple Ridge United Methodist Church. He also was an active member and past fire chief of the Aurora Fire Department. He was self-employed most of his life in the lumber business. He is survived by three sons and spouses, Walter R. Hauser and Ronald and Sandy Hauser, all of Temperence, Mich., and Raymond and Jean Hauser, of Aurora; three daughters and spouses, Wynona and Jim Buckley, of Seabring, Fla., Shelba and Ernie Sisler, of Grafton, and Wilma and Denny Helmick, of Horse Shoe Run; a sister, Leah Luzier, of Davis; 22 grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Levina Pearl Hauser; five brothers, Wade, Lester, Claudis, Milford and George; and two sisters, Mabel Wiles and Loretta Snyder. Michael Eugene Zieglar, 44, of Masontown, Pa., died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, in Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 6, 1956, in Morgantown, son of the late Earnest M. and Flora Gray Zieglar. He was a member of the First Christian Church of New Salem and was a former member of the St. George Junior Tamburitzans of Cokeburg, Pa. He was an electrician, formerly employed with R.L. Bowman Co. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Judy Newman Zieglar; a brother, Mark S. Zieglar, of Masontown; a twin brother and spouse, Mitchell Allen and Eileen Zieglar, of Uniontown, Pa.; a nephew, Allen Michael Zieglar; maternal grandmother, Frances "Buba" Gray, of Masontown; mother-in-law, Doris Newman, of Smock, Pa; two brothers-in-law and spouses, Samuel J. and Nancy Newman, of Hiller, Pa., and Thomas and Karen Newman, of North Carolina; a brother-in-law, Daniel Newman, of Smock; a special brother-in-la w and spouse, Paul and Tina Newman, of Baltimore; two sisters-in-law and spouses, Susan and Larry Smith, of Smock, and Pat and Rod Stringer, of Kentucky; and 13 nephews and nieces. Ruth Gilroy Pappajohn
Ruth Gilroy Pappajohn, 83, formerly of Linden Street, Morgantown, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 at Sherry's Personal Care Home, Taylortown, Pa. She was born March 31, 1917 in Hazelton, Pa., daughter of the late John James and Emma Mehlbeer Gilroy. She owned and operated Campus Lunch from 1948-1963. She had been employed with the WVU Computer Center and the WVU School of Mines at White Hall, and retired from NIOSH in 1986. She had been a member of Mensa since 1967 and published a regional newsletter for several years. She had also been a member of the Morgantown Music Club and the Great Books Society of Morgantown and the Monongalia Humane Society. She was Methodist. She is survived by three sons and spouses, James and Susan Pappajohn, of Morgantown; John Pappajohn, of Glen Burnie, Md.; and Frank and Sharon Pappajohn, of Alexandria, Va.; and a grandson, Mark Pappajohn. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Pappajohn, in 1980. Cremation will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home. Memorial service will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8, with the Rev. Stacy L. Evelyn M. Kocher
Evelyn M. Kocher, 74, of Garrison Ave., Morgantown, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born Nov. 21, 1925, in Scranton, Pa., daughter of the late Myron L. Sr. and Mildred Hanyen Kocher. She was a member of the Suncrest United Methodist Church, Drummond Chapel Campus, the Chancel Choir at the Church, the American Association of University Women, the American Library Association and the Morgantown Music Club. She earned a bachelor's degree at Meredith College and bachelor's and master's degrees in library science from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill). She was assistant head cataloguer for the WVU Library from 1958-1964; head cataloguer from 1965 until her retirement in 1994 . For many years, she was principal second violin in the WVU Symphony Orchestra and in the first violin section of the Community Arts Orchestra, and a member of the Choral Union. She is survived by her brother, Myron L. Kocher, of Greenville, S.C. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. Thursday and at the Suncrest United Methodist Church, Drummond Chapel Campus, from 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, until the 11 a.m. service, with the Rev. Ronald McCauley officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in the New Rosemont Cemetery in Espy, Pa. Ora John Bennett
Ora John Bennett, 91, of Centerhill Avenue, Morgantown, formerly of Hightstown, N.J., died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 in Morgantown. He was born July 11, 1909 in Jamesburg, N.J., son of the late John D. and Etta Stults Bennett. He was retired as an agriculture salesman for Agway-Farmers Cooperative Association for 53 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hightstown, and the Shrine Crescent Temple in Trenton. He was also a member of the Apollo Lodge, the Scottish Rite and a member of the Autumn Club of Cranbury, N.J. He is survived by a son and spouse, Dr. Larry G. and Sandra Bennett, of Star City; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Silvers, of Hightstown, N.J.; a niece, Ann Elaine Vallaster, of Hightstown; and a nephew and spouse, Bruce and Jeannine Bennett, of Freehold, N. J. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Grover Bennett, in 1989; and a brother, Grover Bennett. Friends may call at the A.S. Cole Funeral Home in Cranbury, N.J. from 7-9 p.m. Sunday.
