Albert J. 'Bates' Correll
Albert J. "Bates" Correll, 87, of West Main Street, Westover, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at MonPointe Continuing Care Center. He was born March 12, 1913, in Morgantown, son of the late James and Tomasina Lepera Correll. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Westover. He was a retired coal miner and commercial painter in Morgantown for many years. He and Sarah George operated Dogs & Subs for many years. He is survived by a sister, Alice Correll, of Westover; a niece, Louise Correll, of Westover; and a nephew, William Correll, of Westover. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, John, Frank, Tony and Joseph Correll; and a sister, Mary Bell. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at East Oak Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Colombo Bandiera officiating. Hastings Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Herman M. Bowers
Herman M. Bowers, 95, of Ross Street, Morgantown, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at MonPointe Continuing Care Center. He was born June 7, 1905, in Upper Track, son of the late James Floren and Carrie Etta Keister Bowers. He was a member of Spruce Street United Methodist Church. He was a long-time employee and retired as assistant director of the Cooperative Extension Service of West Virginia University. He was a member of Rotary for more than 50 years. He was a former member of the Princeton Rotary in Princeton, where he helped organize the Rotary Club Marketing in West Virginia in 1937. He became a member of Morgantown Rotary in 1942. He was also a member of the Epsilon Sigma Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Delta, West Virginia University Emeritus Club, West Virginia Alumni Association, College of Sig and Trestry Association, where he received the Outstanding Alumni Award, West Virginia University Order of Vandalia Award, and he was an enshrinee of the West Virginia Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame. He is survived by a sister and spouse, Jean and Joseph Emch, of Morgantown. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucretia Josephine White Bowers, on Feb. 17, 1992; three brothers and a sister. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 3-6 p.m. Monday. Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30. Burial will follow at Fort Ashby Cemetery in Mineral County. Albert Wayne Layman
Albert Wayne Layman, 78, of West Pike Street, Clarksburg, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Heartland of Clarksburg, after a long illness. He was born in Baxter, son of the late Cecil Layman and Monta Musgrave Layman Sine. He was a 50-year pin member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local No. 152 in Morgantown. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had owned and operated the Layman Lawnmower Repair Service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked in co nstruction as a plumber and pipefitter. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hazel Cain Layman, whom he married Sept. 18, 1945; a son and spouse, Alan W. and Carolyn Layman, of Salem; a daughter and spouse, Judy Kay and Alan Haught, of West Milford; a sister, Lois Maxine Reynolds, of Winchester, Ind.; and six grandchildren and spouses, Cindy Haught, of Clarksburg, Brian and Robin Haught, of Bridgeport, Tracy and Jerry Stire, of Lost Creek, Stanley and Joyce Layman, of Kearneysville, Christopher and Bobby-Jo Layman, of Jane Lew, and Chad and Cry stal Layman, of West Milford. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stanley Virgil Layman, in 1966. Friends may call at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, Clarksburg, from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday. Golda Ann Powell
Golda Ann Powell, 88, of Hurricane, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, after a long illness. She was born Feb. 10, 1912, in Southside. She grew up in Point Pleasant, and after her marriage she lived in McKees Rocks, Pa., Hinton and Morgantown. For the last 25 years, she lived in Hurricane. She was Baptist and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane. She is survived by a son, Skip Powell; two daughters, Nancy Haines and Betsy Henson; four grandsons, John Powell and David Powell, both of Barboursville, and Russell Haines and Richard Kasel, both of Austin, Texas; two granddaughters, Beth Ann Dudley, of Hurricane, and Amy Spicer, of Austin; four great-grandsons, Jeremy Powell and Joey Powell, of Barboursville, Damian Dudley, of Hurricane, and Christian Haines, of Austin; seven great-granddaughters, Jasmine Parsons and Julie Powell, both of Barboursvill e, Ashley Spicer and Mariah Haines, both of Austin, Elaina Sowards and Carina Dudley, both of Hurricane, and Paige Hakala, of Salt Lake City; a great-great-grandson, Benjamin Powell, of Barboursville; two nieces, Mary Jane Stephenson and Barbara Witver; a nephew, Arlie Sutphin; and dear friends, Lula Reed and Bob Greer, of Point Pleasant. She was also preceded in death by her husband, E.G. George Powell; and a grandson, James William Powell. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Funeral Home in Hurricane. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1. Burial will be in Beverly Hills Cemetery, Morgantown, on Thursday afternoon. Darwain Lee
Darwain Lee, 53, of Terra Alta, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at home. He was born June 10, 1947, in Borgman, son of the late Claude David and Anna Pearl Lewis Lee. He attended Terra Alta Church of the Nazarene and worked for Allegheny Wood Products in Kingwood. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Barbara Lee; three sons, Derrick Lee, Curtis Lee and Kyle Lee, all at home; three brothers, Dale Lee, of Terra Alta, Jerry Lee and Carl Lee, both of Oklahoma; and five sisters, Deloris Stemple, of Aurora, Regina Cr owell, of Tennessee, Carolyn Lumpkin, of Terra Alta, Lois Wills, of Sax, Va., and Nancy Wright, of Waynesburg, Pa. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Terry and Robert Lee; and a sister, Joyce Ann Lee. Friends may call at Arthur H. Veronica C. Chekosky
Veronica C. Chekosky, 81, of R.D. 1, Greensboro, Pa., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Rolling Meadows Long Term Care and Rehab Facility, in Waynesburg, Pa. She was born April 5, 1919, in Kenosha, Wis., daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Przybysz Daniel. She spent most of her life in Greene County, but in her youth she lived and worked in New York City. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Greensboro, Pa. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Rose) Popernack, of Hampton, Va., Mrs. Joseph (Mary Lou) Billetz, of Cleveland; a son, Paul Chekosky, of Carmichaels, Pa.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Orville (Regina) Fry , of Hays, Va., Mrs. Edward (Mary) Gilbert, of Carmichaels, Pa., Mrs. Harry (Ceil) Shocket, of Orlando, Fla., Mrs. Charles (Sophia) Stoner, of Palm Bay, Fla., and Mrs. Charles (Agnes) Clark, of Tallmadge, Ohio; and two brothers, Lawrence Daniel, of Detro it, Mich., and Frank Daniel, of Dilliner, Pa. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Peter Chekosky, whom she married Sept. 2, 1940, on Jan. 27, 1996; a sister, Mary Daniel; and two brothers, Joseph Daniel and Stephen Daniel Jr. Friends may call at Louis E. Paul Zaharko
Paul Zaharko, 77, of Rose Dhu Road, Savannah, Ga., formerly of Newport Street, Westover, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Memorial Medical University Health Center in Savannah, Ga. He was born Jan. 23, 1924, in Masontown, son of the late Michael and Anna Breska Zaharko. He was a member of St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Westover. He was a U.S. Navy pilot in World War II. He graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in chemistry. He owned and operated Met-Fin Co. in Morgantown. He is survived by three daughters, Debra A. Wertman, of Charleston, Paula S. Zaharko, of Savannah, and Norma Jean Smith, of Morgantown; two sons, Alan P. Zaharko, of Savannah, and Timothy P. Zaharko, of Morgantown; a grandson, Jason M. Wertman, of Atlant a; a great-grandson, Skyler Zaharko; and a sister, Ann Kincaid, of Charleston. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Irene Loya Zaharko, on Aug. 11, 1995. Loretta Mae Naylor
Loretta Mae Naylor, 81, of Smithfield, Pa., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at home. She was born April 7, 1919, in Crellin, Md., daughter of the late Charles and Mila Moats Shipp. She was a nurse's aide, having worked at the former St. Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia University Hospital and retired from Monongalia General Hospital. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Naylor, of Smithfield; two sons, Delmar Naylor, of Strongsville, Ohio, and Robert Naylor, of Point Marion, Pa.; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Delmar Naylor, in 1966, and was the last of 12 children, having been preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters. Friends may call at Richard R. Donald J. Straight
Donald J. Straight, 82, of Bentons Ferry, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg. He was born May 24, 1918, in Fairmont, son of the late Glenn Howard and Mary A. Lakin Straight. He graduated from Barrackville High School in 1936. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, earning the Purple Heart during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 629 and United Mine Workers Association District 31. He retired as a coal miner from Barrackville Bethlehem Steel with more than 20 years of service. He was a Christian. He was an avid gardener who enjoyed yard work. As a young man, he was an all-sport and all-county athlete from Barrackville who played baseball, basketball and football. He attended Fairmont State College for two years on a sports scholarship before having to quit in order to take care of family matt ers. He especially enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren. He is survived by a daughter, Donna Marie Straight Ware, of Bentons Ferry; three brothers, Richard "Dick" Lee Straight, of Barrackville, John Howard Straight, of Indiana, and George Edward Straight, of Diamond, Ohio; a sister, Doris "Sis" Janeen Simms, o f Kent, Ohio; two grandchildren, Crystal Dawn Ware, of Fairmont, and Robert Harrison Ware II, at home; and two great-grandchildren, Levi Harrison Ware and Baylie Morgan Rager-Ware. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Francis Hardway Straight, on March 12, 1987; an infant daughter, Nancy Straight; three brothers, William Edwin Straight, Thomas Straight and Kenneth Lakin Straight; and a sister, Mildred "Toots" Belle Trisl er. The body was cremated. A memorial service will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens at a later date, with the Rev. Andrew Lucas officiating. Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Freda Louise Fordyce
Freda Louise Fordyce, 75, of McMurray, Pa., formerly of Wadestown, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Canonsburg Hospital, Canonsburg, Pa. She was born May 20, 1925, in Wadestown, daughter of the late John E. and Rosetta Wright Criss. She was a member of West Warren Baptist Church in Wadestown and had lived with her sister, Katherine Moran, and niece Carla Sauer in McMurray, for 14 years. She was well-known as a nanny. She is survived by four sisters, Thelma Fordyce, of Munhall, Pa., Wilma Whittaker, of Wadestown, Katherine Moran, of McMurray, Pa. and Jean Schell, of Mount Oliver, Pa. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Fordyce, on Jan. 19, 1984; a daughter, Karen Sue Criss; two brothers; and three sisters. Larry Eugene Furman
Larry Eugene Furman, 53, of Fairmont, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg. He was born May 25, 1947, in Morgantown, son of the late William Arnold Furman and Alma Merle Wright Furman, of Youngstown, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War from 1967-1968. He worked at Western Sizzlin' and Holiday Inn as a dishwasher and Marble Craft as a sink stripper. He graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1964. He attended Fairmont State C ollege for two years. He enjoyed watching professional wrestling and football, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a member of the Victory Baptist Church and past member of the VFW. He is also survived by his wife of 35 years, Betty McLaughlin Furman, whom he married Jan. 23, 1966; a son and spouse, John Eric and Staci Furman, of Fairmont; three daughters, Crystal Diane Knapp, of Lowell, Mass., Jennifer Kathleen Bunch, of Fairmont, and Lynn Marie Furman, of Fairmont; two brothers, Randy Allen Furman, of Youngstown, and David Russell Furman, of Olathe, Kan.; two sisters and spouses, Shirley Ann Furman, of Youngstown, and Rose Marie and Robert Heston, of Fairmont; a foster sister and spouse, Eleanor and William Mott, of Fairmont; and two grandchildren, Jarrod Allen Knapp, and Harland Ronald Knapp, both of Lowell. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald Lee Furman, and Allen Dale Furman, who died in infancy; a sister in infancy, Gloria Jean Furman; and foster parents, Nick and Martha Vukovich. Raymond W. St. Clair
Raymond W. St. Clair, 82, of Warren, Ohio, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren. He was born Dec. 5, 1918, in Star City, son of the late Raymond W. and Martha Stafford St. Clair. He was a foreman of substation maintenance from Ohio Edison, retiring after 32 years on March 1, 1981. He enjoyed caring for his home and lawn and liked electrical and carpentry work. He was a Mason and a member of Prospect Lodge AF&AM of Prospect, Ohio. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor, serving on the USS Phoenix during the attack. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1940-46. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and made a solo cross-country trip from Ohio to Richland, Wash., to visit his siste r. He is survived by his wife, whom he married May 30, 1943, Helen Vance St. Clair; two sons, Thomas R. St. Clair, and Timothy L. St. Clair, both of Warren; a sister, AnnaMae Crigler, of Richland; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Friends may call at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, 533 N. Kathryn L. Fenn
Kathryn L. Fenn, 92, formerly of West Park Avenue, in Westover, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at MonPointe Continuing Care Center. She was born Jan. 13, 1909, in Springfield, Ohio, daughter of the late Bernard and Cerelda Pettet. She did hospital volunteer work in Florida during her retirement. She was Baptist. She is survived by two sons and spouse, Ronald and Christine Fenn, of Morgantown; and Sydney Fenn Jr., of Dallas; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Sydney Fenn Sr., in 1984; a daughter, Louise Fenn, in 1958; and three brothers and two sisters. Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation. Private graveside services will be held at Lawnwood Cemetery at the family's convenience.

Jerald Cooke
Jerald Raymond Cooke, infant son, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born Jan. 26, 2001, in Morgantown, son of Scott and Katherine Misco Cooke, of Morgantown. He is also survived by two brothers, Terry Richards Jr., of Carnegie, Pa., and Israel Richards, at home; a paternal grandfather, Gerald Cooke, of Waynesburg, and a paternal grandmother, Katherine Patterson, of Charleston, S.C. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Raymond and Gladys Misco. Private service was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Junior Koon officiating. McCulla Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
