Frances Shriver Dague
Frances Shriver Dague, 83, of Washington, Pa., formerly of Houston, Pa., died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at home. She was born March 16, 1917, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Forest O. and Katie Sims Shriver. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Washington. She graduated from Morgantown High School in 1933, and West Virginia University in 1937. She served as postmaster of the Houston Post Office for 27 years, retiring in 1980. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Anne Dague, of Phoenix, and Eran May Severn, of Big Sky, Montana; two sisters, Nancy Ridgeway, of Greenville, Pa., and Alice May Bender, of Laurel, Md.; and three granddaughters, Elizabeth Severn-Eriksson, Katie Severn-Klooster, and Meg Ringer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, whom she married Oct. 30, 1937, R. Conwell Dague, who died serving in World War II on May 28, 1945; and a brother, Donald Shriver. Barbara Jean Spencer, 72, of Sanford Community, Fairmont, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. Marjorie M. Stump
Marjorie M. Stump, 75, of Terra Alta, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Preston Memorial Hospital. She was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Terra Alta, daughter of the late Ira Lee Lee and Nita Muriel Sanders Stahl. She was a member of Whitedale Cooperative Brethren Church in Terra Alta. She was a homemaker. She is survived by a daughter, Ann Kight, of Mount Lake Park, Md.; four sons and spouses, Billy and Kim Stump, of Terra Alta, David L. and Sherry Stump, of Cumberland, Md., Donald Steve Stump, of Terra Alta, and Denny and Tanya Stump, of Oakland, Md.; a brother, Floyd "Bud" Stahl, of Stella, N.C.; a sister, Aletha Spahr, of Terra Alta; nine grandchildren, Kimberly Kisner, Melissa Alexander, John Strawser Jr. and Shawn and Mikaila Strawser, and Billy, Jake, Ricky and Ashley Stump; and six great-grandchil dren. Ruby E. Frantz
Ruby E. Frantz, 71, of Terra Alta, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at home. She was born Nov. 1, 1929, in Cuzzart, daughter of the late Jesse Oscar and Goldie Mae Miller Casteel. She was a member of Whitedale Brethren Church and recently attended Hillcrest Chapel, Terra Alta. She worked at Sterling Processing in Oakland for 10 years and Hopemont State Hospital for 10 years. She is survived by seven daughters, Cleta Fike, Linda Hall, Vickie Stemple and Tammy Ringer, all of Terra Alta, Phyllis Wilson, of Amhurst, Ohio, Karen Lambert, of Mount Lake Park, Md., and Terri Wotring, of Cranesville; a brother, William Casteel, of Co rinth; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert William Frantz, in 1982; four sisters, Bonnie Roberts, Izetta Martin, Lucy and Nadine Casteel; and a brother, Nelson Casteel. Johnnie J. Belldina
Johnnie J. Belldina, 50, of Westover, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001. He was born Dec. 9, 1950, in Morgantown, son of Elena Gutta Belldina of Westover and the late John T. Belldina. He was a truck driver for Robert M. Neff Trucking Co., Hebron, Ohio. He was a U.S. Army veteran and Catholic. He enjoyed fishing. He is also survived by his wife, Linda Barill Belldina; a son, Johnnie J. "JJ" Belldina, of Westover; a daughter and spouse, Melissa and Cliff Kazarian, of Morgantown; a grandson, Riley Kazarian; and a brother, Carmen Belldina, of Westover. Jeanette Poe
Jeanette Arnett Clayton Poe, 87, of Wishing Well Manor, formerly of the Monumental and Meadowdale communities, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born Aug. 13, 1913, in Baxter, daughter of the late Will R. and Lona Arnett Clayton. She was educated in Marion County schools, including Fairview High School and Fairmont State College. In 1977, her family was recognized as Marion County Soil Conservation Service Farm Family of the Year. In 1985, she was inducted into the West Virginia Agricultural & Forestry Hall of Fame. Her commitment to the farming community included more than 50 years of participation in the W.Va. Extension Homemakers, where she was president of both the Winfield an d Monumental clubs, president of the Marion County Council, State Council secretary and Morgantown area representative. She also served as a member of the State Council Board of Directors and as a member of statewide committees. She was a member of the Fairview Chapter of the Federated Farm Women's Club for more than 30 years, a board representative to the Agriculture Hall of Fame Foundation, the Country Life National Conference and the Farm and Home Electrification Council. She was co-editor of "West Virginia Treasured Recipes" cookbook, published in 1974. She was a member of the Southern States Women's Auxiliary. She was a member and club leader of the Marion County 4-H and a long-time officer of the Meadowdale School PTA. She served the Meadowdale Methodist Church as director of the Vacation Bible School, as a church trustee, Sunday school teacher and officer of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Winfield District Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, the Winfield District Fair Committee and a member of the Farmers Home Administration Committee for Marion County. She was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader who reviewed new books for the W.Va. Library Commission through the Extension Homemakers' State Reading Committee, which she belonged to for more than 30 years. She also enjoyed needlework, gardening, canning and bread making. She is survived by three sons and spouses, Daniel C. and Elizabeth Poe, Ned F. and Judy Poe, and Steven D. and Susannah Poe, all of Monumental; five grandchildren, Jan Lee Poe, of Hagans, Shelly Lynn Poe and Allen Dean Poe, of Morgantown, Jill Suzanne Po e, of Allison Park, Pa., and Matthew Clayton Poe, of Monumental; four great-grandchildren, Christopher, Janalee, Joyanna and Joshua; and a brother and spouse, Francis B. and Rose Poe, of Fairmont. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Howard W. Poe; a brother, Marshall Clayton; and five sisters, Mabel Furman, Olive McNeely, Corrine Clayton, Elberta Bosley and Lilly Clayton. Marion T. Pyles
Marion T. Pyles, 81, of Friendship Manor, Morgantown, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Sundale Nursing Home. He was born Nov. 2, 1919, in Tunnelton, son of the late Jerome and Florence Moore Pyles. He was a graduate of the WVU College of Engineering and was formerly employed by McCutcheon Mines and the state of West Virginia. He is survived by a son, Richard A. Pyles, of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Nancy Boshell, of New Martinsville, and Marian Payne, of Bryan, Texas; four grandchildren, Joseph Payne, Lora Van Camp, Debbie Pyles and Shana Miller. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Louise Pyles; a granddaughter, Michelle Rene Payne. Private graveside services and burial will be in Shaw Cemetery at Denver in Preston County. Dering's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nathan Ness
Nathan Ness, 85, of Morgantown, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born in New York City, son of the late Anna and David Ness. He was a professor emeritus at West Virginia University's Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, where he taught from 1964 to recently. He received his Ph.D. from Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1952. He was a volunteer at Ruby Memorial Hospital since 1988. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Tree of Life Congregation, the B'nai Brith, and many philanthropic organizations. He is survived by his wife, Frances Ness; a son and spouse, Lawrence and Deborah Ness; two granddaughters, Gloria and Heather Ness, all of Reston, Va.; a brother and spouse, Hyman and Bernice Ness, of Cranbury, N.J.; and two nieces and a nephew. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Sylvia Cole. His body was donated to the Human Gift Registry, Department of Anatomy at WVU. A memorial service will be held at future date. Mary Scott
Mary Scott, 101, of Fairmont, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Alliance Personal Care Home in Grafton. She was born Feb. 8, 1900, at Beverly, daughter of the late Sterling Price and Lizzie White Scott. She taught public school for more than 30 years in Tucker and Marion counties, finishing her career at White School in Fairmont. She was a graduate of Fairmont State College. She also attended Shepherd College and the National College of Education, in Ev anston, Ill. She was a member of First Methodist Church in Fairmont, where she taught Sunday school for several years. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mildred Scott, of Huntington; three nieces, Eva Marie Gurganus, of Virginia Beach, Va., Dorothy Beasley, of Norfolk, Va., and Susan Dunston, of Centreville, Va.; and two nephews, Richard H. Scott, of Chambersburg, Pa ., and Robert S. Scott, of Winter Park, Fla. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Kent Scott and Robert F. Scott; and two sisters, Margaret Scott Lake and Lelia Eddie Scott. Service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, in Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. Martha Gaskill-Harmon
Martha J. Gaskill-Harmon, 70, of Okeechobee, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at HCA Raulerston Hospital, Okeechobee. She was born March 17, 1930, in Fairmont, daughter of the late Charles and Marie Gaskill. She was employed with Harmon's Upholstering and worked for Okeechobee Junior High School. She is survived by a daughter, Gloria Allen; three sons, George, Glenn and Gordon Harmon, all of Okeechobee; two sisters, Geraldine Mercer, of Wadestown, and Vera Drain, of Booth; four brothers, Harry Gaskill, of Gray, Ga., Charles, Dave and Vance Gaskil l, all of Morgantown; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Gregory Harmon; several sisters and brothers. There were no funeral services. McCulla Funeral Home is in charge of obituary information.

Mary Clevenger
Mary Ennis Clevenger, 90, of Brushy Fork Road, Bridgeport, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Clarksburg Continuous Care. She was born Sept. 28, 1910, in Harrison County, daughter of the late William and Melvina White Evans. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for several years. She was a member of the Trinity Homemakers group for 60 years. She is survived by her husband, Lester Clevenger, whom she married Oct. 16, 1926; a son and spouse, Charles William and Ruth Clevenger, of Brushy Fork Road; two grandchildren, William Clevenger, of Decatur, Ill., and Mary Marie Tucker, of Flemington; and six great-grandchildren, Scott, Jonathon, Stephen and Michael Clevenger, Melissa Nicholson and Shawn Tucker. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Mason Ennis; a sister, Maxine Sigley; and two stepsisters, Ava Greathouse and Daisy Clevenger. Friends may call at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Mary Lemley
Mary Mandy Lemley, 82, of Glovers Gap, Metz community, Mannington, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born April 8, 1919, in Wetzel County, daughter of the late Bea and Nora McDiffitt Fluharty. She was a caretaker of the elderly for several years. She was a member of Glovers Gap United Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilting. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Sheila and Steve Merrill, of Glovers Gap; two grandchildren, Stephanie Merrill and Steven Merrill; and a sister, Ora Cutlip, of Connecticut. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Chester Lemley, on Feb. 18, 1978; a sister, Ruby Frum; and a grandson, William Merrill. Sharon Harker
Sharon Harker, 54, of Crossroads community, Fairview, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 30, 1946, in Fairview, daughter of Norma Jean Seaman Tuttle, of Crossroads, and the late James F. "Jimmie" Tuttle. She was a homemaker and co-owner of Circle H Farms. She was known for her love of horses and her work as a horse trainer. She was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and a past member of the Tri-State Quarter Horse Association. She was Met hodist. She is also survived by her husband, Darrell E. "Gene" Harker; a daughter, Sherry Harker, of Crossroads; a good friend, Karen Stiles, of Wana; aunts and uncles, Lucy Henderson, of Dayton, Pa., Otis and Mildred Parker, of Beverly Hills, Fla., Edgar "Bud" and Lora Seaman, of Fairview, William "Bill" and Amy Seamon, of Core, Jane and Harold Varner, of Pentress; and several cousins. Ernest 'Weenie' Gabler
Ernest S. "Weenie" Gabler, 84, of Greensboro, Pa., died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Uniontown Hospital, Uniontown, Pa. He was born Aug. 13, 1916, in Mon View, Nicholson Township, Pa., son of the late William E. and Eva Marie Dillinger Gabler. He was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Greensboro, Pa. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, having served with the U.S. Navy. While in service he attended the University of Illinois Naval Training School and studied di esel engines. He worked for eight years as a licensed riverboat pilot for the Greensboro and New Geneva Ferry Co. He later worked for 39 years as a head riverman at Duquesne Light Co., Warwick Mine, Greensboro. He founded the Monongahela River Buff's Ass ociation, where he was known as the "Mark Twain of the Monongahela." His name and picture are included in the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., and can be seen on the U.S. Navy Memorial Web site. His many memberships include: Scoutmaster of Troop 1, Greensboro, for 30 years, where he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding community service; charter and life member of Greensboro VFW Post 6303; life member of the U.S. Naval Institute, Annapolis, Md.; American Legion Post 423, Masontown, Pa.; UMW Local6310. His hobby was building model boats out of balsa wood, which he began doing while on duty at the Naval base in Sasebo, Japan, aboard the tugboat USS Osceola, YTB 129. The YTB 129 was the first model he made from a piece of balsa wood, completely carved with a pocketknife. Upon his return from service, he began making models of the steamboats on the Monongahela River. After completing the model of the Sternwheeler Swan, he donated it to the River Museum in Marietta, Ohio. Two sternwheelers, the Marion (5 feet long) and the Kittanning (9 feet long) are on loan to the U.S. Corps of Engineers of the Headwater District, Pittsburgh. The Bryants Showboat and the Sternwheeler Valley Belle are on loan to the Balch Institute in Philadelphia. He also made models of ferryboats, coal barges, flat boats and various houseboats. Some of these models are on display at local museums and restaurants. He is survived by a sister, Edith Ganoe, of Masontown, Pa.; a brother, Richard Gabler, of Bobtown, Pa. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Grula Gabler, in 1983; two sisters, Avarala Mae and Jessie Gabler; three brothers, William, Robert Roy and Leroy Gabler. Friends may call at Louis E. Louis E. Nickler
Louis E. Nickler, 82, of Greensboro, Pa., died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born Oct. 20, 1918, in Tower Hill, Fayette County, Pa., son of the late John and Sophia Josephine Vinter Nickler. He was a 1937 graduate of Mapletown High School and resided in Greensboro since 1933. He was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Morgantown and owned and operated the Greensboro Flower Shop from 1959-74. He also was a rural mail c arrier for 19 years and worked at several local mines, including Hillman Coal Co. at Poland, the Duquesne Light Warwick Mine and Bethlehem Steel Corp. Marianna Mine. He is survived by his wife, Ella Frances Ross, whom he married on Dec. 5, 1942; a son and spouse, Vaughn E. and Virginia Nickler, of Bobtown, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Karen J.) Bern, of Morgantown, and Mrs. Thomas (Deborah L.) Bern, of Kingwood; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Mocniak, Lauren Nickler, Kelly Reed, Marc Huchette, Charlie Bern Jr., Benjamin Bern and Christopher Bern; four stepgrandchildren, Reyne Duranko, Lee Duranko, Jeffrey Duranko and Michael Duranko; five great-grandchildren; an d a brother, Joseph Nickler, of Newark, Del. Eleanor M. S. Falkenstein
Eleanor M. Stanley Falkenstein, 79, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at her home at Bentons Ferry. She was born April 4, 1921, daughter of the late M. Bert and Esther Barnes Stanley. She was a graduate of East Fairmont High School and Fairmont State College. She was a teacher at the former Fairmont Junior High School and taught kindergarten at Valley Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a lifelong member of Bentons Ferry United Me thodist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Janice Falkenstein Denison; two sons and a spouse, Richard Falkenstein and Eric and Elizabeth Falkenstein, all of Fairmont; a sister, Ruth Stanley Yeager, of Baltimore; a sister-in-law, Doris Satterfield Stanley, of Bentons Ferry; five grandchildren and spouses, Derek and Monica Cross Falkenstein, of Fairmont, Stephanie Denison and Greg Mairs, of Pittsburgh, Ryan Falkenstein, of Pickerington, Ohio, and Shawn Falkenstein and Megan Denison, both of Morgantown. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leo F. Falkenstein; an infant son, Scott Falkenstein; a brother, Robert M. Stanley; and a brother-in-law, William Yeager. There will no visitation as she donated her body to WVU. A memorial service will be held at Bentons Ferry United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, with the Rev. James Norton officiating. Dr. George E. Schafer
Dr. George E. Schafer, 81, of Bakers Ridge, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born Dec. 11, 1919, in Cincinnati, Ohio, son of the late Earl Rogers and Gladys Corn Schafer. He was educated in the public schools in Madison, Wis., and received a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Wisconsin in 1941, a master's in music from the Eastman School of Music in 1949 and his Ph.D. from Eastman in 1954. He taught at the University of Arkansas School of Music for two years and was on the faculty of the WVU College of Creative Arts Division of Music for 28 years. He retired as professor emeritus in 1982. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in France after the D-Day invasion. He also served in Belgium and Germany. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he was a former choir director and organist. He was a member and former secretary of the Morgantown Kiwanis Club for many years and was made an honorary life member in 1982. He was a driver for Meals-on- Wheels from 1982 until recently and served as president of the organization in the 1980s. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Parker Schafer; two sons and a spouse, John Schafer, of Silver Spring, Md., and David and Anna Schafer, of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; a daughter, Marjory Gray, of Charleston; three grandchildren, Emily Schafer, of Glenside, Pa ., Kate Schafer and Carrie Schafer, of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; and a sister, Margaret Maurstad, of Charleston, S.C. Friends may call at Trinity Episcopal Church from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday, Feb. 20, with the Rev. Kirk Haas officiating. Private burial will be in East Oak Grove Cemetery. Donna M. Brunetti Steele
Donna M. Brunetti Steele, 39, of 1102 Taylor St., Clarksburg, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at home after a long illness. She was born Sept. 17, 1961, in Clarksburg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dominick "Smitty" Brunetti, of Clarksburg. She was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and a 1983 graduate of Fairmont State College with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. She received her master's degree in special education from WVU. She was a first-grade teacher at North View Elementary School in the Harrison County School System, and had been a special education teacher at Adamston Elementary School. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Stonewood, where she was active with the youth group. She is survived by her husband, Patrick Steele, whom she married Aug. 16, 1996; a son, Samuel Steele, at home; three brothers and spouses, Sam Anthony and Rebecca Brunetti, of Clarksburg, Dominick "Duke" and Barbara Brunetti, of Bridgeport, and John Mich ael and Michele Brunetti, of Huntington; a sister and spouse, Rose and Jack Bennett, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was preceded in death by her mother, Rose Utzie Brunetti. Friends may call at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, from noon-9 p.m. Tuesday, with a Vigil service at 3 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Stone wood with Father Ed Sabo officiating. Mary Cecilia Stehury
Mary Cecilia Stehury, 89, of 547 Baltimore St., Clarksburg, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Meadowview Manor, Bridgeport. She was born June 6, 1911, in Shinnston, daughter of the late John Stehury and Mary Starincak Stehury. She was retired from Continental Can Co. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Clarksburg. She is survived by a nephew, Michael S. Faron Sr., of Clarksburg; two great-nieces, Roberta A. Davis and Elsa M. Davis, both of Clarksburg; a great-nephew, Michael S. Faron Jr., of Philadelphia; two great-great nieces, Donna Shingleton and Mary Catherine Faron; and two great-great-nephews, Michael Davis and Kristopher Burgess. Friends may call at Bartolo Funeral Home, 515 West Pike St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Catholic burial rites will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the funeral home with Father Cesidio J. Frederico officiating. Burial will f ollow in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Helen L. Mullard
Helen L. Mullard, 51, of Carolina, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 12, 1950, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Oliver and Mildred Metheny Bowers. She was raised in Terra Alta and graduated from Terra Alta High School. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Mullard; a son, Phillip Mullard, of Hanover, Pa.; three daughters, Diane Mullard, Ruth Mullard and Janice Mullard, all of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother and spouse, Tom and Marianne Bowers, of Riverside, Calif.; and a hal f-sister, Olive Bowers, of Philippi. Friends may call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from noon-2 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, with the Rev. Edward Ray officiating.
