Charles 'Chuck' Welty
Charles William "Chuck" Welty, 99, of Highland Avenue, Fairmont, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at home. He was born April 28, 1901, in Mount Pleasant, Pa., son of the late Charles Frederick "Pop" and Elizabeth Ann Murphy Welty. He was assistant mine foreman for Bethlehem Mine Corp., Barrackville. He started in the mines in February 1915 in Grant Town and retired in 1966, after 51 years as an underground coal miner. At the time of his death he was the oldest member of the Fairmont Elks Lodge. He joined in 1925. He was an avid barbershop singer, charter member of SPEBSQSA of Fairmont charter and in the late 1950s was president of the Fairmont chapter. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Virginia Wisman Welty; five sons and three spouses, Carl Frederick "Fritz" and Dorothy Welty, of Greensburg, Pa., Michael Flemming "Mickey" and Leah Welty, of Fairmont, Terrance Braden Welty, of Annapolis, Md., Joseph and Diana Welty, of Monongah, and Mark Allen Welty, of Aberdeen, N.C.; a daughter and spouse, Joan Welty and William Scoot, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 16 grandchildren, Janet Lawson, Jean McFadden, Steven Welty, Paul Welty, Wendy Fetsko, Samuel Welty, A nnette Welty, Michele Welty, Curt, Michael and Jennifer Scot, Stephanie Sykes, Debbie VanDenberg, Amy Cobasky, Kevin Welty and Amanda Welty; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Martha Hartstang. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Terry, Frank, James "Dee," and Tom Welty; and two sisters, Nellie Molenock and Elizabeth Welty. Elks Ritual will be at 8 p.m. Sunday. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, at Saint Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Leonard Smith as celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Evelyn Gertrude Cress
Evelyn Gertrude Cress, 80, of Wren Lane, Morgantown, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at home. She was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Tucker County, daughter of the late Roy Kessler Brown and Florence Augusta Rowe Hibbs. She was a longtime resident of Crown and was formerly employed by Owens-Illinois glass factory in Fairmont. She was a member of the Arnettsville Farm Women's Association and was a member of Arnettsville Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed bowling and sports. She is survived by two sons, Marvin M. Cress, of Waynesburg, Pa. and Jack L. Cress, of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters and spouse, Shelby J. and Charles Sponsler, of Morgantown, and Donna L. Pigott, of Fairmont; a sister, Maxine Jenkins, of Cortland, Ohio; six grandchildren and spouses, Dr. Jeffrey L. Sponsler and spouseCharlotte M. Nelson, of Morgantown, Rory Ty Sponsler, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Tina Louise and Mike Main, and Roy Cress, of Waynesburg, Bradley Pigott, of Fairmont, and Lisa Cress, of Nor th Carolina; and three great-grandchildren, Jason and Jesse Cress, and Sarah Grace Main. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Miles S. "Jackie" Cress, in 1970; and three sisters, Genevieve Robey, Ruth Brown and Josephine Brown. Rose Riggi
Rose Riggi, 92, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at St. Barbara's Nursing Home in Monongah. She was born July 21, 1908, in Beech, daughter of the late John and Mary Caputo Alevato Allowatt. She is survived by three daughters and spouse, Mary Jane and Norman Pickstone, of Ohio, Frances Pickstone, of Fairmont, and Shirley Batiste, of Mentor, Ohio; two sons and spouses, Johnny and Lucy Riggi, of Fairmont, and Ronnie and Linda Riggi, of Grove City, Pa.; three sisters, Isabel Donini, Armeada Bush, of Fairmont, and Mary Finelli, of Elkland, Pa; 10 grandchildren, Norman J. Pickstone, Nancy Morgan, Jo Marie Howard, Michael Riggi, all of Fairmont, Dr. Steven Pickstone, Kimberly Smoley, and Michael Batiste, all of Ohio, Ronnie Riggi, Patty and Linda Pickstone, all of Pennsylvania; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tony Riggi, June 25, 1987; a son, Sammy "Babe" Riggi; a grandson, Bobby Riggi; a son-in-law, Michael Batiste; a infant son, Vallie; two brothers, Joseph and Frank Allowatt; and a sister, Antoinette Andrews. Charles Daft
Charles R. Daft, 76, of Bridgeport, formerly of No. 9 community near Farmington, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at home. He was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Mill Creek, son of the late Cecil and Bessie Daft. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Idamay. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, having seen action in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and several other medals. He was retired from the Consolidated Coal Co., Blacksville No. 2 Mine. His hobbies were fishing, drawing, gardening and photography. He is survived by two daughters and spouse, Barbara L. Daft, of Bridgeport, and Susan and Herbert Buckhannon, of Shinnston; two sons and spouses, Charles S. and Jennefer Daft, of Fairmont, Ind., and Richard and Ramona Daft, of Bridgeport; a brother, Lewis Daft, of Fairmont; a sister, Norma Johnson, of Worthington; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Daft, whom he helped raise, Stephanie Weaver, of Indiana, James Daft, of Indiana, Chad Daft, of Whitehall, Marjorie Fultineer, of Mill Fall, Paula Shriver, of Los t Creek, Carolyn Buckhannon, of Fairmont, and Steven Buckhannon, of Enterprise; six great-grandchildren, Mykena Buckhannon, Dakota Lambert Fulkner, Noah Daft, Jonah Richard Daft, Chanse Weaver and Kylar Daft; and a special friend, Beatrice Martin. Bessie Kisner
Bessie Mabel Casteel Kisner, 76, of Morgantown, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at home. She was born Nov. 27, 1924, in Kingwood, daughter of the late Ephram and Iva Jane Thomas Casteel. She was Methodist, born again March 29, 1991. She was employed at Thoughtfulness Inc., Granville. She is survived by four sons, Jim "Scott" Kisner, Harvey Donald Kisner Jr., Terry Ray Kisner, and Danny Joe Kisner, all of Morgantown; two daughters, Linda Kisner Garletts, of Morgantown, and Judy Kisner Dinda, of Greensburg, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lettie Gibson, Annie Cale and Barbara Foster, all of Morgantown; and a brother, Franklin Casteel, of Morgantown. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Donald Kisner, in 1989; a son, Donald Lee Kisner; three sisters, Betty Jean Casteel, Mary Everly and Ruby Sealy; and three brothers, Alva Casteel, Billie Casteel and Oscar Casteel. Harold G. Lemley
Harold G. Lemley, 79, of Wildwood, Fla., formerly of Greene County, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Leesburg Regional Hospital, Leesburg, Fla. He was born Oct. 14, 1921, in Mount Morris, Pa., son of the late Arthur and Pearl Lemley. He lived most of his life in Greene County, and had resided in Wildwood since 1985. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Waynesburg while living in Greene County, and the First Christian Church of Leesburg while in Florida. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a carpenter and cabinet maker, and owned and operated the Valley Cabinet Shop, in Greene County, since 1956, retiring in 1985. He was the last living member of his immediate family. He is survived by his second wife, Janet Onkst Lemley, whom he married Jan. 22, 1986; a daughter, Patricia E. Lippencott, of Waynesburg, Pa.; two sons, Bruce A. Lemley, of Waynesburg, and Dan G. Lemley, of Beaver, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Jeanne L. Steiner, William A. Lemley, Emily R. Lemley, Laura L. Reiber, Lorraine L. Lemley, Heather Gawne and Nathan A. Lippencott; and five great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen McCord Lemley, whom he married May 10, 1943, and who died Oct. 10, 1983; a brother and sister who were twins and died in infancy, Lewis and Lucille Lemley; and two brothers, Robert Gordon Lemley and Donzel Lemley. Betty Morris
Betty W. Morris, 76, of North Liberty Street, Waynesburg, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at home. She was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Waynesburg, daughter of the late Ernest and Ada Gertrude Cumberledge Ward. She was a housewife and mother, and had resided for most of her life in Waynesburg. She is survived by two sons, J. William "Bill" Morris, of Waynesburg, and Jerry Morris, of Oak Forest; a daughter, Patty Bennett, of Waynesburg; eight grandchildren, Jamie Morris, Clint Morris, Brett Morris, Scott Morris, Tammy Eddy, Tracy Morris, Lisa Gillogly and Joey Morris; five sisters, Helen Morris, of Waynesburg, Dorothy Jennings, of Cortland, Ohio, Peggy Sellers, of Eustis, Fla., Vaunda Davis, of Palmyra, Ind., and Mary Braddock, of Waynesburg; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William N. Donald Glenn Curnette
Donald Glenn Curnette, 72, of Fairmont, Monumental Community, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born July 11, 1928, in Montana Mines Community, son of the late Reuben W. and Rosa Ann Jones Curnette. He retired from Alcan Aluminum in Fairmont after 25 years of service. He had also owned and operated Tom's Confectionary on Haymond Street in Fairmont for 10 years. He was an active member of the BPOE No. 294 Elks Club of Fairmont. He helped with bingo and was honored as Elk of the Year 2000-2001. He was a good neighbor and friend, as well as a loving and devoted husband and father. He enjoyed woodworking. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Conner Curnette; a son and spouse, Donald Glenn and Patricia A. Curnette, of Smithfield, Va.; two brothers, Charles Chester Curnette, of Morgantown, and Robert Drexel Curnette, of Greencastle, Pa.; and a sister, Dorothy Pauline Cummings, of Fairmont. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rubin Worth Curnette Jr. and Eugene Ross Curnette; four half-brothers, William Haskel Curnette, James Walter Curnette, Willart Jack Curnette and Omar Denver Curnette; and three half sisters, Grace Elizabeth Curnette, Mabel Ann Curnette Watson and Mary Catherine Austin. John Powers Taylor
John Powers Taylor, 49, of Mayville, N.Y., formerly of Terra Alta, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at St. Vincent's Medical Center, Erie, Pa., following a brief illness. He was born Oct. 23, 1951, in Daytona Beach, Fla., son of Charles and June Thomas, of Terra Alta. He was Presbyterian. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a commercial truck owner-operator for many years. He is also survived by three brothers, David Thomas, of Terra Alta, Jeffrey Taylor, of Severna Park, Md., and Mark Thomas, of Seattle; a sister, Lynn Hawkins, of Morgantown; and six nephews and nieces. Services will be in Mayville, N.Y., and in Terra Alta at a later date. Burial will be in Lenox Memorial Cemetery, Lenox. Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, is in charge of arrangements.

Anna Belle Hoover
Anna Belle Hoover, 94, of Bruceton Mills, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at the home of Margie and Bob McPherson, her caregivers. She was born July 10, 1906, in the Greenville Community, Preston County, daughter of the late Mintare Addison and Mary Lucinda Speelman Everly. She was a member of the Hopewell United Methodist-Baptist Union Church, Harmony Rebekah Lodge 51 IOOF, and Dostana Zuanna 104 LOTO of Morgantown. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was also the last known surviving member of the Smithfield High School class of 1928, from which she graduated as salutatorian. She later completed office training school in Uniontown, Pa. She is survived by two daughters and spouses, Rhea Faye and Donald Reckart, of Montgomery, Ala., and Katherine and Troy Forman, of Morgantown; two sons and spouses, Delford and Helen Hoover, of Bruceton Mills, and Charles and Helen Hoover, of Morgantown; eight grandchildren, Edward, Richard and Allan Reckart, Debora Reckart Sluder, Sharon Reckart Tampling, David Hoover, Kathie Forman and Cindy Hoover Dalton; a step-grandson, Randy Miller; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Pierce G. Hoover; three sisters, Emma Ryan, Lillie Fowler and Goldie Fowler Bard; and two brothers, Charles Dayton Everly, and Alvy Ray Everly. Andrew White
Andrew White, 92, of Flint, Mich., died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Genesys Convalescent Center, Flint, Mich. He was born Nov. 19, 1908, in Aurora, son of the late John W. and Ida May Hebb White. He was the last surviving member of his family. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Aurora. He was associated for many years with the Flint Medical and Surgical Supply Co. until his retirement. He is survived by a son, Douglas E. White, of Anchorage, Alaska. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Clara and Lunda; and five brothers, Jerry, Phillip, Richard, Rufus and Shirley. Graveside service will be at Aurora Cemetery at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, with the Rev. Berlin J. Wilhelm officiating. Burial will follow. Arthur H. George E. Hall
George E. Hall, 87, of 511 Fulton St., Fairmont, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born Sept. 20, 1913, in Adaline, son of the late Everett L. and Allie Bernice Calvert Hall. He was a member of the Willow Tree Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, the AF&AM Masonic Lodge No. 31 of Mannington, the Orient Chapter No. 9 RAM of Fairmont, the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry S.T. USA and the Eastern Star in Mannington. He retired in 1970 from the B&O Railroad after more than 43 years of service. He is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Louise Eagle, of White Hall, Fairmont; a brother, Wayne L. Hall, of Fairmont; a sister, Anna B. Morrow, of Fairmont; a grandson, Robert E. Eagle; a granddaughter, Cindy Lou Petty; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Marie Moore Hall, on July 20, 1982; and two brothers, Harland and Dennis Dean Hall. Verne Malcolm Bailey
Verne Malcom Bailey, 43, of Morgantown, formerly of Davistown, Greene County, Pa., died Friday, April 20, 2001, at home. He was born June 19, 1957, in Philadelphia, son of the late Alva Stephens and Theda Litman Bailey. He lived in Morgantown for the past 20 years, and was a graduate student at West Virginia University. He was employed by the Monongalia County Board of Education as a substitute teacher and was a student of the martial arts at the Tao Shiu Kuan Dojo. He is survived by his wife, Lou Ann Graham Bailey, whom he married June 13, 1981; two sons, Ian Bailey, and Joshua Bailey, both at home; a brother, Edgar A. Bailey, of Jefferson City, Mo.; and a sister, Devonna "Debbie" Boone, of Mount Morris, Pa. Robin J. Neely
Robin J. Neely, 29, of Philippi, formerly of West Union, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Fredericksburg, Va. She was born Dec. 16, 1971, in Clarksburg, daughter of Crandall Neely, of Philippi, and Joette Thorn, of Waco, Texas. She had attended Doddridge County High School in West Union, Barbour High School in Philippi, Morgantown High School, and Lord Fairfax College in Middletown, Va. She had been employed by Capital One and FEMA while in Stafford, Va., and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW in Wardensville. She is also survived by a daughter, Sierra Neely; a son, Ashton Sullivan, both of Philippi; a longtime companion, Darrell Sullivan, of Stafford, Va.; two sisters, Annie Senkbeil, of Wheeling, and Tara Neely, of Fredericksburg, Va.; a stepsister, Shiela Stiles, of Morgantown; and her stepmother, Dana Neely, of Philippi. June A. Haddix
June A. Haddix, 77, of Levels community, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at Marion Health Care Hospital, where she spent the last 14 months. She was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Swanton, Md., daughter of the late Sylvester and Rachel Phillips Martin. She was a dedicated Christian and Methodist. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, formerly known as EUB Church, for more than 40 years. She then was a member of Levels United Methodist Church, and most recently a member of the Church of the Brethren at Pleasant Hills. She held many offices with United Methodist churches. She was a member of United Methodist Women, through which she traveled extensively throughout West Virginia, and served for six years as a Conference Trustee. She was a c ertified lay speaker and was a member of the Auxiliary of the Gideon's International. She attended many church camps, where she often served as a counselor. She was also a homemaker. In her younger years, she had worked for Tri-State Cleaners, and Owens- Illinois in the packing department. She enjoyed sewing and often made her own clothes. She loved working outdoors, gardening and tending her flowers. She is survived by her husband of 49 years and eight months, Lloyd E. Haddix; a daughter and spouse, Dolores and John Watke, of Saylorsburg, Pa.; two brothers and spouse, Sylvester C. and Catherine Martin, of Reading, Pa., and Russell Martin, of Texas; a sister and spouse, Nettie and Andrew Shaffer, of Okeechobee, Fla.; and a grandson, Michael Arcuri, of South Carolina. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Machelle Arcuri. Walter A. Hassenpflug Sr.
Walter Austin Hassenpflug Sr., 83, of Grafton Road, Morgantown, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at MonPointe Continuing Care Center. He was born Sept. 19, 1917, in Lilly, Cambria County, Pa., son of the late Johan George and Nora Anna Long Hassenpflug. He was Apostolic. He was a resident of Morgantown since 1937. He was a former coal miner with the Kelly Creek Collieries and was later self-employed as a barber. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret L. Hunt Hassenpflug; a son, Walter A. Hassenpflug Jr., of Morgantown; and a grandson and spouse, Derek Galen and Elizabeth Hassenpflug, of Cincinnati. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Marlene Hassenpflug; a brother, James Clemens Hassenpflug; two sisters, Berdinia Mildred Moore, and Hazel May Speicher; and a half-sister, Janetta Catherine George. Private services were held Monday, with the Rev. Bernard Gillespie officiating. Hastings Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Musean Paladino
Musean R. Paladino, 87, of Wakefield Road, Fairmont, and formerly Clarksburg, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg. She was born Aug. 21, 1913, in Buckhannon, daughter of the late Sherman A. and Dessie Rohr White. She was a retired supervisor from C&P Telephone Co. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and St. Peter the Fisherman Roman Catholic Church in Fairmont. She is survived by a brother and spouse, Paul and Mildred White, of Buckhannon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam A. Paladino, in 1985. There will no funeral home visitation or service. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Joyce A. Clipp
Joyce Ann Stillwagon Clipp, 67, of Smyrna, Tenn., formerly of Fairmont, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the Baptist Hospital. She was born Jan. 22, 1934, in Fairmont, daughter of the late Robert and Eileen Altop Stillwagon. She was a homemaker and a member of the United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Donald Lee Clipp, of Columbus, Ga.; three daughters, Rhonda Kennedy, of Columbus, Sharon Cox, of Phoenix City, Ala., and Lorraine Clipp, of Lavergne, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Wes Cox, Sean Kennedy, Jonathan Malave, Ryan Kennedy, Bobby Malave, Crystal Cox and Mandy Cox; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob Cox, Dillion Cox and Diamond Malave. Lucille L. Davis
Lucille L. Baker Davis, 67, of Grafton, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at home. She was born in Fairmont, daughter of the late Orgeon Nelson and Nancy Reeves Baker. She was a homemaker. She retired in 1998 from Rosewood Nursing Home in Grafton, where she had worked as a cook for 19 years. She was a member of Viola Union Mission Church. She enjoyed cooking, reading, growing flowers and going to church. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Arthur Eugene Davis, whom she married July 18, 1954; a son and spouse, Randal Ken and Sue Davis, of Grafton; a daughter and spouse, Sheryl A. and Mark R. Steele, of Morgantown; two brothers, Dallas Baker and Nelson Baker, both of Fairmont; two sisters, Phyllis Baker Wilson, of Fairmont, and Bernice Baker Wyer, of Akron, Ohio; and a grandson, Eric Randall Steele, of Morgantown. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Baker Kittle and Maxine Baker Boyce. Friends may call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, Fairmont, from 1-9 p.m. Sunday, and from 10 am Monday, April 30, until the 11 a.m. service, with Pastor Scott Krepps officiating. Avis Allen Lowther
Avis Allen McCray Lowther, 89, of Pamona, N.Y., and formerly of Webster Springs, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Nyack Hospital in Nyack, N.Y., after a long illness. She was born Dec. 7, 1911, in Webster Springs, daughter of the late Wesley T. and Mattie M. McCray. She was retired from Letchworth Village, where she was a mental hygiene therapy aide. She was Protestant. She lived in Arthurdale and Webster County and she was a member of CSEA and the AARP. She is survived by five daughters, Marge Gillespie, of Mountainville, N.Y., Almonta Markwood, of Clinton, Ohio, Mary Weaver and Jane Buck, both of Ellijay, Ga., and Betty Capps, of Wheaton, Md.; four sons, Philip Lowther, of Wadsworth, Ohio, Obrey Lowther, of Columbia Station, Ohio, Leslie Lowther, of West Haverstraw, N.Y., and Ralph Lowther, of Brandenburg, Ky.; 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harley Lowther; two sons, Richard and Henry Lowther; and two grandchildren. Friends may call at Dodd and Reed Funeral Home, 155 McGraw St., Webster Springs, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Friday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, with the Rev. Sam Nichols officiating. Hazel Marie Brummage
Hazel Marie Michael Brummage, 98, of Mannington, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Marion Health Care Hospital in Fairmont. She was born April 1, 1903, in Mannington, daughter of the late Harry and Eva Blanche Beatty Michael. She was the oldest living member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Mannington, where she served as a pianist and organist. She had worked for the Bill Rice Ranch for the deaf in Murfreesboro, Tenn. She is survived by a son, Walter Robert Brummage, of Kirkland Lake, Canada; three grandchildren, Robert Brummage, of Ice's Run, Anita Harker, of Robertsville, Ohio, and Carolyn Hayes, of Canton, Ohio; 12 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Ray Brummage, on Sept. 16, 1994, whom she married on May 20, 1920; a grandchild, Donald Brummage; three brothers, Edward, Kenneth and Charles Wayne Michael; and a sister, Gail Irene Hawkins. Friends may call at Masters Funeral Home, Mannington, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday. Service will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29, with the Rev. Kerry Nastor officiating. Burial will follow at Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Gertrude L. Shaffer
Gertrude L. Hostetler Shaffer, 94, formerly of Van Voorhis Road, Morgantown, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Eliza Jennings Home, in Cleveland. She was born Dec. 1, 1906, on Baker's Ridge, Morgantown, daughter of the late Willey A. and Ida M. Walker Hostetler. She was a member of Drummond Chapel United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women's Club. She was a graduate of Morgantown High School. She was a postmaster at Van Voorhis for 21 years and retired in 1972 as a statistical analyst at WVU from the Department of Animal Husbandry. She was a member of the Ladies Grand Army of the Republic Hoffman Chapter 16 and the AARP Chapter 2093. She was a former member of the Monongalia County Historical Society. She is survived by a son and spouse, Loran Ray and Velma McMillen Shaffer, of Manning, S.C.; two daughters and spouses, Delores and Clifford McKenzie, of Hendersonville, N.C., and Carla and Dave McManus, of Cleveland; two grandsons, Michael R. Shaffer, of Raleigh, N.C., and Kenneth L. McKenzie, of Charlotte, N.C.; four granddaughters and two spouses, Suzanne Shaffer, of Fort Mitchell, Ky., Sally and Todd Dempsey, of Centerville, Va., Amy and Kevin Weiss, of San Jose, Calif., and Mary Ellen Lightner, of Cleveland; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Loran Ray Shaffer; a son, Kent Dwayne Shaffer; and a daughter, Cynthia Brenda. Elsie J. Haist
Elsie J. Haist, 82, of East Brockway Avenue, and formerly of Marlow Heights, Md., died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at The Madison nursing facility. She was born July 30, 1918, on her family's farm at Dedham, Maine, daughter of the late Jalmar and Carolina "Lena" Makitalo Gustafson Juutilainen. She had lived in Morgantown since 1992, after a 42-year career with the federal government. She began working as a clerk/stenographer with the federal government in 1944 and retired in May 1986 as a secretary/stenographer with the Federal Aviation Administration. She had worked at her FAA job for 21 years. Her hobbies included gardening and landscape oil painting. She also played the accordion, and performed at several Finn Hall dances during her youth in Bangor, Maine. From the mid-1950s through the ea rly 1960s, she and her daughter summered in Maine at the family farm, growing strawberries, raspberries and blueberries for sale to tourists and at local vegetable stands. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Raymond F. Haist; a daughter, and spouse Linda R. and Steven Malarkey, of Morgantown; and a sister, Elna M. Gustafson Shearer, of West Palm Beach, Fla. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Sadie Gustafson Lano. There will be no visitation or service. The body will be cremated. Hastings Funeral Home, Morgantown, is in charge of arrangements.
