Mary V. Moats
Mary V. Moats, 45, of Rowlesburg, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at home. She was born June 27, 1955, in Keyser, a daughter of Carrie K. Junkins Watkins, of St. George, and the late James Elsworth Watkins. She is survived by her husband, Richard W. Moats, of Rowlesburg; a son, George Moats Jr., of Rowlesburg; a brother, Thomas Watkins, of Rowlesburg; and a granddaughter, Jasmine Moats. John P. Kennedy
John P. Kennedy, 80, of Fairmont, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Wishing Well Manor, Fairmont. He was born April 5, 1921, in Fairmont, son of the late James Edward and Lena Bartlett Kennedy. He was a member of the St. Peter The Fisherman Catholic Church. He was the general manager of Alling & Cory Inc., retiring in 1985. He served three and a half years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the 615th Fighter Control Group and the 1st Interceptor Command. He was a graduate of St. Paul's High School in St. Petersburg, Fla., and St. Petersburg Junior College. He was an honorary life member and Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus, Marian Council 942 in Fairmont, a member of the Fairmont Rotary Club and was also a member of the "Old Guard" in Rotary. He was a member of the BPOE 294 Elks Lodge in Fairmont since 1947, the Fairmont Field Club and was a two-term board member for the local American Red Cross. He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances "Cass" Swink Kennedy, of Fairmont; a brother, Bartlett Kennedy, of Lufkin, Texas; and a sister, Barbara McKnight, of St. Petersburg. He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Edward Kennedy Jr.; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Wedding. Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Charles Wesley Cross
Charles Wesley Cross, 56, of Route 9, in Fairmont, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at home. He was born March 23, 1945, in Fairmont, son of the late Alberta Cross Martin. He was a supervisor for Allegheny Power at the Rivesville Power Station. He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran, a member of the American Legion and a 1964 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School. He was a member of Pitcher United Methodist Church and an avid hunter. He is survived by his wife, Becky Langford Cross; two daughters and spouses, Tammy and John Wayne King, of Fairmont, and Crystal and John Loudin, of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Charles Allen, Skyler Loudin, Cordell, Wesley and Becca King; and a sister and spouse, Cindy and Jerry Pourbaix. Frieda Irene Shaffer
Frieda Irene Shaffer, 89, of Irish Ridge, died Monday, May 3, 2001, at Country Living, Grafton. She was born May 22, 1911, on Irish Ridge, Preston County, daughter of the late Lydia Amise Miller and Edmund Clay Shaffer. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and keeping scrapbooks. She was a lifelong attendee of Birds Creek United Methodist Church. She is survived by three nieces, Elaine P. Sapp, who served as her caretaker on Irish Ridge, Loris Kasecamp, of Baltimore, and Mary Grimes, of Newburg; and a nephew, William Edwards, of Norfolk, Va. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Warren Shaffer, Roland Shaffer and Ray Shaffer; and five sisters, Mary Samantha "Molly" Sapp, Lucy Shaffer, Ethel Shaffer Edwards, Clara Shaffer Perrill and Grace Shaffer. Arlene C. McDonald
Arlene Cooper McDonald, 84, of Woodland Drive, Bridgeport, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at The Heritage, Bridgeport, following a long illness. She was born Oct. 27, 1916, in Junior, Barbour County, daughter of the late Charles and Alice Dumire Cooper. She was a 1935 graduate of Elkins High School. She was a former employee of C&P Telephone Co., Clarksburg. She was a member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church, the Bridgeport Women's Club and Order of Eastern Star Morgantown Chapter. She is survived by her husband, Harry McDonald, of Bridgeport; a daughter, Alexis McDonald, of Pinewood Avenue, Bridgeport and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Fred "Hope" Caplinger and Kate Ware, both of Elkins. Paul 'Fritz' Olschesky
Paul "Fritz" Olschesky, 95, of Carmichaels, Pa., died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Celli Personal Care Home. He was born May 3, 1905, in Edenborn, Pa., son of the late William and Louise Wolff Olschesky. He was retired from the Crucible Fuel Co. mine and resided in Carmichaels for most of his life. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carmichaels and UMWA Local 1980. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and served in the Pacific theater. He is survived by a brother, Harry Olschesky, of Barnesboro, Pa.; and two sisters, Frieda Yarnish, of Carmichaels, and Mildred Klotz, of Coca, Fla. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Midlick Olschesky, on Dec. 11, 1990, whom he married Sept. 19, 1956; a brother, Fred Olschesky; and a sister, Anna Yarnish. Friends will be received at Yoskovich Funeral Home, 300 S. Vine St., in Carmichaels, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 5. Willie Charles Davis
Willie Charles Davis, 87, of Route 1, South Farmington, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born May 22, 1913, in Farmington, son of the late John Brooks Davis Sr. and Minnie Marvel Downs Davis. He had attended the South Farmington Methodist Church. He was a member of the UMWA and the Marion County ASTS. He had been a supervisor for the Fairmont division of the state Department of Highways. He was retired from the Barrackville No. 7 coal mine for Bethlehem Steel Corp. He is survived by a son and spouse, Donnel and Norma Davis, of Farmington; a sister, Carrie Lee Brilla, of Burton, Ohio; two grandchildren, Susan Coburn, of Rock Hill, S.C., and Deanna Hayes, of Mannington; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was also preceded in death by his wife of more than 64 years, Teresa Maxine Davis, on April 16, 1999; two brothers, James and John Jr. Davis; two sisters, Helen Gibbons and Minnie Davis; and a grandson, Gregary Davis. Hoffa B. Sullivan
Hoffa B. Sullivan, 82, of Bobtown, Pa., died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Beverly Health Care Center in Waynesburg, Pa. He was born Aug. 6, 1918, in Burnesville, son of the late James and Florence Clemens Sullivan. He was formerly employed at Houze Glass in Point Marion, Pa., and also worked as a coal miner in several small area mines. He was a member of the Polish Club in Bobtown. He is survived by two sisters, Helen Moody, and Elizabeth Rohulich, both of Bobtown. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Marguerite Sullivan. Richard R. George 'Bud' Hartsell
George W. "Bud" Hartsell, 77, of Reedsville, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at home. He was born June 21, 1923, son of the late French and Pearl E. Watson Hartsell. He served in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1987 from the West Virginia Division of Highways. He is survived by his wife, Alice B. Hartsell; two sons, George E. Hartsell, of Georgia, and David P. Hartsell, of Reedsville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a son William C. Hartsell, in 1986. Lilly 'Emmajean' Lang
Lilly "Emmajean" Lang, 63, of Anaheim, Calif., died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, of Lou Gehrig's disease. She was born in Morgantown, daughter of the late Frank and Pauline Bigalow Burns. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Arthur; a son, Victor, of Fullerton; two daughters, Della Johnson, of Irvine, Calif., and Patty Barcenas, also of Irvine; four brothers, Johnny, Jimmy and David Burns, all of Michigan, and George Burns, of El Monte, Calif.; and a sister, Betty Giannotti, of Santa Ana, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and Walter Burns, both of California. A memorial service was held Tuesday at St. Justin's Martyr Catholic Church in Anaheim.

Alma Wolfe Robinson
Graveside service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5 [2001], for Alma Wolfe Robinson, 94, of Tunnelton, who died Dec. 15, 2000, in Zephyhills, Fla. She was born Feb. 27, 1906, in Tunnelton. She and her husband, Harry V. Robinson, were original homesteaders in Arthurdale. She is survived by a son, William Harry Robinson, of Seffner, Fla.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Arthurdale Cemetery, with her grandson, the Rev. David Robinson officiating.

Grace B. Price Current
Grace Bernice Price Current, 90, of 1107 Fleming Ave., Fairmont, formerly of Gladesville, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born Nov. 12, 1910, in Pruntytown, daughter of the late Elmus G. Price and Bernice Roby Price. She was a retired teacher from the Marion Board of Education with 31 years of service. She last taught at Whitehall Elementary School. She was a member of the Fleming Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she was a church elder, Sunday school teacher and member of the choir. She was a 1943 Fairmont State College graduate. She was a member of the Fairmont Women's Club, the American Association of University Women, the CEOS Club and the local garden club. She was a volunteer at Fairmont General Hospital. Sh e enjoyed reading, gardening, volunteering at the Soup Opera food pantry and at the local blood bank. She is survived by a brother, Ralph Price, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Juanita Price; a brother-in-law, Joseph Taylor; close friends, Dave and Janet Chittum, of Fairmont; and nine nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John E. Current, whom she married in 1936; a brother, John Price; and a sister, Iris Taylor. Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, R.C. WVU professor of law Maxey dies of tumor
Ann Maxey Babb, a professor at West Virginia University's College of Law, died on May 2, 2001, from a brain tumor. She was the daughter of retired Col. Peter Maxey, of Ethel, Miss., and Mary McKenzie Hester, of Jackson, Miss. She joined the faculty at the college in August 1991 and taught courses in business organizations, securities regulation and contracts. She will be remembered for her passionate pursuit of excellence, her keen intelligence and perception, her pioneering spirit and her wonder of adventure. She received her undergraduate and law degrees from Tulane University in 1963 and 1978. Her academic achievements include Order of the Coif and Law Review editor. She was a partner in the Tucson office of O'Connor, Cavanagh, Anderson, Westover, Killingsworth & Beshears, and predecessor firms, for 10 years, specializing in capital formation and financing transactions. Previously she practiced law in San Francisco and was a law clerk at the U.S Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. While at WVU she served on the Faculty Senate and its Executive Committee and was a member of the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Alliance for Women's Studies and other faculty committees. At the time of her death she was director and secretary of the West Virginia Law Institute and co-reporter for the proposed new business and nonprofit corporation acts drafted for the Legislature. Maxey was also an officer of the American Bar Association's Committee on Counsel Responsibility. She had a lifelong interest in hiking and mountaineering and was a member of the Kenilworth Mountaineering Club's 1991 expedition to the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. The expedition made ascents of five previously unclimbed peaks. In the mid-1980's she revisited her childhood home in China and trekked for several months in Tibet, India and Pakistan. Maxey was also active in theater and other arts organizations. She was a members of St. Thomas a Becket Episcopal Church, Morgantown. She is survived by her husband, Frank Babb, of Morgantown; four children and spouses, Derry Beach and David Adams, of Colorado Springs, Colo., George Bradford and Melissa Beach, of Yuma, Ariz., Ned and Grazyna Babb and George Babb, all of Chicago; five grandchildren and spouses, John and Ann Frances Adams, Brandon and Lauren Beach and Lukasz Babb; and sisters Rosemary Savage, of Madison, Miss., and Melinda Dearman, of Brandon, Miss. Service will be at St. Thomas a Becket Episcopal Church, Morgantown, at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. Delbert 'Boots' Anderson
Delbert Harold "Boots" Anderson, 75, of Metz, Earnshaw community, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at home. He was born July 6, 1925, in Earnshaw, son of the late John Anderson and Fanny Fetty Anderson. He was a farmer, and Catholic. He is survived by a brother, Orval Anderson, of Steubenville, Ohio; and three sisters, Fostean Flanagan, of Weirton, Johanna Dawson, of Baltimore, and Blanche Wright, of Steubenville. Lelia S. Tucker, 89, of Grafton, Currey Ridge community, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg. She was born Feb. 6, 1912, in Taylor County, daughter of the late Martin and Viola Knight Tucker. She was Protestant. She is survived by a son, Jack L. Tucker, of Grafton; two stepdaughters, Martha Johnson, of Shinnston, and Arah Belle Fulton, of Baltimore; a granddaughter, Cheryl Kelley, of Grafton; a great-grandson, Brian Kines, of Indianapolis; a sister, Beulah Mahaffey, of Grafton; and a brother-in-law, Harry Newcome, of Mount View community, Taylor County. Wayne E. Noss
Wayne E. Noss, 60, of Kingwood, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 25, 1940, in Wellersburg, Pa., son of the late Earl R. and Nellie Guthrie Noss Sr. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He worked with Bethlehem Steel, in Baltimore, and retired after 30 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carrie June Bucklew Noss, of Kingwood; a son and spouse, Howard and Elizabeth Noss, of the U.S. Marine Corps, South Carolina; two daughters, Brenda Noss, of Kingwood, and Tammy Noss, of Macomber; three brothers and spouses, Earl Richard Noss Jr., of Baltimore; Robert and Linda Noss, of Baltimore, and John and Kay Noss, of Baltimore; two sisters and spouses, Naomi and Lloyd Dwight "Bud" Ringer, of Baltimore, and Shirley and Wayne Evans, of Hazelton; and eight grand children, Richard Brandau, Vanessa Noss, Ryan Rosier, Alexander Noss, Christina Noss, Cassandra Noss, Samantha Noss and Junior Noss. Robert E. Swinehart
Robert E. Swinehart, 61, of Bruceton Mills, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at home. He was born April 3, 1940, in New London, Ohio, son of Kathleen Hill Anderson, of Cleveland, and the late Norman C. Swinehart Sr. He is also survived by his wife, Esther Sines Swinehart, of Bruceton Mills; a daughter, Michelle Swinehart, of Bruceton Mills; a brother, Norman C. Roberta Gail Lewis
Roberta Gail Lewis, 90, of Newburg, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md. She was born Aug. 18, 1910, in Evansville, daughter of the late James R. and Ellen Riggins Lewis. She obtained a business degree from Fairmont Business College before she worked as an auditor for the Albright National Bank in Kingwood for 35 years. She was a member of the former Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newburg. She is survived by a nephew, David Lewis, of New Hope, Pa.; and two nieces, Ruth Holshey, of South Riding, Va., and Barbara Huff, of Ridgeley. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lee and Virginia Chidester; and a brother, Glenn Lewis. Friends may call at James G. Roma Cabell Miller
Roma Williams Cabell Miller, formerly of Foster, Boone County, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, in Chester, after a long illness. She was born Nov. 24, 1911, daughter of Willie Ulysses and Clara Anne Williams. In 1951, after her first husband died, she moved to Morgantown. While there, she enrolled in business college and graduated with the highest grades in her class. She is a devout member of the Church of Christ. She is survived by three daughters and spouses, Geraldine and George Abshire, of Cross Lanes, Chloe Anne and David Jester, of Chester, and Audra and John Leonian, of Morgantown; a son and spouse, Lawrence Cabell and Joan Hargreaves, of Charlottesville, Va.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Christine Atkins; and a stepdaughter-in-law, Velda Miller. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence Cabell, in 1951, whom she married on Sept. 3, 1928; her second husband, Omer Miller Sr., in 1984, whom she married in 1958; a son in infancy, Clarence Cabell Jr.; a stepson, Omer Miller Jr.; and a stepson-in-law, Jess Atkins. John Joseph Lawless
John Joseph Lawless, 92, formerly of Morgantown, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in Tampa, Fla. He was born in St. Paul, Minn. He earned his Ph.D. in anatomy in 1934 from the University of Minnesota and his M.D. from Rush Medical College in 1939. In 1944, he moved to Morgantown, where he was a physician and director of Student Health at WVU. He served in this post for 28 years, retiring in 1971. He was a member of the Medical Center Building Committee from 1950-1960, president of the West Virginia Tuberculosis Association from 1962-1964 and president of the Monongalia County Medical Society in 1960. After his retirement, he moved to Gainesville, Fla., where he taught anatomy to University of Florida medical students for 12 years as a volunteer. He was a member of the Rotary Club, giving more than 50 years of service. In 2000, he was inducted into the WVU Student Services Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Louise G. Lawless; three daughters, Carolyn Mahan, of Tampa, JoAn Vaughan, of Columbia, Mo., and Laura Berns, of Gainesville; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Carrie S. Fast
Carrie S. Fast, 91, of Harrodsburg, Ky., and formerly of Grafton, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at the Hospice of the Bluegrass at St. Joseph in Lexington, Ky., after a brief illness. She was born Sept 19, 1909, in the Oak Grove community, Taylor County, daughter of the late Clarence Sinsel and Hannah Call Sinsel. She was a graduate of Grafton High School. She earned a two-year degree from Alderson-Broaddus College, where she was a member of the Willis Society. She earned a four-year degree from Fairmont State College and did graduate work at West Virginia University. She retired from the Taylor County Board of Education in 1975 where she was a reading specialist at Anna Jarvis Elementary School. After retiring from teaching, she joined the Grafton City Hospital Auxiliary, where she served for 17 years. She was n amed outstanding volunteer by the state group in 1983. She was president for three years and managed the Grafton City Hospital gift shop. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution where she wasa regent to the Elizabeth Cummins Jackson Chap ter. She was a member of Harrodsburg Baptist Church in Harrodsburg, Ky. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Frances and David Thompson, of Harrodsburg, Ky.; a son and spouse, Charles Sinsel and Joyce Fast, of Akron, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Carol Brown, of Newman, Ga., Robin Parish, of Hickory, N.C., Wendy Morris, of Flowermount, Texas, Kevin Thompson, of Nashville, Lisa Owens, of Danville, Ill., and Charles S. Fast, John Fast and Carrie Fast, all of Akron; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Otto M. Sinsel, Chester Sinsel, Albert Sinsel and Clarence Sinsel; and four sisters, Gertrude Menear, Edith Sinsel, Ada Sinsel and Gladys Ford. Friends may call at Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton from noon Sunday, May 6, until the 2 p.m. service, with the Rev. Kyle Brown officiating. Burial will be in Woodsdale Memorial Park Cemetery.
