Charles Densel Shaffer
Charles Densel "Dutch" Shaffer, 89, of Kingwood, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born Sept. 10, 1911, in Irona, son of the late Clarence Edmund and Lattie Lucy Hawley Shaffer. He was a member of Kanes Creek United Methodist Church. During World War II, he worked at Ballard Aircraft. He retired from the state Department of Highways with 42 years service. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pearl Johnson Shaffer; a son and spouse, Charles E. and Judith Shaffer, of Kingwood; a grandson and spouse, Michael and Shelley Shaffer, of Kingwood; a granddaughter, Tammy Shaffer, of Morgantown; and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Church and Neva Menear. Gerald Elwood Chidester
Gerald Elwood Chidester, 74, of Dug Hill Road, Morgantown, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born June 18, 1926, at Cherry Grove, Preston County, son of the late Wesley Ray and Cora Hazel Chidester. He was a graduate of Masontown High School and attended West Virginia University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a deputy assessor for Monongalia County. He had worked for Olin Matheson Co. and retired from the U.S. Department of Energy. He was a former member of the Izaak Walton League, The Gideons International and Monongalia County Democratic Committee. He was a 42-year member of Sabraton Baptist Church. An avid fan of WVU sports, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. His greater love was as a member of The Crusaders Quartet, a family gospel singing group. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Tiny Henryetta Poole Chidester; three sons and spouses, David E. Chidester, of Morgantown, Douglas K. and Rebecca Chidester, of Morgantown, and Dean A. and Teri Chidester, of Huntington; two daughters and spouse, Diana and Bill Burke of Munford, Tenn., and Donna Merrifield, of Fairmont; 13 grandchildren, Wesley, Jeffrey and Kristen Burke, Andrew, Melissa and Ryan Chidester, Erin, Cori and Lucas Chidester, Jason and Amanda Chidester, and Steven and Michael Merrifie ld; a son-in-law, Scott Merrifield; a sister-in-law, Mildred Chidester, of Delaware; and a sister, Linda Davis, of Hutto, Texas. Ray Junior Shahan
Ray Junior Shahan, 63, of Fellowsville, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born June 12, 1937, in Fellowsville, son of the late Dorsey Junior and Ruby Inez Simpson Shahan. He retired in 1994 with 29 years of service as a miner operator for Island Creek Coal, in Bayard, and Consol Coal Co. He was a member of the Fellowsville Pentecostal Church in Fellowsville, UMW Local 1289 and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Shirley Wiles Shahan; three sons and spouse, Kenneth Shahan, of Thorton, David Shahan, of Tunnelton, and Thomas and Donna Shahan, of Tunnelton; a stepdaughter and spouse, Angela and Steven Celey, of Morgantown; three stepsons and spouses, Richard Chappell and fiancee, Heather Huffman, of Morgantown, Steven and Judy Chappell, of Tunnelton, and Martin and Cindy Chappell, of Newburg; two sisters and spouses, Esther and Alfred Wolfe, of Fellowsville, and Deloras and J erry Stone, of Fellowsville; 17 grandchildren, Coty Shahan, Chaelyn Shahan, Michael Shahan, Thomas Junior "T.J." Bettie Arlena Bonomi
Bettie Arlena Bonomi, 64, Barrett Street, Grafton, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at home as a result of a house fire. She was the daughter of the late Walter Johnson Worley and Lena Orpha Moats Alexander. She was a homemaker and a caregiver. She is survived by a sister, Emily Geldbaugh, of Port Richey, Fla.; three nephews, Richard Geldbaugh, of Fairmont, James Geldbaugh, of Land o' Lakes, Fla., and Timothy Geldbaugh, of Port Richey; a niece, Tammy Geldbaugh, of Laurel, Md.; two aunts, Bertha Orr, of Fairmont, and Frankie Strickland, of Fairbluff, N.C.; two great-nieces; and a great-nephew. A memorial service will be at St. John's United Methodist Church, 116 St. John St., Grafton, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, with the Rev. H. Edgar Suite officiating. Elsie Oleta Saucer
Elsie Oleta Saucer, 90, of Grafton, died May 17, 2001, at a local nursing home following an extended illness. She was born March 1, 1911, in Upshur County, daughter of the late Merkle Love and Mary Kinsey Love. She was a homemaker and Baptist. She is survived by a son and spouse, Carl and Lou Saucer, of Grafton; three stepchildren, Polly Shumaker, of Louisville, Ky., and Kenneth L. Biddle and Joe Biddle, both of Grafton; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two nephews, William K. Poling, of Washington, D.C., and James Henry Poling of Huntington. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Dorsey Carl Saucer, in 1983, and a sister, Georgie Poling. Bertie Leon Brookover
Bertie Leon Brookover, of Tavares, Fla., formerly of Stewart, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in Eustis, Fla. He was born July 8, 1913, in Fairview, son of the late Learney French and Mary Alice Jones Brookover. He was a 1936 graduate of the agricultural sciences program at West Virginia University. He was a World War II veteran of the 101st Airborne Division, and achieved the rank of captain. He served 17 years with the reserves as a major. He owned a dairy farm at the site where Federal Hocking High School now stands. He also built, owned and operated Skyline Speedway and was a timber contractor. He was a member of Blackburn Hill Church of Christ, a life member of Disabled American Veterans Post 37 of Athens, Ohio, and a past member of Stewart Grange, Rome Canaan School Board and the Farm Bureau. He is survived by his wife, Alice O. Brookover; a sister, Sylvia Ammons; four daughters and spouses, Angy Cessna, of Winchester, Va., Margaret Bennett, Susan and Robert Sebring, all of Athens, Ohio, and Nancy and Dave Lunsford, of Key Colony, Fla.; two stepchildren, John and Carl Campbell, of Florida; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Irene Neely; a son, Bertie L. Jr.; a grandson, Jeffrey Blaine Cessna; great-granddaughter, Sabrina; a brother, Jacob Brookover; and sisters, Gail Hamilton, Stella Tennant and Chole Brookover. Etta Jane Shears
Etta Jane Nicholson Shears, 73, of Nicholson Loop Road, Morgantown, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at home. She was born Nov. 21, 1927, in Monongalia County, daughter of the late Timothy and Anna McDonald Nicholson. She was a member of Beulah Free Methodist Church. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was formerly associated with the Head Start program. She is survived by three daughters and spouses, Connie and Ronnie Gilmore, Bonnie and Gary Blosser and Cindy and Kenny Hanlin, all of Nicholson Loop; a son and spouse, Marvin and Lillie Nicholson, of Nicholson Loop; 19 grandchildren, James and Sheila Broadwater, Tab and Lora Densmore, Mark and Kelly Brown, Derek and Jamie Gilmore, Alan and Angie Aronhalt, Shawn and Roberta Davis, Brandy Hanlin, Melissa Hanlin, John and Julie Nicholson, Misty Hanlin, Lonnie and Angie Hanlin; three step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Don Nicholson of Tennessee, and Ben Nicholson, of Summers School Road; five sisters, Lillie Jenkins, of Pentress, Melvina Cutlip, of Summers School Road, Anna Glenda Corob, of Summers School Road, and Pearl McMillen and Winnie Ruble, both of Tennessee. Mildred Jane Stewart Tennant Hoskins, 86, of Blacksville, died Friday, May 18, 2001, in Monongalia General Hospital. She was born Aug. 26, 1914, in Dear Lick Run, Monongalia County, daughter of the late James Richard and Cora B. Johnson Stewart. A lifelong resident of Monongalia County, she worked in local grocery stores, Bells Market and Scotts Clover Farm. She was a member of Olive United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son and spouse, Larry O. and Elizabeth Ann Chiater Tennant, of Satellite Beach, Fla.; a daughter and spouse, Ruby and Raymond C. Brewer, of Blacksville; three brothers, Paul T. Stewart, of Charleston, Earl W. Stewart, of Martinsburg, and Carl Stewart of St. Augustine, Fla.; two sisters, Rose M. Huggins, of Uniontown, Pa., and Pauline Gaskill, of Portland, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Sue Stewart, of St. Augustine, and Phyllis N. Stewart, of Morgantown; five grandchildren and four spouses, Monica and Danny Moore, Kevin and Carla Brewer, Darryl and Tina Brewer, Marsha and Danny Lemley, and Rhonda Tennant; four great-grandsons; five great-granddaughters; and a great-great-grandson. Charles Madeira Sr.
Charles Frederick Madeira Sr., 99, of Globe Avenue, Morgantown, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Sundale Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since July 1999. He was born Feb. 8, 1902, in Morgantown, son of the late Haymond Griggs and Nora Koontz Madeira. He graduated from Morgantown High School and was formerly employed at DuPont Chemical Co. at the Morgantown Ordnance Works. He retired in 1988 after 30 years of service from the Monongalia County Clerk's Office where he was a deputy clerk. He was a member of Morgantown Union Lodge 4 A.F. & A.M., where in 1962 he was Monarch of the Morgantown Dubor Grotto. In 1994, the lodge recognized him for 50 years as a Scottish Rite Mason. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Morgantown and w as a member of the Morgantown Literary Club and the Morgantown Senior Citizens. He is survived by a son and spouse, Charles Frederick Jr. and Elizabeth "Bettie" Gegyo Madeira, of Williamsport, Pa. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Alice Horvath Madeira, on Jan. 23, 1999; three brothers, Herman, Emil and Kenneth Madeira; and a sister, Frances Madeira Wilson. Mary Evelyn Terlosky
Mary Evelyn Terlosky, 82, of Fairmont, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born March 23, 1919, in Fairmont, daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Satterfield Davis. She graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1937. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Fairmont. She was a homemaker. She is survived by two daughters and spouse, Linda and Chuck Nease, of Georgetown, S.C., and Judith Skormisley, of Fairmont; two granddaughters, Stacey Nease-Hibbs, of Barrackville, and Lisa Toland, of Bellview; and three great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Michael F. Terlosky; a son, Larry Swisher; a daughter, Olive Nicodemus; and a grandson, Brad Christy. A memorial service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 20, with the Rev. David Rockwood officiating. The body will be cremated and buried at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown at a later date. Dana Paul Stone, 61, of Bertha Hill Road, Maidsville, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at home. He was born Feb. 9, 1940, in Morgantown, son of the late Bruce and Della Cowger Tolka Stone. He was formerly employed by Consolidation Coal Co., Humphrey No. 7 Mine, and was a member of the UMWA. He is survived by a daughter, Kimberly D. Perrine, of Morgantown; a son and spouse, Todd A. and Brenda Stone, of Bobtown, Pa.; four brothers, Boyd Stone, of Indianapolis, Richard Tolka, of Wanda, John Stone, of Carmichaels, Pa., and Danny Stone, of West Virginia; a sister, Doris Stone, of Maidsville; and five grandchildren, Christopher Stone, Kaylyn Stone, Colin Perrine, Wesley Perrine and Makayla Perrine. Carl Shrout Sr.
Carl Shrout Sr., 85, of Ashland, Ky., and formerly of Kingwood, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was born Dec. 20, 1915, in Kingwood, son of the late Charles and Florence Burch Shrout. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War. He retired at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. After retiring, he was manager of the Kingwood Recreation Center. He is survived by a son, Carl Shrout Jr., of Ashland; a daughter, Carla Snakenberg, of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, Donald Lee Shrout, of Falcon, Mo.; two sisters, Ruby Morris, of Kingwood, and Helen Summers, of Reedsville; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Tuzy Shrout; a son; a daughter, Karen Zeppenfeldt; and seven brothers. Chester W. Burgess Jr.
Chester Walton Burgess Jr., 74, of Franklin, Va., died Sunday, May 20, 2001. He was born in Birmingham, Ala., son of the late Chester W. and Elsie Sims Burgess. He was a member of the Hunterdale United Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a retired salesman with Belknap Inc., where he worked for 38 years. He was a firm administrator with Burgess & Co. CPAs in Franklin, Va., for eight years. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mildred Pfeiffer Burgess; five sons and spouses, Chester W. III and Rebecca Burgess, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Robert Earl and Barbara Burgess, of Virginia Beach, Va., William Joseph and Ann Burgess, of Franklin, Dennis Dean and Emily Burgess, of Richmond, Va., and Brenton David and Elizabeth Burgess, of Franklin; two sisters, Patricia B. Gladys V. Summers, 87, of Bruceton Mills, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Morgan Manor Nursing Center, Morgantown. She was born June 17, 1913, in Cuzzart, daughter of the late Cyrus and Jane Miller Shaffer. She was a member of the Shady Grove Church of the Brethren. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Delma May and Donald Ritchey, of Ellenboro; a son, Chester Junior Summers, of Bruceton Mills; three grandchildren and spouses, Donald Ray Ritchey, of Brandonville, Rodney and Regina Ritchey, of Ellenboro, and Andrea and Michael Mahaney, of Ellenboro; and two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Julia Ritchey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Chester C. Billy Richard Main, 73, of Washington County Health Center, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Washington Hospital. He was born Nov. 12, 1927, in Core, son of the late Lindsay L. Main Sr. and Myrtie Statler Main. He was Protestant and worked for Kress Box Co. He is survived by five brothers, Lindsay L. Main Jr., of Montgomery Ala., Charles R., George M., James E. and Keanith P., all of Washington, Pa.; and five sisters, Mary M. Biggs, of Washington, Pa., Martha M. Kelley, of Waynesburg, Pa., Alice M. Zappi, of Claysville, Pa., Wilda J. Durbin, of Washington, Pa. and Wilma J. Miller, of Mount Morris, Pa. Violet Louise Pyles
Violet Louise Pyles, 70, of Newburg, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Preston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Masontown, daughter of the late Oral and Gladys Matthew Stone. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Masontown. She is survived by three sons and spouses, Keith and Carolyn Pyles, of Granville, David Pyles, of Rochester, Pa., and Randy Pyles and Brenda Gordon, of Newburg; four daughters and spouses, Rosalee and Ronald Stone, of Kingwood, Susanna and James Stenger, of Beaver Falls, Pa., Deloris and Michael Matheny, of Westover, and Michale Pyles and Harvey Burke, of Newburg; a sister, Sharon Teets, of Reedsville; a brother, Donald Plum, of Gladesville; five grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David Pyles; a stepmother, Dorothy Stone; and a stepfather, Rudolph Stone. Friends may call at Morgan Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, until the 2 p.m. service, with Elder Dewey Moore officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.

Norma Jean McKinney
Norma Jean McKinney, 70, of Morgantown, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born Jan. 21, 1931, in Morgantown, daughter of the late William R. and Sarah Ann Jones McKinney. She was Methodist and was a former employee of Cappellanti's Restaurant. She is survived by two sisters, Eleanor Fizer, of Morgantown, and Margaret "Peggy" Malott, of Fairmont. She was also preceded in death by a brother, David T. "Bud" McKinney, and an infant brother. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Lawnwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Junior Koon officiating. Dering's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Pratt Naylor
Evelyn Pratt Naylor, 94, of Updays Run Road, Fairview, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Wishing Well Health Center. She was born June 27, 1906, in Kingmont, daughter of the late Albert and Lillian Work Fortney. She retired as executive housekeeper at the Sheridan-Mayflower Hotel in Akron, Ohio. She attended Daybrook Methodist Church. She is survived by three children and spouses, Glenna and Billy Owens, of Fairview, Jack Pratt, of Fairview, and Lee and Ruth Ann Pratt, of Colombian, Ohio; a brother, Fred Fortney, of Fairview; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paris Pratt; a son, Peter Pratt; and two sisters, Eleanor Lowther and Thelma Schooley. There will be no visitation. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Shay Cemetery, Tunnelton, with Heath Owens officiating. Donations: charity of choice. Domico Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Grace S. Frisenda
Bessie Grace Sabo Frisenda, 77, of Hopemont Hospital, Terra Alta, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at WVU Hospital, Morgantown. She was born Jan. 2, 1924, in Farmington, daughter of the late Paul Sr. and Ethel Miles Sabo. She was Protestant and was a graduate of Farmington High School and a homemaker. She is survived by two sons and spouses, Richard and Pattsy Frisenda, of Shinnston, and Douglas and Sandy Frisenda, of Carmel, N.J.; two brothers, Earl Sabo, of Texas, and Jack Sabo, of Severn, Md.; and two grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Harry, George, Johnny and Paul Jr. Sabo; two sisters, Ella and Margaret; and a daughter, Judy Ann Frisenda. Friends may call at Dent Funeral Home, Farmington, from 6-8 p.m. Monday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, with Pastor Terry Woodside officiating. Burial will in IOOF Cemetery, Farmington.

Oma P. Everly
Oma P. Everly, 86, of Ocala, Fla., died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Timber Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ocala. She was born Oct. 28, 1914, in Albright, daughter of the late John Scott and Lyda Feathers Scott. She was Methodist and founded the Garrett Manufacturing Co. in Deer Park, Md., which she managed until her retirement. She is survived by her husband, John E. Everly; a daughter, Patricia A. Gamble, of Ocala, Fla.; a son, Louis E. Schoemer, of Oakland, Md.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Friends may call at Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, with the Rev. Dr. Stacy Groscup officiating. Burial will be in Mount Mariah Cemetery, Valley Point.

Glenn Omar Nedrow
Glenn Omar Nedrow, 75, of Route 1, Kingwood, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at home after a long illness. He was born March 14, 1926, in Albright, son of the late Walter and Ocie White Nedrow. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired from Consolidation Coal Co.'s Humphrey No. 7 mine where he worked as a coal miner. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He had been receiving services from Hospice Care Corp. He is survived by three sons, Rodney Nedrow, of Kingwood, Pete Myers, of Flemington and David Wolfe, of Strasburg, Ohio; a daughter, Debbie DeSantis, of Kingwood; a grandson, Mike Myers, of Kingwood; a brother, Frank Nedrow, of Arthurdale; a sister, Elda Hodges, of Tunnelton; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jean, and a brother, Carl Nedrow. Friends may call at Waldeck Funeral Home, Masontown, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, and at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church from 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, until the 2 p.m. service, with the Rev. Joe Lamm officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Herring, with military graveside rites.
