William 'Bill' Hughes Sr.
William "Bill" Hughes Sr., 75, of Osage, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at home. He was born Nov. 7, 1925, in Ronco, Pa., Fayette County, son of the late John and Edna Adams Hughes. He was a retired coal miner of 45 years with Consolidation Coal Co., Pursglove No. 15 mine in Pursglove. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Lou Rancjik Hughes; a son, William Hughes Jr., of Vienna; two daughters and a spouse, Betty Jean and Melvin Canfield, of Morgantown, and Kim Louise Hughes, of Osage; three grandchildren, Tiffany, Stephanie and Brittany Canfield; a brother and spouse, Earl and Jean Hughes, of Maidsville; and a sister, Jean Boken, of Morgantown. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Jack and Paul Hughes; and four sisters, Mabel Fulmer, Catharine Sweeney, Loretta West and Gail Propst. Friends may call at Fred L. Gerald Dale Eakin
Gerald Dale Eakin, 44, of Smithtown Road, Morgantown, died as a result of a hunting accident off the Boy Scout Road, Mononongalia County, on Friday, May 18, 2001. He was born Feb. 9, 1957, son of Geraldine Eakin and Neal Eakin. He was a graduate of Morgantown High School. He was self-employed as a carpenter and a member of the Independent Hunting Club. He is also survived by his wife of 17 years, Rita Boyce Eakin; two sons, Clayton Eakin and Matt Eakin; two sisters, Dorinda Kibler and Donella Eakin; and his grandmother, Mabel Graham. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at his home, 1460 Smithtown Road, Morgantown, with the Rev. Ed Noel officiating. Cremation services were provided by Hastings Funeral Home. Donations: the Clayton Boyce Eakin Trust Fund, Huntington National Bank, High Street location, Morgantown. The family of Gerald Dale Eakin would like to thank all the volunteers, fire departments, search and rescue teams, specially trained dogs and horses, the American Red Cross, and the State Police for the helicopter search, and especially Trooper Boyle and Officer T.R. Queen, who went out of their way with suggestions and help in trying to locate Eakin. They would also like to thank family, friends and co-workers who lent support and donated food during the search.

Carman Allawat Sr.
Carman Allawat Sr., 89, of 415 Plainwood Ave., Stonewood, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Heartland of Clarksburg. He was born Dec. 25, 1911, in Glen Falls, son of the late John Allawat and Mary Spadafore Allawat. He had been a volunteer fireman for the Stonewood Fire Department and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Stonewood. He is survived by his wife, Lena Mustachio Allawat, of Stonewood; two sons, Carman Allawat Jr., of Charleston, and Jackie Allawat, of Painsville, Ohio; a daughter and spouse, Mrs. Terry and Randy Roswell, of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, John Allawat, of New Jersey; five grandchildren and a spouse, Michael Shawn Allawat and companion, Angie Clark, Shawn Eric and Carrie Pratt, Jimmy Allawat, Tammy Harless and Danny Allawat; and two great-grandchildren, Bradley French and Christopher Harless. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Mike, Lee, Carl and Sam Allawat; and a sister, Ann Cupak. Martha H. McClure Pell
Martha Helen McClure Pell, 92, of Masontown, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at home. She was born Aug. 11, 1908, in Morgantown, daughter of the late William A. McClure and Ella Breakiron McClure. She graduated from Masontown High School in 1928. She attended Fairmont Normal School (now Fairmont State College) and received her teaching certification. She taught school in Preston County for 41 years, teaching in one- and two-room schools at North Union and Bull Run and at Reedsville Elementary and Masontown Elementary schools. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, canning and quilting and was a member of Masontown United Methodist Church and Preston County Retired School Employees Organization. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Helen and Jack Cole, of Reedsville; a grandson and "granddaughter," Brent and Vanessa Cole, of Illesheim, Germany; her special joy, great-grandson, Carson Cole, of Illesheim; and a sister, Alice Henry, of Grove City, Pa. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Hunter Pell, in 1994; three brothers, Lawrence McClure, Lloyd McClure and Luther McClure; and three sisters, Mabel McClure, Elizabeth Heath and Virginia Graham. Arlou H. Minney
Arlou H. Minney, 90, of Parkersburg, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born May 7, 1911, in Wilsie, daughter of the late Oscar and Nettie Meadows Hawkins. She graduated from Barracksville High School, Glenville Teachers College and WVU. She was a teacher/principal at Riverhill, Blennerhassett and Tygart schools. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Cray W. Minney, of Parkersburg; a son and spouse, Robert W. and Judith Minney, of Fairmont; a daughter and spouse, Mary Jane and John A. Balasko, of Morgantown; a sister, Wanda Weaver, of Walkersville; seven grandchildren, Craig and Sherry Mayfield, of Knoxville, Tenn., Pamela Minney, of Seattle, Wash., John and Lisa Balasko, of Morgantown, Stephen Minney, of Seattle, Janey Balasko, of Wilmington, N.C., Sarah Minney, of Fairmont and Hannah Minney, of Fairmont; and six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Peyton, Alexander and Grace Balasko, of Morgantown, and Emily and Paige Mayfield, of Knoxville. Catherine E. Dixon Holt
Catherine Ellen Dixon Holt, 79, of Brownsmill, near Arthurdale, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown. She was born April 4, 1922, at Pleasant Creek, near Philippi, daughter of the late Frederick Russell and Delia Ann Bartlett Dixon. She was a longtime member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Kingwood Fraternal Order of Eagles. She is survived by two sons and spouse, Larry Holt, of Akron, Ohio, and Don and Bonnie Holt, of Brownsmill; two daughters and spouse, Wilma L. and Thomas S. McClung, of Clifton Forge, Va., and Linda D. Holt, of Arthurdale; a brother, Bill Dixon, of Brownsmill; a sister, Elma Breitenstine, of Akron; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by four brothers; six sisters; and former husband Howard Holt. Emma Ruth Zimmerman
Emma Ruth Zimmerman, 88, of Mount Morris, Pa., died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, Pa. She was born May 14, 1913, at Bald Hill, Dunkard Township, Greene County, Pa., daughter of the late Grover and Mabel Mae Herod Donley. She was an active and faithful member of the Gospel Tabernacle Assembly of God Church in Mount Morris for more than 50 years. She is survived by two sons, John Wesley Zimmerman, of Orlando, Fla., and James Harry Zimmerman, of Winter Park, Fla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry T. Zimmerman, on Jan. 9, 1981; two brothers, Raymond and John Donley; and two sisters, Elsie Jones and Bertha Desellems. Rep. Moakley dies after bout with leukemia
BETHESDA, Md. (AP) -- Rep. Joseph Moakley, D-Mass., whose political career took him from the poor streets of South Boston to Capitol Hill, died Monday from complications of leukemia. Moakley, who announced in February that he suffered from an incurable form of leukemia, died at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in suburban Washington, according to associates and family members. Moakley, who died at 3:30 p.m., with friends and family including two of his brothers at his side, was 74 years old. The affable Moakley was the quintessential, old-time Boston Irish politician. After narrowly winning his first congressional election in 1972, he served 15 terms in Congress.

Leona Ruth Jackson
Leona Ruth Jackson, 63, of Glen Burnie, Md., and formerly of Point Marion, Pa., died Monday, May 28, 2001, at the home of her sister, Edith Summerfield, in Point Marion. She was born July 20, 1937, at Connellsville, Pa., daughter of the late William and Mary Hennen Miller. She is survived by five children, James Jackson, of Smithfield, Pa., Deborah Jackson, of Morgantown, Patricia McGaughey and Joanna Lemus, both of Baltimore, and Christina Bryant, of Glen Burnie; 18 grandchildren, Billie Jo Nicklow, Pamela Jackson, John Seigle, Angelee Murphy, Jamie McGaughey, Mark McGaughey, Angela McGaughey, Tiffany McGaughey, Nathan McGaughey, Rafael Lemus, Michael Lemus, Jessica Lemus, Leann Bryant, Christopher Joseph Bryant, Melissa Bryant, Kimberly Bryant, James Bryant and Julia White; 11 great-grandchildren, Tyler Nicklow, Jason Nicklow, Heather Nicklow, Justin Murphy, Timmy Seigle, Selena Seigle, Scott White, Joey White and Brianna White, Brittany Petrusik and David Sutter; and a special friend, Clyde Edgell. Nellie L. Fink
Nellie L. Fink, 92, of 430 E. Main St., Kingwood, formerly of Keyser, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at the home of Mary Alice Riggs, in Rowlesburg. She was born March 26, 1909, in Keyser, daughter of the late Isaac Trenter and Annie High Trenter Taylor. She was formerly employed at the Keyser Woolen Mill and the Celanese Amcelle Plant. She is survived by three sons and spouses, Ervin and Darlene Fink, of Kingwood, Jerry and Christine Fink, of Morgantown, and Douglas and Sherry Davey, of Akron, Ohio; a sister, Gladys Chaney, of Keyser; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, O.J. Taylor; her husband, Stanley Ervin Fink, on May 31, 1992; two brothers, Ernest and Ursell "Bud" Trenter; a stepson, Ralph Fink; and a stepgrandson, Jerry Don Fink. Robert Allen Travis
Robert Allen Travis, 53, of Point Marion, Pa., died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born May 8, 1948, in Point Marion, son of Gladys Menear Travis, of Point Marion and the late Grover Cleveland Travis. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Point Marion, a former member of the Boy Scouts of America, a 1969 graduate of Albert Gallatin High School, former carrier for the Herald-Standard and Point Marion newspapers, and for the past several years, assistant to the co-chairmen of the Albert Gallatin Regatta. He loved music and was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is also survived by a brother and spouse, Marvin E. and Gail Travis, of Levittown, Pa.; two sisters and a spouse, Nancy L. Travis, of Point Marion, Pa., and Anna Mae and Carl Weber, of Morgantown; two half sisters, Marcella Lyons, of Hunker, Pa., and Joann Dingle, of Morgantown; and an aunt and uncle, Loretta and Sparkey Fullmer, of Stewartstown. John J. Moscar Sr.
John J. Moscar Sr., 83, of Clarksburg, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Butler Memorial Hospital, Butler, Pa., after a long illness. He was born July 9, 1917, in Clarksburg, son of the late Samuel Moscar and Maria Varca Moscar. He lived in Butler, Pa., with his daughter, Bernadette Sanderson, since 1999. He was retired from Rolland Glass Co. after 46 years of service. He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the East View Community Action Association and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Clarksburg. He is survived by a son, John J. Moscar Jr., of La Plata, Md.; a daughter, Mrs. John (Bernadette) Sanderson, of Butler, Pa.; a sister, Mrs. Sam (Virginia) Oliverio, of Stonewood; and two grandchildren, Michelle and Brad Sanderson, of Butler. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Rose Bruno Moscar, in 1996; five sisters, Mrs. John (Rose) Mazzie, of Clarksburg, Mrs. Sam Jeannette Mazzie, of Bridgeport, Mrs. John (Jean) Matz, of Clarksburg, Mrs. Dominick (Angeline) Oliverio, of Stonewood, and Mrs. Frank (Frances) Laurie, of Clarksburg; three brothers, Joseph Moscar, of Nutter Fort, Anthony Moscar, of Clarksburg, and Bernard "Benny" Moscar, of San Diego. Corey John Giles, 28, of Grafton Road, Morgantown, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at home. He was born Jan. 30, 1973, in Morgantown, son of Larry Jr. and Kathryn Stevenson Giles. He was employed as a mechanic at Devonian Enterprises. He attended Morgantown Revival Center and enjoyed NASCAR, hunting and fishing. He is also survived by two brothers and a spouse, Larry III and Felicia Giles, of Morgantown, and Randy Giles, serving with the U.S. Navy in Japan, and his fiancee, Mika Kojima; a sister and spouse, Julie and Dana McKenzie, of Morgantown; his paternal grandfather, Lawrence Giles Sr., of Morgantown; his maternal grandmother, Edwina Squires, of Ocala, Fla.; a nephew, Ty Giles; and two nieces, Jessica and Brianna McKenzie, of Morgantown. Kenneth E. Garner Sr.
Kenneth E. Garner Sr., 64, of Massillon, Ohio, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at home. He was born Nov. 6, 1936, in Tunnelton, son of the late Kenneth R. and Lelah Wiles Garner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served as a radio operator 3rd class. He moved to Massillon in 1960 and began working for Timken Co., where he retired in 1994. He was a member of Massillon Baptist Temple. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Norma Weaver Garner, whom he married April 6, 1956; a son, Kenneth E. Garner Jr., of Tunnelton; a daughter and spouse, Trudy and Raymond Schlabach, of Massillon, Ohio; two sisters, Janet Wimer, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mary K. Thompson, of Moundsville; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Friends may call at James G. Paul Junior Boyles
Paul Junior Boyles, 77, of Grafton, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Grafton City Hospital of a sudden illness. He was born Aug. 31, 1924, in Barbour County, son of the late Walter Wade and Margaret Anna Boylen Boyles. He worked for the Chessie System and the B&O Railroad as car foreman, and also worked at the Bartlett Funeral Home. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen, and was active in Blueville Church of the Nazarene. He is survived by his wife, Anna Clyde Fawcett Boyles; two daughters and spouses, Rue Ann Boyles and Gary Lee Hoff, of Cincinatti, and Paula Joyce and Roy "Stick" Kesner, of Shinnston; five grandchildren, Cathi Swank, Lori Napier, Jayden Hoff, Kammy Spatz, and Joshua Kesner; eight great-grandchildren; a stepgrandson, Richard Riley; a brother and spouse, Gene and Flo Boyles, of Grafton; a sister-in-law, Barbara Boyles, of Akron, Ohio; and a daughter-in-law, Dottie Boyles, of Crawfordsville, Ind. Helen S. Queen Ritchie
Helen S. Queen Ritchie, 84, of Terra Alta, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Hopemont State Hospital, Terra Alta. She was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Clarksburg, daughter of the late Edgebert Lowellen and Lessie Orpha Scott Queen. She retired after 30 years as a nurse's aide at Hopemont State Hospital. She was a member of Terra Alta Assembly of God Church and Terra Alta Senior Citizens. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Sandra K. and Donald Bennett, of Oakland, Md.; a son and spouse, James H. and Sylvia Sypolt Jr., of Terra Alta; a brother, Edward L. Queen, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Ella L. Osborne, of Longbottom, Ohio, and Ruth Severe, of Tacoma Park, Md.; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmer D. Ritchie, in 1983; a daughter, Patty Jo Sypolt, in 1940; and two brothers, Wendell and Denver Queen. Friends may call at Arthur H. Ceasle A. Engle Johns
Ceasle A. Engle Johns, 86, formerly of Pixler Hill Road, Morgantown, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at City Hospital in Grafton. She was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Albright, daughter of the late Notley B. and Dessie V. Miller Engle. She was the last surviving member of her family of nine children. She retired as custodian for the Monongalia County Board of Education. She loved cleaning and cooking for her family. She is survived by two daughters, Anna Lee Petitt, of Kingwood, and Patty Vincent, of Dellslow; a son, Harold Johns, of Capon Bridge; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert Johns; a daughter, Judy Raye Johns; and a grandson, Robert Lee Stimmell. Friends may call at Fred L. Donald Foster Frazee
Preston County businessman Donald Foster Frazee, 64, of Hazelton and formerly of Friendsville, Md., died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born Dec. 26, 1936, in Friendsville, son of Norma Sisler Frazee, of Friendsville, and the late Foster Frazee. He was a fourth generation timber operator. He was president of Interstate Lumber Co. for 40 years and president of F&M Coal Co. He also was a partner in TAZ Lumber Co. All operations are based in Preston County. He was a member of Laurel Run Church of G od and numerous organizations. He is also survived by his wife, Judith Ann Uphold Frazee; a son, Larry D. "Pete" Frazee; two daughters, Debra A. Spear and Terri L. Williams, all of Friendsville; a stepson, Robert Ferguson, of Jane Lew; a brother, Edward Gene Frazee, of McHenry, Md.; a sister, Patty Frantz, of Friendsville; 12 grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jerri Jo Frazee, and a grandson, Alexander Nottingham. Leona M. Smith Palmer
Leona M. Smith Palmer, 77, of Kirtley Strauss, Wellsburg, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Nov. 6, 1923, at Wellsburg, daughter of the late Clyde E. and Vera Wallace Smith. She retired as a payroll manager after 30 years with WestVaco (Stone Container-Smurfit). She was a member of First Baptist Church of Wellsburg, treasurer for Friends of Brooke County Library, assistant treasurer and social committee chairperson of Wellsburg Civic League, secretary of the Brooke County CEOS Council, and CEO chairperson and council representative for the Tent CEO Council, Brooke County Senior Citizens and Wheeling Rounders square dance club. She was an avid gardener. She is survived by a son and spouse, G. Michael and Judith Kay Palmer, of Morgantown; two granddaughters, Michelle Palmer, of Germantown, Md., and Karen Palmer and fiance, Dan Wolff. of Dayton, Ohio; a sister and spouse, Joy S. and Mark Lewis, of Stowe, Ohio; and a brother and spouse, D. Wayne and Jean Smith, of Wellsburg. Friends may call at Reasner Funeral Home, 1515 Charles St., Wellsburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, with the Rev. Robert Romick officiating. Burial will be in Franklin Cemetery, Wellsburg.
