He was born May 27, 1978, in Fairmont, son of Adair Lee and Pennie Lynn Moon Sanford, of Chester, Va. He was a laborer for Daybrook Development Co. He attended Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church, Hoodsville. He was Protestant. He enjoyed the outdoors: hunting and fishing, and horseback and motorcycle riding. He is also survived by two sisters and spouse, Veronica Lynn and Robert A. Wright, of Fairview, and Amanda Jo Sanford, of Richmond, Va.; two stepsisters, Bonita, of Washington, and Pamela, of North Carolina; two nieces, Kelsi L. Wright and Morgan T. Orpha Inez Funk
Orpha Inez Funk, 92, of Newburg (York Run community), died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Heartland of Preston County. She was born March 19, 1907, in Preston County, daughter of the late William Joseph and Adis Mae Funk Burns. She was a homemaker, loving mother and grandmother, and a member of Yorks Run United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Guy Funk Jr., of Newburg; five daughters and spouses, Cora and Paul Christopher, and Mary Andrews, all of Masontown, Iris Funk, of Newburg, Carrie Funk and Thomas, of Atwater, Ohio, and Avis Funk, of Akron, Ohio; a sister, Chloey Goff, of Rowlesburg; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Deborah Sue Sowell
Deborah Sue Sowell, 52, of 1061 Meadowlark Drive, Harrisonburg, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. She was born April 24, 1947, in Morgantown, daughter of the late William Ernest and Emma Marie Lanham King. She graduated from Morgantown High School. She was employed for 16 years at WVU and eight years at Time Warner Cable in Harrisonburg. She was a member of Best Friends Breast Cancer Support Group. She attended New Hope Baptist Church, McGaheysville. She is survived by her husband, John A. 'Tony' Sowell, whom she married July 7, 1985; a daughter, Johnna Marie Sowell, at home; a sister, Pamela Raad, of Mannington; and two brothers, Kenneth King and Keith King, both of Morgantown. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Wittebort and June White, and two brothers, William Dale King and Donald Eugene King. Margaret F. 'Mae' Trackemas, 85, of Point Marion, Pa., died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in Uniontown (Pa.) Hospital. She was born Dec. 3, 1913, in McAdoo, Pa., daughter of the late William and Mary Uses Trackemas. She was a lifelong resident of Point Marion. She was a member of St. Hubert Roman Catholic Church, Point Marion, the Christian Women's Society and Point Marion Senior Citizens. She is survived by her sister, Mollie Valentine, of Point Marion, five nieces and four nephews. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Eva Takovich, and three brothers, William, Joseph and Albert Trackemas. Friends may call at Louis E. Paul R. Owens
Paul R. 'Tex' Owens, 72, of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Newburg, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Bowie, Md. He was born Aug. 2, 1927, in Grafton, son of the late Ollie E. and Catherine Fair Owens. He was a member of St. Mathias Catholic Church, Lanham, Md. He retired as a mechanic for Metro Bus Lines and was a World War II veteran. He is survived by a brother, Ollie J. Owens, and a sister-in-law, Rosa Owens, both of Kingwood. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and a niece. There will be no public visitation. Graveside service at Maplewood Cemetery will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, with the Rev. Mard Ward CP officiating and rites by VFW posts of Preston County. Lewis Winfred Lemley
Lewis Winfred Lemley, 81, of 3452 Hersey St., San Diego, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, in San Diego. He was born June 23, 1918, in Daybrook, son of the late Lewis Russell and Bertha Moore Lemley. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired after 20 years of service. He also was a retired custodian for the Board of Education with 20 years of service. He was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice Benson Lemley; a daughter and spouse, Maureen and Dennis LaBerge, of San Diego; a brother, Learnie Lemley, of Pentress; three sisters, Minnie Tennant, of Hundred, Betty Tennant, of Blacksville, and Jane Tennant, of Route 1, Burton; and two grandchildren, Natalie and Stephanie LaBerge. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Ann Lemley; two brothers, Leroy Lemley and Willie Lemley; and a sister, Cathern Shaw. Joseph Mainenti, 85, of 1007 Lucas Drive, Morgantown, formerly of Weirton, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 14, 1913, in Hopedale, Ohio, son of the late Cesare and Louise Mainenti. He was a retired employee of Weirton Steel Co. and the Hancock County Board of Education. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Independent Steel Workers Union, the 25-Year Club of Weirton and the Maranatha Assembly of God in Weirton. He is survived by two daughters and spouses, Rita and John D'Aurora, of Morgantown, and Janice and Charles Hill, all of Wheeling; a son and spouse, Raymond and Carol Mainenti, of Morgantown; a brother, Attilio Mainenti, of Costa Mesa, Calif.; a sister, Albina Luccareli, of Costa Mesa; four grandchildren, David D'Aurora, of Allentown, Pa., Michael Jackson, of Delaware, Ohio, Lt. Edward Robert Golden
Edward Robert 'Ted' Golden, 79, of Morgantown, formerly of Wheeling, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Monongalia General Hospital, in Morgantown. He was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Warwood, son of the late Edward Evans and Charlotte Ball Golden. He was a member of the Christ Anglican Church, in Warrenton, Va. He was a Freemason for more than 50 years. He received his bachelor's degree from Bethany College and his master's degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He joined the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra at age 14, and played with the Wheeling Steel Musical Steelmakers NBC Radio Program from 1938-1942. He entered the Navy in 1942 and served as captain of a landing craft in the amphibious force participating in the initial assaul t during World War II at Normandy, France. He was an MAI Real Estate Appraiser Member of the Appraisal Institute. He was a member of the Naval Reserve Association, U.S. Naval Institute, Army-Navy Club on Farragut Square, in Washington, D.C., Ohio Lodge A F&AM, 32 degree Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, SJ USA, Commandery 30 Royal Arch Masons, Order of the Eastern Star, Osiris Temple AAONMS, of Wheeling, and Kappa Alpha Order. He is survived by two daughters and spouses, Pamela Jean Golden and A.D. Wilson, of Wheeling, and Marsha Virginia and John Zimsky, of Sterling, Va.; a son, Christian Marchal Golden, of Markham, Va.; a sister, Helen C. Roberts, Jupiter, Fla.; five grandchildren, and Gino and Michele Golden-Ballarin, of Markham. He was also preceded in death by a brother, E. Gordon Golden, and a sister, Eleanore Golden. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Junior L. Beulah Marie Thomas, 92, of Arbors at Fairmont Nursing Home, formerly of Northview Addition, Mannington, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Arbors at Fairmont Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 28, 1907, at Mannington, daughter of Jefferson Davis and Leora Spencer Holbert. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, of Mannington. She worked at Jones Department Store in Fairmont for many years. She enjoyed quilting. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Clelland, of Mannington; three grandchildren and spouses, James and Jane Clelland, of Dennison, Ohio, Linda Brennan and Kim and Jeff Thorne, all of Mannington; eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Arlie 'Nitzi' Thomas; four brothers, Clarence, Thurman Dee, John and Ray Holbert; and five sisters, Jessie Glover, Tessie Kendall, Jeanette Jones, Bessie Rinehart and Dora Myers. Eva Ellen Tennant, 89, of Cassville, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Monongalia General Hospital, in Morgantown. She was born Feb. 4, 1910, at Jakes Run, daughter of the late Alva and Bertha Tennant Varner. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Dents Runs Boulevard, Westover. She was also an avid bingo player at the Cassville VFD. She is survived by six sons, William Alva Tennant, Arlie Ray Tennant, Marvin Gale Tennant, Melvin Earl Tennant and Charles James Tennant, all of Cassville, and Frankie Dale Tennant, of Jere; six daughters, Mary Olive Gaskill and Esther Faye Stemmell, both of Carroll, Ohio, Nancy Louise Shriver, of Youngstown, Ohio, Carolyn Sue Tennant and Mabel Roseann Smith, both of Cassville, and Norma Jean DeMastes, of Blacksville; a sister, Jettie Tennant, of Morgantown; 54 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Tennant, in 1956; a daughter, Bertha Ellen Tennant; four brothers, Homer Varner, Denny Varner, Charlie Varner and Bud Varner; and three sisters, Mable Brewer, Goldie Brewer and Laura Willard. Hillis M. Henry
Word has been received of the death of Hillis M. Henry, 73, on Oct. 25, 1999, at Citizens Hospital in Victoria, Texas. He was born March 31, 1926, in Monongalia County, son of the late David Gilbert and Madeline Hacker Henry. He retired after 23 years in the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Reda Henry, of Victoria, Texas; two brothers and spouses, Charles and Dorothy Henry, of Akron, Ohio, and Paul and Shirley Henry, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; four sisters and three spouses, Kathelene and Jim Phillips, Pauline and Lynn Casteel, Dorothy Moore, and Betty and Robert McIe, all of Morgantown. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. He was cremated. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Rebecca Elizabeth Rose
Rebecca Elizabeth Rose, 81, of Halpine Street, Morgantown, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Morgan Manor Nursing Facility. She was born Nov. 24, 1917, in Nicholas County, daughter of the late William and Bertha Rapp Wright. She was a former employee of Morgan Shirt Factory, Sterling Faucet and Peerless Laundries. She was a homemaker. She is survived by a stepson, Beryl Rose, of Webster County; a sister, Lydia Scaife, of Williamsport, Pa.; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Okey M. Rose; a stepson, Noah Rose; two brothers and four sisters. C. Paul Barth, 86, of Gaston Avenue, Fairmont, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born Sept. 27, 1913, in Limestone Ridge, Wetzel County, son of the late Walter J. Sr. and Golda Wilson Barth. He was a graduate of Fairview High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served with the See Bee's during World War II. He retired from the local Pipe Fitters Union 152. He also operated a farm for 45 years. He was a member of Aurora Lodge 43 AF&A Masons at Newburg. He was a member of the Valley, of Morgantown, Scottish Rite Bodies and the Fairmont State College Falcon Club. He is survived by a son and spouse, Frederick and Judy Barth, of Los Angeles; three brothers, Walter J. Barth Jr., of Fairview, William A. Barth, of Fairmont, and Warren E. Barth, of McGraw, N.Y.; and a sister, Marion Jean Saler, of Carlsbad, N.M. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Evelyn 'Tiny' Bolyard Barth, on May 25, 1996. Robert C. Thompson
Robert C. Thompson, 68, of Morse Gardens Apartments, Sarah Street, Pittsburgh, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at the University Medical Center, in Pittsburgh. He was born Feb. 2, 1931, in Marion County, son of the late Orval Lee and Willa Pearl Murphy Thompson. He was a former resident of Florida and Clarksburg. He was a restaurant and bar owner in Florida for many years and was well-known in the area as an accomplished piano player. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He is survived by three aunts, Bertha Nutter, of Clarksburg, Juanita Wiseman and Opal Hunt, and a cousin, Bernice Robinson, of Clarksburg. Cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date with inurnment at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.

Gary Charles Shaw
Gary Charles Shaw, 50, of Route 1, Thornton, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at Nashville (Tenn.) Memorial Hospital. He was born July 21, 1949, in Grafton, son of Charles B. Shaw, of Grand Street, Grafton, and Eileen G. Edwards Shaw, of North Pike Street, Grafton. He was a correctional employee for 28 years. He was employed at the Pruntytown Correctional Center, where he was a major. He had also been employed at Huttonsville and Moundsville correctional centers. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Korea. He was a 1967 graduate of Grafton High School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and VFW Memorial City Post 3081. He also is survived by his wife, Monica Shaw; two children, Christy Ann Shaw Mullens, and her husband, Hunter, of Parkview Community, and Gary Clint Shaw, at home; a brother and spouse, Larry Allen and Linda Rogers Shaw, of Grafton; a granddaughter, Camille Eileen Marie Mullens and a grandchild whose expected birth is in April 2000; a niece, Lynette Shaw, of Grafton; and a nephew, Lance Shaw, of Grafton. He was born Sept. 28, 1939, in Ursini Reggio Calaburia, Italy, son of the late Ilario Antonio and Maria Antonia Panetta Ierace. He was a former employee of Frank Tires, Fairmont, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He is survived by a daughter, Rose Ierace, of Fairmont; a sister, Gioconda Ierace, of Italy; two grandsons, Michael and Martin, both of Fairmont, and a niece, Desiree Ierace, of Italy. Thomas W. Davis, 86, of the Old Kingwood Pike, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at home. He was born Feb. 21, 1913, at Sandbank, Monongalia County, son of the late William Arlington 'Arlie' and Lucy Louisa Blosser Davis. He retired from West Virginia University Physical Plant in 1978. He was a former employee of Greer and the Decker's Creek Sandbank. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 548, of Morgantown. He was Methodist. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Opal M. Dalton Davis; a daughter, Darlene E. Hall, of Morgantown; a brother, Ernest Davis, of Port Richey, Fla.; five sisters, Virginia McDonald, Suzanne Rodeheaver, Francis Hagedorn, Francis Lowe, all of Morgantown and Willodean White, of Newton Falls, Ohio; six grandchildren, Bobby and Debby Deavers, George Hall, Mary Jo Wilburn, Junie and Ginger Ault; six great-grandchildren, Jimmy and Jason Wilburn, Robby and Tommy Deavers, Danielle and April Dawn Ault; and fa ithful companion Trixie. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Arlene R. Davis, on Oct. 7, 1985; three brothers, Lloyd Davis, Frank Davis and James Davis. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, and from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. VFW Post 548 will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home 7:30 p.m. Friday. Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, with the Rev. David Hilling officiating. Burial will follow at Davis Cemetery. VFW Post 548 will conduct graveside military services.
