Janet Poling
Janet M. Poling, 50, of Blue Horizon Road, Morgantown, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at home. She was born Sept. 10, 1950, in Browns Chapel, daughter of the late Kenneth and Geneva Trickett Matthew. She was a member of the Dunkard Township Grange 2045 and the Mapletown Band Boosters. She worked for Vance Auto Parts in Morgantown as the office manager. She also worked at the Roush Motors in Mount Morris, Pa. She was a 1968 graduate of Morgantown High School. She is survived by her husband, Thomas A. Poling, whom she married Oct. 7, 1984; two daughters, Christie Lemasters Hedrick, and Terri J. Poling, both of Mount Morris; two grandchildren, Matthew "Bumpkin" Hedrick, and Sierra "Cupcake" Hedrick; two sisters, Oleta Williams, of Fairmont, and Inez Sapp, of Grafton; and a brother, Robert Matthew, of Browns Chapel. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Hattie Watkins; and a brother, William "Billy" Matthew. William Woodrow Poling
William Woodrow Poling, 87, of Independence, Preston County, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at home. He was born March 14, 1914, in Preston County, son of the late Christopher Columbus Poling and Ivy Poling. He was a laborer in the coal mines, and was Methodist. He is survived by a sister, Roda Poling Miller; a daughter, Mary Daff, of Parsons; a stepson, Robert Reid, of Clarksburg; a half brother and spouse, John and Rosa Lee Poling, of Masontown; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Evelyn McGill Poling, in 1983; several brothers and sisters; a great-granddaughter; and a great-grandson. Friends may call at Bartlett Funeral Home, Grafton, from 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 16, with the Rev. H. Edgar Suite officiating. Arlie Richard Leonard
Arlie Richard "Dick" Leonard, 78, of Grafton, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Grafton City Hospital. He was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Grafton, son of the late Arlie E. and Eileen Patton Leonard. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd United Methodist, where he had served as one of the choir's first directors. He was a graduate of Grafton High School and West Virginia Wesleyan College, later serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was associated with his father in Leonard's Grocery for 19 years, and then owned and operated 4 Corners Restaurant in Grafton until his retirement. He was past president and lieutenant governor of the Grafton Kiwanis, a member of the American Legio* and VFW, and a former member of the Taylor County Commission, Taylor County Planning Commission, Public Housing and Renewal, and past president of the West Virginia Restaurant Association. He is survived by a brother and spouse, D. Robert and Phyllis Leonard, of Grafton; and six nieces and nephews, Karol Moran, Crystal Rakosky, D. Robert Leonard III, Rick Leonard, Bruce Leonard and John E. Linn. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jackie; and a sister, Frances Kinsey. A memorial service will be at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 22, with the Rev. Bert Coffman officiating. Ronald Franklin Crouse
Ronald Franklin "Rooster" Crouse, 56, of Healthy Heights, Morgantown, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 24, 1944, in Bridgeport, son of Nellie Ross Crouse, of McConnellsville, Ohio, and the late Ray C. Crouse. He was a coal miner for Martinka Mine Southern Ohio Coal in Fairmont and Fairfax Mine Patriot Coal in Sycamore. He attended Mount View Free Methodist Church and was a member of UMWA Local 1949. He is survived by five daughters and spouses, Ronda Wasco, Michelle and Gerald Marshall Jr., Connie and Bobby Hart, Melissa Crouse and Rebecca Crouse, all of Morgantown; a son, Ronald Curtis Crouse, of Morgantown; a brother and spouse, Ray and Marilyn Crouse, of Malta, Ohio; five sisters and spouses, Barbara and Leroy Gregis, of Canal Fulton, Ohio, Carolyn Bee, of Wolf Summit, Linda and Bill Hogue, of Clarksburg, Regina and Chris Nichols, of Malta, and Donna and Joe Cosgrave, of Stockport, Ohio; an aunt and spouse, Kitty and Darrell Woodson, of Clarksburg; and six grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Crouse; a sister, Brenda Crouse; and two grandchildren. Friends may call at McCulla Funeral Home from 4-9 p.m. Thursday. Theodore Neswald Sr.
Theodore Neswald Sr., 89, of Pinehurst Drive, Morgantown, formerly of Plum Run, Mannington, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 13, 1911, in Passaic, N.J., son of the late Wilhelm and Pauline Reve Neswalbe. He was employed at Reaction Motors in Rockaway, N.J., where he worked on various projects, including the X-15 rocket engine. He later worked at Potter's Aeronautical, where he was a metallurgist and experimental welder. He received commendations from the U.S. Department of Defense for his contributions to military technology. He was also a personal friend of Ernest Hemingway. He is survived by his wife, Ruby B. Moulton Neswald, of Morgantown; two sons, Burton Neswald, of Morgantown, and Theodore Neswald Jr., of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three grandchildren, Burton "Chip" Neswald Jr., of Mannington, and Aaron and Kayla Neswald, of St. Petersburg; a great-grandson, Burton Neswald III; and two great-granddaughters, Amy and Jennifer. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Otto Neswald. Friends may call at the family farm on Plum Run in Mannington for fellowship in memory at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21. Ernest G. Santangelo, 89, formerly of Long Valley, N.J., died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Wishing Well Manor, Fairmont. He was born Oct. 25, 1911, in Dover, N.J., son of the late Saverio and Frances Petroface Santangelo. He was formerly employed with the federal government at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover. He was Catholic. He is survived by his wife, June Parr Santangelo, of Toms River, N.J.; a son, Gerard Santangelo, of Crimora, Va.; three daughters, Jeri-Sue Santangelo, of Morgantown, Kathleen Bressler, of Long Valley, and Audrey Santangelo, of Port Orchard, Wash.; four brothers; two sisters; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Martha Smith Johnson
Martha Smith Johnson, 49, of Blosser Hill, Lake Lynn, Pa., died Thursday, July 19, 2001. She was born Nov. 11, 1951, in Uniontown, Pa., daughter of the late Simon and Mary Belle Cooley Smith. She was a member of the Church of the Inner Court in Uniontown, and was employed at Ruby Memorial Hospital as a clinical associate. She loved helping others in need, and performed many acts of kindness and charity in the Point Marion area. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Johnson; three daughters and spouses, Mary Jane and Roger Brenneman, of Grantsville, Md., Janet and Moe, Moreland, of Lake Lynn, and Amanda and Harry Wilson, of Fairchance, Pa.; five grandchildren, Jimmy Lawrence, Johnathan, and Emily Wilson, and Lauren, and Elizabeth Moreland; a sister, Louise VanKirk, of Masontown, Pa.; four brothers, Jess Smith, of Point Marion, Robert Smith, and Frank Smith, both of Cleveland, Leonard "Smitty" Smith, of Brooklyn, Ohio; and a dear friend, Verna Krause, of Dilliner, Pa. Ralph Ronald Hayes
Ralph Ronald Hayes, 68, of Tyrone Road, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 13, 1932, in Adrian, Upshur County, son of the late Benjamin and Jennettie Hunt Hayes. He was employed with Sterling Faucet Co. for 40 years. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He is survived by two daughters and a spouse, Karen Rebecca Smyth and companion Charles L. Lott, and Rhonda and John Beckner, with whom he lived, all of Morgantown; two grandchildren, Jason Beckner, and Amber Robertson; three great-grandchildren, Heather, Ashland and Dax; four sisters and a spouse, Dora Westfall, of Kentucky, Ruby Wheaton, of Garrettsville, Ohio, Wilma Harman, of Buckhannon, and Shirley and James Bosley, of Morgantown; a brother and spouse, Hartsell and Mary Lou Hayes, of Rock Cave; and his first wife, Eva Lou Metz. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lance and Gerald Hayes; and a great-grandson, Jacob Wade Beckner. Cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home. Charlotte Newbraugh
Charlotte Newbraugh, 45, of Grafton, died Wednesday July 18, 2001, at Grafton City Hospital. She was born July 28, 1955, in Lorain, Ohio, daughter of the late Hugh and Jewell Dearing Wilkerson. She was a housewife, and enjoyed flower gardening, church activities and volunteering with the elderly. She was also activities director at Rosewood Nursing Home in Grafton, and was a member of Blueville Nazerene Church, Grafton. She is survived by her husband, Carl Newbraugh, of Grafton; a daughter, Amee Newbraugh, of Grafton; a son, Frank Newbraugh, of Grafton; two grandsons, Jarod Newbraugh, and Derek Newbraugh, both of Grafton; four brothers and a spouse, Carl Wilkerson, and Alvis Wilkerson, both of Lorain, Donald and Norma Wilkerson, of Massillon, Ohio, and William "Bill" Wilkerson, of Sheffield Lake, Ohio; and three sisters, Shirley Reuter, of Sheffield Lake, Sharon Dull and Brenda Wilkerson, both of Lorain. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Wilkerson, in 1969; and a sister, Joyce Carrender, in 1992. Jo-An Vera Melczak
Jo-An Vera Melczak, 51, of Hundred, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 8, 1949, in Pittsburgh. She was Catholic. She was a graduate of St. John's School, in Pittsburgh. She was employed with St. John's Hospital as a nursing supervisor until the hospital's closing, and then worked as a nursing supervisor at nursing homes. She was an avid bingo player, and was married in 1970 on her way to a bingo game. She enjoyed her flower gardens, bird watching, and counting birds for the Audubon Society. She is survived by her husband, Robert Melczak, of Hundred; a son, Erik Melczak, of Hundred; two sisters, Rose DeBar, and Linda Richards, both of Pittsburgh; a brother, Frank Richards, of Pittsburgh; and two half-brothers, Joe Miller, and Ray Richards, both of Pittsburgh. Hazel V. Smock, 76, of Kingwood, formerly of Uniontown, Pa., died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Heartland of Preston County. She was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Leadmine, daughter of the late William Duncan and Maude Elizabeth Montgomery Likens. She was a housewife and had worked at Morgan Shirt Factory, the S&H Green Stamp Store in Uniontown, and was a member of Uniontown Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Thurman E. Smock; three brothers, John and Elmer Likens, both of Rowlesburg, and Homer Likens, of Hamilton; a sister, Mabel Buckingham, of Baltimore; and several nieces and nephews, including Shirley Willford and Donna Rhodes. Charles A. Mayfield
Charles A. Mayfield, 55, of Avery Knoll, Morgantown, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at home. He was born Nov. 3, 1945, in Masontown, son of Lucille Chipps Mayfield, of Masontown, and the late Wade Hampton Mayfield. He was a disabled veteran, having served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 174 in Dellslow and Masontown VFW Post 1589. He was Baptist. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Camille Nardiello Mayfield; four sons and spouses, Rick and Tina Hughes, of Johnstown, Pa., Richard and Robin Hughes, of Saxton, Pa., Steven and Michelle Hughes, of Morgantown, and Sal Hughes and fiancee, Shawnn West, of Morgantown; three daughters and spouses, Brenda and Larry Keck, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Charlene and Todd Queen, and Lucy Mayfield, all of Morgantown; three brothers, Howard Hartley, of Kingwood, John Huffman, of Ellenboro, N.C., and Michael W. She is survived by a son, Steve Hayes, of Warrensville Heights, Ohio; two daughters and spouses, Lana and Wally Paulauskas, of Newberry, S.C., and Jerri Lee and Paul Kubala, of Maple Heights, Ohio; a sister, Ilonda McIlvain, of Weston; nine children and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Hayes Jr., on Nov. 22, 1986; and a sister, Virginia Hamilton. Herman Leroy Moran, 59, of Grafton, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at home. He was born July 26, 1941, in Grafton, son of the late Fred Lee Moran and Goldie Marguerite Corely Moran. He was a machinist with the Minnotte Machine Corp., of Fairmont, and was Methodist. Mary Bicanich Moen
Mary Bicanich Moen, 83, of MonPointe Continuing Care Center, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at MonPointe. She was born Oct. 25, 1917, in Buckner, Ill., daughter of the late Joseph and Rosalia Hlebec Bicanich. She was a retired seamstress and was Roman Catholic. She is survived by three daughters, Connie Crider and Sharon Turner, both of Morgantown, and Marilyn Knouse, of Cheat Lake; a son, Bill Drosky, of South San Francisco, Calif.; a sister, Rose DeAnglo, of Lebanon, Pa.; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Paul M. Soccorsi
Paul M. Soccorsi, 72, of Morgantown, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at home. He was born Dec. 6, 1928, in Bretz, son of the late Louis and Marian Bartoletta Soccorsi. He was a graduate of Masontown High School. He was a retired superintendent for the City of Morgantown. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a former member of the Knights of Columbus, and a longtime member of St. Theresa/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Daddezio Soccorsi; a son, Louis Paul Soccorsi, of Morgantown; a daughter, Andrea Soccorsi, of Morgantown; a sister and spouse, Louise and John Kopinski, of Morgantown; and three grandchildren, Jared D. Soccorsi, Deanna Soccorsi and Jessica Soccorsi. Dorothy Cummings
Dorothy Pauline Bower Cummings, 87, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Marion Health Care Hospital. She was born May 2, 1914, in Montana Mines, daughter of the late Rose Jones Curnutte and Ruben Curnutte. She graduated from Fairview High School in 1932, and retired from G.C. Murphy Co. in 1976, with 25 years of service. She was Christian. She had been Sunday school teacher, Bible study teacher, and helped in any way that was needed in the church. She last attended Mount Sharon Free Methodist Church. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Jane and Don Hayhurst, of Fairmont, with whom she had made her home for 10 years before entering Marion Health Care Hospital; two sons and spouses, Robert and Nellie Bower, of Fairmont, and James and Billie Jo Bower, of Huntington; two brothers, Drexel Curnutte, of Greencastle, Pa., and Chester Curnutte, of Morgantown; nine grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Luther Bower, in December 1958; her second husband, Thomas Cummings, in December 1981; and three brothers, Eugene Curnutte, Junior Curnutte and Donald Curnutte. There will be no visitation. Graveside service will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens at 1 p.m. Friday, July 27, with the Rev. O.D. Harman officiating. Mary H. Miller, 89, of Gormania, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland, Md. She was born June 30, 1912, in Bayard, daughter of the late Thomas and Molly Minnick Miller. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Methodist Women. An active senior citizen, she was a member of the Grant County Homemakers. She is survived by a daughter, Elsie V. Stemple, of Aurora; a son, Rodney Leroy Miller, of Winchester, Va.; a foster daughter, Mary Rush, of Oakland, Md.; a sister, Edith Hickey, of Keyser; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Idamay, and the ladies association in Idamay, as well as a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of more than 71 years, William E. Green; two daughters and spouses, Mary Louise and Jack Pitzer, of LaPlata, Md., and Elizabeth "Libby" and Charles Cunningham, of Shinnston; a son, Jennings Green, of Fairmont; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Green; two brothers, Harry Nowlan and Clarence Beaver; and three sisters, Goldie Clevenge, Grace Westfall and Rose Hensley.
