Joseph C. Duff
Joseph C. Duff, 78, died Monday, July 30, 2001, of pulmonary fibrosis at Anne Arundel Medical Center, in Annapolis, Md. He was a longtime baseball coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, and a former West Virginia University graduate and sports standout. He excelled in basketball and baseball at WVU. He played for the 1946-47 Mountaineer basketball team that was 19-3 and finished fourth in the National Invitational Tournament. He once held the West Virginia single-season record for free-throw percentage and received the first Roger L. Hicks Memorial Trophy in 1950, given to the outstanding Mountaineer basketball player. After graduating WVU in 1950, he coached baseball and basketball for two years at Union High School in New Jersey. He went to Annapolis in 1953, coaching four decades of midshipmen as baseball coach, assistant basketball coach and physical education professor. His 32 varsity baseball teams at Navy were 595-332-11, and appeared in three NCAA tournaments, while capturing five league championships. Eleven midshipmen who played baseball of basketball for him have gone on to achieve the rank of admiral in the Navy, or general in the Marine Corps or Air Force, including current superintendent of the Naval Academy, Vice Adm. John R. Ryan. Two Heisman Trophy winners, Joe Bellino and Roger Staubach, played for him, as did two players who were on the U.S. Pan American Baseball teams. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Marine Corps as a radio operator for an artillery observer in Pelileu. He was inducted into the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1995, was given a Lifetime Achievement in Baseball Award from the Washington Home Plate Club, and was inducted into the West Virginia Sportswriters Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; two daughters, Hilary Gonzales, of Annapolis, and Phebe Duff, of Little Rock, Ark.; and three grandchildren, Sarah Gonzales and Elizabeth Gonzales, both of Annapolis, and Aaron Christie, of Little Rock; and a sister, An* Hale, of Bridgeport, N.Y. He was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Bilney. Friends may call at Taylor Funeral Home, Annapolis, from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. Earl O. Sims
The Rev. Earl O. Sims, 73, of Falling Water, died Monday, July 30, 2001. He was a retired minister in the Assembly of God Church with more than 30 years of service. He and his wife ran the church campground. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gladys Hixenbaugh Sims; a son, David Sims, of Falling Water; a daughter, Phyllis Endrich, of Hagerstown, Md.; a brother, Luther Dale Sims, of Morgantown; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl B. Sims, in 1969; his mother, Eliza L. Sims, in 1984; and six brothers. Nina Mae Mayfield
Nina Mae Emerson Mayfield, 85, formerly of Herring Road, Manown, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Heartland of Preston County in Kingwood. She was born Sept. 18, 1915, in Masontown, daughter of the late Raleigh Adam and Ella Francis Neff Emerson. She was a member of Albright Baptist Church and a lifetime member of Masontown VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Charles Dennis Mayfield, of Heartland of Preston County; a sister, Nona Roccon, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Glenn Ambrose Emerson, Ralph Emmitt Emerson and Lonnie Emerson, William Franklin Emerson and Fred Emerson; and four sisters, Dolly Emerson, Alice Abrams, Nellie Moran and Lillie Belle Pifer. Service will be at Waldeck Funeral Home in Masontown at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, with the Rev. Greg Kasler officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Kingwood.

Doyle William Frame
Doyle William Frame, 82, of Fairmont, died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Fairmont General Hospital. He was born June 11, 1919, in Rosedale, son of the late Hubert M. and Pearl Mohr Frame. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of Christ. He served in Europe in World War II with the Eighth Air Force. He worked for L.A. Hess Transfer and Food Haul in Fairmont, and retired with 34 years of service as a tractor truck driver with Fairmont's Owens-Illinois glass plant. He was a member of the American Legion, in Fairmont. He is survived by his wife, Delphia Andrews Frame; a son and spouse, James A. and Vickie Kisner Frame, of Fairmont; a stepdaughter and spouse, Linda and James Saylor, of Fairfax, Va.; two stepgrandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; and several nieces an d nephews. He was preceded in death by two step-grandchildren, Bruce Johnson and Kimberly McGinnis; a brother, Emerson Monroe Frame; and a sister, Lorena Bonnett. Jack C. Alonso Sr.
Jack G. Alonso Sr., 80, of Clarksburg, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Clarksburg Continuous Care Center. He was born Feb. 22, 1921, in Clarksburg, son of the late Roman and Rita Fernandez Alonso. He worked 42 years at Rolland Glass Co. and retired from Jerry Run Glass Co. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He enjoyed carpentry and woodworking. He was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church, in Clarksburg's Northview community. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Angeline "Angie" Lopez Alonso, whom he married Sept. 3, 1944; a son, Jack G. "Chico" Alonso Jr., of Clarksburg; a daughter and spouse, Vanessa R. and Richard Roach, of Gassaway; four grandchildren, J.R. Roach, Tammy Roach, Ryan Roach and Heather Roach; a great-grandson, Trey Roach; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Bartolo Funeral Home, 515 W. Goldie Bell Hooton
Goldie Bell Hooton, 86, formerly of Morgantown, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at her daughter's home. She was born Sept. 27, 1914, in Preston County, daughter of the late Earl Victor and Bessie Regina Stanley Stafford. She is survived by her stepmother, Evelyn Hooton Stafford, of Canyon; a daughter, Rosemary Frankhouser, of Princeton; a son, Robert Paul Strawser, of Westover; two brothers, Herbert Brinley Stafford, of Deweyville, Texas, and Clifford Stafford; four half brothers, Victor Stafford and French Stafford, both of Morgantown, and Terry Stafford and Rodney Stafford, both of Preston County; two half sisters, Patricia Ralston, of California, and Nadine Orchard, of Morgantown; and two stepgrandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lester Mark Hooton; a stepdaughter, Mary Lou Tennant; two brothers, William Stafford and Evertt Stafford; a half brother, Randy Stafford; and two sisters, Jessie Walters and Alice Turner. Heidi Michelle Payne
Heidi Michelle Payne, 36, of Stow, Ohio, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, after a long battle with leukemia. She was the daughter of Leon and Rosanna Payne, of Stow. She was a 1983 graduate of Stow High and Liberty University and was a graduate student recently at University of Rochester. She had also been with Campus Crusade for seven years, including time at West Virginia University. She is also survived by a brother, Kevin Payne. Mary Joseph D. Shroyer
Mary Joseph Duckworth Shroyer, 85, of Pike Street, Grafton, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg. She was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Buffalo Creek, Wayne County, daughter of the late Sydney and Myrtle Green Plymale. She was employed at the former Hazel Atlas Glass Co. and was retired from the former W.Va. Plastic Co. of Grafton. She was a member of the Fetterman United Methodist Church of Grafton and the Taylor County Senior Citizens. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by two children and spouses, Richard H. and Sharon Duckworth and Donna Kay and Charles Kuhn, all of Grafton; four grandchildren and spouses, Dina and Tim Richards, Tammy and Bill Sheme, Richard and Kelley Duckworth and Pamela and Danny Bartlett, all of Grafton; seven great-grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Leland H. Duckworth; her second husband, Smith H. Shroyer; four brothers; two sisters; and a daughter-in-law, Karen "Sue" Duckworth. John C. Hockenberry Jr.
John C. Hockenberry Jr., 82, of Canonsburg, Pa., formerly of Nemacolin, Pa., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Beverly Health Care, Canonsburg. He was born Jan. 1, 1919, in Graceton, Pa., son of the late John Clyde Hockenberry Sr. and Edna Grace Clawson Hockenberry. He was a 1936 graduate of Cumberland Township High School in Carmichaels, Pa., and a 1940 graduate of Waynesburg College. He was a member of Greene Valley Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels. He was also a member of the United Steel Workers of America. He worked as a chemist at the Duquesne Works of the U.S. Steel Corp. until his retirement in 1972. He is survived by a brother, Dale M. Hockenberry, of Nemacolin. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Capuzzi. Friends may call at Yoskovich Funeral Home, 300 S. Vine St., Carmichaels, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Isadora Higgins Cosgray
Isadora Higgins Cosgray, 84, of 4199 W. Roy Furman Highway, Waynesburg, Pa., died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg. She was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Littleton, daughter of the late James O. Higgins and Columbia Rush Higgins. She was a member of Church of Christ in Littleton. She worked for more than 20 years as a case worker for the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare, retiring in 1981. She was also a homemaker. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara C. Moore, of R.D. 4, Waynesburg, A. Kay Yost, of Stafford Springs, Conn., and Janet D. Cosgray, of R.D. 4, Waynesburg; a son, J. David Cosgray, of Waynesburg; five grandchildren, Bret Moore, Natalie Eddy, Kirk Yost, Tracy Yost and Erin Cosgray; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Higgins, of Blacksburg, Va. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Glenn E. Cosgray, whom she married in 1937, on June 15, 1997; two brothers, William Higgins and Paul Higgins. Stella Mae Reynolds
Stella Mae Reynolds, 78, of Trough Route, Moorefield, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va. She was born Sept. 7, 1922, in Old Fields, daughter of the late Walter and Nellie Shears Drake. She is survived by her husband, Randolph "Pete" Reynolds; two sons and spouses, Charles L. and Joan Reynolds, of Morgantown and Charlie and Stacy Reynolds, of Romney; four daughters and spouses, Barbara and Howard Parsons, of Masontown, Iona Barnett, of Morgantown, Kimberly and Steve Barnett, of Westover, and Melissa and Brian Hipp, of Moorefield, Va.; eight grandchildren, Kendra and Robert Casteel, Candace Reynolds, Randy Reynolds, Matthew Reynolds, Matthew Barnett, B.J. Lake and Bryan Barnett; 11 great-grandchildren, Cory Reynolds, Devon Hipp, Ashley and Kayla Casteel, Tiffani, Zachary and Tori Reynolds, Brittany Durham, Amber Dunnigan, and Taylor and Tyler Humpries. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles "Ike" Drake. Robert Lee Eddy
Robert Lee Eddy, 70, of Bethel Church Road, Maidsville, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born Dec. 20, 1930, in Jakes Run, Monongalia County, son of the late Lindsey Ross and Virgie Louise Varner Eddy. He retired from Consolidation Coal Co., Osage No. 3 mine. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a member of UMWA District 31. He was Methodist. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Daisie J. "Jackie" Mayfield Eddy; a daughter, Joyce Sue Eddy, of Maidsville; two sons and a spouse, Paskel L. and Marlene Eddy, and Paskel E. "Dickie" Mayfield, all of Morgantown; a brother, Richard Donald Eddy, of Daybrook; five sisters and spouses, Delia Sue Eddy and Richard E. Tennant, Wanetia Eddy and John Tennant, Regina Eddy and James Eddy, Patricia Eddy and Henry McCoy, all of Fairview, and Anna Eddy Rogers, of Kittanning, Pa.; five grandchildren, Brandon, Lauren, Lindsay, Autumn and Kiley. Anna L. Kennedy
Anna L. Kennedy, 75, of Curtis Avenue, Morgantown, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at home. She was born Sept. 5, 1925, in Morgantown, daughter of Louisa Snodgrass Friend, of Morgantown, and the late Victor C. Friend Sr. She retired from BOPARC in December 2000 after 19 years as the caretaker of the Marilla Recreation Center and was a former glass factory worker. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She is also survived by her husband, Fred Kennedy; a daughter and spouse, Debbie and Bernie Swinney, of Morgantown; a brother, Victor C. Friend Jr., of Masontown; three sisters, Doris Gatian, of Paden City, Janet Parsons, of Pawley's Island, S.C., and Alice Sypolt, of Glenville. Margaret Foltin Toporcer
Margaret Helen Foltin Toporcer, 70, of Vestaburg, Pa., died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 4, 1931, in Vestaburg, Pa., daughter of the late Steve Foltin Sr. and Mary Humenick Foltin. She graduated from East Bethlehem High School in 1949. She worked briefly in the company store in Vestaburg, and was a homemaker. She was an active member of the Parish of St. Oliver Plunkett, where she served in the Ladies of Charity. She was also a member of the Christian Mothers, the Ladies' Guild of the church, and sang in the church choir. She is survived by two daughters and spouse, Mary Ann and Bill Post, and Joann; grandchildren, Amy and Eric, of Morgantown; a sister and spouse, Frances and John Slusarczyk, of Vineland, N.J.; a brother, Steve Foltin; a foster niece, Frances Foltin; and a foster grandnephew, Kurt Stopperich. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Toporcer, on June 7, 1997; and a sister, Mary Ann Impiccini. Lillian B. Loughry
Lillian B. Loughry, 89, of Green Bag Road, formerly of 4-H Camp Road, Morgantown, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at home. She was born April 6, 1912, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Abram and Grace McCray Marsh. She retired from Bowlby's License Service as a title clerk after 30 years of service. She was a life member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary Post 548 and was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Moose. She is survived by a son, Robert "Butch" Loughry, of Morgantown; a daughter, Joan Dalton, of Morgantown; a sister, Betty Price, of New Martinsville; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Loughry, of Florida; a son-in-law, Eugene Wotring, of Morgantown; seven grandchildren, Sharon Wotring, Sandra Wotring, Darrell Dalton, Jonathan Dalton, Bradly Dalton, Marsha Loughry Price and Mark Loughry; eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Loughry; a daughter, Patsy Loughry Wotring; five brothers and a sister. Gertrude B. Shaffer
Gertrude B. Shaffer, 86, of Masontown, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Heartland of Preston County, Kingwood. She was born April 24, 1915, daughter of the late Luther and Mary Jane Greathouse Taylor. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dallas Shaffer; a son and spouse, Herbert and Cathy Shaffer, of Masontown; three daughters and spouses, Margaret and Jake Cress, Lillian and Fred Jenkins, and Doris and James Hovatter, of Arthurdale; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-granchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers; three sisters; two grandsons; and a granddaughter-in-law. William J. Herod
William J. Herod, 81, formerly of Kensington Avenue, Morgantown, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at the Alliance Personal Care Home in Grafton. He was born May 26, 1920, in Morgantown, son of the late O.M. "Mike" and Gussie Herod. He was a member of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union Local 152, and was a member of the Suncrest United Methodist Church, Drummond Chapel, where he served as an usher. He was a member of Union Lodge 4, A.F. & A.M., and was a 50-year Master Mason. He was al so a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Molesworth, England, where he was a tailgunner who completed 35 combat missions over Europe. He is survived by his wife, Louise W. Herod; three daughters and a spouse, Carolyn Angotti, of Morgantown, Julianne Forrelli, of North Andover, Mass., and June and John Statler, of Morgantown; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Bobbie Sue Morrel
Bobbie Sue Morrel, 76, a former resident of Milford, Texas, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 29, 1924, in Milford, daughter of the late William Lamar and Alice Ruth Taylor Morrel. She was employed as a day care teacher. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Hicks, of Morgantown, and a nephew, Peter Hicks, of Rochester, Mich. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in Milford Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Mary Evelyn King
Mary Evelyn King, 91, of St. Leo community, Wadestown, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at MonPointe Continuous Care Center, Morgantown. She was born Nov. 6. 1909, at St. Leo, daughter of the late Henry E. and Genny Thomas Delaney. She was a member of Wadestown United Methodist Church and Golden Glow Rebekah Lodge 299, Wadestown. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, John K. and Joann "Jody" King, and Mack B. King, all of Wadestown; two sisters, Virginia Brewer, of Wadestown, and Ruth Byard, of Metz; eight grandchildren, Dr. Mark R. Allen 'Al' Morris
Allen Terrance "Al" Morris, 50, of Greenwood, S.C., formerly of Morgantown, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at home. He was born March 25, 1951, in South Charleston, son of Edna Cox Morris and the late Wetzel Walter Morris. He was a graduate of South Charleston High School, attended West Virginia University, and Anderson University, in Anderson, Ind. He was owner and operator of Carolina Micro Systems. He had lived in Greenwood since 1991. He is survived by his wife, Martelle Taylor Morris; his mother, of South Charleston; a son, Ian Matthew Morris, of Greenwood; three daughters, Becca Elise Morris, Brielle Martelle Morris and Matea Estelle Morris, all of Greenwood; a sister, Pam M. Helen Harr Tucker
Helen Harr Tucker, 88, a resident of Wishing Well Health Center, Fairmont, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at the facility. She was born July 29, 1913, in Fairmont, daughter of the late Denzil H. and Virginia Helmick Harr. She was a graduate of the-then Fairmont Normal School which later became Fairmont State College. She worked 10 years as a sales clerk at Hartley's Department Store in Fairmont. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son and spouse, Larry L. and Betty Tucker, of Leesburg, Va.; a daughter and spouse, Terry Ann and Andy Petracca, of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Robert Tucker, Mark Tucker, Aleisa Petracca and Brad Petracca; three great-grandchildren, Joseph Tucker, Sarah Tucker and Zachary Tucker; and close family friend, Sandra Haddox, of Fairmont. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Larney L. Tucker, in 1979; a sister, Maxine Fisher; and her stepmother, Agnes Harr. Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 3-9 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday, Aug. 7, with the Rev. Alice Keener officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah Cemetery.

Orville 'Buck' Hamrick
Orville C. "Buck" Hamrick, 85, of Colonial Park Apartments, Morgantown, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born July 17, 1916, in Terra Alta, son of the late Albert Franklin Hamrick and Louella Katherine Fraley Hamrick. He was a retired machine operator from Monongahela Railroad and later worked as a custodian and groundskeeper at Colonial Park Apartments. He was Methodist. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Majorie Delores Robinson Hamrick; two sons and spouses, Orville C. "Don" and Judy Hamrick, of Statesville, N.C., and Ronald and Becky Hamrick, of Westover; a daughter, Delores Jeanne Farias, of Miami; a brother, Harold Hamrick, of Point Marion, Pa.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Burkhead, Julie Hamrick, Ed Farias, Heather Hamrick and Jay Hamrick; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan Burkhead and Joshua Burkhead. The body will be cremated. A memorial service will follow at a later date. Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Walter H. 'Red' Shannon
Walter H. "Red" Shannon, 84, of Maple Leaf Lane, Morgantown, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born May 17, 1917, in Tunnelton, son of the late Walter C. and Lettie Cool Shannon. In 1983, he retired as a supervisor at the J.W. Ruby Farms and later owned Shannon Sunoco in Rock Forge. He enjoy carpentry and woodworking and was an avid Pirates and Steelers fan. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Delores Simpson Shannon; two sons and spouses, Larry D. and Arline Shannon, and Ronald H. and Marcia Shannon, all of Morgantown; two daughters and spouses, Carolyn and Karl Myers, of Parsons, and Helen and Charles Phillips, of Morgantown; two sisters, Ethel Stevens, of Parsons, and Ruth McGee, of Tunnelton; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Shannon and William Shannon; and a grandchild, Rick Phillips. Friends may call at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, with Pastor Al Crosten officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Tunnelton.
