Lorene Cooley Hixenbaugh
Lorene R. Cooley Hixenbaugh, 67, of Morgantown, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Monongalia General Hospital, after an extended illness. She was born Aug. 20, 1932, in Star City, daughter of the late Everett M. and Muriel V. Watson Cooley. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Madigan Avenue Church of Christ, in Morgantown. She is survived by three sons and spouses, Joseph C. 'Chuck' and Pam Hixenbaugh II, of Burton, Leslie M. and Sharon Hixenbaugh, of Aliquippa, Pa., and Frederick C. Hixenbaugh, of Monaca, Pa.; two daughters, Marsha A. Wethington, of Fort Worth, Texas, Muriel E. Hixenbaugh, of Morgantown; four brothers and spouses, Everett M. Cooley, Jr., of Cheyenne, Wyo., Wilbert H. 'Webb' and June Cooley, of Morgantown, Kenneth C. and Ann Cooley, of Fontana, Calif., and Norman R. Cooley and Barbara McKenzie, of Arnold, Md.; two sisters and spouses, Erma J. and Paul Brewer, of Fontana, Calif., and Velma J. Covert, of Las Vegas, Nev.; 13 grandchildren, Samuel and Paula Wethington, Brock, Melissa, Scott, Emilee, Andrew, Natalee, Jennifer, Ben, Megan, Maria and Nicole Hix enbaugh. Thorus W. Hawkins
Thorus W. Hawkins, 73, Fairmont, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Hospital in Clarksburg. He was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Marion County, son of the late Holbert Wesley and Mabel Satterfield Hawkins. He retired as a field supervisor for J.O. Livley Construction Co. of Beckley. He supervised the building of coal tipples and the installation of mining belts for mines in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland. After his retirement, he was the owner and operator of a tractor-trailer and did cross-country hauling for another four years. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion Post in Charleston. He was a Methodist. He also enjoyed working on motors. He is survived by his wife Alice Resecker Hawkins; four sons, Stanley Stine, of Houston, Dewayne Stine, of Fairmont, Brian Stine, of Fairmont, and Michael Hawkins of Massillon, Ohio; a daughter, Lisa Sims, of Charlotte, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Kerri Hawkins, Alisson Stine, Michael Hawkins, Kaylyn Stine, J.C. Carpenter, Stormie Stine, Bradley Sims, Jonie Ann Sims, Ashleigh Knox and Machaela Hill. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Lambert Hawkins; two sons, David Allen Hawkins and John Stine; a daughter, Valerie Hawkins; and three sisters, Janessie Hawkins, Wilma Stutler and Retha Graham. Rawna Angus Bosley
Rawna Angus Bosley, 52, of Durbin, formerly of Point Marion, Pa., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Davis Memorial Hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1946, in Uniontown, Pa., daughter of John Angus, of Point Marion, and the late Dorothy Angus. She was a 1964 graduate of Albert Gallatin High School, was an LPN for 35 years, worked at Marlinton Hospital for the past 16 years, was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, Bartow, and enjoyed attending her children's sporting events, crafts and her work in nursing. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, John Bosley; five sons and spouses, Larry and Pam Bosley, Shawn and Carolyn Bosley, Evan Bosley, Jon Michael Bosley and Adam Bosley; a daughter, Megan Bosley; three grandchildren, Logan, Amber and Lindsey; a sister and spouse, Paula and Dave Sweeder, of Lake Lynn, Pa.; a brother, Jan Angus, of Point Marion; two nieces, Kelley Dlugos, of Morgantown, and Jill Sweeder, of Connellsville, Pa. A Mass of Christian burial and memorial service will be at St. Marks Catholic Church at a later date. The Louis E. Rudolph Funeral Home, Point Marion, is in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Nicholson
Herbert Nicholson, 86, of Kingwood, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at home. He was born March 23, 1913, in Masontown, son of the late Lucian and Louise Murray Nicholson. He was a coal miner and a block and brick mason and he sold mobile homes. He was a member of the Manown Church. He is survived by his second wife, Leona Uphold Nicholson; a daughter, Helen Jane Chenoweth, of Morgantown; a sister, Lorza Groves, of Masontown; a stepson, Robert Miller, of Kingwood; a stepdaughter, Susan Donell, of Ravenna, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Blanche Simms Nicholson; a son, Harold J. Nicholson; four brothers, Robert Nicholson, Glenn Nicholson, Abe Nicholson and Lester Nicholson; and five sisters, Arie Nuce, Jessie Nuce, Gertrude Garletts, Hazel Ayersman and Mabel Methney. Friends may call at Browning Funeral Home in Kingwood from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and at Nicholson Chapel Church on Summers School Road, Morgantown, from 1 p.m. Friday until the 11 a.m. service Saturday, Oct. 9, with Pastor Jim Freeland officiating. Catherine Atkinson
Catherine Atkinson, 70, of Van Gilder Avenue, Morgantown, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born March 23, 1929, in East Liverpool, Ohio, daughter of the late Harold and Lottie Applegate Cronin. She was a member of the Light of Life World Outreach Center in Fairmont, where she worked in the nursery for several years. She had worked at Taylor, Smith and Taylor Pottery in Chester for many years. She is survived by a son and spouse, David and Sharon Clark, of Rock Springs, Wyo.; a daughter, Cathy Jo Illig, of Morgantown, with whom she made her home, along with her grandchildren, David Michael Shaver and Jonna Lynn Illig; two brothers, Hunter Cronin, of Summerville, N.C., and Harold Cronin Jr., of Weirton; a sister, Florence Haney, of Newell; three additional grandchildren and spouses, Roger and Jodie Clark, Kevin and April Clark, and Sandra Kay and Sam Avery; and four great-grandchildren; and wa s like a second mother to Carol and Bill Pell, and grandmother to Chris and Staci Pell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Newton Atkinson; four brothers and two sisters. Mary V. Raymond
Mary V. Raymond, 80, of Woodland Terrace, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at MonPointe Continuing Care Nursing Facility. She was born Jan. 7, 1919, Over Cheat, daughter of the late Elza and Blanche Walls Uphold. She is survived by seven daughters, Mary Nolf, of Brookhaven, Martha Raymond, of Stewartstown Road, Alicia Clemsic, of Everlasting Lane, Helen Duley, of Fairchance, Pa., Kay Bean, of Granville, Nancy Newman, of Hiller, Pa., and Darlene Raymond, of Westover; five sons, Norval Raymond, of Uniontown, Pa., Clifford Raymond, of Woodland Terrace, Elmer Raymond, of the Grafton Road, Gary Raymond, of Laurel Point, and Douglas Raymond, of Stewartstown Road; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Raymond, in 1972; a son, Paul Raymond; a daughter, Cheryl Raymond; a granddaughter, Jennifer Raymond; a brother, Russell Uphold; and a grandson, Samuel James Newman IV. Frank J. Lester
Frank J. Lester Jr., 72, of Elkins, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was born April 6, 1927, in Morgantown, son of the late Frank J. Sr. and Catherine Fitzpatrick Lester. He was a graduate of St. Francis High School and attended West Virginia University. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was employed as an investigator for Equifax for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Elkins Council of the Knights of Columbus and the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Peace in Clarksburg. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the B.P.O.E. and a past instructor for the Literacy Program. He was a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church since 1955. He is survived by his wife, Donna Butcher Lester; two sons and spouses, David P. and Ann Lester, of Fairmont, and Daniel F. and Rebecca Lester, of Belton, Mo.; a daughter and spouse, MaDonna and Carl Basile, of Mount Morris, Pa.; a brother, James F. Lester, of Morgantown; a sister, Sister Karen, Palloti Convent, Laurel, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. John R. Lester. Ida V. Antill
Ida V. Antill, 95, of New Martinsville Health Care Center, formerly of the Knob Fork area near Hundred, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999. She was born July 6, 1904, in Reader. She was a member of Mount Herman Methodist Church, near Knob Fork, and of Cross Roads Home Makers Club. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister, Eva Knisley. Friends may call at Hunt Funeral Home, Hundred, from 4-8 p.m. Friday. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, with the Rev. Richard Colyin officiating. Burial will be in Mount Herman Cemetery.

Dr. Sameh A. Mitry
Word has been received of the death of Dr. Sameh A. Mitry, 53, of McLean, Va., on Friday, Oct. 22, 1999. He earned several degrees from WVU, including a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. He taught in the College of Engineering at WVU and worked at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (now FETC). He is survived by his wife, Mona Mitry; and a son, Andrew Mitry, and daughter, Mariam Mitry, both of McLean. Funeral service was held at St. Mark Orthodox Church, in Virginia.

John Lucas
Word has been received of the death of John Lucas, 79, of Onsted, Mich., on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999. He was born April 6, 1920, in Poland, Pa., son of Steve and Hermina A. Kovac Lucas. He grew up in Sabraton and worked as a coal miner. He retired from Tecumseh Products in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Inez V. Wilson Lucas, and locally by a sister, Orline Hughes, of Mount Morris, Pa., and a brother and spouse, Joe and Dorothy Lucas, of Morgantown. Service at Dunn Chapel, Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home, Onsted, was Saturday, Oct. 30.

Joseph Edward Arnett
Joseph Edward Arnett, 98, of Route 1, Rivesville, died early Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999. He was born April 18, 1901, in Monongah, son of the late Frank and Lillie Jane Koon Arnett. He was a member of Rivesville United Methodist Church, owned and operated Arnett Poultry Farm for 35 years, and was a past member of Farm Bureau Association, Cattlemen's Association and Paw Paw Fair Association. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Amy Marie Grogg Arnett, of Rivesville; three daughters and spouses, Shirley Saffle, of Canton, Ohio, JoAnn and Warren Corley, of Grant Town, and Eleanor and Richard Toothman, of Fairmont; a brother, Frank Arnett, of Rivesville; eight grandchildren, Larry Corley, Joyce Corley, Brian Corley, Robert Saffle Jr., Sharon Cottrell, Sharlene Dennisoff, Joan Grubler and Rick Toothman; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Edward Arnett Jr., and a sister, Nellie Arnett. Freda Virginia Hunt
Freda Virginia Hunt, 95, of Burton, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at WVU Hospitals, Morgantown. She was born Sept. 17, 1904, in Hundred, daughter of the late Lewis and Cora Hamilton. She was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church, Burton, where she taught Sunday school and was the church organist into her 90s. She was a member of the first graduating class of Hundred High School in 1923, attended Fairmont Normal School in the 1920s and graduated from Fairmont State College in 1972. She taught in Wetzel and Monongalia county schools. She was a Democrat, a Wetzel County committeewoman and was elected to the Silver Haired Legislature in the W.Va. Federation of Democratic Women's Hall o f Fame. She was very active in the town of Hundred, which gave her an award for lifetime public service in 1992. She was a member of the Burton Homemakers, known as the Burton CEOS, and the Farm Women's Club. She traveled to Ireland and Africa for intern ational Farm Women's Club meetings. She is survived by two children and spouses, Donald and Jane Duncan, of Abilene, Texas, and Glen L. and B.J. Hunt, of Siler City, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Garold Hunt; and a son, George R. Hunt. Betty L. Lee
Word has been received of the death of Betty L. Lee, 71, of Augusta, on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Winchester Medical Center. She was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Bruceton Mills, daughter of Lova Michael McNair, of Arthurdale, and the late Harry I. McNair. She retired in 1992 from the West Virginia School of the Deaf and Blind in Romney after 16 years. She graduated from Arthurdale High School and was a member of the Delray Christian Church. She is also survived by her husband, Arlie W. Lee, whom she married Dec. 11, 1976; a daughter, Linda Ault, of Akron, Ohio; two brothers, Donald McNair, of Dearborn, Mich., and Eugene McNair, of Barberton, Ohio; two sisters, Eloise McNair, of Arthurdale, and Carol Hood, of Charlottesville, Va.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vivien Wolfe. Service was Saturday, Oct. 2. Burial was in Green Lane Cemetery, Delray. Alberta Dorfner
Alberta Dorfner, 76, of Virginia Avenue, Fairmont, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Wishing Well Health Center. She was born May 8, 1923, in Pittsburgh, daughter of the late Stanley and Catherine Lang Schroepfer. She was a beautician in the Pittsburgh area, a former member of the St. Basil Catholic Church, Pittsburgh, and a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Parish, Fairmont. She is survived by her husband, George Dorfner; two sons and spouses, Gregg and Pattie Dorfner, of Fairmont, and David and Connie Dorfner, of Elkins; two sisters, Rose Marie Szfranski and Bernelda Schroepfer; and two grandchildren, Joshua Dorfner and Eric Dorfner. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Baier, Gurtrude Berdar and Eleanor Firewicz; and two brothers, Emil Schroepfer and Edward Schroepfer. Helen L. Brandimarte
Helen Louise Brandimarte, 91, of Otlahurst Drive, Fairmont, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born Jan. 5, 1908, in New Salem, Pa., daughter of the late George and Isabelle Henasiko. She and her husband owned Avenue Market in Fairmont, and she was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Watson. She is survived by nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dominic 'Dee' Brandimarte; and two sisters, Elizabeth Butcher and Anna Besse. Ruth Dale S. Efaw
Ruth Dale Shuman Efaw, 83, of Brush Run, Mannington, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 11, 1916, in Mannington, daughter of the late William Trevey and Onie Roupe Shuman. She was a member of the Bee Gum United Methodist Church and attended the East High United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Augusta Chapter No. 6 and was a former member of the Columbia Rebekah Lodge No. 43 and the Bee Gum Homemakers. She was active in 4-H clubs in the 1950s and enjoyed quilting, crafts and gardening. She is survived by a son and spouse, Wayne and Mary Efaw, of Mannington; two daughters and spouses, Nadine and Larry Carpenter and Ethel and James Snider, all of Lumberport; a sister, Madeline Hayes, of Mannington; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchi ldren and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Glenn Efaw, on Feb. 17, 1976; two sisters, Josephine Swiger and Phyllis Taylor; a grandchild, James Cass Snider; and a great-grandchild, Joshua Snider. Galen Sheets Myers
Galen Sheets Myers, 86, of Grand Street, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born May 24, 1913, in Mount Pleasant, Pa., son of the late William A. and Sarah Sheets Myers. He was an Ohio County agriculture agent in Wheeling for 15 years. He worked at the WVU Cooperative Extension Service state office in Morgantown for 21 years. He was a graduate of the WVU College of Agriculture and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Morgantown and AF&AM Ohio Lodge 1, Wheeling. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie Fischer Myers; two sons, Dr. David Richard Myers, of Augusta, Ga., and Dr. Robert Fischer Myers, of East Lyme, Conn.; a sister, Eurith Myers, of Greensburg, Pa., and three grandchildren, Dr. Deborah Myers, Elizabeth Myers and Megan Myers. Edward J. Prudnick
Edward J. Prudnick, 72, of Morgantown, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at home. He was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Star City, a son of the late Paul Sr. and Anna M. Tinskey Prudnick. He retired from the Davis Lynch Glass Factory in 1989 after 42 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Carol Gamble Prudnick; a son and spouse, James and Karen Price, of Vienna, Va.; two daughters and spouses, Sherry and Brian Fox, and Paula and Rob Lang, all of Morgantown; three brothers and spouses, Paul Jr. and Giovanna Prudnick, of Star City, Raymond and Mary Lou Prudnick, of Fairmont, and Ralph and Patricia Prudnick, of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren, Amanda, Tracey and Greg Price, Kelsey Fox, and Tara Lang; 31 nieces and nephews; and 32 great nieces and n ephews. Guy J. 'Blackie' Pitch Jr., 71, of Grafton Road, Route 1, Independence, died Sunday, Oct, 3, 1999, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born Jan. 4, 1928, in Morgantown, son of the late Guy Sr. and Oleta Evans Pitch. He retired as a maintenance supervisor from Grafton City Hospital. He was a member of the Homesteaders Gospel Group and the South Point Community Association. He was Methodist. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Dell Austin Pitch; two brothers and a spouse, Paul and Erma Pitch, of California, and Art Pitch, of Oregon; and seven sisters, Antoinette, Virginia, Sarah and Nancy, all of Pennsylvania, Kay, of Texas, Edith, of Ohio, and Marge, of Morgantown. Ruth Elaine Haynes, 72, of Asheville, N.C., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at St. Joseph Hospital, Asheville, after a long illness. She was born Dec. 13, 1926, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Elfa Otto and Murtle A. Kershner Workman. She retired in 1987 from Marland Heights School as a teacher's aide and food server. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in New Cumberland, New Cumberland Rebekah Lodge and Four Squares Dance Club. She was a Den Mother for Pack 34 for 10 years. She is survived by her husband, Charles Robert Haynes, whom she married June 20, 1948; four sons, Kevin Haynes and Gary Haynes, both of Asheville, Mark Haynes, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Greg Haynes, of Weirton; three daughters and spouses, Robin and John Papach Jr., of Enon Valley, Pa., Debra and Mark Donahue, of Asheville, and Shelly and William Steinman Jr., of Colliers; four sisters, Louise Smith and Barbara Ayers, both of Morgantown, Betty Malcolm, of Jacksonville, and Sarah White, of Elkins; 10 gr andchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Scott Haynes, in 1965, and two brothers, Paul Workman and Harry Workman. Friends may call at Turley Funeral Home, 109 N. Chester St., New Cumberland, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Service at Trinity United Methodist Church will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, with the Rev. Billy Ray Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in New Cumberland Cemetery. Donations: Trinity United Methodist Church.
