Mary L. Dupuis Stotler, 82, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, January 19, 2000 at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs. Born in White Cloud, KS, she was the daughter of the late Charles Dupuis and Isabelle Atkinson Dupuis. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Berkeley Springs. She was a retired licensed practical nurse from Mercy Hospital, Baltimore. Surviving are her husband, Vernon L. Stotler; four daughters, Annabelle Sizemore and Veronica Johansen, both of Pasadena, MD and Judith DeMay and Mary Sue Hudock, both of Glen Burnie, MD; one sister, Rose George of Hagerstown; one brother, Charles Dupuis of Augusta, GA; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Dupuis. A vigil was celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 21 at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 South Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. John S. Ledford officiating. Interment was in the Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Naomi B. Crone
1933-2000
Naomi Blanche Wilt Crone, 66, of Stephenson, VA, died Sunday, January 23, 2000 at her residence. She was born on June 7, 1933 in Paw Paw, WV, a daughter of the late Henry S. and Linnie Mae Stull Wilt. She was retired as a seamstress from Leggett Department Store. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. She married Ashby Lester Crone on July 6, 1974. Surviving with her husband are four daughters, Sarah Burleson of Cross Junction, VA, Diana J. Moreland of Martinsburg, WV, Donna I. Newland and Kandy S. Crone, both of Martinsville, WV; four sons, James E. Parrill of Martinsburg, David L. Parrill of Hedgesville, WV, Michael Parrill of Winchester, VA and David K. Crone of Inwood, WV; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Huldah M. Chestnut of Columbus, OH, Aleatha A. Strait of McConnellsburg, PA and Ann Lee Meller of Fort Littleton, PA; and four brothers, Clifford M. Wilt of New Oxford, PA, Joel Wilt of McConnellsburg, PA and Carol J. Wilt and N. Edward Wilt, both of Gettysburg, PA. One daughter, Nina I. Parrill, preceded her in death. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, January 26, at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints with Bishop David Quarnberg officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, Paw Paw. Omps Funeral Home, 1600 Amherst Street, Winchester, is in charge of arrangements. Effie M. Socks

Effie Mae Socks, 86, of Hagerstown, MD, died Thursday, January 20, 2000 at Washington County Hospital. Born May 30, 1913 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late David Albert and Lydia Grace Curfman Gossard. She retired from the Washington County Department of Social Services. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, and was a Sunday school teacher. She was a former Girl Scout leader. She is survived by seven daughters, Nancy Jean Langenstein of Summerville, SC, Connie Perry of Berkeley Springs, WV, Clara Ann Buchanan of Greencastle, PA, Shirley Stephens and Sharon Schrock, both of Hagerstown, Glenda McLucas of Myersville, MD and Alice Gettel of Falling Waters, WV; three sons, Robert Socks and David Socks, both of Hagerstown, and Ronald Socks of Clear Spring, MD; three sisters, Edith Gaylor, Mary Ruth Craig and Freda Wempe, all of Hagerstown; two brothers, Charles Gossard of Hagerstown and Evers Gossard of Salisbury, MD; 30 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Bowman, Alice Lumm and Nancy Slifer; and four brothers, Joseph Gossard, Albert Gossard, Robert Gossard and William Gossard. Services were held Monday, January 24, at 9:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton officiated. Burial was in Rest Haven Cemetery. Juanita J. Starner
1932-2000
Juanita Jewell Starner, 67, of Berkeley Springs died Friday, January 21, 2000 at her residence while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle. Born December 21, 1932 in Rose Hill, Va, she was the daughter of the late William Edgar and Emma Houndshell Moore. She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. She was formerly employed at Pleasant Living Nursing Home in Edgewater, MD from 1980-1985 and in food service for the Anne Arundel Board of Education from 1986-1989. She is survived by her former husband Richard LeRoy Starner, Sr.; four daughters, Carol Peek and Patricia Smith both of Glen Burnie, MD, Bonnie Starner of Millersville, MD and Rose Mary Starner of Odenton, MD; two sons, LeRoy Starner and Darryl Starner both of Edgewater; one sister, Connie Elswick of Berkeley Springs; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Levi, Emmett and John Moore. Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, January 26 at 2 p.m, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs with the Rev Donald Smith officiating. Interment private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Elmer G. Bowman

Elmer Grant Bowman, 78, of Warfordsburg, PA, died Thursday, January 20, 2000 at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, MD. Born June 30, 1926, in Hancock, MD, he was the son of the late Earl Dewey and Annie Elizabeth Exline Bowman. He was a farmer; a construction worker; and had been employed by Marvania Orchards in Hancock. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He was a Protestant. He is survived by his wife, A. Jane Miller Bowman whom he married December 27, 1952; four daughters, Debra Bollman and Tina Clippinger of Warfordsburg, Janet Mills of Clearville, PA and Jayne Schultz of Berkeley Springs, WV; five sons, Melvin Bowman of Mercersburg, PA, Elmer G. Bowman Jr. of Warfordsburg, Gary Bowman of Fort Louden, PA and Bobby Bowman and John Bowman of Needmore, PA; three sisters, Ruth Young of Martinsburg, WV and Ethel Barnhart and Anna Wade of Williamsport, MD; one brother, Earl Kenny Bowman of Hancock; 29 grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter. Services were held Saturday, January 22 at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main Street in Hancock. The Rev. Ralph Kunkle officiated. Burial was in Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Cemetery on Thompson Road in Needmore, with military honors by Tri-State Honor Guard.

Samuel W. Buskirk
1945-2000
Samuel W. Buskirk, 54, of Hancock, MD, died Sunday, January 23, 2000 at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, MD. Born July 5, 1945, in Lonaconing, MD, he was the son of the late Samuel Harold and Mary Ellen Legeer Buskirk. He was a 1963 graduate of Hancock High School. He was employed with Fleetwood Industries, Hancock. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1970, leaving with the rank of sergeant. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Warfordsburg, PA. He was a member of Webster B. Harrison Post 26 American Legion, Hancock. He is survived by his wife, Hilda L. Roman Buskirk; two sons, Scott Wayne Buskirk of Warfordsburg and T.J. Buskirk of Hancock; one sister, Janice L. Coffman of Berkeley Springs; one half-brother, Harold Buskirk of Midland, MD; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 25 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Warfordsburg. The Revs. Denver A. Plessinger and Robert D. Smith Sr. officiated. Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery with military honors being conducted by Tri-State Honor Guard. Arrangements were by the Grove Funeral home, 141 W. Main Street, Hancock. Brent H. Parker

Brent Henry Parker, 41, of Paw Paw, died Sunday, January 16, 2000 at the Augusta Correctional Center near Craigsville, VA. He was born August 3, 1958 at Berkeley Springs. He was a son of Bonnie Kesecker Parker of Paw Paw, and the late William Foster Parker. He had been a carpenter. He is survived by one daughter, Heather Brown of Paw Paw and one granddaughter. Graveside services were held Friday, January 21, at 11 a.m. at the Sulphur Springs Cemetery near Paw Paw, with Pastor Earl Travis officiating. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Fraley-Kimble Funeral Home in Paw Paw.

Jaunita F. Bishop
1936-2000
Jaunita F. Bishop, 63, of Phoenix, AZ, died Saturday, January 15, 2000 at Casa Grande, AZ. Born February 16, 1936, in Taylor, NE, she was the daughter of Mildred Carr of Torrington, WY and the late Walter Todd. She was a Mormon. She was active in both the Martinsburg, WV and Hagerstown, MD Alcoholics Anonymous chapters. She is survived by three daughters, Linda Barnes of Hedgesville, WV and Jolene Guessford and Caroline Horst, both of Hagerstown; one son, Donald William Reigh of Hagerstown; five sisters, Barbara Fraze of Chandler, AZ, Marge Kaufman of Lymon, NE, Joyce Graziano of Commerce City, CO, Patsy Knighton of Reading, CA and Doris Todd of Lander, WY; three brothers, William Todd of Brighton, CO, George Todd of Belen, NM and Bernard Carr of Yoder, WY; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Carolyn Philips; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter. A private memorial service will be held today, Wednesday, January 26 at 149 King Street in Hagerstown. Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Marion T. Scardino
1910-2000
Marion T. Scardino, 89, of Houston, TX, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000 at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston. Born April 25, 1910 in Houston, he was the son of the late Andrew and Carmella Lavitte Scardino. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Houston. He graduated from San Jacinto High School in Houston. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was part owner and general manager of the Houston Truck Factory for more than 50 years. Surviving are one son, John W. Scardino of Pearland, TX; one daughter, Sharon Rankin of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Nina Corolla of Dallas, TX and Lucille Delahoussaye of Houston; nine grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Belle Roppolo Scardino; one daughter, Marion Belle Scardino; one sister, Annie Corollo; and four brothers, John L. Scardino, Andrew M. Scardino, Peter Scardino and Victor Scardino. The Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 19, at the family chapel of Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale, Houston. The funeral liturgy was offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 20 at St. Helen Catholic Church, Pearland, TX. Interment was in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. John T. Helsley

John Thomas Helsley, 65, of Hancock, MD, died Sunday, January 23, 2000 at his home. Born July 25, 1934, in Martinsburg, WV, he was the son of the late George W. and Rachael Harr Helsley. He was employed by Hancock Truck Stop in Hancock. He previously was employed as production manager with theaters in Washington, DC. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a Protestant. Services will be held today, Wednesday, January 26, at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main Street, Hancock. Evangelist Timothy Swindell, Sr. will officiate. Carolyn D. Yost
1921-2000
Carolyn D. Yost, 78, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, January 31, 2000 at Winchester, VA Medical Center. Born in Morgan County, April 27, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Melvin R. Davison and Maude Kerns Davison. She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs. She was past president of the Fireman's Ladies Auxiliary, Berkeley Springs and the American Legion Auxiliary Post #60. She is survived by one daughter, Patricia G. Socks of Greencastle, PA; three sons, Taylor K. Yost and James M. Yost, both of Berkeley Springs and Richard A. Yost of Gerrardstown; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Preston G. Yost, in 1991; two sisters, Betty McLaughlin and Katherine Householder, and one brother, Ralph Davison. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, February 2 at 2 p.m. at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Kelly Scott officiating. Audrey Pauline Egnor, 87, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, January 25, 2000 at City Hospital, Martinsburg. She was born July 20, 1912 in Hallwood, VA, the daughter of the late Fred I. and Delta Blanche Hitchens Parsons. She was a homemaker. She was of the Methodist faith. She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Elaine Turner of Berkeley Springs and Helen Suzanne Leonard of Purcellville, VA; one son, Leonard Earl "Buddy" Egnor of Wilmington, DE; one sister, Helen Parsons Waller of Newport News, VA; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl S. Egnor; one sister, Hazel Mary Buchanan; three grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Theresa Gladden Queen, 46, of Martinsburg, died Monday, January 24, 2000 at City Hospital, Martinsburg. Born March 20, 1953, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of Veronica Helpert Gladden of Inwood and the late William B. Gladden. She was a Catholic. In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son, David Queen II of Martinsburg; one daughter, Pamela McDonald of Martinsburg; seven brothers, Cecil Gladden of Union Town, PA, Bill Gladden Jr., Paul Gladden and Timmy Gladden, all of Inwood, Matthew Gladden of Norfolk, VA, Steve Gladden of Williamsburg, VA, and David Gladden of Gerrardstown; three sisters, Sandra Hopwood of Berkeley Springs, Cindy O'Connor of Winchester, VA and Diane Bohrer of Gerrardstown; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Susan Gladden. Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 29, at the Rosedale Funeral Chapel. Interment was in the Rosedale Cemetery.

Barbara Faye Walker, 72, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, January 28, 2000 at the Winchester, VA Medical Center. Born February 14, 1927, in Lynchburg, VA, she was the daughter of the late William Matroni and Ellen L. Kirby Matroni. She was a retired secretary with NASA. She was of the Catholic faith. She is survived by one sister, Phyllis Proffitt of Lynchburg. Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Charlotte Evangeline Rankin, 76, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, January 27, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs. She was born January 21, 1924 in Alexandria, VA, the daughter of the late James C. and Minnie Dale Carrico Bradfield. She was a graduate of George Washington High School Class of 1941. She retired from Alexandria Hospital as an EEG Technician. She was a member of the Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church. She served Second Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA as a Sunday School teacher, a choir member and a Bible School teacher. She was a member of the Northern Virginia Business Women's Association and the Order of the Eastern Star in Annandale, VA. She is survived by her husband, Robert Elwood Rankin; one daughter, Carol June Karberg of St. Louis, MO; two sons, Robert Eugene Rankin of Louisville, KY and Philip Glenn Rankin of Denver, CO; two sisters, Lucy Louise Rivenburg of Orange Co., VA and June Lee Mason of Virginia Beach, VA; one brother, Melvin C. Bradfield of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren; one great grandson and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Grace Temple Toon and one brother, James Francis Bradfield. Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Robert Osborne officiated. Private interment was in Arlington National Cemetery. Erna M. Decker

Erna May Hayes Decker, 70, of Hedgesville, died Friday, January 28, 2000 at the Winchester, VA Medical Center. She was born October 6, 1929, the daughter of the late Leslie Omar Hayes and Beatrice Brown Hayes. She was previously employed with Admiral Radio Corp., working with military equipment; and was an inspector for a Manhattan shirt factory. She was a member of Michael's United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, James L. Decker; one daughter, Sharon Sue Forman, of Forestville, MD; one son, Kevin Wayne Decker of Wichita, KS; three sisters, Cleta Schneider of Lake Guymar, NY, Betty Schmidt of Holmes, NY and Arlene Anglemyer of Middletown, NY; one brother, Kenneth Hayes of Middletown; many grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Hayes. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1, at 11 a.m. at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 South Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Wayne Frum officiated. Interment was in Mahne's Church Cemetery, Berkeley Springs. Dale C. Hedrick, Jr.
1950-2000
Dale Clayton Hedrick, Jr., 49, of Annandale, VA, died Saturday, January 29, 2000 at his home. Born December 13, 1950 in Ft. Knox, KY, he was the son of Irene Garner Hedrick of Berkeley Springs, and the late Dale Clayton Hedrick. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a 1968 graduate of Edison High School in Alexandria, VA and attended the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. He was a systems analyst in the computer field who worked as a freelance contractor. In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife of 10 years, Nenita Damasco Bernardo Hedrick of Annandale; one brother, Richard Harold Hedrick of Knightdale, NC; maternal grandmother, Edith "Mickey" Lutzenhiser of Berkeley Springs; stepfather, Charles E. Magoon of Berkeley Springs; one niece; one nephew; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 4 at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Robert S. Osborne officiating. Interment will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, February 3 at the funeral home, which will be open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Thursday.

Lynwood H. Newbraugh
1917-2000
Lynwood H. Newbraugh, 82, of Winchester, VA, died January 25, 2000 at the Winchester Medical Center. He was born December 2, 1917 in Berkeley Springs, the son of Griffith and Lillie Newbraugh. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to joining the U.S. Army where he was a private first class from 1945-1946. He worked as a carder at the Virginia Woolen Mill; in supplies at the Winchester Memorial Hospital until his retirement in 1979; and later as an assistant store room clerk at Miller Hardware. He was a member of Market Street United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Rouss Fire Company, and was a past president and former member of the Round Hill Ruritan Club. His first wife, Thelma N. Dick Newbraugh, preceded him in death in 1971. He married his second wife, Betty Young Newbraugh, on September 15, 1973. Surviving with his wife of Winchester, are two sons, Carroll L. Newbraugh of Winchester and Kenneth L. Newbraugh of Cross Junction, VA; one sister, Olive Newbraugh of Martinsburg; one brother, Hugh Newbraugh; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel McCormick and Beulah Stotler; and three brothers, Foster Newbraugh, Otho Newbraugh and Carl Newbraugh. A funeral service was held on Saturday, January 29, at the Jones Funeral Home, 228 South Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester, at 11 a.m. with Dr. William Wade and Dr. Robert M. Throckmorton officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Hebron Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Winchester Area Chapter, P.O. Box 3271, Winchester, VA 22604.
