Leora C. Fearnow
Leora C. Fearnow of Lancaster, PA, died Sunday, February 6, 2000 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Elkins, she was the daughter of the late Edgar H. and Effie O. Renick Coberly. She lived the majority of her life in Lancaster County. She attended Potomac State College and West Virginia University. She was a legal secretary for Rhorer-Honaman Newcomer and Musser from 1957 to 1959, following which she became a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Millersville, PA. She was an active member in the Lancaster Engineering Scholarship Association, the Joyful Hearts Association and a volunteer at Easter Seals. She is survived by her husband, Edgar C. Fearnow; one son, Dr. Edgar C. Fearnow III of Glenmore, PA; one daughter, Elizabeth Fearnow Comollo; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 121 North George Street, Millersville, today, Wednesday, February 9, at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. Debra Stanton officiating. Interment private at the convenience of the family. Beatrice C. Rankin

Beatrice Catherine "Dottie" Sheppard Rankin, 84, of Hedgesville, died Thursday, February 3, 2000 at Winchester, VA Medical Center. She was known in Berkeley and Morgan counties as "Muzzy" and "Granny." Born August 9, 1915, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Sheppard and Flora Johnson Sheppard. She attended Snyders Bible Church. She attended schools in Morgan County. She is survived by five daughters, Ruby P. Mathews of Fredericks-burg, VA, Dolly Rudy of Hedgesville, Rosalie Files of Berkeley Springs, Judy Hardee of Bunker Hill and Mary Riner of Hedgesville, with whom she resided; three sons, Paul Rankin Sr., Richard Rankin and Roger "Sy" Rankin, all of Hedgesville; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy Huffman and Vietta Weigle, both of Hedgesville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Rankin; and three brothers, Ernest Sheppard, James Sheppard and Morgan Sheppard. Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 6 at Snyders Bible Church with the Rev. Joseph Mercer and the Rev. Kenneth Reed officiating. Interment was in Snyders Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Paul R. Carpenter
Paul Ray Carpenter, 74, of Elkview, died Friday, February 3, 2000 in St. Francis Hospital, Charleston. He was a retired maintenance supervisor from Union Carbide with 35 years service. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a lifelong resident of Kanawha County. He was past master of Masonic Lodge 153, past potentate of Beni Kedem Shrine, past patron of Eastern Star Chapter 45 and a member of Allied Masons Degrees, Red Cross of Constantine and Royal Order of Jesters. He was a frequent visitor to Berkeley Springs and attended numerous meetings of Deford Masonic Lodge #88, participating on several occasions in delivering the ritual of free Masonary. He was a member of the Ridge Hunting Club (Michael Hunting Lodge). Surviving are his wife, Dorothea L. Allen Carpenter; three daughters, Paula Syms of Germantown, MD, Rita Pritt of Beckley and Tina Perkins of Barboursville; one sister, Ruth Frasher of Elkview; six granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 5, at Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview, with the Rev. Kenneth R. Pritt Jr. officiating. Burial was in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney, with Masonic rites. There was a Scottish rite service Friday, February 4 at 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Beni Kedem Temple Children's Hospital Transportation Fund, 100 Quarrier St., Charleston, WV 25301.

Vallie V. Postelle
Vallie Virginia "Aunt Bi" Postelle, 85, of Berkeley Springs, formerly of Paw Paw, died Monday, February 7, 2000 at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs. Born at Woodrow in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Benjamin and Edith May Kave Alderton. She was a member of Enon Primitive Baptist Church at Largent. She was a 1932 graduate of Paw Paw High School. She was a member of Berkeley Chapter #77 Order of the Eastern Star in Berkeley Springs. She and her late husband lived in Panama during the 1940s where he worked on construction at the Panama Canal and she worked as a clerk. She moved to Berkeley Springs 15 years ago. She was an active community volunteer and has been a homemaker in recent years. Surviving are two nieces; and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Postelle; an infant son, Grant Postelle; one sister, Wanda Alderton; and one brother, Thomas B. Alderton, Jr. Private burial in Woodrow Union Cemetery in Paw Paw. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs.

Ruth A. Miller
1941-2000
Ruth Ann Miller, 58, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, February 4, 2000 at her home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle. Born December 25, 1941 in Whitacre, VA, she was the daughter of the late Boyd Raymond and Edna Mae Crouse Waugh. She was of the Pentecostal faith. She attended the Mt. Garfield School and Berkeley Springs High School. She managed the restaurant at the lodge of Cacapon State Park during the late 1970s and early 1980s. She then worked as a cashier at Dugan's Supermarket in Berkeley Springs. She worked as a clerk at the reception desk of Cacapon State Park from the late 1980s until her death. She was a homemaker. She liked bingo and camping. Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Albert William "Blackie" Miller, Sr., at home; one son, Albert William "J.R." Miller, Jr. of Berkeley Springs; two daughters, Teresa Lynn Bulick and Tina Marie Payne, both of Berkeley Springs; six grandchildren, Daniel W. Miller, Jennifer D. Bulick, Scott W. Payne, Maranda M. Miller, Brandi N. Bulick and Jessica M. Payne, all of Berkeley Springs; one great granddaughter; three sisters, Pauline Waugh and Brenda Kay Goodman, both of Berkeley Springs and Hazel Shade of Great Cacapon; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Boyd Wesley Miller and one brother, Avon Richard Waugh. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 8, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Andrew C. Collins, Sr. officiating. Interment was in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Frances V. Hobday

Frances V. Hobday, 91, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, February 7, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs. Born April 16, 1908, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late John Bohrer and Ethel L. Crouse Bohrer. She completed her GED at age 65. She was employed in various occupations in Morgan County. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ellen Goodman of Berkeley Springs, with whom she made her home for 40 years; one son, John Mark Hobday of Morgantown; one sister, Nancy Bowman of St. George, UT; one brother, Paul Bohrer of Colonial Beach, VA; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Hobday, who died in 1938; one daughter, Betty L. Hobday; one son, Donald L. Hobday; three sisters, Beulah Bohrer, Katherine Bohrer and Margaret Gentry; and seven brothers, Harry Bohrer, Herbert Bohrer, James Bohrer, Fred Bohrer, Philip Bohrer, LeeRoy Bohrer and Hugh Bohrer. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 10, at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs with the Bishop Gerald Hendershot officiating. Catherine "Kitty" Steeves Burns, 80, of Quincy Village, PA, formerly of Berkeley Springs, died on Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at her home. Born September 25, 1919 in New York City, NY, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Seymour and Josephine Anna Lazarowicz Steeves. She was a member of Berkeley Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church. She graduated with the Class of 1936 from Plainfield Academy, Plainfield, NJ and graduated from Columbia Junior College in Takoma Park, MD in 1940. She worked for 10 years as a legal secretary with the Bureau of National Affairs and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, both in Washington, DC. She worked as secretary/treasurer of John Nevins Andrews Elementary School, Takoma Park. She retired in 1981 as recorder with Columbia Union College in Takoma Park. She was an accomplished seamstress, braider and quilter. She recently moved from Berkeley Springs to Quincy Village. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, G. Richard Burns, at home; two daughters, Margaret Anne Burns of Loma Linda, CA and Bonnie Burns Wilbur of Burtonsville, MD; three sisters, Grace Grant of Berkeley Springs, Margaret Roy and Alyce Ryals Wilburn, both of Hendersonville, NC; six nieces and two nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one niece and two infant brothers. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Sunday, February 13, at Berkeley Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church, Route 522 South, Berkeley Springs with Rev. Frank Bondurant officiating. Private interment will be in the Duckwall Church Cemetery, Morgan County. Stanley O. Perrine
1911-2000
Stanley O. Perrine, 88, of Mannington, died Friday, February 4, 2000, at Valley View Nursing Facility, Berkeley Springs. He was born on February 23, 1911 in Braxton County (Sutton), the son of the late John S. Perrine and Rose V. Cutlip Perrine. He attended Glenville State Normal School (Glenville State Teachers College) and taught elementary school three years in Braxton County. He joined the WV State Police in 1935 and was among the first Troopers to patrol on motorcycles. He was also among the first group of troopers assigned to the WV Turnpike in 1954 as a sergeant stationed in Beckley. He retired from the State Police in 1960 and began a jewelry and watch repair business in Mannington. He was a Protestant. He was mayor of Mannington during the 1970s, a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #104 in Elkins, a 50 year member of Sutton Masonic Lodge No. 21, A.F.&A.M, an 18° and 50 year member of the Scottish Rite of Clarksburg, and a 32° member of the Scottish Rite of Wheeling. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen McElroy Perrine; three infant brothers; three sisters, Phala White, Louise Doan and Genevieve Pennett. He is survived by two sons, Warren Perrine of Parkersburg and John Perrine of Plano, TX; one daughter, Rose Ann Glover of Berkeley Springs; five grandchildren, Stanley O. Perrine II, David Perrine, Gail Perrine, Matthew Glover and Holly Glover; one great grandchild; several nieces, neph-ews, and cousins. Services were held at Dent Funeral Home in Mannington at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 8 with interment at Braxton County Cemetery, Sutton. Graveside services were conducted by Sutton Masonic Lodge No. 21.

Mary L. Keefer
1929-2000
Mary Louise Keefer, 70, of McConnellsburg, PA, died Friday, February 4, 2000 at Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg. Born August 24, 1929, in Needmore, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ada Sipes Mellott. She worked at Stanley in Chambersburg, PA for three years and retired from Sagner Inc. in McConnellsburg after 20 years of service. She was a member of Sideling Hill Christian Church in Needmore. She was a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary of McConnellsburg. She is survived by her husband, Elmer R. Keefer, whom she married December 6, 1951; and two sisters, Sarah Ruthford and Mildred Kearns, both of Berkeley Springs, WV. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Mellott, Dale Mellot and Verl Mellott. Services were held Monday, February 7 at 2 p.m. at Sipes Funeral Home in Harrisonville, PA. Pastor William Swope officiated. Burial was in Union Cemetery in McConnellsburg.

Howard L. Sample
1916-2000
Howard Leonard Sample, 83, of Berkeley Springs, died on Thursday, February 3, 2000 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA. Born July 11, 1916 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Emma Florence Webb Sample. He was of the Protestant faith. He graduated from high school in Brooklyn and then studied at the Insurance Institute of New York in New York City. He also studied municipal government management and organization at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. He served from 1944-1946 as Technician Fifth Grade with the first Headquarters Persian Gulf Command in Khorramshahr and Teheran in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the American Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired in 1979 after 48 years of service as a supervisor of Group Annuities with the Equitable Life Assurance Society in New York City. He served on the Township Committee of Delaware Township, NJ from 1968-1974 and served two terms as mayor. He was a member of Risinger-Stotler VFW Post #4019 in Berkeley Springs and was the treasurer of Sleepy Creek Forest Association. He moved from Rosemont, NJ to Berkeley Springs in 1981. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Alice Julia Vetter Sample, at home; two sons, Gary O. Sample of Northville, MI and Alan H. Sample of Pipersville, PA; two grandchildren, Gretchen K. Sample of Pipersville and Rachel L. Cox of Westland, MI; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Wenz and Lillian Groll and two brothers, Alfred Sample and Joseph Sample. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, February 7, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Robert S. Osborne officiating. Interment with military graveside honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard was in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Rev. Paul M. Hawkins
1923-2000
The Reverend Paul Minor Hawkins, 76, a retired priest of the Episcopal Church, died Monday, February 21, 2000. Born July 22, 1923, in Snow Hill, MD, he grew up in West Virginia where he attended Berkeley Springs High School and was a member of the Class of 1940. He graduated from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, in 1947 with a bachelor of arts degree. While at Sewanee, he was a member of several national, professional and honorary fraternities including Kappa Alpha order, Blue Key and Omicron Delta Kappa; he was also a member of MENSA for over 30 years. He served with the United States Army. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Scabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL in 1950 and was ordained the same year. He served parishes in Geneva, IL and Jackson, MS. He also served as Director of the Division of Research and Field Study for the National Church Center in New York City from 1960-65. In 1973, he retired from active ministry in the church and began a career in real estate earning his GRI and CRB designations, and becoming broker-manager of a large firm in Geneva. He was President of the Fox Valley Board of Realtors 1982-1983 and served on the board for several years. He retired to Sarasota, FL in 1991. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Rosalie Robinson; three children, Mark Stephen Hawkins of Missoula, MT, Annwn Hawkins Myers of Sewanee and Amy Louis Hawkins of Jamaica Plain, MA; one stepdaughter, Julia Stewart Warren of Joliet, IL; and four grandsons. Funeral services will be held at The Church of the Nativity in Sarasota on March 5. Burial will be on a later date at the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. Marguerite A. Wright
1913-2000
Marguerite Albright Wright, 86, of Keedysville MD, died Sunday, February 20, 2000 at her home. Born August 7, 1913, in Essex Junction, VT, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Austin and Pearl Pamelia Trepanier Albright. Her husband, Rush Lee Wright, Jr., died in 1997. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Boonsboro, MD. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America. She is survived by four daughters, Ann W. Cole of Patterson, Creek, Nancy E. Higgins of Shade Gap, PA, Claire E. Wright of Keedysville and Christina M. Wright of Medford, OR; four sons, Rush L. Wright III of West Virginia, A. Joseph Wright of Accident, MD, Stephen A. Wright of Boonsboro and David C. Wright of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Ann Whedbee of Denver, CO and Emma Wilson of Greenbackville, VA; two brothers, Joseph Albright of Dover, DE and Edward Albright of Atlanta, GA; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters; and two grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be celebrated today, Wednesday, February 23, at 1 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church, with the Rev. George A. Limmer as celebrant. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family. Ronnie William Brown, 35, of Great Cacapon, died Tuesday, February 15, 2000 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg. Born in Morgan County on August 30, 1964 he was the son of Paul William and Patricia Ruth Farris Brown of Great Cacapon. He was a Protestant. He had attended Berkeley Springs High School. He had served in the U.S. Army. He had been employed at the Berkeley Springs Motor Company. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his fiancee, Anita LaRee Day of Great Cacapon; five daughters, Jennifer Nicole Day, Alicia Ann Day and Ivory Morgan Brown of Great Cacapon; Kami Jo Brown and Tabitha Brown, both of Greensboro, NC, one son, David Austin Brown of Great Cacapon; one brother, Roger L. Brown of Great Cacapon; grandmother, Nellie V. Stotler and step-grandfather, Howard E. Stotler. He was preceded in death by one sister, Darla Rae Brown McCarty. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 19, at 2 p.m. at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Jeff Dissmore officiated. Burial with military gravesite rites was in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Great Cacapon.

Clara E. Taylor

Clara Ethel Taylor, 84, of Berkeley Springs (formerly of Duhring) died Saturday, February 19, 2000 at home. Born August 3, 1915 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late James Edward Kade and Hallie Thompson Kade Hedrick. She was a member of the Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs. She was a former member of the Church of Christ in Duhring. Surviving are one daughter, Joyce Pugh of Berkeley Springs; one grandson, Kevin Pugh of Damascus, MD; one granddaughter, Kimberly McCullagh of Damascus; three great-grandsons; one brother, John Kade of Bluefield; two sisters, Eva Riggs and Mary Jones, both of Bluefield; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Edgar Taylor; two sons, George Edgar Taylor, Jr. and James Edward (Eddie) Taylor; four brothers, Ernest, Miles, Dewey and Carl Kade; and one sister, Hazel Miller. Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 22 at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with the minister Tony Reed officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Bluewell. Helen L. Moreland

Helen Lovita Moreland, 76, of Paw Paw, died Monday, February 21, 2000 at the Jeffersonian Manor Nursing Home in Charles Town. Born February 18, 1924 in Bethel, she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Estella Cave Largent. She was employed at the Newton D. Baker in Martinsburg and at Raygold Cabinet Co. in Paw Paw. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Paw Paw and later of Island Hill United Methodist Church, Paw Paw. She is survived by her husband, Gracen C. Moreland, whom she married in July of 1961; and two brothers, Wilson Largent of Horsham, PA and Wayne Largent of Hagerstown, MD. She was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Walls. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, February 23, at 2 p.m. in the McKee Funeral Home Chapel in Augusta, with the Rev. Delbert Poling officiating. Interment will be in Island Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw.

Margaret F. Seckman

Margaret F. Sheppard Seckman, 81, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, February 20, 2000 at City Hospital, Martinsburg. Born December 3, 1918, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late William S. Sheppard and Laura V. Fizer Sheppard. She was a member of Pikeside United Methodist Church where she was a member and past president of the Loyalty Class of the church. Surviving are two sons, Harold B. Sencindiver Jr. and Gary L. Sencindiver, both of Martinsburg; one daughter, Sandra K. Peacher of Charles Town; seven grandchildren, Tammy O'Dell, Gary Sencindiver Jr., Timmy Sencindiver, Angy Chrisman, Todd Sencindiver, Melissa Kriss and Tanya Mason; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elwood W. Seckman; two sisters, Edna Shriver Brotemarkle and Gladys T. Butts; and three brothers, Lester Sheppard, Herbert Sheppard and Charles Sheppard. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, February 23, at the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Daniel Montague officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

Patricia H. Lawson, 65, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, February 21, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs. Born May 22, 1934, in California, PA, she was the daughter of the late William Clair Askins and Agnes Juanita Sloan Askins. She was the president of Sleepy Creek Manufacturing, Berkeley Springs. She was a member of the Berkeley Springs Woman's Club, the board of directors of Potomac Center, Romney, and several state trappers associations. Surviving are her husband, Donald W. Lawson; two daughters, Nancy Jo Lawson of Urbana, MD and Leslei Ann Lawson of Man's Choice, PA; three sisters, Edwjna Thompson of Man's Choice, Mary Jane Rice of Middletown, MD and Agnes Atkins of Leola, PA; six brothers, Pete Askins of Lititz, PA, Ray Askins of Shellsburg, PA, James Askins of Wells Tannery, PA, Don Askins of Boonsboro, MD, Arthur Askins of Silver Spring, MD and Bartley Askins of Annapolis, MD; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 South Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs.

Nylene F. Baumgardner
1942-2000
Nylene Faye Baumgardner, 57, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, February 17, 2000 at her residence. Born November 12, 1942 in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Irvin Stotler and Violet A. McKinney Stotler. She was a member of the Church of Christ Northside. Surviving are two sons, Bradley Baumgardner and Andrew L. Baumgardner, both of Martinsburg; and one half-brother, William H. Smith of Charles Town. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, at the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Dennis Mongan and Rev. Larry Kilmer officiating. Interment was in the Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Great Cacapon.

Brown G. Riggleman
1899-2000
Brown Gap Riggleman, 100, of Green Spring, died Wednesday, February 23, 2000, at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs. Born August 7, 1899, in Moorefield, he was the son of the late Otis and Alice (Wolf) Riggleman. He was affiliated with the Green Spring Assembly of God Church. He was employed in area sawmills and was a minister for the Church of God. He is survived by his second wife, Margaret (Stotler) Kidwell Riggleman of Paw Paw; four sons, Loring (Short) Riggleman and Thomas (Tom) Riggleman, both of Berkeley Springs, Troy Riggleman of Marion, MI and John Mark Riggleman of Ashboro, NC; five daughters, Damie Wratchford of College Park, MD, Bernice Riggleman and Linda Sue Keifer, both of Green Spring, Neva Wagoner of Wilmington, NC, Verna Vorner of Summersville; 32 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dale Lee Barr; two sons, Olin Riggleman and Freeman (Buck) Riggleman; and one daughter, Joanne Monitt. Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 26, at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, with the Rev. Fred F. Parker officiating. Interment was in the New House Cemetery, Rig. Mary Ellen R. Smith
1927-2000
Mary Ellen Rosella Smith, 72, of Warfordsburg, died Friday, February 25, 2000 at Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown. Born August 15, 1927 in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Harry N. and Bessie Middleton Norris. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hancock. She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte Wink of Berkeley Springs, Barbara Mills of Big Pool and Elizabeth Bowers of Warfordsburg; three sons, Andrew N. Smith of Herndon, VA, Joseph L. Smith of Hagerstown and McKinley R. Smith of Spring Hill, FL; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Andrew Smith in 1974 and by seven sisters and seven brothers. Services were held Tuesday, February 29, 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Resley Road in Hancock. The Rev. Timothy Davis officiated. Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery. Walter C. Kemon
Walter Chadwick Kemon, 88, of Falls Church, VA, died on Thursday, February 10, 2000 at Iliff Nursing and Rehab Center. He was the son of the late Ethel Byrd Howell Kemon. He is survived by one son, Donald L. Kemon; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia M. Kemon; and one son, Walter C. Kemon, Jr. Funeral services were held at St. James Catholic Church, Falls Church, on Tuesday, February 15 at 10 a.m. Interment was at Fort Lincoln, Brentwood, MD. Arrangements were by the Murphy Funeral Home of Falls Church.

E. Kathryn Mellow
1904-2000
E. Kathryn Mellow, 95, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, February 23, 2000 at War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs. Born June 2, 1904, in Pensacola, FL, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Robert Slater and Esther K. Homrickhaus Slater. She is survived by one daughter, Rheta R. Kerns of Hedgesville; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Mellow. A memorial service was held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, February 27, at the Calvary Bible Church, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Jim Downey officiating. Nora V. Richardson
1904-2000
Nora Virginia Richardson, 95, of Lancaster, OH, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster. She was a resident of Crestview Manor Nursing Home. Born April 16, 1904, in Rockingham County, VA, she was the daughter of the late George and Daisy Hoover Branum. She was preceded in death by her late husband, the Rev. H.E. Richardson, who was pastor of four churches on the Sleepy Creek Charge. He served the area for more than 50 years of ministry in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was an elementary school teacher in Morgan County and lay speaker and, in retirement, she continued to teach Bible classes until recent years. She is survived by three daughters, Lois Householder of Upper Marlboro, MD, Jean Irvin of Lancaster and Ruth Shingleton of Ravenswood; one stepdaughter, Dorcas Cromwell of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 25, at the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Arlene R. Carr officiating. Interment was in the Rosedale Cemetery.

Lester Largent
Lester Largent, Waco, TX, died Saturday, January 29, 2000. He was the son of Millard Largent and Bertha Wisner Largent. He was an active member of the Shrine Club and a golfer. He left Morgan County as a teenager to join the Army. He was sent to the Canal Zone in Panama where he was a police officer for many years before becoming assistant warden in the penitentiary there. Upon retirement from the Canal Zone he returned to Texas where he worked as a foreman in a limestone plant near Whitney, TX. After his retirement from the plant he moved to West, TX and lived there for several years. He is survived by one daughter, Nancy Largent-Wilson of Vancouver, Canada; two brothers, Otis Largent of Morgan County and Lenwood Largent of Hyndman, PA; two sisters, Colleen Slider of Cumberland, MD and Irene Wilder of Westminster, MD. He was preceded in death by his wife of many years, Mildred (Mike) Largent; four brothers, Hersey, Harley, Oliver and Clem Largent; and one sister, Mamie Funkhouser.

G. Lloyd Knestrick
1925-2000
G. Lloyd Knestrick, 74, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, February 24, 2000 at his home, while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle and friends, Brenda Morrison, Hope Roberts, Amy Long and Marite Pelverts. Born April 7, 1925, in Washington, PA, he was the son of the late Gleason Knestrick and Alice Gertrude McDonough Knestrick. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. He retired in 1980 as an optical physicist with the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the Army Ambulance Co. in the European Theatre and Philippine Islands. He was a member of the local DAV Chapter 8 and Chapter 34 in Morgan County. He was a member of Newton D. Baker Post 896, VFW and Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60. He received a bachelor of arts degree in physics from Washington and Jefferson College, Washington. He is survived by his wife, Rita West Knestrick; one daughter, Linda Lee Knestrick; one stepdaughter, Julie Trainor Sampras; one stepson, Maurice Talbot Trainor; one granddaughter, Abigail Frances Trainor; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, February 28, at the Calvary United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Al Clipp officiating. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, February 28 in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Morgan County, with military graveside services by Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60. Contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Morgan County, 4100 Valley Road, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411 or to Calvary United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 220 W. Maude M. Baker
1911-2000
Maude Marie Baker, 88, of Hedgesville, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000, at City Hospital, Martinsburg. Born June 22, 1911, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Ulysses S. Grant Potter and Maude McCoullough Potter. She was a member of the Faith Bible Church, Hedgesville. She was employed by the former Perfection Garment Co. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She is survived by one daughter, Donna Jean French of Hedgesville; three grandchildren, Steven Craig French, Cheryl Lynne Bare and Jan Marie Kidwell; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Baker; three brothers, Haden Potter, Edmond Potter and Norman Potter; and one sister, Helen Dailey Hammack. Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, February 25, at the Johnsontown Bible Church, with Pastor Jack Rudy, the Rev. Darrell Gentry and the Rev. Andrew Hamrick officiating.
