Jack W. Buck

Former Juneau resident Jack W. Buck died June 29, 1998, in Tacoma, Wash. Services will be July 3 in Tacoma. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 12:10 p.m. July 10 at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in Juneau.

Buck was born Jan. 3, 1923. He was ordained as one of the first deacons for the Diocese of Juneau on July 27, 1977. He was the first deacon for the Cathedral Parish. He also was the administrator of St. Ann's Care Center from 1977 to 1990.

Buck and his wife Joan moved to Tacoma to continue in his diaconate ministry.

Bishop Michael W. Warfel of Juneau said that Buck was a man of faith who exemplified the ministry of a deacon through his service to others.

Buck also found the diaconate a way of strengthening his own spiritual life as a Christian, his family said.

He is survived by his five children, 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Ernest Miles ``Mike'' Choate

Longtime Juneau resident Ernest Miles ``Mike'' Choate died June 17, 1998, in Seattle at Virginia Mason Hospital. He was 74. Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the ANB Hall in Juneau. Graveside services were held June 25 in Oregon.

Choate was born in Junction City, Ore., to Mike and Lena Choate. He served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II.

Choate drove log trucks and operated bulldozers in Oregon and California before moving to Alaska, where he worked until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife Mary Choate of Juneau; daughters Jerrie Reel, Peggy Hulse, Sharon Morgan, Kathy Holdren and Brenda Hanson, all of Oregon; son Ray Choate of Oregon; stepsons Barry Smith, Michael Smith, and Nick Kokotovich Jr., all of Juneau and Haines, Crawford Smith of Pennsylvania; and his sisters Minerva Rasmussun of Oregon and Mary Lee Quale of Seattle. He is preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Dolan O. Lancaster

Long-time Juneau resident Dolan O. Lancaster died July 14, 1998, in Juneau. Services will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Moose Lodge #700. Interment will follow at Alaskan Memorial Park with graveside service by VFW Post 5559.

Lancaster was born Aug. 19, 1926, in Peoria, Ill. He attended school and worked in Illinois. Lancaster joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, and served until he was discharged in 1951.

He moved to Juneau in 1959, where he worked for the Bureau of Public Works. In 1960, he transferred to State of Alaska Department of Highway, where he worked until he retired in 1986.

Lancaster was a member of VFW Post 5559, American Legion Post #25, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Temple and Shrine Club, and Moose Lodge #700 Juneau.

He is survived by his wife Jean of Juneau; brothers James Lancaster of Illinois and Dellard Lee Lancaster of Maryland; sons John Lancaster and Harold Lancaster of Juneau; daughters Tina Ellen Lancaster of Ketchikan, Cathy M. Pruett of Juneau, and Candy A. Fenderson of Arizona; five granddaughters; seven grandsons; and two great grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Moose Lodge #700, P.O. Box 32980, Juneau, AK 99803; or to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, 3200 Hospital Drive, Suite 100, Juneau, AK 99801.

Andrew Samuel Jackson

Former Juneau resident Andrew Samuel Jackson died on June 3, 1998, in a boating accident traveling from Hoonah to Juneau. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the ANB Hall in Juneau. A service will also be held in Hoonah at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the ANB Hall there.

Jackson was born May 22, 1955, in Hoonah, to Florence and Andrew Jackson. His Tlingit name was Dah-yis-chees. He was a Kagwantaan from the Wolf House, a son of the Coho Clan. His family said he was proud of his Kagwantaan heritage and his tribal family.

Jackson graduated from Hoonah High School in 1973. He lived in Hoonah, Petersburg, Klawock, Juneau and most recently, Anchorage, with his fiancee Deanne Antioquia.

Jackson enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he worked as a commercial fisherman. His family writes that he never forgot his elders, bringing them subsistence foods whenever he had the opportunity. He worked as an instructor for Compass North, a nautical school that provided people with 6-pak and 100 ton licenses. He also worked as an electrician apprentice.

Jackson was a shareholder in Huna Totem, Goldbelt and Sealaska Corporations. He was also a member of Hoonah ANB Camp 12 and was registered to the Juneau Tlingit-Haida Community Council.

His family writes that he loved basketball, and played with the Hoonah Braves and in the Gold Medal Tournament. He also enjoyed racquetball and won a state pool tournament several years ago.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Flossie Jackson; brother Duane White; grandmother Maudie Austin; grandfathers Pat Austin, Jimmy Martin, and David James; aunts Eleanor Olsen, Mina Carteeti, Pauline Fernandez, and Alice Martin; and uncles Ed Austin, Duncan Johnson and Sam Johnson.

He is survived by his mother Millie Jack of Hoonah; fiancee Deanne Antioquia of Anchorage; sisters Elaine Rimot of California, Andrea Jackson of Washington, Bernice Jackson of Anchorage, Carolyn Noe and Corrine Jackson of Juneau, and Julie Jackson, Marilyn Hillman, and Linette and Shawna Jack of Hoonah; brothers Gerard and Jerry White Jr. of Hoonah; uncles Ronald Austin, John Martin Sr., Al Martin, Jerry White Sr., and Eli Sharclane Sr.; aunts Annabelle Revels, Martha Horton, and Cecelia Kunz; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Clifford H. Broussard

Former Juneau resident Clifford H. Broussard died July 2, 1998, in Renton, Wash. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Alaska Memorial Park in Juneau.

Lawerence Mark Gray

A memorial service for former Juneau resident Lawerence Mark Gray will be held on July 23 at 2 p.m. at the ANB Hall in Juneau. A service will also be held in Hoonah on July 25 at 2 p.m. at the ANB Hall.

Gray was one of three men in a boating accident traveling from Hoonah to Juneau. Although Gray's body has not yet been found, his family presumes he died on June 5.

Sandra Lee Armstrong

Juneau resident Sandra Lee Armstrong died this morning at her home in Juneau. Services will be held Wednesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 7 p.m.

Armstrong was born July 18, 1945, in Anchorage, to Edmond John Shields and Betty Little-Shields. She served two terms as a State Representative in the Oregon State Legislature. She also worked as a Welfare Reform Coordinator for the State of Alaska. She moved to Juneau in the late 1980s.

Armstrong lived a lifetime dedicated to public service, her friends said. She helped establish the St. Vincent de Paul Family Center. Friends said her advocacy for the homeless was greatly appreciated.

She is survived by her three sons, Jon and Tod Richards of Oregon and Scott Richards of Juneau; daughter Harmony Armstrong of Juneau; mother Betty Little-Shields of Canada; sisters Pat Maher of California and Beverly Shields of Oregon; and brother Michael Shields of Russia.

Memorials may be sent to the family at 1800 Northwood Dr., #M102, Juneau, Alaska 99081. Friends request that no store-bought flowers be sent, only hand-picked ones.
