Ida T. James

Juneau resident Ida T. James, 91, died March 30, 2006, in Juneau.

She was born June 12, 1914, in Cove, Ariz. She attended school in Arizona, as well as Riverside Nursing School in California. She was a member of the Nurses Association and worked as a nurse assistant for 48 years. She was a Juneau resident since 1951.

She is survived by her husband, Fenton D. James; sister, Mable Williams of Sitka; brothers, Danny (Ann) Miller of Albuquerque, N.M., and Frankie Miller of Arizona; stepdaughters, Gloria (James) Jack of Juneau and Carolyn (Anthony) McIntyre of Sitka; grandchildren, Kenneth and Renee Southerland, Mark (Alia) Granda of Juneau, George John and Delmer McIntyre of Sitka, and April (Robert) Phillips of Sitka; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces in Juneau, Sitka and Albuquerque.

Pallbearers are Dr. Jim Thompson, Dr. Todd Huttenlocher, Dr. Tom McCabe, Dr. Bob Urata, Dr. Mark Peterson, Karl Bosler, James Jack Sr., Anthony McIntyre, Andrew Gamble Jr., Randall Gamble, John Nease Sr., and Peter Nease Jr. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Diebels, Dr. Fred Chu, Dr. Alex D. Malter, Ken Brewer, Matilda Gamble, Jean Hogue, Gina Evans, Melvin Gamble, Gerald Gamble and Valerie Gamble-Houston.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall, 320 W. Willoughby Ave., and at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 7 at Northern Lights United Church, 400 West 11th St.

Donald F. Carlo Jr.

Former Juneau resident Donald F. Carlo Jr., 37, died April 4, 2006, in Anchorage.

He was born Sept. 15, 1968, in Fairbanks to Marlene and Don Carlo Sr. He was a laborer.

He received his bachelor's degree in business, with a minor in paralegal studies at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau.

He was survived by his twin sister, Donna Carlo; Darletta Carlo; mother, Marlene Carlo; brothers, Jeff Nelson and Charles Nelson.

Services will be at 4 p.m. on April 8 at St. Mathew's Church, 1029 First St., in Fairbanks. Pallbearers are Rick McMullen, and Jeff and Charles Nelson.

Dorothy Wallace

Dorothy Wanamaker Wallace, whose Tlingit name was Natstklaa of the Kaagwaaantaan clan, died April 2, 2006, surrounded by family and friends at her north Douglas home. She died three weeks after suffering a stroke.

Wallace was born in the Chichagof Island community of Chatham on July 27, 1916, the daughter of William and Margaret Wanamaker. She was baptized at St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Sitka and moved to Juneau in 1926, when her father got a job working at the Alaska-Juneau gold mine.

She married William Leslie Jack in 1936. After his death, she married Amos Louis Wallace, a master carver and fisherman.

She started to raise her family in Juneau during the Great Depression. During World War II, her volunteer homefront job was making bandages for the Red Cross. She was a fish processor at Hawk and Excursion inlets for more than 20 years. She also worked at the Purity bakery and was a housekeeper at the Governor's Mansion for Gov. William Egan. Her main job, however, was being a housewife as she raised her 12 children.

She earned her General Educational Development diploma in the early 1980s. She was named to the Juneau GED Hall of Fame for her work in adult education and recruitment of students into the program.

She was a lifelong member of Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 2, where she dedicated her life to the advancement of Alaska Native rights. Her last elected position was as camp mother in November 2004.

She was active in the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, and served on the church council and the restoration committee. She also was renowned for the quality of her Easter bread and her beadwork.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; her sister, Phyllis Varrelman; brothers, William and Matthew Wanamaker; her daughters, Lois Hoover, Kathleen Boone and Merle Ross; and her infant children, Sonja Wallace, Lawrence William Jack and Lois Laraine Jack.

She is survived by her sisters, Eunice Akagi of Juneau and Katherine Goade of Seattle; daughters, Beverly Brisco of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Marjorie Peters of Anchorage; sons, Kenny Jack of Cordova, Roger Jack of Edmonds, Wash., Daryle Jack of Juneau and Brian Wallace of Juneau; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The pallbearers are Kenny Perkins, John Wilson, Brandon Dixson-Jack, Dean George, Andy Ebona and Michael Ross. The honorary pallbearers are Wells Gabier, Sam Wanamaker, Roger Jack, Daryle Jack, David Goade, Alan Munro, Ray Wilson, Frank Peters and Al McKinley.

The Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 2 memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 7, at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall, and the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church.

Danny E. Kalen

Former Skagway resident Danny E. Kalen, 58, died, March 31, 2006, at home peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Oct. 9, 1947, to Edward and Barbara Kalen. He graduated from Anchorage East High School in May 1966 and served in the U.S. Army in the 1960s during the Vietnam War. He worked numerous construction jobs throughout Alaska and earlier in life worked in engine service for the Skagway White Pass Railroad and the Alaska Railroad in Fairbanks, where he was trained to be an engineer. He was the youngest elected member for the City Council for Skagway. He was a member of the Skagway Elks Club and the Disabled American Veterans

Family members said, "He was a devoted father, grandfather, son, brother and friend - and will be dearly missed. After retirement, Danny enjoyed playing pinochle with his friends at the Triangle Bar, camping, fishing, car rides, visiting with family and friends and reading."

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his daughter, U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Mary Dejnozka of Elmendorf Air Force Base (AFB), Alaska; grandchildren, Matthew and Allison of Elmendorf AFB; mother, Barbara Kalen of Skagway; brother, Patrick (Susan) Kalen of Fairbanks; sisters, Betsy Albecker of Skagway and Barbie Kalen of Fairbanks; and close friend Bernice of Juneau.

Pallbears are John Dapcevich, Ted Smith, Steve Dargis, Joe Winters, and Tom Gregory, Sr. Honorary Pallbearers are Michael Obert, Jeffrey Benjamin, John Hanlon, Gilbert Dick, John Lindolff, Michael Duffy and Brad Thoe.

A military memorial will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 at the Juneau Elks Lodge. His ashes will be buried next to his father in Skagway. A graveside service will be held at that time.

Kenneth Natkong

Juneau resident Kenneth David Natkong, 42, died April 16, 2006, in Juneau.

He was born on Jan. 23, 1964, in Anchorage and grew up in Hydaburg. He was a resident of Juneau for two years. He was a carving teacher in Pelican, a counselor, village public safety officer and EMT.

He was a police chief in Hydaburg for years. He graduated from State Trooper Academy. He was an EMT and attended medical school in Anchorage. He spent six years in the National Guard and 2 1/2 years in college.

He traveled Alaska for many years. His most recent stop was to study business management at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau.

Family members said, "He worked hard to achieve his goals in life. He was a happy-go-lucky, caring, giving person with a heart of gold. He loved to help people. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten."

He is survived by his mother, Rose Miller of Pelican; father, Charles Natkong Sr., of Hydaburg; sisters, Rodie Young, Jessie Natkong, Mary Martha Miller, Sassy Hill and Babs Wilson; brother, Matthew Wilson; and numerous family members throughout Southeast Alaska.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 20 at the Alaskan Memorial Park and Mortuary in Juneau, 3839 Riverside Drive. Honorary pallbearers will be Matthew Wilson, Allen Wilson, Mark Martin, Bruce Edenshaw, Rob Sanderson and Bob Milton.

Friends and family are welcome to gather at 5 p.m. on April 19 at 2981 Foster Ave. West Juneau. For further information, contact the family at (907) 738-0624 or (907) 738-2941. Flowers are welcome.
