Grace Jean Edelman

Grace Jean Edelman, 88, died in the Juneau Pioneers' Home on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, after several months of continually failing health.

She was born Dec. 7, 1917, in Port Colbone County, Ontario, to George and Bessie Gregory. Her mother, a Salvation Army worker, died of tuberculosis when she was 2 years old. Her father later remarried. His wife, Gladys, was loved by Grace as "Mother." She grew up in Navesink, N.J., where she attended All Saints Episcopal church. When older, she began attending a Baptist church where she met her future husband. She had many relatives who were active in Salvation Army and she always felt a connection with the Salvation Army.

She worked as a secretary in New Jersey and Toronto and San Diego during World War II.

On Jan. 5, 1939, she married Phillip Charles Edelman. They lived in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Florida and California before moving to Alaska in 1950. They lived in several towns around Alaska and eventually homesteaded in Palmer. In 1962, they moved to Juneau, where she worked for the Alaska Department of Revenue until her retirement in 1979.

When the Edelmans moved to Juneau, they joined the local Masonic organizations. She was a devoted member of Juneau Chapter No. 7 Order of the Eastern Star until her death. She worked tirelessly as long as health permitted and rarely missed meetings. She served as Worthy Matron two times and held offices through 2004. She and Phil were strong supporters of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls. For many years, they decorated the Masonic Temple with beautiful handmade ornaments and gave a Christmas party for the Rainbow girls. It was the highlight of their Christmas season.

Everyone who knew her has been awed by the beautiful counted cross-stitch pictures she created. She was especially proud of her lighthouse series that includes individual stitched pictures of six Southeast Alaska lighthouses and a map showing the location of each of the lighthouses. She also made many cross-stitch pictures for her friends.
