Emma Louise Homesley Avans
05-29-2003

Services for Emma Louise Homesley Avans, 78, were at 11 a.m. May 27 at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center Chapel, with Rev. Truman Norred officiating. Burial was in Green lawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Avans died May 25 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy E. and Jerre Cook and Shelia and Bobby Newell, all of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Kim Holley and Shay Cook and six grandchildren, Keaton Holley, Brandon Holley, Sara Holley, Emma Newell, Brady Zellar and Owen Hollingsworth.

Pallbearers were Gary Homesley, Huey Homesley Marty Holley, Brice Hay, Judd Avans and Mike Newell. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Myrtle Casey Sunday School Class at West Side Baptist Church.

Mrs. Avans was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County and a member of West Side Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Will Tom Avans.

Memorials may be made to West Side Baptist Church, P. O. Box 459, Jacksonville 36265.

Stanley Cleve Patterson
04-10-2003

Graveside services for Stanley Cleve Patterson, 58, were at 2 p.m. April 9 at Young’s Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Chuck Cummings officiating and Joey Patterson speaking.
Mr. Patterson died Saturday at Jacksonville Medical Center.

Survivors include two sons, Frank Dewhite Patterson of Orange County, Calif., and Gordon Michael Patterson of Jacksonville; two sisters, Alma Faye Penland and Linda Lou Angle, both of Jacksonville; two brothers, Tommy Joe Patterson and Ted Patterson, both of Jacksonville; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Patterson was an Etowah County native. He was a member of Unity Full Gospel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleve and Alma Lee Patterson, and a granddaughter.

Willard I. Porter
06-05-2003

Memorial services for Willard I. Porter, 78, were at 2 p.m. June 5 at Coldwater Congregational Holiness Church with Rev. Gerald Clark officiating and K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center in charge.
Mr. Porter died June 2 at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia Porter; two daughters, Marie Liner of Ohatchee and Judy DeRock of Honeoye Falls, N. Y.; two sisters, Jean Kenney of California and Thelma Punnett of Buffalo, N.Y.; a brother, Howard Porter of Rochester, N.Y.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Porter retired from Eastman Kodak in 1986 and moved from Fairport, N.Y. to Jacksonville.

Contributions may be made to Coldwater Congregational Holiness Church General Fund, 6227 Alabama 78 W., Eastaboga, 36260.

Leona Jaskowski

Leona Jaskowski, a former resident of Jacksonville, died May 18 at Life Care Center Nursing Home in Elyria, Ohio. Busch Burmeisfer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Jaskowski is survived by two sons, Roy Jaskowski and Chet Jaskowski; five grandchildren, Denise Maney, Roy Jaskowski Jr., Cheryl Ford, Bob Jaskowski and Kevin Jaskowski; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jaskowski, and a son, Donald Jaskowski.

Wallace Riley Usrey
04-03-2003

Services for Wallace Riley Usrey, 61, of Gadsden were at 11 a.m. March 27 at The Tabernacle in Gadsden, with Revs. Don Arnold, W. V. Grant, J. L. Adcock and Larry Perkins officiating. Burial was at Southside Memorial Park. Village Chapel Funeral Home was in charge.
Mr. Usrey died March 24.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Usrey of Gadsden; his mother Edna Clem of Pell City; three daughters, Tammy Biggs of Pleasant Valley, Kim Reaves of Oxford and Melissa Thornhill of St. Louis; two sons, Gary Usrey of Lincoln and Cullen Rusk of Gadsden; six sisters, Ruth Dement of Tallulah, La., Charlotte Carr of Wellington, Joyce Yancey of Weaver, Teresa Bradshaw of Saks, Martha Hunter and Tina Usrey, both of Ohatchee; four brothers, Harold Usrey of Pinson; Glenn “Frog” Usrey of Saks, and Clint and Ermond Usrey of Ohatchee; 13 grandchildren and a host of family and friends.

Memorials may be made to The Tabernacle Children’s Ministry, 1301 S. 11th St., Gadsden.

Retha Kirby Ward
04-03-2003

Services for Retha Kirby Ward, 94, were at 11 a.m. March 29 at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center Chapel, with Revs. William Cain and Rev. Truman Norred officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Baptist Cemetery.
Mrs. Ward died March 25 at Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Betty and Joe McCarley of Jacksonville, Catherine Clark of Mt. Clemens, Mich., and Margie Harmon of Jacksonville; three sisters, Prince Simpkins of Pell City, Julia Allen of Odenville and Inez Dyess of Phenix City; six grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Mrs. Ward was a native of St. Clair County and a resident of Calhoun County most of her life. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and enjoyed needlework.

Ok Yong Long
05-01-2003

Services for Ok Yong Long, 48, were at 1 p.m. April 24 at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. T. R. Harper officiating. Burial was in Anniston Memorial Gardens with Anniston Memorial Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Long died April 21 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include her husband, Sonny Long of Jacksonville; a son, Tommy Long of Jacksonville; a daughter, Melissa Long of Jacksonville; two brothers, Jung Kil Son and Jae Jyeol Son, both of South Korea; and two sisters, Jae Sup Son and Jung Hwa Son, both of South Korea.

Pallbearers were elders of Faith Temple in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Long was a member and former deacon of Anniston Korean Full Gospel Assembly of God Church.

James Dan Couch
04-03-2003

Services for James Dan Couch, 77, were at 2 p.m. April 2 at Tredegar Chapel Congregational Holiness Church, with Rev. David Daniels officiating. Burial was in Green lawn Memorial Gardens with K. L. Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Center in charge.
Mr. Couch died March 31 at Jacksonville Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Viola Parris Couch of Jacksonville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Tawyana Couch of Oxford and Dennis E. and Ann Couch of Jacksonville; a sister, Julie Hardy of Glencoe; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Bass, DeWayne Allen and Edward Allen.

Mr. Couch grew up in the Roy Webb community and lived in Tredegar community more than 50 years. He retired from Union Yarn with 31 years service. He was a member and church musician at Tredegar Chapel Congregational Holiness Church for the past 56 years.
