Bill Tate

Graveside services for Bill Tate, 73, of Hoover were Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 at Union Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Hughlen Murphree officiating.

Holly Pond Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tate died Wednesday, Dec. 11 after a battle with cancer. He was born and educated in Texas A&M with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the United States Navy before moving into the Aerospace and Missile Defense Industry. His employment by corporations like Aeronca, Hugh’s Aircraft and Atlantic Research Corp. allowed him to become instrumental in projects like the Convair Wing Design, development of air to air refueling systems and the subsequent anti-icing and de-icing testing of these systems on Mt. Washington, N.H. He was responsible for the preliminary design and development of the digital, remote controlled, automated three dimensional machining system as well as the electron beam welding machine.

His career took him from Mt. Washington, N.H. to White Sands to Huntsville directing such projects as the structural redesign of the Lockheed C-130, Boeing B-47, and Boeing B-52 all stawarts of our military air forces. While in Huntsville, Mr. Tate was responsible for the launch instructions for Jupiter, Mercury and Saturn launch vehicles, as well as the attitude and re-entry control systems for the Jupiter and Saturn projects.

In the late 60s he spent the last 30+ years designing and building self-supporting fiberglass enclosures for the pulp washing process of the paper industry. His washer hood designs are considered “the best available control technology” for compliance with the EPA cluster rules.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Frances White Tate; two daughters, Beverly Tate Flournoy of Hoover and Kimberly Tate of Charleston, S.C.; and three grandchildren, Amy and Stacy Flournoy and Aaron Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Brookwood Hospice.

Visitation was Saturday.

Olivia Nikole Myers

Funeral services for Olivia Nikole Myers, age 2 weeks and five days, of Bremen were at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002 at Holly Pond Chapel, the Rev. Micheal Parker officiating, with burial in Holly Pond Cemetery.

Holly Pond Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She died Saturday, Dec. 14 at the University of Alabama Medical Center. She was born Nov. 25 at UAB to Dusty Myers and Danielle Brown.

Survivors include her parents; grandparents, Roger and Patsy Brown and Dennis and Sibby Myers, all of Bremen, and Pam and Terri Yeager of Warrior; and great-grandparents, Fred and Lois Ellard of Holly Pond, Clarence and Myrvlene Brown and Mabel Myers and the late Dover Myers, all of Bremen, and Lou and Alden Burks of Arkadelphia.

Vivian Roberts Cornett

Funeral services for Vivian Roberts Cornett, 81, of Lacey’s Spring, Union Hill community, were Monday, Dec. 16, 2002 at Arab Memorial Chapel, Pastor Harry Saint officiating, with burial in West Point Cemetery.

Arab Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cornett died Saturday, Dec. 14 at Huntsville Hospital. She was born on Sept. 10, 1921 to Silas and Mary Elizabeth Hall Roberts. She was a housewife and member of West Point Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Lewis Cornett of Union Hill; a son, Prentis (Jane) Cornett of Lacey’s Spring; five daughters, Brenda (Lafett) Hendrix of Somerville; Nancy (Jessie) Walker of Morgan City; Gayla (Charles) Warren of Madison, Pat (Stan) Jullian of Millbrook, Sheree (Glen) Black of Lacey’s Spring; a sister, Irene Hollaway of Hartselle; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Travis Hendrix, Phillip Hendrix, Michael Walker, Jeffrey Warren, Patrick Warren, Dustin Cornett, Matthew Price, and Will Black.

Odie Cecil Price

Funeral services for Odie Cecil Price, 91, of Blountsville will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at Blountsville Funeral Chapel, Drennen Alldredge and Keith Taylor officiating, with burial in Liberty Hill Cemetery.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Price died Sunday, Dec. 15 at Medical Center Blount in Oneonta. He was born in Blount County to Samuel Lewis and Mary Lee Taylor Price . He was retired from the paving crew for the State of Alabama Department of Transportation. He was also a member of the Royal Advent Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by parents.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Thomas Price ; a daughter, Shirley Price Fondren of Blountsville; two sons, Charles Price and Rickey Price, both of Blountsville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be David Price, Toby Price, Billy Smith, Tony Price, Chuck Price and Jason Stallings.

Conrad E. Curl

Funeral services for Conrad E. Curl, 65, of Huntsville will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at at Laughlin Service Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Jackson and the Rev. Emerson Lyle officiating, with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Laughlin Service Funeral Home of Huntsville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Curl died Sunday, Dec. 15. He was a native of Cullman County and a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church and its Pastor’s Sunday School class. He was retired from AMCOM at Redstone Arsenal.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Lila Curl.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Davis Curl; two sons, Gregory Curl of Huntsvile and Reagan (Kelley) Curl of Atlanta; brothers, Edsel Curl of Gadsden and Kedy Curl of Jackson, Tenn.; two sisters, Wanda Curl and Nita Curl Martin, both of Birmingham; and two special friends, Bella and Eli Tylicki of Huntsville.

Memorials may be made to the Love Offering at Whitesburg Baptist Church or to Hospice Family Care.

Visitation was Monday.

Sarah Diane Grissom

Graveside services for Sarah Diane Grissom, 6 days old, of Cullman were at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002 at Roselawn Cemetery.

Roselawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She died Sunday, Dec. 15, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born Dec. 9, 2002, the daughter of Matthew and Tammy Grissom.

Survivors include her parents; grandparents, Billy and Judy McDonald of Cullman and Amos and Vicky Grissom of Decatur.

Edward ‘Doug’ Smith
Funeral services for Edward “Doug” Smith, 54, of Vinemont will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Charles York and Gary Sartin officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith died Tuesday, Dec. 17 at Veterans Hospital in Birmingham. He was born March 10, 1948 in Cullman to Edward and Opal Liepert Smith. He was an assistant manager for Big Lots in Huntsville and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a son, Jason Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Ann Cooley Smith of Vinemont; his mother, Opal Smith of Cullman; his father-in-law, Charles Cooley of Ardmore; and his sister, Judy Smith of Cullman.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Vellie Mae Smith

Funeral services for Vellie Mae Smith, 86, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002 at Corinth West First Congregational Methodist Church, the Rev. Butch Shedd officiating, with burial in Corinth Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith died Monday, Dec. 16. She was born Aug. 1, 1916 in Cullman to William and Mary Martha Skinner Selvaniel. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Windel R. Smith and Norman S. Smith; two sisters, Marie Jerigan and Louetta Shedd; and four brothers, William, Bascum, Bertis and Emery Shedd.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald M. Smith and Roger G. Smith; two sisters, Loretta Saunders and Vaudie Raines; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Russell Lee Tubbs

Funeral services for Russell Lee Tubbs, 35, of Leesburg, Fla., formerly of Cullman, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002 at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, Donnie Robertson, David Holton and Chiwena Kibanje officiating, with burial in Fairview West Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tubbs died Saturday, Dec. 14 in Leesburg, Fla. He was born March 18, 1967 in Cullman to Sherman and Irma Tubbs. He was a carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gordon and Carrie Nichols and Orval Tubbs.

Survivors include his parents; two sons, Cory Lee Tubbs and Eric Brandon Tubbs; a sister, Lorri (Chad) Lee; a brother, Eric Carson Tubbs; a grandmother, Ruby Tubbs all of Cullman; four aunts, Gina Carmichael, Bonnie Graves, Corene (Jim) Phillips, Melissa (Steve) Shapleigh; two uncles, Don (Hilda) Nichols and Dwight Nichols; and his ex-wife, Veronica Jill Cupp.

Pallbearers will be John Chandler, Chris Graves, Jason Graves, Harlin Green, Bill James and Tim Nichols.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Lorene Harrison Duffey
Funeral services for Lorene Harrison Duffey, 90, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, Dr. Edwin Hayes officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery. The body will lie in state two hours prior to the service.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Duffey died Tuesday, Dec. 17 at her residence. She was born Dec. 14, 1912 in Alabama to William Chester and Jessie Maddox Harrison. She was a homemaker and was active in the First Baptist Church of Cullman for over 60 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers and sisters; and a grandson, Jeffery Allan Byrd.

Survivors include three daughters, Martha (Owen) Lloyd of Brentwood, Tenn., Sue (George) Elam of Cullman and Barbara (Larry) Byrd of Warner Rubins, Ga.; two sisters, Alene (Bill) Johnston of Arab and Betty Harrison of Cullman; a brother, Robert (Lurie) Harbison of Guntersville; six grandchildren, Asa Blalock, Julie (Bryan) Parker, Todd (Michelle) Suggs, Susan (Jason) Willoughby, Lisa (Keith) Garrison, Sheila (Steve) Burpee; and eight great-grandchildren, Brittany Blalock, Robert and Maggie Dinker, Nash Suggs, Kailey Garrison, Jamie, Robert and Sarah Burpee.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ralph D. Blackmon

Funeral services for Ralph D. Blackmon, 67, of Baileyton will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at Eidson Chapel, Hughlen Murphree officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Blackmon died Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born July 6, 1935 to George Dewey and Cora Sanders Blackmon.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbi Vasser Blackmon of Baileyton; three daughters, Pam (Terry) Yancy of Eva, Connie Couey of Anniston and Sherrie (Rodney) Bell of Arab; two brothers, Travis Blackmon of Jacksonville and Max Blackmon of Bremen; four sisters, Lillian Hamond, Vela Mae Cantrel, both of Bremen, Ga., Peggy Teal of Temple, Ga., and Inez Arrington of Cullman; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.
