Alabama, U.S., County Marriage Records, 1805-1967 - 1814-1935

Mr. Ray M. Woodham, 94 of Ozark, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at his home after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday Jan. 2, at Chalkhead Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy West, the Rev. Thaxton Whiddon, Chaplain John Withrock and Mr. Randy Outlaw officiating. Interment will follow at Ewell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 207 W. Adams St., Dothan, Ala. 36303.
Mr. Woodham was a native and life-long resident of Dale County, where he was a member of Ewell Methodist Church. He was engaged in farming and loved gardening. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Mr. Woodham was under the fine care of Covenant Hospice at the time of his death.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mellona Powers Woodham, Ozark; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Woodham Carr, Pensacola, Fla., Patricia and Tommy Shipman, Ozark, and Jeanelle and Doug Hill, Navarre, Fla.; one sister, Minnie Lou Beverette, Midland City; one sister-in-law, Pearl Woodham, Ozark; six grandchildren; Wynona Lynn Carr, Anthony Shipman and his wife, Jenny, Jennifer Powell and her husband, Craig, Adam Brockett and his wife, Amanda, Carrie Brockett Nemish, and Derrick Hill; three great-grandchildren, Kaylie Powell, Preston Davis, and Brandon Davis.

MSgt. (retired) Jack Kirkman Brantley, 88 of Ozark, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 30, 2003, in Birmingham.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday Jan 2, at Holman Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with Army Chaplain Kenneth Ratlitf officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens with full military honors. The family will receive friends at from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at funeral home.
MSgt. (retired) Brantley was a native of Jefferson County, Ala., having lived in various locations while serving in the United States Army. He retired as a master sergeant after 33 years of service. He then worked for 11 years with Civil Service at Fort Rucker. He was a member of the Masonic Order.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Harbison Brantley.
Survivors include three daughters Diane Brantley Cotati, Calif., Debbie Brantley, Rohnart Park, Calif., and Sandra Williams, Ozark; one son, Douglas Aubrey Brantley Ozark; one sister, Ruth Ward, Selma; two brothers, Oscar Leon Brantley, Kerville Texas, and Samuel H. Brantley Sr., Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Mr. Dan Carroll, 92 of Ozark died Monday evening, Dec. 29, 2003, at Oakview Manor Health Care Center after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Holman Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with the Rev. Randall Yelverton officiating. Interment will be at Westview Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends after services at the funeral home chapel. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Vivian B. Adams School, Stewart Tarter Road, Ozark, Ala. 36360.
Mr. Carroll was a native and life-long resident of Ozark where he worked as a rural mail carrier for 43 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Ozark Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Vaughn Carroll; one sister, Alice Munn Carroll Dougherty; and one brother, George Warner Carroll.
Survivors include one daughter, Diane Carroll, Ozark; one step-son, James Grant and his wife, Rose, of Dothan; one sister, Mrs. Edith Carroll Smith, Ozark; two nieces, Alice Carroll Dougherty O'Brien, Savannah, Ga., and Betsy Carroll Muggli, Virginia Beach, Va.; one nephew, C.L.R. Dougherty Savannah, Ga.

Mrs. Lura Woods Gaines, 100 of Ozark, died early Monday evening, Dec. 29, 2003, at her home after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dave Rhodes officiating. Interment will follow. Visitation will be 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Asbury United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Gaines was a native of the Asbury Community of Dale County where she was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in several states while following her late Husband Louis Hewitt Gaines career. She was a graduate of Troy Normal School now Troy State University.
She is survived by two nephews, Col. (retired) Joseph S. Johnson and his wife, Pattie Johnson, and Judge Charles L. Woods, Ozark; several great nieces and nephews.

Dr. B. Dowling Petrey, 79 of Ozark, died at home on December 28, 2003, with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at Ozark First United Methodist Church on Wednesday December 31, with the Reverends Joe Reams and Dr. Billy Gaither officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Milne Home School for Girls, 1913 Gentilly Blvd., New Orleans, La., 70119.
He was born November 25, 1924, in Clearwater Florida, to the late Kathleen Dowling Petrey and Luke Duncan Petrey. He graduated from high school in Eufaula, Alabama in 1942, attended the University of Alabama, and graduated from the University of Alabama Medical College in 1947. He was a member of Sigma Chi and Phi Chi fraternities. While at the University of Alabama he earned the nickname of Speed.
In 1947 he was united in marriage with Jo Harris from Birmingham, Alabama who preceded him in death in 1985. He served as a medical officer with the Alabama National Guard for 10 years including 1 year of active duty at Fort Irwin, Ca.
Dr. Petrey performed his internship at City Hospital in Mobile, and practiced for one year in Mobile before moving to Ozark in 1949. He tirelessly and selflessly served his patients' needs throughout his career. At age 72 he retired after 50 years of medical service.
Dr. Petrey was a long time member of Ozark First United Methodist Church and was extremely proud of his Methodist heritage being a descendent of the early Methodist settlers of Dale County including Dempsey Dowling who founded Claybank Church.
Survivors include wife Hanna K. Petrey, Ozark, brother Donald Petrey Ozark, three sons, Dowling Petrey Jr. (Cheryl), Ozark, Tommy Petrey (Susan), Richmond, Va., Roy Petrey (Carole) Shalimar Fl., daughter Jo Ann Petrey, New Orleans, La. Step-sons Robert Harrell (Sargie), Graceville, Fl., and David Shawn, Ozark, and step-daughter Kathy Skoda (Joe), Ozark. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be the medical staff of Dale Medical Center.
He was a loving father and dedicated doctor who had compassion for all people. This love and care he gave to his atients was returned many times over, throughout his career. He touched many lives and will always be in the hearts of the people that he came in contact with during his 50 years of practicing medicine.

Mr. Charles Walker, 69 and a resident of Ozark, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at his residence.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Greater Old Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Ozark. The pastor, the Rev. W.R. Virgil, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. William "Bill" Teal, 81 of Edwin, passed away Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Dale Medical Center in Ozark.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with Brother William Hart, Brother Carl Ezell and Brother Earl Brogdon officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Mr. Teal's daughter, Faye Teal, 219 Cherry Lane, Ozark, Ala. 36360. Flowers will be accepted or
memorial contributions may be made to Edwin Cemetery Fund, c/o Larry Ryals, 302 Oak Drive, Abbeville, Ala. 36310.
Mr. Teal was born in Louisville, Ala., on Feb. 1, 1922, the son of the late Albert and Mary (Fillingim) Teal. Mr. Teal was a farmer early in his life, and later worked at Westpoint-Stevens in Abbeville until his retirement. He was a member of Edwin Methodist Church and was very active in his community. Most of all he enjoyed being with his family and friends and loved to help others.
Mr. Teal was preceded in death by his loving wife, Catherin Teal on Jan. 31, 2000.
He is survived by his daughter, Faye Teal of Ozark; and several nephews.
Pallbearers will be Marvin Ezell, David Teal, Richard Teal, Melvin Woodham, Lamar Thomlin and Dean Thomlin.

MSG Air Force retired Ashley Ewart, 88 of Ozark, passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 30 at Woodlawn Memory Gardens with a military chaplain officiating. The United States Air Force Honor Guard from Tyndall Air Force Base will perform full military honors at graveside. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home.
Mr. Ewart retired as master sergeant of the United States Air Force. He served our country during World War II in Korea and later served in Vietnam. After his retirement, he owned and operated Ewarts Small Engine Repair in Ariton for many years. He was Baptist by faith.
Mr. Ewart was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister, one grandchild and two great-grandchildren. His wife of 67 years, Mrs. Geraldine Lowe Ewart, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003.
Surviving family include two daughters, Carol Gauthier of Conneaut, Ohio, and Kathy Kalina and special friend, Edsel Jackson of Ozark; one son and daughter-in-law, Loel and Barbara Ewart of Ozark; one brother Harold Ewart of Arkansas; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Geraldine Lowe Ewart, 86 of Ozark, passed away Friday Dec. 26, 2003, at Dale Medical Center.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Woodlawn Memory Gardens with the Rev. William Hart officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday and 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Ewart was born April 17, 1917, is Des Arc, Ark. She was the military wife of MSG Ashley Ewart for 67 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, two sisters, one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Surviving family include two daughters Carol Gauthier of Conneaut, Ohio, and Kathy Kalina and special friend, Edsel Jackson, of Ozark; one son and daughter-in-law Loel and Barbara Ewart of Ozark; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Samuel Rex Brannon, 88 of Echo, died Thursday morning, December 25, 2003, in a Dothan hospital after a brief illness.
A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. .Saturday December 27, 2003 from the Ozark First United Methodist Church with Reverend Joe Reams officiating, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.
Mr. Brannon was a native of Dale County and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute now Auburn University in 1939. After receiving a Masters of Education Administration, Mr. Brannon served as an educator in several school systems including principal of Geneva County High School. He served in the United States Army Air Corp and the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Brannon also worked with the Florida Department Education again retiring.
His wife, Maude Jackson Brannon, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary Jo Brannon, Echo, two sisters-in-law Jessie Baumann, Echo, and Joan Torma, Ozark, a niece, Ann Stevens and her husband Craig, Lawrenceville, GA; two nephews, Michael Torma and his wife Susan, Shreveport, LA and Andrew Jackson and his wife Sharyl, of Florida, a special friend, Lorene Jackson, Lawrenceville, GA; several cousins also survive. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the charity of your choice.

Jay D. Johnson, beloved husband of Elizabeth Ellen Johnson, died December 23, 2003, while visiting family in Orlando, Fla.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday December 31, 2003, at 7 p.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Ozark, Alabama. Pastor Marshall will perform services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ewell volunteer fire department.

Mr. Bill Jimmerson, 57 of Kelly Avenue, Midland City, died Saturday morning Dec. 20, 2003, in a Dothan hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home with Rev Roy Winston officiating.
Interment will follow in Mt. Pisgah cemetery in Echo, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be at the funeral home parlors from 2 p.m. today until service time Monday with the family receiving friends from 2 until 4 p.m. this afternoon.
Mr. Jimmerson was born and raised in Echo, moving to Midland City in 1978 and was self employed as a carpenter. He was a member of the Church of Christ and enjoyed cats, chickens, gardening and watching football.
Mr. Jimmerson was preceded in death by a daughter, Carla Derose Jimmerson.
Survivors include his wife Gayle Jimmerson of Midland City; two sons, William Keith Jimmerson and his wife Tina of Westville, Fla., and Douglas Brian Jimmerson and his wife Shannon of Cowarts; his mother, Pearl Tharpe Jimmerson of Midland City; two sisters, JoAnn Strickland of Huntsville and Mary Ellen Smith of Dothan; five grandchildren, Joshua Everett, Jessica Everett, Bradley Jimmerson, Crystal Crutchfield, and Ragan Jimmerson.

Nina Mae Edwards, 91 of Ozark, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at Oakview Manor Nursing Facility in Ozark.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday Dec. 23, 2003 at 1 p.m. in the Sardis Missionary Baptist Church on Reynolds Street in Ozark with Rev S.C. Hudson officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery.
Trawick Funeral Home of Ozark, 334-774-8374, is in charge or arrangements.

Mrs. Annie Lee Segrest, 78 of Ozark, died Thursday morning, Dec. 18, 2003, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Campground Baptist Church with the Rev. Al. Sonanstine and the Rev. Harry Circle officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memory Gardens. Mrs. Segrest will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday until service time. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be given to Campground Baptist Church, 3898 Andrews Ave., Ozark, Ala. 36360.
Mrs. Segrest was born in Young Harris, Ga., and has lived in Ozark since 1966. She was a member of Campground Baptist Church where she served on various committees and worked with the WMU and Bible school. She also worked with Fort Rucker Sunday school before becoming active at Campground Baptist Church. She was a school teacher and worked as a substitute teacher in Ozark City Schools and Fort Rucker Schools for many years. She was a loving wife, mother and
friend to all and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, William M. Segrest of Ozark; daughter and son-in-law Betty and Hal Cox of Ozark; four sisters, Mae Lucille Jennings of Anchorage, Alaska, Clara Belle Love and husband, Howard, of Salisbury, N.C., Mary Virginia Bradley and husband, Bill, of Atlanta, Ga., Betty Sue Dyer and husband, James Perry, of Blairsville, Ga.; three brothers, J.L. Rhinehardt and wife, Nina, of Bluff City Tenn., C.L. Rhinehardt and wife, Ruby, of Young Harris, Ga., H.L. Rhinehardt of Young Harris, Ga.; grandchildren, Chris Blocker, Craig Blocker of Ozark, Robyn Stricklin and Grant of Sugar Hill, Ga., Tony Cox and Donna of Jacksonville, Fla., Angie Weeks and Kevin of Enterprise; six great-grandchildren Brianna Blocker, Regan and Kayden Stricklin, Christian Cox and Whitney and Garrett Weeks.
