KELSO, Tenn. - Melvin Lee Brown of Ben Thompson Road died Thursday at a Murfreesboro hospital. The funeral will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Gallant Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Cothren officiating.
Burial will be in Gatlin Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Parks Brown; three sons, Karry Brown of Houston, Daryl Brown of Huntsville and Joe Griffin of Elysian Fields, Texas; six daughters, Kandace Burrows of Fayetteville, Shelia Fox of Lynchburg, Tenn., Kelly Griffin of Bossier City, La., Kathy Johnson of Shreveport, La., Karen Harper of Heflin, La., and Carolyn Franco of Elora, Tenn.; one brother, Jimmy Brown of Teuquesta, Fla.; his stepmother, Donie Brown McIntire of Chattanooga; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Gallant Funeral Home in Fayetteville.

Levie Elliott
SCOTTSBORO - Levie Elliott, 77, of 2881 Swearingen Road died Thursday at a Marshall County hospital. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Grant Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Panquin Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Ann Moon of Guntersville; one son, Moses Elliott of Athens; two sisters, Wanda Gilley of Arab and Lorene Gibbs of Decatur; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Alice A. Hall
Alice Armstrong Hall, 84, of Huntsville died Thursday in Manchester, Tenn. The graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery with Dr. P. David Reynolds officiating.
Laughlin Service Funeral Home will be directing.
Survivors include one sister, Gertrude Williams Shehan of Huntsville; two nieces, Nina Armstrong and Marjorie Williams; and two nephews, Delbert Williams and Robby Armstrong.
Memorial donations may be made to HOPE Place, St. Jude Childrens Hospital or to a favorite charity.

Mary Ann Johnston
Mary Ann Elizabeth Johnston, 83, of Huntsville died Thursday at her home. Laughlin Service Funeral Home will announce the funeral.
Mrs. Johnston was a native of Jonesboro, Ark. She was an active member of Church of the Nativity as a Sunday school teacher and as a member of the mission guild. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters, Madison County Democratic Women and the Lady Shriners. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gray Johnston; and one son, Robert C. Johnston.
Survivors include three sons, William R. Johnston of Lake Ozark, Mo., James H. Johnston of Lisbon, Maine, and John R. Johnston of Huntsville; two sisters, Margaret Rhea and Wilma Russell, both of Houston; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Family Care, American Cancer Society or the Church of the Nativity building fund.

Paul Linderman Sr.
Paul Randall Linderman Sr., 60, of Huntsville died Thursday at a local hospital. Valhalla Funeral Home will announce the funeral.
Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Juliette Linderman; two sons, Paul Randall Linderman Jr. of Knoxville and Timothy H. Linderman of Birmingham; his father, Herman P. Linderman of Pinson; one brother, G. Wayne Linderman of Birmingham; and one granddaughter.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Holy Spirit Catholic Church building fund or a favorite charity.

Thomas Rie Mankins
ELKMONT - Thomas Rie Mankins, 83, of 29280 Leggtown Road died Thursday at his home. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with James Adams and Thomas Farris officiating.
Burial will be in Legg Cemetery.
Mr. Mankins was a member of Elkwood Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.
Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Schofield and Carol Swanner, both of Athens; four sons, Joey Mankins of Elkmont, Tommy Mankins of Leggtown, Ted Mankins of Chesapeake, Va., and Jerry Mankins of Hendersonville, Tenn.; one sister, Mary E. Reiser of South Bend, Ind.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Limestone County.

Ernest M. Nixon
CROSSVILLE - Ernest Marvin Nixon, 62, of 898 County Road 29 died Friday at his home. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Albertville Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Boaz.
Survivors include one son, Timothy Nixon of Boaz; one sister, Bonnie Peppers of Boaz; three half-sisters, Brenda Perkins of Saree, Linda Tolbert of Summit and Lacine Nixon of Florida; two half-brothers, Ronnie Nixon of Dora and Donnie Nixon of Montgomery; and one grandchild.

Allene Ray
Allene Juanita Lyle Ray, 98, of Huntsville died Monday at home. The funeral was Wednesday at Maple Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Evelyn Brodeur officiating.
Spry Funeral Home was directing.
Mrs. Ray was a Madison County native, but had lived in New York before moving to Huntsville in 1980. She was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one sister, Margaret Jones of Huntsville; three nephews; five nieces; one granddaughter; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Charles H. Shirley
STEVENSON - Charles Harold Shirley, 60, died Friday. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rudder Funeral Home in Stevenson with the Rev. Roland Keith and the Rev. Larry Underwood officiating.
Burial will be in Caperton Cemetery.
Mr. Shirley, a native of Stevenson, was a Georgia resident for the past 40 years and a member of the Nellie Head Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Shirley; one daughter, Carol Bentley; two sons, Fred Shirley and Charles Shirley; his mother, Eula Shirley; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 2 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Opal Tucker
NASHVILLE - Opal Lela Fanning Tucker, 72, formerly of Fayetteville, Tenn., died Thursday in Towson, Md. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at McCauley Funeral Home in Fayetteville with the Rev. Tim Walker officiating.
Survivors include one daughter, Andrea Evelius of Baltimore; one brother, Lester Fanning of Mountain Home, Ark.; two sisters, Gemella Edwards of Fayetteville and Vivian Jared of Chattanooga; and one grandson.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. preceding the funeral.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Dalewood Baptist Church building fund in Nashville.

Bobby Lee Ward
Bobby Lee Ward, 33, of Huntsville died Thursday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Mr. Ward was a Johnson High School graduate and finished at J.F. Drake Technical College where he majored in machine tool technology.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Ward; three sons, Michael Howell, Christopher Howell and Justin Lee Ward, all of Huntsville; his parents, Veronica and Bobby Ward of New Hope; and his grandmother, Vivian Stanley of Leighton.
Visitation will be today from 4 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

JOPPA - Effie Ballew, 88, died Friday at a local hospital. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Gober Funeral Home in Arab.
Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Viva Wheeler of Joppa and Ruth Hill of Arab; one sister, Edna Rhodes of Oneonta; and nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Kenneth W. Bentley
UNION GROVE - Kenneth Wayne Bentley, 43, of 2495 Rescue Road died Friday at a local hospital. A graveside service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Blount County.
Arab Memorial Chapel Funeral Home will be in charge of burial.
Survivors include his father, James Bentley of Snead; and one sister, Jane Williams of Blountsville.
Visitation will be today from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Velma M. Brown
FYFFE - Velma M. Brown, 85, died Thursday at a Dekalb County hospital. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at W.T. Wilson Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Phillip Webb and the Rev. Jimm Criffin officiating.
Burial will be in Mt. View Memory Gardens.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Beck of Fort Payne and Rita Cook of Winston Salem, N.C.; one son, Johnny Brown, of Fyffe; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Henry E. Dupree
WOODLAND, Calif. - Henry Earl "Buck" Dupree, 64, died Friday at a local hospital. The memorial service will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Temple BNai Sholom.
Spry Funeral Home will be in charge of burial.
Mr. Dupree was a native of Shorter. He was former owner of Sterling Cadillac in Huntsville.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara L. Dupree of Woodland; four daughters, Donna Sylvia Casallas of Woodland, Amanda Leigh Wallace of New Hope, Deborah Lynn Chaney of Gurley and May Kay Cooper of Franklin; one son, James Dupree of Houston; one sister, Mary Raley of Montgomery; and 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Paul W. Hancock
FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. - Paul Wilson Hancock, 67, of 5 Hancock Road died Saturday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home with the Rev. Jay Archer officiating.
Burial will be in Riverview Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Wilson was retired as director of the Directorate of Engineering and Housing at Army Missile Command.
He was selected as one of "Ten Outstanding Army Material Command Personnel" in 1987, outstanding senior engineer of the Huntsville post of the Society of American Military Engineers in 1985 and was nominated for the Federal Engineer of the Year award by the commander of the U.S. Army Missile Command.
Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Everett Hancock of Fayetteville; one son, Arthur Wayne Hancock of Minneapolis, Minn.; three daughters, Donna Hancock McAlister, Teresa Hancock Rhodes, both of Fayetteville and Cindy Hancock Butler of Atlanta; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Allen Pearson of Fayetteville; and one sister, Sarah Hancock Jennings of Fayetteville.
Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hattie L. Harris
Hattie Lee Harris, 78, died Friday at a local hospital. The funeral will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Leoma Baptist Church in Leoma, Tenn., with Pastor Wallace V. Green officiating.
Burial will be in Leoma Cemetery with Spry Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Harris was a native of Lawrence County, Tenn., but had lived in Huntsville 37 years. She was retired from Chrysler Corp. and was a member of Westlawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mattie L. Phillips of Sheffield and Sue McMahan of Huntsville; and three brothers, O.F. Newton of Leoma, James Newton of Lawrenceburg and Robert Newton of Shelbyville, Tenn.
Memorial donations may be made to Westlawn Baptist Church, 2515 17th St., Huntsville, 35805, or to cancer research.

Fred Hicks
UNION GROVE - Fred Hicks, 91, died Friday at a Decatur hospital. A graveside service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Union Grove Cemetery in Morgan County.
Gober Funeral Home of Arab will be in charge of burial.
Survivors include two special friends, Ilene Clark and Thomas Bodine.

Jennie Hinds
ARAB - Jennie Hinds, 72, died Friday at a Birmingham nursing home. A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Arab Memorial Cemetery.
Gober Funeral Home of Arab will be in charge of burial.
Survivors include one sister, Nancy Harding of Birmingham; and two brothers, Alto Johnson of Guntersville and Clark Johnson Jr. of Albertville.

Hilda J. Horton
HARTSELLE - Hilda Jervis Horton, 74, of 102 Lindsey Lane died Friday at her home. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Bailey and the Rev. Lydon Montgomery officiating.
Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Onel ''O.V. Horton; one daughter, Margaret H. ''Marti Pope of Hartselle; and two grandchildren.

Van B. Hubbard
BOAZ - Van Buron Hubbard, 88, died Friday at a Birmingham nursing home. The funeral will be today at Carr Funeral Home in Boaz.
Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Hubbard was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Hubbard; and one son, D.C. Hubbard.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Howard of Birmingham and Levonne Barnes of Gardendale; five sisters, Elvalee Skillman of Walnut Grove, Mary Morton, Jackie Hill and Fay Campbell, all of Boaz, and Jeanette Garmony of Altoona; three brothers, J.D. Hubbard and John Hubbard, both of Boaz, and B.C. Hubbard of Birmingham; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis with Laughlin Service Funeral Home in charge.

Maggie Burk Josey, 103, died Friday at a local nursing home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church in Columbus, Ga., with the Rev. Horace Allen Jr. officiating.
Burial will be in Green Acres Cemetery in Columbus with Nelms Memorial Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Josey was formerly of Columbus, Ga.
Survivors include four daughters, Majorie Allen of Huntsville, Corrie Thomas and Francis Evelyn Byrd, both of Columbus, and Johnnie Mae McNeil of Burlington, N.J.; one son, Arthur Lee Josey of Buena Vista, Ga.; and 31 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

James S. Kelly Jr.
James Stephen Kelly Jr. died Saturday at a local hospital. Laughlin Service Funeral Home will announce funeral arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel B. Kelly of Huntsville; three sons, Terry Kelly of Pittsburgh and Pat Kelly and Jeffrey Kelly, both of Huntsville; one daughter, Karen Reed of Huntsville; one brother, Stan Kelly of Fayetteville, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Paul Linderman Sr.
Paul Randall Linderman Sr., 60, died Thursday at a local hospital. Valhalla Funeral Home will announce the funeral.
Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Mr. Linderman was a long-time resident of Huntsville and was retired after 32 years with the Army Corps of Engineers, the last 10 of which were served as director of information management.
Survivors include his wife, Julie Linderman; two sons, Paul Randall Linderman Jr. of Knoxville and Timothy H. Linderman of Birmingham; one brother, G. Wayne Linderman of Birmingham; and one granddaughter.
Visitation will be today from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a rosary service at 7 at the funeral home.

GUNTERSVILLE - Dr. A.G. ''Jake Long Jr., 79, of 2030 Eagle Mountain Road died Friday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Tuesday at the Guntersville Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. Carr Funeral Home of Guntersville will announce the funeral time.
Burial will be in Crestview Cemetery.
Dr. Long was a retired optometrist, a veteran of World War II and a Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Long; two sons, Dr. J. Ramsey Long of Guntersville and Jerry Long of Huntsville; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Thomas D. Miller
ATHENS - Thomas David ''Dave Miller, 69, died Saturday at his home. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with Pat Lawrence and Randy Davis officiating.
Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery.
Mr. Miller was a native of Limestone County, attended Berea Baptist Church and was retired from Woodmen of the World after 25 years.
Survivors include his special companion, Susie Elmore; one daughter, Peggy Miller Russell of Athens; one son, Larry Miller of Athens; one sister, Gladys M. Sandlin of Athens; one brother, Leon Miller of Decatur; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

TONEY - Glen Ray Smith Sr., 57, died Friday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Sammy Brister officiating.
Burial will be in Fords Chapel Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Becky T. Smith of Toney; two sons, Glen Ray Smith Jr. of Harvest and Tracy Scott Smith of Toney; three sisters, Shelby Jean McDonald of Hazel Green, Martina Self of Huntsville and Betty Jo Thompson of Toney; three brothers, Lynn Smith of Harvest, Mickey Smith of Toney and Ricky Smith of Athens; and one granddaughter.

FLAT ROCK - Nell Hawes Smith, 82, died Friday at a Birmingham hospital. The funeral will be today at 3:30 p.m. at Rudder Funeral Home in Stevenson with the Rev. Charles Smith officiating.
Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Smith Sr.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Thomas of Flat Rock; one son, George Smith Jr. of East Ridge, Tenn.; one brother, Jerry Hawes of Flat Rock; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Aubrey F. Thomas
HARVEST - Aubrey F. Thomas, 76, died Wednesday at his home. The memorial service will be today at 1 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home chapel.
Mr. Thomas was a native of Colbert County, but had lived in Madison County since 1964. He was retired from the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include one son, Bob Thomas of Glendale, Ariz.; one daughter, Susan Thomas of Houston; his mother, Mary Ellen Meadows Stein of Huntsville; two brothers, Hubert Thomas of Harvest and Frank Thomas of Orlando, Fla.; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Moddie G. Toney
Moddie Gladys Toney, 78, of 213 Jones St. died Wednesday at her home. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at St. Elizabeth C.P. Church with the Rev. Hosea Garrett officiating.
Burial will be in Faith Memorial Park with Royal Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Toney Sr. and the Rev. Roosevelt Toney, both of Huntsville; one sister, Jennie Keith of Triana; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Hans C. Wesch
Hans Charles Wesch, 76, died Thursday at a local hospital. A private funeral will be in Mobile with Spry Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements.
Mr. Wesch was a native of Seattle but had lived in Huntsville 35 years. He was a University of Washington honors graduate.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Wesch of Huntsville; one daughter, Sharon Miller of Seattle; one son, Paul Wesch of Mobile; one sister, Caroline Brown of Seattle; and five grandchildren.

Helen W. White
IDER - Helen W. Krebs White, 81, died Friday at her home. The funeral will be Sunday at 5 p.m. at Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar with wtih the Rev. Jeff Adkins officiating. A memorial service will also be Thursday at the Bryzinski Funeral Home in Baltimore, Md.
Burial will be in Gardens of Faith Cemetery in Baltimore.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Miller of Millington, Md., and Karen June Smith of Essex, Md.; one son, Edward Gary Krebs of Hudson, Fla.; one sister, Martha Holm of Tampa, Fla.; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Kerby Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to Valley Head Methodist Church in Valley Head.

Tressie N. Wilborn
GROVE OAK - Tressie Nell Wilborn, 71, died Friday at a Marshall County hospital. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at W.T. Wilson Funeral Home chapel.
Burial will be in Piney Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilborn was preceded in death by her husband, W.G. Wilborn.
Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Light of Grove Oak and Ann Frost of Crossville; two brothers, Thelbert Martin of Anniston and Eugene Campbell Martin of Huntington, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
