Alvin DeGraffenreid 'Graf' Hart
88, former judge, coach

CULLMAN -- A memorial service for Alvin DeGraffenreid "Graf" Hart, 88, of Cullman was March 19 at Moss Service Funeral Home.

Mr. Hart died Friday, March 17, 2000, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Jan. 2, 1912, in Fairview to Oscar and Lydia "Littie" Turkett Hart. He moved to Cullman in the early 1940s when he was elected Cullman County tax assessor. He served one term as Cullman County probate judge. For years, he served in the Admissions Department of St. Bernard College and also was interim athletic director and golf coach. The college gave him the degree of doctor of humane letters in 1974. He was National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Coach of the Year for District 27 in 1977 and 1979.

After the college closed, he joined the staff of Wallace State Community College as golf coach, where he helped to build a nationally recognized program. He was National Junior College Athletic Association Region 22 Coach of the Year in 1985-86. He also was co-owner and assistant administrator of Hanceville Nursing Home for 25 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Houlditch Strickland Hart; two daughters, Peggye Hart Knight of Cullman and Linda Beth Hart of Atlanta; one stepson, John David Strickland of Cullman; one grandson; and two great-granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Cullman, First Baptist Church of Fairview or St. Bernard Preparatory School of Cullman.

Mary Doss Nuby
85, retired salesperson

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Mary Doss Nuby, 85, of Hartselle will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Redfearn and the Rev. Bob Gordon officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Nuby died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at her home. She was born Jan. 22, 1915, in Morgan County to Clinton M. and Mary Elizabeth Doss. She was a member of West Hartselle Baptist Church and a retired salesperson from Barton's Clothing Store in Gadsden.

She is survived by one brother, Rev. Branson Isley of Hartselle; and one sister, Flora Isley Aycock of Hartselle.

Pallbearers will be Greg Garner, Rethal Hightower, Solomon Johnson, Anthony Light, Garland Roper and Dewayne Roper.

J.O. Braswell
74, retired educator and farmer

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for J.O. Braswell, 74, of Hartselle will be Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. W.G. Henry officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home and requests any donations be made to a favorite charity.

Mr. Braswell died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Falkville Health Care Center. He was born April 22, 1925, in Morgan County to Bascom Estee Braswell and Martha Ann Means Braswell. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hartselle and was a retired educator and farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Gurnialene Glasgow Braswell; one daughter, Beth Braswell Pabich of Fairfax, Va.; and one brother, Gorman Braswell of Decatur.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Blackwell, Danny Braswell, Michael Carter, Joe McDaniel, Don McLemore and Jimmy Ratcliff.

Bud Collins
75, owner Bud Collins Logging

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Bud Collins, 75, of Eva will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. James Wray officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday night from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Collins died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Morgan County to Dave Wenzel Collins and Audie Jewel Woodall Collins. He was owner and operator of Bud Collins Logging.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Collins; three sons, Bobby W. Collins Sr. and Timothy South, both of Eva, and Douglas Keel of Hartselle; three daughters, Phyllis Keel of Hartselle, and Susan South and Peggy Collins, both of Eva; three brothers, Samuel Collins of Litchfield, Ohio, Charles Collins of Milwaukee and Billy Joe Collins of Somerville; three sisters, Catherine Bryant of Somerville, Lucile Sims of Hartselle and Maggie Bahr of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Larry Bryant, Scott Collins, Steve Collins, Jessie Dunn, Ricky Partain, Danny Sims and R.W. Vaughn.

Shirley Crow Parham
61, church volunteer

Funeral for Shirley Crow Parham, 61, of Huntsville will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Etheridge officiating.

Burial will be in Bald Knob Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Ms. Parham died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at her home. She was born April 16, 1938, to Freemon Alton Crow and Bertha Phillips Crow in Morgan County. She often performed volunteer work at Grace Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Susan Mason of Somerville, Judy Brothers of Huntsville and Betty Knox of Columbia, Tenn.; one brother, Ray Crow of Decatur; two sisters, Ann Riner and Barbara Bruns, both of Decatur; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Michael Stewart, Steven Smart, Jamie Smart, Jeff Stewart, Tim Wilks and Greg Barber.

Darby E. Smith
64, retired GM employee

Funeral for Darby E. Smith, 64, of Moulton will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery in Neel. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was a retired General Motors employee.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Smith; one daughter, Donna Ihrke of Hartselle; two brothers, Wilmer Smith Jr. of Moulton and Larry Smith of Trinity; and two sisters, Willie Shelton of Danville and Shirley Jenkins of Hartselle.

Mrs. Smith died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born Dec. 20, 1959, in Hartselle and was a retired clerk for Vulcan Materials. She was the daughter of the late Cleo McNutt Blankenship.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Wayne Smith; two sons, Timmy Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., and John Smith of Hartselle; one daughter, Rhonda Kennedy of Falkville; her father, Curtis Blankenship of Falkville; three brothers, Sammy Blankenship and Jack Blankenship, both of Falkville, and Mike Blankenship of Battleground; two sisters, Mary Margarette Kennedy of Biloxi, Miss., and Ruth Ann Black of Hanceville; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Black, Sammy Blankenship, Tony Blankenship, Anthony Bunch, Joe Harris, Billy Kennedy and Mike Blankenship.

Burial will be in Gum Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Ward died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Summerford Nursing Home.

He was born March 23, 1916, in Morgan County to Jim and Birtie Blevins Ward.

He was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a retired orderly at Hartselle Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Sanders Ward.

Pallbearers will be Chris Wallace, Gary Lemmond, George Stephenson, Albert Thompson, Greg Sharp and Gary Schutt.

Albert 'Buddy' Bentley
72, retired Flavorich Dairy branch manager

Funeral for Albert "Buddy" Bentley, 72, of Decatur will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Grant officiating.

Burial will be in Burningtree Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Bentley died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Baptist Medical Center Montclair Hospital in Birmingham. He was born June 24, 1927, to William Ben Bentley and Elma Vinzant Bentley. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a retired branch manager for Flavorich Dairy, a handicap bus driver for Decatur City Schools and a member of Faith Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Freda Roberson Bentley; one son, Ricky Bentley of Huntsville; two daughters, Anita Gibson of Somerville and Donna Schrimsher of Decatur; two sisters, Nadine Dunaway and Gladys Drake, both of Decatur; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Hershel Sanders, Jackie Bentley, Jimmy Bentley, Jerry Waddell, Bill Woodall, Herman Marks Sr., Frank Little and Johnny South.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

J.C. Hice

TRINITY -- Funeral for J.C. Hice, 74, of Moulton will be today at 2 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home with Wendell Bennett officiating.

Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Hice died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee, Tenn. He was born Oct. 5, 1925, in Moulton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a highway maintenance worker. He was the brother of the late Callie Hice.

He is survived by his sister, Lillie Bell Hice of Tennessee.

Pallbearers will be Winford Stewart, Dale Garrison, Rufus Pearson, Dale Cooper, Brian Cooper and James Rice.

Myrtle J. Hodgens
93, homemaker

HARTSELLE -- Graveside service for Myrtle J. Hodgens, 93, of Hartselle will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Grant Freehome Cemetery with the Rev. John Elliott officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Hodgens died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born May 11, 1906, in Marshall County to Joseph Lane Burroughs and Bertha Lou Sutton Burroughs. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She is survived by one daughter, Marie Harmon of Hartselle; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

William Daniel 'Billy' Hurst
90, retired restaurant owner

TRINITY -- Funeral for William Daniel "Billy" Hurst, 90, of Moulton will be Monday at noon at Parkway Funeral Home with Gary Carter Sr. and Wallace Whitehorn officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 2 to 5 at the funeral home.

Mr. Hurst died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center. He was born March 3, 1910, in Moulton to Benjamin Franklin Hurst and Mattie Fannie Byars Hurst. He was a member of Hillsboro Heights Church of Christ and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a baker with the rank of petty officer second class. He was co-owner of Rainbow Drive-In and Restaurant in Moulton and retired from Freihofer Baking Co.

He is survived by two sons, Will Hurst and Tom Hurst, both of Moulton; one daughter, Grace Hurst, of Oregon; two sisters, Mildred Moody of Moulton and Marjorie Armstrong of McDonough, Ga.; and one granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Will Hurst, Tom Hurst, Alpha Byars, Ronnie Corum, Darrell Thompson and Glovis Hale.
